Résumé :
As metal boring bars have low dynamic stiffness, chatter is easily induced during the boring process. Therefore, improvement of the chatter stability is an open problem that requires further study. Though researchers proved that the composite materials suitable for making tapered boring bars can further improve the dynamic stiffness to meet the need of high-speed boring, existing research studies did not study the dynamic characteristics of the tapered composite boring bar comprehensively. In particular, no research has been done about the natural frequency and chatter stability of the composite boring bar under various taper ratios. Therefore, in this paper, a model of a tapered composite boring bar is established based on the Adomian modified decomposition method (AMDM). Second, this paper verifies the effectiveness of the AMDM by using the ANSYS software. Moreover, this paper studies the natural frequency of the boring bar model under various situations. Third, we verify the convergence of chatter stability of the boring bar model. Finally, the chatter stability of the tapered composite boring bar is analyzed comprehensively. The results show that the natural frequency and the chatter stability of the tapered model can be improved by choosing appropriate taper ratio, ply angle, stacking sequences, L/D ratio, T/D ratio, and the carbon composite. The results are helpful for the design of high-quality tapered composite boring bars matching the need of high speed cutting. In particular, these results can provide guidelines for adjusting the cutting speed in CNC boring and can further improve the surface finish of the machined workpieces.

Résumé :
This work presents the design and implementation of Rotman lens as a beam steering device for Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) applications. 2.45 GHz is considered as a center frequency design with (2-6) GHz frequency bandwidth. The beam steering is examined to cover ±21o scan angle with maximum main lobe magnitude 10.1 dBi, rectangular patch antennas are used as radiation elements to beam the output far field. The work is extended to compare between the tapered line which is used for matching between 50-Ω ports and lens cavity. CST microwave simulation studio results show that the rectangular taper line can yield 2 dB return loss less than linear taper line with a little bit shifting in responses for same input and load impedance.

Résumé :
In this work, a single port exponential tapered toothed log periodic antenna based on graphene artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is suggested for ultra-wideband (1–10) THz operation. The resonance frequency of the proposed antenna can be tuned by changing the connected DC voltage which leads to variation in the chemical potential of the graphene. The radiating toothed log periodic antenna consists of gold patch placed on 25x25 graphene patches which act as an AMC surface unit. Exponential taper is used to satisfy impedance matching between the antenna and the feeder over the frequency range. The simulation results reveal that 90% of frequency range satisfies when the chemical potential is1eV.

Résumé :
Owing to its centrosymmetric structure, the critical optical component of a silica fiber cannot to possess a second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, Χ(²), preventing a silica fiber from many potential applications. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a new technique to generate large and thermodynamically stable second-order nonlinearity into silica optical tapered fibers without breaking the centrosymmetry of the silica glass. The nonlinearity is introduced by surface layers with high polar-ordering fabricated by a novel hybrid covalent/ionic self-assembly multilayer technique. Despite the overall rotational symmetry of the nonlinear fiber, we observe significant second harmonic generation with ~ 400–500 fold enhancement of the SHG power compared to the traditional tapers. Phase matching for a SHG process in second-order nonlinear tapered fibers is also realized by the compensation of waveguide modal dispersion with material chromatic dispersion, which occurs only for submicron tapers where the modal dispersion is large. In addition, quasi-phase-matching for a nonlinear taper can be accomplished by introducing a periodic pattern into the nonlinear film coating. We use UV laser ablation for the controlled removal of particular nonlinear film segments on a taper surface in order to produce a Χ(²) grating structure. A resulting SHG enhancement from quasi-phase-matching is observed over a broadband spectrum of the pump light mainly due to the non-uniform shape of a taper waveguide. The laser ablation is a clean and fast technique able to produce well-define patterns of polymer films on either flat or curved substrate geometry. With surface layers containing reactive functional groups e.g. primary amines, we demonstrate that the resulting patterned film obtained from the laser ablation can be used as a template for further self-assembly of nanoparticles with high selectivity. A pattern feature size down to ~ 2μm or smaller can be fabricated using this approach. We also discuss preliminary results on a novel technique to further improve spatial accuracy for selective self-assembly of nanoparticles at an unprecedented level. Different types of nanoparticles are joined in order to form well-defined, molecular-like superstructures with nanoscale accuracy and precision. The technique is based on a selective surface functionalization of photosensitive molecules coated on metallic nanoparticles utilizing enhanced two-photon photocleavage at the plasmonically-active sites (hot spots) of the nanoparticles in resonance with an applied electromagnetic wave. As a result, the surface functional groups at the nanoparticle hot spots are different from the the other areas, allowing other kinds of nanoparticles to self-assemble at the hot spots with high degree of selectivity.

« Modifying terahertz waveguide geometries : Bends, tapers, and grooves ». Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/70206.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Terahertz waveguides are the focus of considerable research interest due to their potential for sensing, imaging and communications applications. Two of the most promising designs are the metal wire waveguide and the parallel-plate waveguide. The metal wire waveguide exhibits excellent low loss and low dispersion characteristics. However, the radiation is only weakly coupled to the wire and the beam extends a great distance from the waveguide, which can lead to high bending loss. In my research I show that this large beam extent also gives a high degree of flexibility in the geometry required to couple radiation into the waveguide or between waveguide sections. I also show that the traditional formalism of bending loss is incomplete, and that there is an optimum radius of curvature to reduce loss. The relationship between the beam extent and the radius of the wire presents the possibility of a tapered waveguide to confine the radiation as it propagates. I here present experimental data and simulations results to verify this subwavelength confinement at the tip of a tapered metal wire waveguide, which is of great interest for near-field imaging applications. The parallel-plate waveguide is another design frequently employed due to its low loss and low dispersion characteristics. Resonant structures may also be easily incorporated into the waveguide for sensing and filtering applications. One such structure is a single rectangular groove, which serves as a notch filter with a very narrow linewidth when the transverse-electric (TE) mode of the waveguide is excited, though its physical origin is poorly understood. In this work I present a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the rectangular resonant cavity in a TE-mode parallel-plate waveguide, particularly with respect to its potential as a microfluidic refractive index sensor. This study is extended to include the possibility of two grooves, in both coupled and non-coupled geometries, and their efficacy as multichannel or high-resolution single-channel microfluidic sensors.

Résumé :
Banks in emerging market economies rely on cross-border interbank lending to financing firms in the real sector. By matching cross-border bank-to-bank loan level data with domestic bank-to-firm loan level data, and firm-level data, this paper shows that sudden yield reversal observed during the 2013 Fed taper tantrum resulted in a substantial contraction of cross-border interbank lending in emerging markets that significantly reduced the supply of domestic corporate credit and increased the corporate loan rates. Results show that firms with an ex-ante high concentration of credit granted by exposed banks in the cross-border interbank market exhibited low bank credit and substantial real effects, including a decline in imports and exports. The results further indicate that cross-border intra-group lending and domestic unsecured interbank funding contribute to smoothing the effects of sudden yield reversals on the financial intermediation. Overall, the results are consistent with the notion that banks’ exposition in international credit markets contributes to global financial conditions’ transmission to the economy.
