Résumé :
This dissertation is a study of strategy in thin industries, a class of industries whose members include the aircraft industry, jet engines, heavy electrical equipment, and diesel locomotives. These industries have a number of common features which inter-relate to produce a unique configuration. Foremost among the attributes that make up this configuration is the sparsity and magnitude of transactions on which the industry must subsist. The decrease in the number of transactions, and the increase in their size, results in a "thin" industry. The sparsity and size of transactions combine to produce complex, unstable, and highly interconnected environments. These environmental conditions motivate firms to develop external linkages with other organizations. The successful management of external linkages will frequently depend on knowledge and experience obtained in previous relationships. Many of the problems created by external linkages can only be resolved once they are formed. At the same time, the knowledge required to resolve these problems calls for previous experience.
The dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first three chapters we explore thin industries as a type and as an environment. In the remaining three chapters we look at the ramifications of interorganizational learning on the management of external linkages. In the concluding chapter we discuss the implications of thin industries to the study and practice of strategic management. Three issues in particular are singled out: the decline of organizational autonomy, the limits of competition, and new directions for theory building. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Borello, José Antonio. « From craft to flexibility : linkages and industrial governance systems in the development of a capital-goods industry in Mendoza, Argentina, 1895-1990 ». Diss., Virginia Tech, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37890.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines the development of a capital goods industry in Mendoza Argentina through an analysis of linkages and industrial governance systems. Linkages are material, informational, and financial flows among firms. Industrial governance systems are the social practices that cement linkages. Hence, linkages are understood as socially embedded and not as market transactions governed solely by price considerations. The study has two major arguments. First, it claims that contrary to conventional industrial location theory firms do not locate in view of the previous existence of certain favorable factors, but rather construct these factors as they grow. This argument is operationalized by asking how firms generate in time their own linkages. Examples taken from the 1895-1990 period include labor and subcontractors, clientele, services, and the emergence of economic groups. Second, this study argues that the capital-goods industry in Mendoza is undergoing a Substantial (and unprecedented) transition in the way production is organized. The transition is part of the larger shift taking place at both the national and global scales. The analysis focuses on the historical pattern of linkages and governance systems in the industry, and contrasts that pattern with that of the recent decade. Implicit in the previous two arguments are two territorial dimensions. First, the development of “industry produces regions" (Storper and Walker 1989). Second, at the intra-city level this means that the evolution of the industry (and specifically its linkage structure and governance systems) has a direct bearing on the direction and nature of the city’s growth. These two arguments are illustrated through empirical work in Mendoza, a city of close to a million people in western Argentina. Over 100 interviews gathered over ten months reveal the origins, evolution, and current form of linkages in the capital-goods industry. These interviews are complemented by data from a variety of sources. The main conclusions of the study are three. First, the study illustrates the richness and depth that emerges from a project based on substantial fieldwork. Second, it shows the advantages of conceiving industrialization not as the location of plants in response to favorable conditions, but as a process initiated by the firms themselves. Third, the dissertation shows that the capital-goods industry of Mendoza iS in a transitional phase towards new ways of organizing production. The transition is expressed in new linkage structures, new governance systems, and the emergence of new types of firms and institutional arrangements.

The essay "Changes in the engineer coy between NBG-08 to NBG-11 -  A myth or truth?" deals with the engineer company under Nordic Battlegroup-08 and Nordic Battlegroup-11. The essay depicts the differences that existed between the respective companies regarding organization, material and equipment, as well as requirements and tasks, and has been conducted through a comparison between the respective companies. The purpose of the essay is to see which effect earlier organizations has on the preparation of a new organization under the respective Nordic Battlegroup. In this case, the engineer company under the respective Nordic Battlegroup. A comparison between the two different companies, containing three of the basic skills: effect, movement and endurance, has been conducted linked to two of the warfare skills, conceptual and physical skills. The result of the study shows conclusions connected to mainly lack of communication between the respective engineer companies, where no, or very limited, experience exchanges have been made between them. This resulted in that the development of the engineer company can be summarized as the construction of a completely new organization rather than a reorganization, where experience and lessons learned could have helped building the "new" organization.

Résumé :
Administration of armies has been sadly neglected in historical studies but the ability of the AIF to develop an efficient system of administration and to fit into the equally efficient British system, had much to do with the success of the AIF, especially late in the war. The various Empire governments had made some preparations for an alliance system of fighting in the event of a major war, but in practice these needed a great deal of adjustment. This thesis examines the manner in which the dominions and Britain planned for a possible war and the way in which changes had to be made in practice. It examines the manner in which the AIF developed a system and the many facets of this system, which had developed a remarkable degree of efficiency by the end of the war. Because the AIF and CEF were so alike in size, composition and in the problem they faced, a recurring theme of the thesis is a comparison between the two. It embraces the following: a. Prewar preparation for a combined empire army. b. The organisation of the administrative system of the AIF and the manner this improved through the war. c. The organisation and problems of the CEF administrative system d. The development of a system of capitation to pay for the services supplied to the AIF and CEF. e. Supply of equipment. f. Manner in which both forces worked to maintain their forces. g. The manner in which both forces catered for the needs of the individual soldiers. h. Supply in the field i. Medical administration in the AIF j. The administration in the AIF k. The administration of discipline in the AIF l. The demobilisation of the AIF.

The present study aimed at the contribution to INCA on the formulation of the policy on the control of uterine cervical neoplasms in Brazil. It focused on the analysis of the existing interfaces among clinic, health industrial and economic complex (CEIS) and health services organization and administration at SUS by using the preclinical phase of uterine cervical neoplasms with emphasis on the treatment and precursor lesions followup. The justifications were the epidemiological, economical, social and political magnitude of uterine cervical neoplasms in Brazil; the strategic role of INCA in the formulation of cancer national policy and the insertion of control actions of uterine cervical neoplasms in CEIS.The study consisted of an exploratory research with descriptive content, which priviledged the collection techiniques and quantitative analysis of secondary data. The material and the method used in the research involved data of information systems of public dominion available on the internet. The results were that the aspects and critical resources involved in this preclinical phase are related to the access dificulty to tracking of the illness, to the fragmented specialized attention of medium complexity – which interfers on the care cycle that involves the treatment and precursor lesions follow-up – and finally to the sort of SUS financial support to the specialized attention that does not embraces a care cycle. The number of municipalities with a production registration at SUS (colposcopy, uterine cervical biopsy and CAF) showed a slight evolution between years 2000 and 2007 with predominance of municipal public supplier in colposcopy and biopsy. In relation to CAF it was observed a migration to the private supplier. Although the procedures occur in the same municipality it does not mean that they occur at the same unit. This fact causes a fragmentation of the actions related to the care cycle. By maping the industries, it was observed that their majority is Brazilian and the equipment they produce is connected to a group of accessories to allow their operation. This characterizes an interdependent sectorial relation that brings terrible consequences for SUS. Finally, in Brazil, the technological development applied to health industries became distant of practical clinic, presenting a model based on the illness follow-up services in which resources are mobilized to treat its consequences – this fact does not mean a better population health. Besides, the treatment and precursor lesions follow-up are deeply related to the dimensions involving health and development.

Pelletier, Christine.

abstract: This dissertation examines an analytical methodology that considers predictive maintenance on industrial facilities equipment to exceed world class availability standards with greater understanding for organizational participation impacts. The research for this study was performed at one of the world's largest semiconductor facilities, with the intent of understanding one possible cause for a noticeable behavior in technical work routines. Semiconductor manufacturing disruption poses significant potential revenue loss on a scale easily quantified in millions of dollars per hour. These instances are commonly referred to as "Interruption to production" (ITP). ITP is a standardized metric used across Company ABC's worldwide factory network to track frequency of occurrence and duration of manufacturing downtime. ITP, the key quantifiable indicator in this dissertation, will be the primary analytical measurement to identify the effectiveness of maintenance personnel's work routines as they relate to unscheduled downtime with facilities systems. This dissertation examines the process used to obtain change in an industrial facilities organization and the associated reactions of individual organizational members. To give the reader background orientation on the methodology for testing, measuring and ultimately assessing the benefits and risks associated with integrating a predictive equipment failure methodology, this dissertation will examine analytical findings associated with the statement of purpose as it pertains to ITP reduction. However, the focus will be the exploration of behavioral findings within the organization and the development of an improved industry standard for predictive ITP reduction process implementation. Specifically, findings associated with organizational participation and learning development trends found within the work group.

By the hyper-competition era coming, the global market structure keeps changing and the upgrade of communication equipment products are getting more often in the same time. However, there is no long-term management advantage to operate the business. Therefore, enterprises must break out from current situation to secure the temporary advantage. They shall continue to create or innovate, and destroy or improve the weak condition and rebuild the short-term advantage. Also, they must improve their entire organization quality and efficiency by utilizing the information technology effectively to build up an information technology platform in order to meet the requirements of the environmental changes. Thus, they can continuously promote the innovative and competitive products and services which will secure the advantage competition to sustain the business operation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts from case company organization change and the tangible benefits through introducing product lifecycle management (PLM)system. Based on the literatures, product lifecycle management systems and organizational changes offered by Leavitt (1964) are proposed as the core framework. The impacts and effectiveness of the case company with PLM system are analyzed with four important factors including organizational change task, staff, technology and structure. The investigation of different working levels’ thinking about the impacts of implementing PLM system to lead to organization change is just corresponding with the tangible, intangible benefits and to the organization changes of introducing PLM system. Through this study, the impacts and benefits of applying a new system can be the reference for enterprises to plan to introduce PLM system in the future.

This thesis describes the researcher’s journey as an online facilitator and reflective organization development (OD) practitioner as she explores how to nurture and cultivate space for learning and collaboration in an online community of practice. The research setting is a small group of mostly volunteers in a national health charity. The researcher adopts a reflective practitioner research approach engaging in a continuous process of story-telling throughout the thesis. She struggles with questions such as her own dynamic role as an outside facilitator, the role of technology, dilemmas of emergence versus design and discovery of purpose. Rather than arriving at a to-do-list for potential online facilitators, she discovers that hosting café style conversations, setting the online tables and enabling space for learning, collaboration and aliveness is more a matter of the facilitator’s capacity to listen, to be authentically present and to relinquish control.

Résumé :
Currently, in a similar way to the policies adopted by the organizations, the hospitals lay an enormous effort in the search of the maximum efficiency of the organizational flows. This results in the improvement of the provided services and patient safety, taking into account the profitability of the physical resources and economic conditions. To achieve these goals, it is necessary not only to increase the efficiency of medical equipment throughout their life cycle, but also to prevent the risks associated with their handling, with emphasis on patient safety. The concepts of maintenance management and risk assessment have been evolving towards the adequacy of the policies most adapted to the nature of the facilities and equipment, whether by economic, functional or other classification. The concept of risk in a hospital environment is very diverse. There are physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial risks. Although all risks are important for the safety and well-being of patients, this dissertation/project focuses mainly on biological risks (infections due to viruses, fungi, bacteria and parasites), and physical risks with a special focus on electrical risk. These risks can be partially indexed to the organization and management of the maintenance of hospital facilities and equipment, as this can help to prevent risks; However, with a good evaluation and management of these, maintenance costs can be reduced and unexpected interventions can be avoided. In this context, this article analyzes the main electrical and biological risks, in order to establish a cause-effect relationship with the maintenance policies carried out by the institutions.

M.Ing. (Engineering Management)
Broadly speaking, communication forms an integral component of everyone’s daily activities, be it on a personal level amongst family and friends, or in a professional environment. In many instances, the ability of project teams to communicate effectively and efficiently is taken for granted by project managers, which can result in projects being late or incomplete. However, the importance of Project Communications Management is evident in the fact that the Project Management Institute (PMI) dedicates a chapter to Project Communications Management in the PMBOK® Guide. The current research seeks to understand what effect communication has on a project, and how it can be successfully managed during a project. The research in the form of a case study investigated the state of communications within a project department, with the aim of identifying whether a lack of communication during a project is a contributing factor to projects being late or incorrect. The department in question is responsible for supplying the mining industry with critical conveyor drive equipment. The case study research was conducted utilizing the procedure outlined in the Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®). The research found that certain areas in the department lacked the basic requirements for effective communications, and that a lack of communication between various stakeholders during a project could negatively influence the success of a project. These findings were compared to those of independent research by the PMI into global trends of project communications. The important aspects relating to Project Communication Management were discussed, and a workable solution to the problem was proposed. It was found that by implementing a communication plan in the department, and encouraging a culture of open and honest communications, the organization can expect to see an improvement in project success.

Résumé :
M.Ed. (Educational Leadership and Management)
In post-apartheid South Africa, socio-economic and socio-political challenges coupled with serious lack of adequate physical resources in historically disadvantaged public schools are barriers to effective curriculum delivery and the provision of co-curricular activities. The National Norms and Standards for School Funding policy has been designed to address equity and social justice by providing substantial funding to public schools ranked as quintile 1 and 2. The State funding has been earmarked for, amongst others, the purchase of learning and teaching support materials and other phyiscal assets for educational purposes. This study determines the perceptions and experiences of teachers and school managers on the management of physical resources. Governing bodies have been empowered and are held accountable to manage physical assets at public schools. In the case of fee paying schools, the State provides limited funding and consequently, governing bodies are expected to raise funds in order to supplement the State’s funds so that additional physical resources that further the ends of effective education in every public school, may be procured. The management of physical resources is found to be ineffective and inefficient in many schools, paricularly historically disadvantaged schools. This study was framed using the quantitative research method. A structured questionnaire was distributed to a randomly stratified sample consisting mainly of post level one educators and members of the school management teams. This research was conducted at 30 public schools in the Gauteng East district. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: Section A required the respondents’ biograhical details; Section B comprised of 30 items on the management of physcial resources at public schools and Section C contained 11 items indicating the processes concerned with physical resources management. The analytical procedures applied in the empirical investigation revealed that physical resource management consists of three factors, namely, effective management of phyical resources; effective procurement of physical resources; and the provisioning of physical resources by the Provincial Education vi Department. The findings revealed that the educators agree that the governing body effectively manage and effectively procure resources for the school. There was only partial agreement that the Provincial Education Department provides physical resources adequately. It was found that governing bodies and school management teams need to be provided with continual training by the Provincial Education Department. Furthermore, it appears that whilst structures and processes are established to manage physical resources, there is need to constantly appraise and review their functionality.

Due to the cycle of the international economic downturn, the change of the domestic economic structure and the change of the political situation, the unemployment rate is worsening. The demand for human resources in domestic vocational training organization is also influenced by the market, making less and less many demands for skill learning that requires long time of devotions. The study will discuss the correlation between the demand for equipment components and the number of the trainees and establish the prediction model of the demand for equipment components. It is hoped that the model can provide the following researchers with related issues and understandings of changes in future vocational trainings. People who join vocational trainings can learn to improve their competitiveness for workplaces more fully and effectively. The study takes one vocational training organization for example, listing three demands for equipment components from the first quarter to the fourth quarter in 2011. The original statistics are processed in order to find internal regularity, establishing a grey prediction model of equipment spare parts. Meanwhile, exponetial smoothing methods, moving average methods and classwise-partial least squares are used to predict the outcome. Then residuals and post error checks respectively examine four predictions and find that the accuracy of every prediction method is as high as more than 0.89. Compared with the above-mentioned methods, GM (1.1) model is more accurate. The accuracy of the demands for three equipment components lies between 94.52% and 99.85%. We can infer that in 2012 the total demands for three equipment components will be expected to rise slightly. The demand for the equipment component A tends to rise and the component B doesn’t change significantly. But conversely demands for the component C decline. In addition, the study making use of correlation coefficients finds the highly positive correlation between the damaged equipment components and the number of the trainees. To summarize the research, the study suggests that vocational training organizations should consider the number of trainees during trainings to prepare the number of components needed, avoiding unnecessary waste of resources and time.

Résumé :
Nowadays, due to the increasing competition level, companies must find ways to differentiate. Service development can be a differentiating factor when compared to low-cost competitors. It may provide ways to identify and address specific customer needs by delivering innovative business solutions by regular support and direct contact, which can ultimately be translated into a source of competitive advantage. This business project emerges from the need of the company to improve its competitive position. Following a market analysis, it was concluded that the way to do it was to focus on a specialized range of services centred on industrial systems automation, offering a standardized portfolio of automation products as the basis for customized solutions. To this end, the company has created a questionnaire that allows it to get an overview of the customers' plants’ procedures and identify their equipment’s failures and needs. The goal of this business project consists on developing a model that, through the results analysis of the questionnaire, generates recommendations based on the company’s products, which will allow the company to solve the previously identified failures and add value to its customers. The philosophy used in creating the recommendations is the Total Productive Maintenance. Moreover, the model has been tested by a real customer to verify its feasibility. In the future, the expected outcome is to link these recommendations to potential services that will enable the company to offer not only products but a solution containing the product and all activities necessary for its best working performance.

The overall automation industry is dominated by a few major multinationals and this industry has experienced a revolution in the 1980’s when computers were introduced as human machine interfaces and pneumatic instruments were replaced by digital instruments. Although this revolution changed the way automation technology was perceived, over the last few decades the industry has not experienced significant technological success in term of breakthrough innovation that would advance its solutions offerings to the market. On the contrary, the underlying technology has to an extent commoditized like IT and the playing field has been largely stagnant. Commoditization of technology being a reality, the only differentiating facets for the industry are the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) skills, capabilities and abilities to maintain strategic advantage. This research utilizes the theoretical frameworks of Resource Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities (DC) to evaluate the strategic competitiveness and sustainability of industrial automation OEM’s in Africa. The subject matter of this case study is Schneider Electric, this OEM operates across the continuous and discreet automation spectrums with a presence across Africa. The case study identifies the Dynamic Capabilities of an industrial automation OEM by using Schneider Electric as a reference to understand how industrial automation OEM’s can develop and sustain strategic competitiveness within the industry in Africa. This study also identifies the predicament of an industrial automation OEM to invest in resources and undertake actions that are required to maintain competitiveness on the African continent.
O objecto deste estudo é a Schneider Electric.

This thesis describes the background and findings of a study of effective schools and learners achievement in Botswana senior secondary schools from an education management perspective. The aim was to identify schools that promote learners’ achievement when the students’ initial intakes were considered. The study was guided by five research questions. The study adopted an ex post facto design and a quantitative value added methodology to answer the research questions. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample of 5662 from the population of 58 032 students who wrote the BGCSE examinations for 2005, 2006 and 2007. Two sets of data: prior and later achievements at individual student level were collected from BEC and Secondary Education. The statistical software, MLwiN 2.10 beta 4, which is based on hierarchical linear modelling or multilevel modelling, was used to analyse the data for the value added by schools. The findings indicated that a) schools differ in their effectiveness. Some schools were more effective than others; b) Ten characteristics of effective schools were identified from the literature review c) schools differed in their consistency across the three core curriculum areas of Setswana, English and Mathematics; d) schools differed in their stability from year to year and e) schools were differentially effective. They were effective for the mid ability students and boys more than the other groups. The study confirmed that the use of a single statistic measure even in value added analysis could be misleading because of the internal variations between departments in schools. Furthermore, the uses of raw results for measuring school effectiveness were misleading. Some schools which were at the top in raw results were not doing so well in terms of value added and vice versa. The value added measures of school performance proved to be the most appropriate measure of school’s contribution to students’ learning. The value added by schools is also a measure of schools’ productivity. The study made recommendations to improve practice, such as the use of appropriate and fairer methods to evaluate and compare schools. The areas that need further attention were suggested based on the findings of the study.
