Résumé :
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of experimental factors on the volumetric properties and performance of warm mix asphalt (WMA) with RH-WMA using the Taguchi method. The gradations of the mixtures were based on AC 14, as specified by the Public Works Department of Malaysia. An L16 orthogonal array was employed to design the mixtures, considering three factors: compaction temperatures ranging from 95 to 140°C, RH-WMA contents ranging from 1% to 4%, and asphalt contents ranging from 3.5% to 6.5%. Sixteen mixtures were prepared according to the L16 array. The study focused on investigating several volumetric properties, including bulk-specific gravity, air voids, voids filled with asphalt, and voids in mineral aggregates. Additionally, the strength behavior of the samples was analyzed using the Taguchi method. The resilient modulus and performance of the mixtures were also evaluated. The results of the study indicate that a high RH-WMA content led to a slight decrease in the strength of the asphalt mixture and air voids. However, it increased the voids filled with asphalt (VFA) and resulted in softening of the asphalt mixtures.

Résumé :
Abstract Objective The insecticidal activity of Bacillus thuringiensis directly depends on the yield of delta-endotoxins. In this study, various nutritional and cultural parameters influencing delta-endotoxin synthesis by a local isolate of B. thuringiensis Se13 were investigated using Taguchi methods. Methods In the first experiment, four factors, incubation period, incubation temperature, initial pH and medium, each at four levels, were selected and an orthogonal array layout of L16 was carried out. In the second experiment, Taguchi’s orthogonal array method of L27 was used to evaluate the effects of the different concentration of medium components. Taguchi’s signal–noise ratio and variance analysis were applied to determine the effect of the factors. After each experiment, verification studies were carried out using determined optimum conditions. Results The optimum conditions for incubation period, incubation temperature, initial pH, and medium determined as 72 h, 30°C, pH 9, and M4 medium, respectively. In the second experiment, soybean flour (5%), glucose (5%), KH2PO4 (0.3%), K2HPO4 (0.1%), MgSO4 (0.4%) were determined as the optimum conditions. The delta-endotoxin yield was elevated to 1559.25 μg mL−1 when the factors were adjusted to optimum level. Conclusion Optimization using the Taguchi method appeared to be a good choice for the overproduction of delta-endotoxin.

Résumé :
This study focuses on the geopolymer synthesized from Mount Sinabung’s volcanic ash. The compressive strength of the geopolymer was determined by optimizing five factors using the Taguchi method’s L16 array. The five factors included: volcanic ash wt.%, Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) wt.%, Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration (mole), Na2SiO3/NaOH wt.% and water/binder (w/b) wt.%. A total of 16 mixtures were prepared per the L16 array and evaluated on five levels to obtain the optimum mixture. The main findings of this study revealed that A2B1C2D3E4 produced the highest compressive strength of 79.625 MPa after three days of curing time, while A4B2C3D1E4 produced the lowest compressive strength of 41.93 MPa. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio analysis from the Taguchi method shows that the factor of Na2SiO3 has a greater impact on compressive strength. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) result for the geopolymer mortar revealed the formation of aluminosilicate type (N-A-S-H) and calcium silicate (C-S-H) gels, whereas the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) result exhibited numerous pores and a denser structure. These characterization results demonstrated that the polymerization of volcanic ash mortar from Sinabung successfully conserves natural resources. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-2022-08-11-016 Full Text: PDF

Résumé :
Laser welding is widely used for its advantages like deeper weld penetration, narrow heat affected zone, higher welding speeds and better weld quality with less damage to the workpiece compared to arc welding processes. The purpose of this paper is to determine the influence of major laser welding process parameters of beam pulse energy, travel speed and focal position on weld fusion zone geometry in stainless steel and optimizing these parameters to obtain maximum penetration and minimum weld width simultaneously. The experiments were planned according to Taguchi’s L16 orthogonal array. The grey-based Taguchi method was then employed to convert the multiple quality criteria into one single relational grade. Based on the calculated relational grade, Taguchi tools such as analysis of variance and signal-to-noise ratio were used to analyze and obtain the significant parameters and evaluate the optimum combination levels of the mentioned process parameters. Moreover, the effect of optimization procedure was studied on the microstructure and micro-hardness of the weldments. It was concluded that this optimization method can lead to elimination of chain ferrite precipitation and more uniform micro-hardness across the weld bead. The confirmation experiments verified that this method can effectively improve multiple performance characteristics and the results are reproducible in laser welding.

Résumé :
In this study, the Taguchi experimental design method using an L16 orthogonal array was attempted in order to investigate the optimal operating conditions for the CO2 methanation process in Ni-based catalysts. The relative influence of the main factors affecting CO2 conversion and CH4 yield was ranked as follows: reactor pressure > space velocity > reaction temperature. The optimal combination of operating conditions was a reactor temperature of 315 °C, a pressure of 19 bar, and a space velocity of 6000 h−1. The effect of the H2/CO2 ratio on CO2 conversion and CH4 yield was further considered under these optimal operating conditions. Moreover, the catalyst was characterized in order to investigate the production of coke through Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The amount of coke produced after the reaction for approximately 24 h was ~2 wt.%. Therefore, the desired CH4 yield and long-term operational stability were successfully obtained using the Taguchi design method and catalyst characterization.

Résumé :
The current work aimed to enhance the delignification of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) for bioethanol production. The optimization of alkali (sodium hydroxide) pretreatment parameters such as concentration and residence time was carried out by the Taguchi method using L16 orthogonal array with two factors and four levels. Sugarcane bagasse powder was mixed with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution (0.5-2 wt.%) and heated in an autoclave at 121°C and at varied times (30-120 min). From the statistical analysis of data, it was observed that delignification and glucan increased with the increased concentration and short time. The optimum parameters of NaOH pretreatment were 2 wt.% of NaOH concentration and 30 minutes of residence time. At the optimum conditions, 86.8% delignification and 46.6% glucan content of SCB were obtained. Thus, alkali pretreatment optimized by Taguchi design is the effective method to remove lignin and to increase cellulose or glucan content in sugarcane bagasse for facilitating the further catalytic hydrolysis in bioethanol production.

Résumé :
Abstract The critical dimensions of magnet and its positional parameters in a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are optimized using Taguchi method. L16 Orthogonal Array (OA) was used in Taguchi method to optimize the magnet width w and thickness t, and magnet position parameters i.e., D1, O1, and Rib. Using the D-optimal design criterion, 52 data points for five factors were selected for optimization of power factor and efficiency using response surface methodology to perform the sensitivity analysis. Regression model for efficiency and power factor are modeled using analysis of variance results. A 1.07 kW capacity PMSM was designed based on the optimized parameters and making use of efficient computational resource, i.e., RMxprt tool of the ANSYS Maxwell software and drive system in ANSYS Simplorer for real time results and performance study. The performance of PMSM in terms of line current, load torque, and efficiency has been verified with the experimental results and the efficiency data available in literature. The results were found to be in a good agreement. Confirmation test results showed that the Taguchi method is very successful in the optimization of permanent magnet synchronous motor dimensions.

Résumé :
Magnetorheological (MR) strut is among the leading advanced applications of semi-active suspension systems. The damping force of MR damper is controlled by varying the viscosity of MR fluid. In this work, the viscosity of MR damper varies by changing the current from 0.5A to 0.7A. The design of experiments is taken into account in concert with the product/process development as one completely advanced tool. The parameters used for ride comfort optimization are sprung mass, spring stiffness, tire pressure, current, and cylinder material with two levels of each. Taguchi orthogonal array method is used to select the best results by parameter optimization with a minimum number of test runs. In this paper, from Taguchi L16 array and S/N ratio analysis, it is observed that the cylinder material with Al and CS for damper cylinder is a key parameter for performance measure of semi-active suspension system. From regression analysis, a linear mathematical model is developed for Al and CS as cylinder materials. The interaction of cylinder materials with all four parameters is plotted. The methodology implemented for measurement of acceleration as a ride comfort is as per IS 2631-1997. The more economical model of magnetorheological damper will motivate Indian auto industry to broader applications.

The crater diameter and depth of the surface machined by electrical discharge machining (EDM) were used to evaluate indexes for EDMed surface. The influence of discharge parameters selected on the crater diameter and depth in mirror-like surface EDM process was investigated, and the optimization scheme was obtained. An L16 (44×23) Taguchi standard orthogonal array was chosen for the design of experiments. Experimental results indicate that peak current and open discharge voltage have more influence on the crater diameter and depth in comparison with pulse off-time and pulse duration. Also the results confirm that the crater depth is about 10 to 20 percent of its diameter while the near-mirror EDM conducted in the NAK80 steel with fine discharge parameters.

Résumé :
In the present work, an experimental investigation has been conducted to optimize the cutting parameters during turning of AA6061-T6 on Lathe in dry conditions. CVD made coated carbide inserts (WEDIA CNMG 120404, CNMG 120408) are used as cutting tools. Cutting speed (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 RPM), feed (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 mm/rev), depth of cut (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 mm) and Nose radius (0.4, 0.8 mm) were considered as fixed parameters. A mixed level orthogonal array (L16) from taguchi has been adopted for the experiments. The multiple performances of Material Removal rate (MRR) and Roughness characteristics (Ra and Rz) were optimized by a hybrid Entropy-TOPSIS approach. The results revealed that the nose radius has the most predominant effect on the multiple responses.

Résumé :
Using the Taguchi Grey response surface approach, this study investigates the effect of novel ultrasonic-aided stir casting conditions on the production of AA6061/zirconia nanocomposites. A Taguchi L16 orthogonal array was utilized to conduct the researches, which included ultrasonic power (1.75-2.5 kW), time (5-20 min), temperature (750-900°C), which can cause premature solidification, stir pressure (100-250 MPa), and reinforcement weight percentage (wt% of reinforcement). Ultrasonic-aided stir casting technique has five adjustable parameters (2-5). The ultimate tensile strength, elongation percentage, hardness, and size of the grain material were some of the metrics used to evaluate the process performance. It was decided to employ the response surface approach to model and optimize the numerous replies into one grey relational analysis. AA6061/zirconia nanocomposites were studied using statistical methods such as 3D surface plots and variance analysis. 2.2537 kW, 16.28 min ultrasonic duration, weight % of reinforcement of 1.9, stirring temperature of 700.73°C, and stirring pressure of 142.63 MPa were found to be the best parameter values.

Résumé :
The tribological properties of hybridized reinforced aluminium matrix composites were optimized using Taguchi and Grey Relational Analysis in conjunction with an L16 orthogonal array. The combination of palm kernel shell ash (PKSA) (0–5 wt. %) along with nano BN reinforcements was taken in interest. Loads and speeds (500, 750, 1000, and 1250 rpm) were employed as control parameters for the experiment. Using a Taber type abrasion machine, the wear samples were made, and the wear experiments were carried out. Speed and load were more important than the percentage of reinforcements in composites when it came to evaluating wear index and loss of volume. With respect to wear index and volume loss, Taguchi-relational Grey’s analysis identified A3B1C1 ( reinforcement = 5 wt. %; load = 500 g; speed = 500 rpm) as the optimal process parameter combination, with a reinforcement of 3 wt. %, load = 500 g, and speed = 500 rpm being the second-best option. Validation tests have revealed that the anticipated and experiment values at the optimal situations are both within the acceptable range. Performance is influenced more by speed than by load, which is influenced more by the weight percentage of composites, as demonstrated by the application of the Taguchi and Grey Relational Analysis methods.

High specific strength, strength-to-weight ratio, cheap cost, and other advantages, nanofillers are now the subject of most research on natural fibers. The current research’s main goal is to combine the Taguchi and artificial neural networks (ANN) approaches to maximize the mechanical characteristics of nanocomposites. The parameters: (i) nano-SiO2 wt%, (ii) banana fiber wt%, (iii) compression pressure in MPa, and (iv) compression molding temperature in °C were selected to achieve the objectives above. An L16 orthogonal array was used to optimize the process parameters based on the Taguchi technique. According to the intended experiment, mechanical characteristics, such as tension, bending, and impact strength, were assessed. The ANN was used to forecast outcomes that were optimized. The fiber mat thickness of banana fiber and the weight ratio of nano-SiO2 showed a considerable improvement in the mechanical characteristics of hybrid composites. According to the Taguchi technique, the most significant mechanical characteristics were 47.36 MPa tensile, 64.48 MPa flexural, and 35.33 kJ of impact under circumstances of 5% SiO2, 19 MPa pressure, and 110 °C. With 95% accuracy, ANN-predicted mechanical strength. The ANN forecast was more accurate than the regression model and experimental data. The above nanobased hybrid composites are mainly employed to satisfy the needs of the contemporary vehicle sector.

Structure of convolutional neural network (CNN) applied for image recognition requires large numbers of tuning for designated datasets in practice. It is a time-consuming process to finally come up with a feasible structure for specific requirement. This paper proposes a method based on Taguchi method which can efficiently determine the optimal structure of hyperparameters combination. Five hyperparameters with four levels are defined as control factors and two indicators are chosen to measure the performance of CNN structure. L16 (45) orthogonal array is used to arrange the experiment. S/N ratio and main effect plot are used to identify the optimal structure (hyperparameter combination) of CNN. The classic case of MNIST is employed to verify the practicability of the proposed method. In this study, springback behaviour of Dp600 (Dual Phase Steel) sheet material was investigated using air V bending technique. As bending parameters, four different punch tip radii and four different sheet thicknesses were used. The springback values obtained from the experiments were compared with each other. At the same time, the experimental data were analysed with Response Surface Method (RSM) and Taguchi (L16) orthogonal array. The experimental data and the simulation results were found to be consistent. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio is used to determine the most appropriate parameter of minimum springback behaviour. Additionally, it is possible to estimate the optimal combination of the bending parameters. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and the design of experiment (DOE) were utilised for the analysis of the experimental results. It was determined that the effect of these parameters on the air V bending process was based on springback behaviours.

Résumé :
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation carried out to optimize the weight of a glass manufacturing bottle of a product called CC35 by Taguchi method of parameter design. The experiments have been designed using an L16 orthogonal array with thirteen factors and two levels each. So the effects of each control factor level on the performance characteristic are analyzed using signal-to-noise ratios, mean response data and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Hence, an experimental setting is established; and to measure the performance of the Taguchi method on the manufacturing process before and after the experiment, three tools are used. The Xbar and range charts measure the stability of the process, the capability index estimates the process ability to deliver a good product in regard to the target value and customer specifications. The quality loss function (QLF) was used to determine the reduction in quality cost due to the elimination of deviation of the quality characteristic (weight) from the target value. Experiment shows that the Taguchi method applied on the glass bottle’s manufacturing process (CC35) ensures best stability and capability of the manufacturing process and reduces the weight which results in the quality cost down to 92%. Résumé :
In terms of machinability are titanium alloys classified in the group of difficult to cut materials. The main factors determining this status are limited tool life, high generated cutting forces (torque) and temperature in cutting zone caused by low thermal conductivity as well as chemical reactivity with cutting tool. Solid carbide drills still remain as preferred choice in hole making process when machining Ti6Al4V alloy. Besides cutting conditions, tool and cutting edge geometry significantly affect the value of torque. Reduction of process energy requirements can be achieved by appropriate optimization of these parameters. Mathematical model describing influence of cutting speed, feed rate, clearance angle and cutting edge radius on investigated variable with high reliability coefficient (R2=96.72%) was found. Drilling experiments were designed and carried out using Taguchi orthogonal array L16.

Résumé :
In this research, results of an experimental investigation on separation of oil from a real oily wastewater using an ultrafiltration (UF) polymeric membrane are presented. In order to enhance the performance of UF in API separator effluent treatment and to get more permeation flux (PF), effects of operating factors on the yield of PF were studied. Five factors at four levels were investigated: trans-membrane pressure (TMP), temperature (T), cross flow velocity (CFV), pH and salt concentration (SC). Taguchi method (L16 orthogonal array (OA)) was used. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to calculate sum of square, variance, error variance and contribution percentage of each factor on response. The optimal levels thus determined for the four influential factors were: TMP, 3 bar; T, 40˚C; CFV, 1.0 m/s; SC, 25 g/L and pH, 8. The results showed that CFV and SC are the most and the least effective factors on PF, respectively. Increasing CFV, TMP, T and pH caused the better performance of UF membrane process due to enhancement of driving force and fouling residence. Also, effects of oil concentration (OC) in the wastewater on PF and total organic carbon (TOC) rejection were investigated. Finally, the highest TOC rejection was found to be 85%.

Résumé :
In this study, Taguchi-Grey relational analysis was used to investigate and optimize wear parameters such as sliding speed, reinforcement of Gr and reinforcement of Al2O3, and their effect on dry sliding wear performance of ZA-27 nanocomposites. Nanocomposites were synthesized via hot pressing process with pre-processing mechanical milling. Sixteen experimental tests were performed based on design of experiments which was created with the help of Taguchi L16 orthogonal array. Grey relational analysis (GRA) was applied for determination of optimal combination of parameters in order to improve tribological characteristics. Optimal combination of factors, obtained with Taguchi Grey relational analysis was sliding speed of 100 rpm, reinforcement content of 1 vol.% Gr and reinforcement content of 4 vol.% Al2O3. Validation of results was done by using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Developed model had overall regression coefficient 0.99836, and output values showed good correlation with experimental results. Based on this research, it can be observed that nanocomposites with reinforcement of Gr and Al2O3 can be potentially employed in many industries as a good substitute for the base alloy. In addition, as a result of the analysis of the worn surfaces, it was determined that with the increase of the Al2O3 ratio, the hard Al2O3 nanoparticles turned the dominant wear mechanism into abrasive. Also, it was determined that the Gr nanoparticles appeared on the abrasive wear lines.

Résumé :
Cement is a construction material with a specific quality that must be meet standard requirements and customer requirements. Through a good and continuous quality control, it will produce cement with consistent quality as its Quality Planning. Cement quality is calculated after adding water by measuring its setting time, compressive strength developing, heat of hydration, expantion/shrinkage, and its durability to environment effect. In cement application, primary parameter to determine cement quality is its compressive strength. Some factors that affect compressive strength of cement are reactivity and amount of Tricalcium Silicate (C3S) of Clinker, Clinker freelime (free CaO), amount of SO3 in Cement, amount of additional materials (insoluble residue/IR and loss on ignition/LOI), and sieve on 45 µm residue of cement. This research is intended to find how insoluble residue/IR, loss on ignition/LOI, and amount of SO3 will affect compressive strength of cement. Various percentages of IR, LOI, and SO3 in cement will result different compressive strength. Taguchi Method is applied to determine material proportion. With Orthogonal Array calculation for 3 factors and 4 levels, it will result 16 calculation running times (L16 4**3). In laboratory scale, cement for this research has been being manufactured and then its compressive strength for 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days will be measured. Determination of optimal proportion will be calculated by statistic method for higher compressive strength and lower manufacturing cost.
In this study, external longitudinal turning operation was performed on (AISI 1020) steel to examine the influences of coating of the cutting tool on the machined surface roughness. The cutting tools used were coated and uncoated cemented carbide inserts. The tests are performed at four spindle speeds (80, 315, 500, and 800) rpm, at each of which two feed rates (0.2 and 0.5mm/rev) and two depth of cut (0.5 and 0.7mm) were used. Taguchi design of experiments (DOE) with a designed mathematical predictive model was used to investigate the effect of the coating layer and determine the machining conditions for minimum surface roughness. Accordingly, a suitable mixed orthogonal array L16 (3*4) was selected. The results showed that the surface roughness produced by using TiC coated inserts for identical machining conditions was lower than that produced due to uncoated tool by 41% to 53%. Regression analysis showed that the non-linear quadratic polynomial equation appears to be more suitable for representing the relation of spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut with the surface roughness. Taguchi method and the designed mathematical model had been used to predict the optimal cutting conditions. A confirmation test for the obtained results verified that the designed Taguchi experiments and the designed model successfully investigated the effect of the coating on the surface roughness. Data fit ver.9 and Mtb14 software had been employed to achieve the object of the presented work.

Résumé :
This study analyzes the influence of ethanol as gasoline blend on a spark ignition engine and a mathematical tool is proposed based on multi attribute decision making approach to select optimal combination of operating parameters of a variable compression ratio multi fuel engine considering objective, subjective and integrated weights of attributes. Test fuels used were ethanol-gasoline blends having ethanol in proportions of 10, 20, 30 and 40 vol %. The compression ratio was varied as 6, 7, 8 and 9. The load was varied as 25, 50, 75 and 100%. A series of 16 experiments were conducted by adopting Taguchi based design of experiments resulting in L16 orthogonal array. The result of proposed method shows that the combination of compression ratio 6, ethanol-gasoline blend 30 vol% at a load of 75% is found to the best choice from among other trails and was validated using graph theory matrix approach

Résumé :
In this paper, determination of optimum EDM input variables like discharge current (DC), pulse on time (Pon), pulse off time (Poff), and gap voltage (GV) on responses like material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR) using Taguchi technique on the novel Al7010/2%B4C/2%BN hybrid metal matrix nanocomposite (HMMNC) manufactured through ultrasonic assisted stir casting (UASC) route. The various experiments were planned and carried out L16 orthogonal array and regression equations were established by using Analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine the impact of pulse factors. The outcomes exposed that discharge current greatest effect factor on MRR and SR was found with % contribution of 82.07% and 86.86%. It is also identified that the optimum level conditions of pulse factors for MRR and SR is A4B4C1D1 and A1B1C4D4. The outcomes were further determined by utilizing confirmatory experiment. The machined surface morphology was observed through Scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Résumé :
Due to the high mechanical strength of the metals used in implant manufacture, which makes them difficult to work with using other machining techniques, EDM is frequently employed in the production of implants. In this study, the effect of powder ratio and other EDM parameters used in the machining of CrCoMo alloy, which used in implant production widely, with powder added EDM on the surface roughness of the machined part was investigated through the response surface methodology. AISI 316L stainless steel was chosen as the electrode material, and Ti6V4Al was chosen as the additive powder, taking into account their biocompatibility properties. Using a Taguchi L16 array, an experimental design was created by selecting 4 levels for each parameter of additive ratio, discharge current, Ton, and Toff. The response surface method was used, along with the experimental data, to estimate how the parameters affected Ra and Rz.
