Résumé :
AbstractElevenPopulus×generosapopulations were developed in the Pacific Northwest by annual controlled hybridization ofP. deltoidesandP. trichocarpabetween 1991 and 2001. Mass selection forMelampsoraleaf rust resistance was observed in the field as a threshold character in identifying seedling phenotypes for clonally replicated evaluation. The effectiveness of the approach was assessed for each annual population by comparing the distribution of phenotypes in unselected seedling populations with the distribution of selected genotypes in the clonal field tests established in successive years and evaluated at the approximate same level of disease severity using two selection thresholds corresponding to chlorotic and healthy tissue. Bi-directional selection was used as an initial check on the efficacy of the procedure and resulted in a wide separation in liability between the positive (0.06 threshold units (T.U.)) and negative (−2.45 T.U.) selection groups when tested as clones. The other 10 seedling populations that were subjected solely to directional selection exhibited a mean increase in incidence above the first selection threshold at the clonal stage (47 versus 81%) that was accompanied by an improvement in population liability (−0.06 versus 0.50 T.U.) and a reduction in population standard deviation (0.83 versus 0.54 T.U.). The change in liability was strongly related by polynomial regression to selection intensity and a grouping of populations based on infection-season precipitation (r2=0.98). The mean liability of four of the 10 seedling populations observed during years of high infection-season rainfall was six-fold lower than the mean liability of those populations observed during the other six years of lower infection-season rainfall (−0.12 T.U. versus −0.02 T.U., respectively), indicating that populations undergoing evaluation during years of heavy precipitation experienced more intense rust exposure. Moreover, quadratic functions showed that populations undergoing rust evaluation during years of high rainfall were more responsive to increases in selection intensity above the vertex of the function (i.e. 13.20 versus 3.43 T.U.). Realized heritability averaged 0.63 for all ten populations subjected solely to directional selection.

Résumé :
Regularity is one of the important characteristics of the students. It measures the overall discipline of the students. In Nepal, different universities are run by the government as well as private sectors. Regular attendance is not maintained by the students because of different factors. The objectives is to investigate causes of irregularity and analyze its effects on the student’s overall academic performance are two main objectives of this study. Quantitative research design and Semi-structured questionnaire was considered in this research. A probability sampling design (Stratified Random Sampling) was used to select 150 units from the T.U constituent campuses and T.U. affiliated private (3/10) campuses located in the Kathmandu Valley. The finding of the study is different factors like employment, marital status, age, nature of subjects, and effective lecture are the key factors to make students irregular in college. Regularity and academic performance were highly correlated. Students who were regularly on campus had very good academic performance otherwise bad academic performance. Pearson’s coefficient of correlation was +0.873, Regression coefficient byx=0.873 Value of R2=0.761. The conclusion of the study is irregularity rate in the MBS level of T.U. is very high, and academic performance and regularity in the class are highly correlated, if regularity is maintained then it caused very good academic performance. Different factors caused the irregularity of the students on campus. Strict rules and regulations should be formulated to make students regular. The syllabus should be updated from time to time and strict rules and regulations should be applied to make this program effective.

Total management refers to managing all elements/components and resources of the organization through analyzing the environmental situations and carrying out SWOT analysis so that the system of smooth operation can be ensured to accomplish the organizational goals. This article has analyzed the problems of T.U. under three components (i.e. teachers, staffs and students) with reference to the allocated resources (i.e. human, financial, physical and informational). Three major problems were identified separately through factor analysis which covers more than80% of the problems related to each component and resources. The study shows that there are three major causes of all the problems in T.U. They are: Firstly, the appointment of executives, teachers and staffs is not done on the basis of senerioty and quality and placement of right kind of manpower are not made on the basis of the requirement of the job to be per formed in efficient and effective manner. The second major cause is lack of commitment of employees towards their job (i.e. lack of dedication, devotion, determination and discipline). The third major cause is the dissatisfaction of employee in terms of salary, incentives, reward, and punishment.

This is a retrospective study of fine needle aspiration cytology of breast lesionsperformed between May 1998 and April 2000. During this period, a total of 2001 fineneedle aspirations were done in the Tribhuvan Universtiy Teaching Hospital (TUTH),of which 470 (23.48 %) were of the breast. Fibrocystic disease found to be the mostfrequent and was diagnosed in 183 cases (38.9%). Fibroadenoma was the third commonpathological condition, numbering 61 (12.9%). Malignant conditions of the breastwere 72 cases (15.3%).During these two years, histological diagnosis was available in 154 cases. Histologicalexamination revealed benign conditions in 74 cases (48%), malignancy in 59 cases(38.3%) and inflammatory & lactational changes in 21 cases (13.7%). Out of these154 cases, 71 cases had also undergone fine needle aspiration cytology. The 36 casesdiagnosed as benign cytologically, 34 cases were also benign histologically, whereas 2cases turned out to be malignant. Out of 37 cases that were histologically malignant,on cytology 35 cases were diagnosed as malignant. The sensitivity and specificity ofcytopathological diagnosis for breast lesions was 100% and 94.6% respectively.Inflammatory lesions correlated well cytologically and histolgically.FNAC is a safe and rapid diagnostic method for evaluation of various lesions. However, there are possibilities of false negative and false positive results because of wide rangeof appearance of breast lesions.Key Words: Breast lumps, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology, Benign Lesions,Malignant Lesions, Histopathology and Correlation.

Résumé :
AbstractWe present the results of isotope measurements (δ18O, δ D, δ13CDICand14C) and chemical analyses (TDS, TOC, HCO3-, SO42-, Cl-, NO3-, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+Na+and K+) conducted on groundwater samples collected from deep Cenozoic aquifers. These aquifers are the basic source of drinking water at numerous localities within the study area in northern Poland. Most of the δ18O determinations are characterised by low variability (i.e., > 70 per cent of δ18O are between -9.5‰ and -9.2‰). In most cases tritium activity was not detected or its content slightly exceeded the uncertainty of measurement (from ±0.3 T.U. to ± 0.5 T.U.). On average, 14C activity is twice higher than that under similar conditions and in hydrogeological systems. The δ13CDICvalues fall within the -13.6‰ to -12.8‰ range. A slight variability is observed when considering all isotope and chemical data within the study area and under these hydrogeological conditions. In general, the results of isotope and chemical analyses seem to be homogeneous, indicating the presence of closely similar groundwaters in the system, irrespective of geological formation. It is likely that there is a significant hydraulic connection between shallow and deep aquifers in the Gwda catchment, which indicates the potential for seepage of pollutants from shallow Pleistocene to deep Miocene aquifers. This can endanger the latter by e.g., high concentrations of NO3-, SO42-and Cl-ions from shallow aquifers within the Gwda catchment.

Résumé :
Saline groundwaters from the Israeli coastal aquifer were analyzed for their radiocarbon and tritium content to assess the rate of seawater penetration. The low 14C values (28–88 pMC versus 100–117 pMC in seawater) imply an apparent non-recent seawater source, or water-rock interactions along the penetration route. The latter process is supported by measurable tritium values at some locations, which imply a relatively rapid rate of seawater intrusion. In other locations, low tritium values (<2 T.U.) indicate that recent seawater (<50 yr) did not penetrate inland. The low δ13C values in saline groundwater (average of −5.3‰ versus 0‰ in seawater) indicate that the dissolved carbon pool is comprised of a significant fraction of organic carbon. A linear negative correlation between δ13C and 14C implies that this organic source is old (low 14C values).

Yeryomenko G.V, Ospanova T.S, Khimich T.U, Bezditko T.V, Bolokadze E. O., Mizhiritskaya T.V.Patients with asthma accompanied by obesity in a higher body mass index were found to have an increased “waist/hip volume” ratio as compared to patients with asthma and healthy subjects. Assessment of humoral immunity indices in patients with asthma showed an increase of non-specific (with rising concentrations of immunoglobulins Ig A, M, G) and specific (with a rising level of Ig E) immunity. Patients with comorbidity of asthma and obesity were shown to have differently directed changes in the concentration of the main immunoglobulins: with a decrease in IgA and IgM levels there was a significant increase in IgG concentration. Those changes were accompanied by a significant reduction in the number of circulating immune complexes and an increase in concentration of lymphocyte antibodies in the blood of patients with comorbidity of asthma and obesity. This fact may indicate an aggravating effect of obesity on the course of asthma and a change in the direction of the pathological process to the autoimmune one that should be taken into consideration when treating such patients. Résumé :
Abstract A technique for collection and storage of viable celery (Apium graveolens L.) pollen is reported for the cv. Tall Utah 52-70R and the annual strain A143. Umbels at anthesis were dried in an incubator for 14 hr at 31°C, crushed by hand, and passed through a sieve. The pollen released by this operation was collected on a sheet of paper and stored in gelatin capsules. High drying temperatures were detrimental to pollen viability. Pollen collection at different times of the day did not affect viability. After 6 days at 24°, a significant percentage of pollen grains was still viable. The viability declined close to 0% in 9 to 12 days. Pollen of A143 survived better than that of ‘T.U. 52-70R’. Pollen stored for 9 months at 4° maintained a viability of 45% to 50%, but declined close to 0% by the 18th month. Pollen stored at −10° maintained a viability of 10% to 30% by the 18th month. Storage of celery pollen at −10° for 6 to 9 months will keep enough viability for pollinations. Use of stored viable pollen will help with the crossing of celery, as it is often difficult to synchronize the flowering of different plants.

Résumé :
Teaching is a challenging job. It requires mentoring and helping students to grasp the meaning and understand the message the subject delivers. A teacher is one who inspires guides, enlightens and motivates the learner. It is lifelong process. This article is based on narrative inquiry research on the lived experience of a recently retired English teacher from Tribhuvan University who contributed a lot in English education. It explores how a master degree holder in English education joined at university and constructed and reconstructed his identity in his teaching profession unless he retired. Data were collected from face to face in depth interviews and telephone conversation then analyzed through narrative case analysis. The findings show that a university English teacher develops and modifies his identity through engaging himself in different professional development activities, interacting with different socializing factors and experiencing various emotions in university activities. He also works as curriculum developer, examiner, and invigilator, external and internal examiner in practical examinations. He has to labour hard in his whole professional period and has to balance his emotional behaviours, that is, happy moments as well as frustrated moments. The paper concludes with some implications for language teachers in context of education campuses under faculty of education in T.U.

Cuttings beds were prepared using 3:1 sand and soil. Different concentration of auxins such as IAA, NAA and IBA were found effective in inducing rooting. During July, the stem cuttings treated with 1000 ppm IAA for 30 minutes induced highest percentage (90 %) and statistically signifi cant (P< 0.05) rooting while those treated with same concentration and time induced only 40% rooting during April. Like wise other auxins NAA and IBA induced more rooting during July and less rooting during April. Cuttings planted as control, during July showed 10 % rooting while during April did not show any rooting. Among all the auxins studied, IAA hormone and rainy season was found to be the most effective for rooting of G. biloba cuttings. From the anatomical study it was revealed that vascular cambium, secondary phloem, cortical cells and pericycle cells took part on rooting. Successfully rooted cuttings were then transferred to the natural soil condition. J. Nat. Hist. Mus. Vol. 26, 2012: 175-180

Here, using the optical tracer FM 1-43, we characterize the details of synaptic vesicle recycling at individual synaptic boutons in hippocampal cell cultures derived from mice lacking synapsin I or wild-type equivalents. These studies show that both the number of vesicles exocytosed during brief action potential trains and the total recycling vesicle pool are significantly reduced in the synapsin I-deficient mice, while the kinetics of endocytosis and synaptic vesicle repriming appear normal.

Résumé :
The article discusses the problem of developing means that can increase the efficiency of mechanization of the process of preparing liquid feed in animal husbandry. Design bureaus, research and technological institutes for mechanization and electrification of agriculture have developed new progressive technologies, as well as kits, units, machines and apparatus for animal husbandry and fodder production. On the basis of this technique, complex mechanization of farms is being introduced and livestock complexes with industrial production technology are being created. But recently, the widespread use of domestic machines for the preparation of liquid feed mixtures has not been presented. Therefore, an experimental setup is proposed that combines three functions: a batcher, a pump and a mixer, which ultimately allows to obtain a mixture of good quality. The article provides a program and research methodology for the installation. For this, a special stand has been developed, which makes it possible to determine the parameters of the mixture quality and the specific consumption of electrical energy. As a search for the optimal combination of factors for the optimization criteria: the degree of homogeneity and the specific consumption of electrical energy, plan 32 was chosen. Experimental studies have shown the range of supply of the installation at different speeds of rotation of the impeller shaft. Mixing studies have confirmed the effectiveness of the design of the plant and its components: dispenser, pump and mixer. With the help of experimental planning methods, the main factors influencing the mixing process are identified, and the optimal parameters of the mixture quality are determined. According to the studies carried out on the continuous introduction of components in an experimental installation for the preparation of liquid feed mixtures, we obtained that the optimal combinations of factors would be the water temperature t = 26...38 C and the rotation frequency n = 1500...1650 min1, while the degree of homogeneity reaches = 94,6 % and unit costs of electric energy Eel = 0,198 kWh/t.u. st.un.

Résumé :
Basal metabolic rate (BMR), thyroxine utilization rate (T4U), and triiodothyronine utilization rate (T3U) were measured in cold-acclimated (CA) and room temperature-acclimated (RA) male golden hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus. Hormone utilization rates were calculated via the plasma disappearance technique using 125I-labeled hormones and measuring serum hormone levels via radioimmunoassay. BMR showed a significant 28% increase with cold acclimation from 4.50 +/- 0.05 to 5.77 +/- 0.10 ml O2 X h-1 X g-2/3. The same cold exposure also produced a 32% increase in T4U (10.75 +/- 0.51 vs. 14.19 +/- 0.75 ng X day-1 X g-2/3), and a 204% increase in T3U (5.51 +/- 0.53 vs. 16.77 +/- 1.35). The much greater increase in T3U implies that previous assessments of the relationship between cold acclimation and thyroid function may have been underestimated and that cold exposure induces both quantitative and qualitative changes in thyroid function. It is concluded that in the cold-acclimated state, T3U more accurately reflects thyroid function than does T4U. A mechanism for the cold-induced change in BMR is proposed, for which alterations in four aspects of thyroid function are required: a decrease in plasma T4 binding, an elevation of the pituitary T4 "set point," a preferential shift in deiodinase activity from reverse T3 to T3 production, and an increase in the thyroidal secretion of T3.

Résumé :
The produced and extraction process of pyritic would generate a large amount of pyritic mineral processing solid waste. This kind of waste can lead to land occupation, and contaminate the local water, air and soil. Therefore, in this paper, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans are used to deal with the pyritic mineral processing solid waste. The particles, catalysts and bioleaching products between microorganism and pyritic mineral processing solid wast were studied. It is indicated that the microorganism growth and the heavy metals leaching efficiency involve biological and chemical interactions. The experimental results suggested that the T.t was best to bioleach the pyritic mineral processing solid waste, and the efficiency of T.f was worse than that of T.t. The leaching effect of mixed bacterias of T.t and T.f fell in between, the leaching rate would decrease when the pulp density increased. The micro-morphology of bacteria was observed by SEM detector, the single cellular dimension of bioleaching bactreia was about (1~2) μm × (0.2~0.5) μm.

Résumé :
Jute is a bio-degradable, agro-renewable, and widely available lingo cellulosic fiber having high tensile strength and initial modulus, moisture regain, good sound, and heat insulation properties. For these unique properties and eco-friendly nature of jute fibers, jute-based products are now widely used in many sectors such as packaging, home textiles, agro textiles, build textiles, and so forth. The diversified applications of jute products create an excellent opportunity to mitigate the negative environmental effect of petroleum-based products. For producing the best quality jute products, the main prerequisite is to ensure the jute yarn quality that can be defined by the load at break (L.B), strain at break (S.B), tenacity at break (T.B), and tensile modulus (T.M). However, good quality yarn production by considering these parameters is quite difficult because these parameters follow a non-linear relationship. Therefore, it is essential to build up a model that can cover this entire inconsistent pattern and forecast the yarn quality accurately. That is why, in this study, a laboratory-based research work was performed to develop a fuzzy model to predict the quality of jute yarn considering L.B, S.B, T.B, and T.M as input parameters. For this purpose, 173 tex (5 lb/spindle) and 241 tex (7 lb/spindle) were produced, and then L.B, S.B, T.B and T.M values were measured. Using this measured value, a fuzzy model was developed to determine the optimum L.B, S.B, T.B, and T.M to produce the best quality jute yarn. In our proposed fuzzy model, for 173 tex and 241 tex yarn count, the mean relative error was found to be 1.46% (Triangular membership) and 1.48% (Gaussian membership), respectively, and the correlation coefficient was 0.93 for both triangular and gaussian membership function. This result validated the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy model for an industrial application. The developed fuzzy model may help a spinner to produce the best quality jute yarn.

Résumé :
Abstract Population and economic growth within the Durban Metropolitan region in eastern South Africa have increased the demand for water supply. Though the region’s water supply comes mainly from surface water sources, the ever-increasing demand means that all available water supply sources including groundwater will be looked at, particularly in the peri-urban areas. However, the state of the groundwater resource in the region is poorly understood. This study aims to contribute towards improved understanding of the state of groundwater resources in the Metropolitan District through an integrated hydrogeological, hydrochemical and environmental isotope investigations. Results of the hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical characterization identified at least five hydrostratigraphic units of varying hydraulic and hydrochemical characteristics: the weathered and fractured basement aquifers of the Mapumulo Group, Oribi Gorge, Mzimlilo and Mkhomazi Suites characterized by average borehole yield and transmissivity (T) of 1.2 l/s, and 3.9 m2/day, respectively, and hydrochemical facies of Ca-Mg-HCO3;the fractured Natal Group sandstone characterised by average borehole yield and hydraulic conductivity (K) of 5.6 l/s and 2.8 m/day, respectively and with Na-Mg-HCO3-Cl dominant water type;the fractured aquifers of the Dwyka Group diamictite and tillite characterized by average borehole yield of 0.4 l/s, transmissivity of 1.3 m2/day and Na-Cl-HCO3 dominant water type;the Vryheid Formation of the Ecca Group characterized by average borehole yield of 2.5 l/s, T of 4.9 m2/day, K values 0.17 m/day, and Na-Cl-HCO3 water type. The Pietermaritzburg Formation of the Ecca Group is characterized by a shale lithology with very low borehole yields and average transmissivity of 0.28 m2/d with Na-Ca-Cl dominant water type. It is considered as an aquiclude than an aquifer;the intergranular aquifer of the Maputaland Group which comprises the Bluff, Berea type sands and harbour beds (recent alluvium and estuarine deposits). These units collectively have average borehole yield of 14.8 l/s, transmissivity of up to 406 m2/day and a mainly Na-Cl-HCO3 hydrochemical signature. The region receives mean annual precipitation (MAP) of 935 mm/yr of which an estimated 6.6% recharges the various aquifers. Environmental isotope data (2H, 18O and 3H) indicated that groundwater is recharged from modern precipitation. High concentrations of tritium, as high as 92 T.U., measured around landfill sites, indicates groundwater contamination from leachate leakage posing a risk to human and environmental health.

Résumé :
Increasing attention has been paid to the possible link between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis over the past decade. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of five periopathogens: Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g.), Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a.), Tannerella forsythia (T.f.), Treponema denticola (T.d.), and Prevotella intermedia (P.i.) in atheromatous plaques obtained from the carotid and coronary arteries in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery and carotid endarterectomy. Group I (carotid arteries) consisted of 30 patients (mean age: 54.5 ± 14.8 ), and group II (coronary arteries) consisted of 28 patients (mean age: 63 ± 12.1 ). Clinical periodontal examinations consisted of plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, and periodontal probing depth and were performed on the day of vascular surgery. The presence of periopathogens in periodontal pockets and atherosclerotic vessels was detected using polymerase chain reaction. In both subgingival plaque and atherosclerotic plaque of carotid arteries, P.g., A.a., T.f., T.d., and P.i. were detected in 26.7%, 6.7%, 66.7%, 10.0%, and 20.0%, respectively, while for coronary arteries, P.g. was detected in 39.3%, A.a. in 25%, T.f. in 46.4%, T.d. in 7.1%, and P.i. in 35.7%. The presence of five periopathogens in carotid and coronary atherosclerotic vessels showed correlation in regard to the degree of periodontal inflammation. The present study suggests the relationship between periodontal pathogenic bacteria and atherogenesis. Further studies are necessary in relation to the prevention or treatment of periodontal disease that would result in reduced mortality and morbidity associated with atherosclerosis.

Résumé :
The age of inflammatory periodontal disease (PD) manifestations has tended to decrease over the past decades. The study of the range of periodontal pathogens in young people and their influence on the PD manifestation contributes to the predictor identification for the early prevention of this pathology. The aim was to study the correlation between the range of periodontal pathogens in the dentoalveolar sulcus/periodontal pocket (DS/PC) contents and the clinical PD manifestations in young people. We examined 28 patients (23.1 ± 0.93 years) with dental biofilm-induced gingivitis (BG), 24 patients (30.7 ± 0.6 years) with aggressive periodontitis (AgP), and 87 clinically periodontally healthy patients (21.1 ± 0.49 years) (Control). The hygiene index and the periodontal status were determined in all patients. DNA of five periodontal pathogens was identified by PCR in the DS/PC contents. The statistical analysis was performed in Statistica 13.3. The critical significance level was p ≤ 0.05.DNA was not observed in 60.9 % of the control group samples and 7.1 % of the BG group samples. In other cases, the bacteria were found separately and as part of bacterial complexes. P.g. and T.f. were most often detected in all groups. P.g. (U = 474, р < 0.01) and A.a. In the AgP group, purulent discharge was more often recorded if T.d. was detected in the PC contents (χ2 = 5.53, р >< 0.05). T.f. + P.i. and P.g. + T.f. + P.i. complexes were exclusively associated with PD. Complexes of four bacteria were found only in the AgP group. Résumé :
The T cell co-receptor, CD8, binds to the alpha 3 domain of HLA class I (Salter, R.D., R.J. Benjamin, P.K. Wesley, S.E. Buxton, T.P.J. Garrett, C. Clayberger, A.M. Krensky, A.M. Norman, D.R. Littman, and P. Parham. 1990. Nature [Lond.]. 345:41; Connolly, J.M., T.A. Potter, E.M. Wormstall, and T.H. Hansen. 1988. J. Exp. Med. 168:325; and Potter, T.A., T.V. Rajan, R.F. Dick II, and J.A. Bluestone. 1989. Nature [Lond.]. 337:73). To identify regions of CD8 that are important for binding to HLA class I, we performed a mutational analysis of the CD8 molecule in the immunoglobulin (Ig)-like variable domain. Our mutational analysis was based on our finding that using a cell-cell adhesion assay murine CD8 (Lyt-2) did not bind to human class I. Since the interaction of human CD8 with HLA class I is species specific, we substituted nonconservative amino acids from mouse CD8 and analyzed the ability of the mutated CD8 molecules expressed in COS 7 cells to bind HLA class I-bearing B lymphoblastoid cells, UC. Mutants with the greatest effect on binding were located in a portion of the molecule homologous to the first and second hypervariable regions of an antibody combining site. In addition, a panel of 12 anti-CD8 monoclonal antibodies were used to stain the 10 CD8 mutants, and amino acids that affected antibody binding were localized on the crystal structure of the Bence-Jones homodimer, REI. Support for an Ig-like structure of CD8 can be found in the pattern of substitutions affecting antibody binding. This work supports the similar tertiary structure of the CD8 alpha-terminal domain and an Ig variable domain.

Résumé :
Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) are a promising solution to the demand for large-scale energy storage [1, 2]. A critical component of VRFBs are the electrodes, commonly manufactured from highly porous, carbon materials [3, 4]. The reactivity of electrode materials is of great interest, with previous studies on carbon felt materials revealing a significant degree of performance variability for both pristine and treated electrode samples [5–8]. Thus, the heterogeneous nature of carbon felt needs to be further investigated to better understand performance variations in VRFB systems. Recently, a rate constant distribution has been observed for single fibre electrodes extracted from carbon felt for the ferri/ferrocyanide redox reaction. Importantly, it was found that the distribution of rate constants from single fibre measurements was statistically different depending on which the side of the felt these fibres were extracted from. Although the spatial variation in reaction kinetics was established for the ferri/ferrocyanide redox system, it is thought that this variation may be present with other electroactive species, such as vanadium. It is well established that the properties and performance of carbon felt is enhanced during post-production thermal treatment [9–11]. Therefore, it is not implausible that uneven thermal exposure during manufacturing may also lead to variations in electrode activity. In this study, the influence of electrode configuration on overpotential was investigated for commercially available PAN-based carbon felt using the VO2+/VO2 + redox reaction. Charge and discharge tests were carried out in a flowing half-cell, where the measured half-cell potential was IR-corrected post-run and then compared to the open circuit potential to extract the electrode overpotential. XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and BET surface area analysis are used to characterise the electrode samples so that differences in surface chemistry and structure could be determined. The electrode overpotential was found to be significantly different depending which orientation of felt in the cell, with the overpotential being much lower when the more active side of the electrode faced the membrane. Thermal treatment of the carbon felt in air at 400 °C resulted in this redox activity difference to be minimised. This suggests that one side of the carbon felt may have already possessed the same active surface groups as those which are formed during this thermal treatment, with this thermal treatment acting to equalise the inherent activity of both faces. Résumé :
The earliest refractories for containing melts were quarried from natural deposits of limestone and dolomite. Today these two carbonate rocks serve important roles in the production of metal contact refractories. Early refractories for glass melting on the other hand were manufactured from clays and claystones. These materials are also still used extensively for the batch melting of glasses that are hand formed or blown into art and tableware. Glass contact refractories for the continuous (tank) melting of glass are often fired, cast into large shapes, and arranged in a soldier course which constitutes the sidewalls of the glass tank.In this brief exposition of refractories technology and allied research, the articles by B. Brezny, T.F. Vazza and T.A. Leitzel, and by T.S. Busby cover materials development, selection, and properties of the systems which have evolved for the efficient melting of steels and glasses. As such they relate to extremes of technological flux in the processes for the manufacture of steel and glass, respectively. The continuous melting of large volumes of commercial glasses has been carried out in tanks equipped with reverberators for at least 70 years. The basic design of the overall system and of many of the glass fabrication machines for pressing, rolling, and blowing the glass has been constant since World War I. Only the introduction of the float glass method, the famous Pilkington process, for the production of flat glass, has interrupted the slow quiet progress in the technology of continuous glass making.

Résumé :
BACKGROUND: Oral infections associate statistically with cancer. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that certain periodontal microorganisms might specifically link to malignancies in general and set out to investigate this in our ongoing cohort study. METHODS: A sample of 99 clinically examined patients from our cohort of 1676 subjects was used to statistically investigate the associations between harboring periodontal microorganisms Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a), Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g), Prevotella intermedia (P.i), Tannerella forsythia (T.f) and Treponema denticola (T.d). We used oral infection indexes and the incidence figures of malignancies as registered in 2008–2016 in the Swedish National Cancer Register. RESULTS: The pathogen A.a showed strong association with malignancy in 32 out of the 99 patients while P.g and P.i were more prevalent among patients without malignancy. In principal component analyses, A.a appeared in the strongest component while the second strongest component consisted of a combination of T.f and T.d. The third component consisted of a combination of P.g and P.i, respectively. Of basic and oral health variables, gingival index appeared to be the strongest expression of inflammation (Eigen value 4.11 and Explained Variance 68.44 percent). CONCLUSIONS: The results partly confirmed our hypothesis by showing that harboring certain periodontal bacteria might link to malignancy. However, the associations are statistical and no conclusions can be drawn about causality.

Résumé :
A chair-side test (CST) for five periodontal pathogens (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, A.a.; Porphyromonas gingivalis, P.g.; Prevotella intermedia, P.i.; Treponema denticola, T.d.; Tannerella forsythia, T.f.) was compared with qPCR in a previous clinical study on 100 periodontitis patients at first diagnosis (T0). Following non-surgical treatment alone (SRP) or in combination with systemic or local antibiotics, 74 patients (57.4 ± 13.5 years) were again tested at the same sites from 14 to 24 months after T0. Bacterial elimination (%; compared to T0) was determined for each single species and compared between both test systems. In all patients, all five pathogens could not be fully eliminated regardless of therapy or test method. Tested with CST, the mean elimination ranged from 90% for SRP + Amoxicillin/Metronidazole to 59.13% for SRP only. The corresponding qPCR values were 30% and 29.6%. Only A.a. was eradicated in 100% by SRP + Amoxicillin/Metronidazole tested by CST, and it was 80% when qPCR was the test method. CST agreed with qPCR in 98.7% in the detection of A.a., and 74.3%, 78.4%, 73.0%, and 48.7% for P.g., P.i., T.d., and T.f., respectively. Neither conventional treatment nor the additional use of antibiotics—even with the correct indication—could completely eradicate the tested pathogens or prevent pocket reinfection.

Résumé :
Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease that is considered the most common liver disease all over the world. It causes metabolic and hepatic damage that can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Objective: Our research pointed to study the preventive effects of canagliflozin (CANA) or atorvastatin (ATO) on dexamethasone-induced hepatic steatosis and dyslipidemia. Methods: Animals were grouped as; control group; DEX group; ATO/DEX-treated group; CANA/DE-treated group and ATO+CANA/DEX-treated group. Results: Significant elevations in GSH, SOD and CAT activities, while high significant decreases in serum GOT, GPT, ALP, urea, blood glucose, CK-MB, LDH, T.G, T.C, MDA and P.C levels were demonstrated in treated groups as compared to DEX group in the experimental periods. Also, significant reductions in SGPT, SGPT, ALP, CK-MB, LDH, T.C and T.G levels were detected in CANA/DEX group as compared to ATO/DEX group. All these results were confirmed with histopathological findings where the severe damages and fatty degeneration in both kidney and liver tissues developed by dexamethasone administration resolved by administration of atorvastatin alone or better with Canagliflozin. Conclusion: These results indicate that canagliflozin was as effective as atorvastatin or combination of both in reducing dyslipidemia and hepatic steatosis. The antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects of canagliflozin may be responsible for the beneficial effects.

Résumé :
We have calculated the total time of exposure to radiation on 25 patients undergoing scleroembolisation of spermatic veins. The aim of our study is to find the exact step in this procedure where we can act in order to shorten the total time of exposure. The procedure has been divided into 4 steps: V.R.: time for selective catheterisation of renal vein; V.S.: time for superselective catheterisation of the spermatic vein; T.S.: time for scleroembolisation; T.E.: total time of exposure. In our study the average time was 55’.2”, 53’.6” and 1’.24” for the V.R., V.S., and T.S., respectively The average time for the entire procedure was 3’.17”. As the effects of X-rays on spermatogenesis are well-known, we believe it is necessary to shorten as much as possible the total time of exposure to radiation.
