Résumé :
We deal with several problems on the surfaces obtained as second symmetric products of smooth projective curves. In particular, we treat both some attempts at extending the notion of gonality for curves and some classical problems, as the study of the ample cone in the Néron-Severi group. Moreover, we develop a family of examples of Lagrangian surfaces having particular topological properties.

The contribution of this thesis is divided naturally into two parts. In Part I we generalise the work of Khuri-Makdisi (2004) on algorithms for divisor arithmetic on curves over fields to more general bases. We prove that the natural analogues of the results of Khuri-Makdisi continue to hold for relative effective Cartier divisors on projective schemes which are smooth of relative dimension one over an arbitrary affine Noetherian base scheme and that natural analogues of the algorithms remain valid in this context for a certain class of base rings. We introduce a formalism for such rings, which are characterised by the existence of a certain subset of the usual linear algebra operations for projective modules over these rings.Part II of this thesis is concerned with a type of Riemann-Roch problem for divisors on certain algebraic surfaces. Specifically we consider algebraic surfaces arising as the square or the symmetric square of a hyperelliptic curve of genus at least two over an (almost) arbitrary field. The main results are a decomposition of the spaces of global sections of certain divisors on such surfaces and explicit formulæ for the dimensions of the spaces of sections of these divisors. In the final chapter we present an algorithm which generates a basis for the space of global sections of such a divisor

Résumé :
Given a real N by N matrix A, write p(A) for the maximum angle by which A rotates any unit vector. Suppose that A and B are positive definite symmetric (PDS) N by N matrices. Then their Jordan product {A, B} := AB + BA is also symmetric, but not necessarily positive definite. If p(A) + p(B) is obtuse, then there exists a special orthogonal matrix S such that {A, SBS^(-1)} is indefinite. Of course, if A and B commute, then {A, B} is positive definite. Our work grows from the following question: if A and B are commuting positive definite symmetric matrices such that p(A) + p(B) is obtuse, what is the minimal p(S) such that {A, SBS^(-1)} indefinite? In this dissertation we will describe the level curves of the angle function mapping a unit vector x to the angle between x and Ax for a 3 by 3 PDS matrix A, and discuss their interaction with those of a second such matrix.

Faltings' theorem states that curves of genus g > 2 have finitely many rational points. Using the ideas of Faltings, Mumford, Parshin and Raynaud, one obtains an upper bound on the upper bound on the number of rational points, XI, [paragraph]2, but this bound is too large to be used in any reasonable sense. In 1985, Coleman showed that Chabauty's method, which works when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian of the curve is smaller than g, can be used to give a good effective bound on the number of rational points of curves of genus g > 1. We draw ideas from nonarchimedean geometry to show that we can also give an effective bound on the number of rational points outside of the special set of Symd X, where X is a curve of genus g > d, when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian of the curve is at most g > d.

Résumé :
The objects of study in this thesis are symmetric products and spaces of algebraic cycles. The first new result concerns symmetric products and it describes the geometry of truncated symmetric products (or, in other terminology, symmetric products modulo 2). We prove that if M is a closed compact connected triangulable manifold, a necessary and sufficient condition for its symmetric products modulo 2 to be manifolds is that M is a circle. We also show that the symmetric products of the circle modulo 2 are homeomorphic to real projective spaces and give an interpretation of this homeomorphism as a real topological analogue of Vieta's theorem. The second result concerns the spaces of real algebraic cycles, first studied by T.K. Lam. We describe a method of calculating the homotopy groups of the spaces of real cycles with integral coefficients on projective spaces; we give an explicit formula for the groups which lie in the "stable range". The third result (or, rather, a group of results) is the construction of a quaternionic analogue of Lawson's theory of algebraic cycles. We define quaternionic objects as those, which are invariant (in the case of varieties) or equivalent (in the case of polynomials) with respect to a free involution on CP2n+1, induced by the action of the quaternion j on Hn. Basic properties of quaternionic algebraic cycles are studied; a rational "quaternionic suspension theorem" is proved and the spaces of quaternionic cycles with rational coefficients on CP2n+1 are described. We also present a method of calculating the Betti numbers of the spaces of quaternionic cycles of degree 2 and odd codimension on CP. Some other results that are included in the thesis are a twisted version of the Dold-Thom theorem and an interpretation of the Kuiper-Massey theorem via symmetric products. After the main results on quaternionic cycles were proved, the author learned that similar results were obtained by Lawson, Lima-Filho and Michelson. Their version of the quaternionic suspension theorem is stronger and requires more sophisticated machinery for the proof.

Given a Hopf algebra R, the Grothendieck group of C = R-mod inherits the structure of a ring. We define a ring [mathematical equation]), which is "the [mathematical equation] limit" of the Grothendieck rings of modules for the wreath products [mathematical equation]; it is the Grothendieck group of a certain wreath product Deligne category. The construction yields a basis of [mathematical equation] corresponding to irreducible objects. The structure constants of this basis are stable tensor product multiplicities for the wreath products [mathematical equation]. We generalise [mathematical equation], allowing an arbitrary ring to be substituted for the Grothendieck ring of C. Aside from being a Hopf algebra, [mathematical equation] is the algebra of distributions on a certain affine group scheme. In the special case where C is the category of vector spaces (over C, say), [mathematical equation] is the ring of symmetric functions. The basis obtained by our construction is the family of stable Specht polynomials, which is closely related to the problem of calculating restriction multiplicities from [mathematical equation]. We categorify the stable Specht polynomials by producing a resolution of irreducible representations of S[subscript n] by modules restricted from [mathematical equation].

Résumé :
We construct a new operation among representations of the symmetric group that interpolates between the classical internal and external products, which are defined in terms of tensor product and induction of representations. Following Malvenuto and Reutenauer, we pass from symmetric functions to non-commutative symmetric functions and from there to the algebra of permutations in order to relate the internal and external products to the composition and convolution of linear endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. The new product we construct corresponds to the Heisenberg product of endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. For symmetric functions, the Heisenberg product is given by a construction which combines induction and restriction of representations. For non-commutative symmetric functions, the structure constants of the Heisenberg product are given by an explicit combinatorial rule which extends a well-known result of Garsia, Remmel, Reutenauer, and Solomon for the descent algebra. We describe the dual operation among quasi-symmetric functions in terms of alphabets.

Résumé :
Given a finite group $G$, the smallest $n$ such that $G$ embeds into the symmetric group $S_n$ is referred to as the minimal degree. Much of the accumulated literature focuses on the interplay between minimal degrees and direct products. This thesis extends this to cover large classes of semidirect products. Chapter 1 provides a background for minimal degrees - stating and proving a number of essential theorems and outlining relevant previous work, along with some small original results. Chapter 2 calculates the minimal degrees for an infinite class of semidirect products - specifically the semidirect products of elementary abelian groups by groups of prime order not dividing the order of the base group. This is established using vector space theory, including a number of novel techniques. The utility of this research is then demonstrated by answering an existing problem in the field of minimal degrees in a new and potentially generalisable way.

Résumé :

This thesis makes a survey of converse theorems for Dirichlet series. A converse theo-rem gives sufficient conditions for a Dirichlet series to be the Dirichlet series attachedto a modular form. Such Dirichlet series have special properties, such as a functionalequation and an Euler product. Sometimes these properties characterize the modularform completely, i.e. they are sufficient to prove the proper transformation behaviourunder some discrete group. The problem dates back to Hecke and Weil, and has morerecently been treated by Conrey et.al. The articles surveyed are:

  • "An extension of Hecke's converse theorem", by B. Conrey and D. Farmer
  • "Converse theorems assuming a partial Euler product", by D. Farmer and K.Wilson
  • "A converse theorem for ¡0(13)", by B. Conrey, D. Farmer, B. Odgers and N.Snaith

The results and the proofs are described. The second article is found to contain anerror. Finally an alternative proof strategy is proposed.

Résumé :
Cold metal forming processes have been widely used for manufacturing of their high production rates and increased yield strength after forming process. For the use in service, increased yield strength of the cold-formed products should be known. The new yield strength can be found by several methods. Mechanical tests such as compression or tensile test are direct methods to obtain new yield strength if the product shape is appropriate. Finite element simulations may be another way to get accurate results for new yield strength distribution. Also Vickers hardness number can be used for prediction of yield strengths by available conversion models. The aim of this study is to compare the results of all these methods. During the study two different materials (austenitic stainless steel and carbon steel) cold formed by drawing and extrusion are investigated. FE simulations have been conducted to predict product properties. For this purpose flow curves obtained from compression and tensile tests are used in FE-models based on elasto-plastic, isotropic hardening material. Results show that both materials are highly anisotropic and have much lower yield strength values than found in simulations. Similarly none of the models correlating Vickers hardness numbers and yield strengths are successful since they are designed for an isotropic hardening material. This study basically presents the deviation of a real material behavior from isotropic material behavior.

This thesis is devoted to the study of complex Fano varieties via the properties of subsheaves of the tangent bundle and the geometry of the fundamental divisor. The main results contained in this text are:(i) A generalization of Hartshorne's conjecture: a projective manifold is isomorphic to a projective space if and only if its tangent bundle contains an ample subsheaf.(ii) Stability of tangent bundles of Fano manifolds with Picard number one: by proving vanishing theorems on the irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type M, we establish that the tangent bundles of almost all general complete intersections in M are stable. Moreover, the same method also gives an answer to the problem of stability of the restriction of the tangent bundle of a complete intersection on a general hypersurface.(iii) Effective non-vanishing for Fano varieties and its applications: we study the positivity of the second Chern class of Fano manifolds with Picard number one, this permits us to prove a non-vanishing result for n-dimensional Fano manifolds with index n-3. As an application, we study the anticanonical geometry of Fano varieties and calculate the Seshadri constants of anticanonical divisors of Fano manifolds with large index.(iv) Fundamental divisors of smooth Moishezon threefolds with Picard number one: we prove the existence of a smooth divisor in the fundamental linear system in some special cases

The category of product is defined as a group of products that consumers perceive to be interrelated or substitutable or complementary. The attention of former retailers is focused on brand management, they think that attracting consumers will be the brand of packaging and sales practices. Now the retailer is optimized for the management of the category because the proper arrangement of the shelf space of the category is often more focused than the focus on the brand management is easy to close to the needs of consumers. Category management is a process for managing entire product categories as business units. Pricing and the shelf space allocation decision is an important problem for the retailer and has been studied for years. In our research, we focus on the restricted shelf space to study two common category management mechanisms: retailer category management (RCM) and category captainship (CC) in the non-symmetric market potential. We modify the demand function from the utility function in Singh and Vives (1984). This utility also provides the parameter γ to present complementarity of products. So our research including the complementary products, we compare the difference when switching RCM to CC. Maybe we can model multiple products in one or several categories.

In this research, we will model a non-symmetric cross-price sensitivity demand function derived from the utility function (Singh and Vives, 1984). And we use this non-symmetric demand function to re-investigating the relative management issues including the retailer category shelf space allocation, the optimal wholesale price set by manufacturers, and retail prices set by the retailer or Category captain in RCM and CC scenario. Finally, we proposed a numerical analysis to explain the different situations including the different opportunity cost of shelf space, different product cross-price sensitivity, different profit sharing of CC alliance, etc. And we will provide management implications for the retailer, category captain and non-captain manufacturer in different cases of RCM and CC. The utility function from Singh and Vives (1984) can explain the degree of substitution and complementarity between products, it can achieve the purpose of this research. Hence, we adopted the utility function of Singh and Vives (1984) to construct the complementary product demand function under the symmetric complementarity, and we study two complementary categories by using Category Captain management, named as “Complementary Category Captainship” (CCC). We will extend the CC mechanism from Kurtulus and Toktay (2011) to construct a CCC scenario.

The category is the types of goods or services that are considered to be substitutable or complementary in the market. Therefore, how to manage the category is an important issue. Traditionally, retailers usually focus on the management of the brand, thinking that the brand is the most important element to attract consumers. With the new product increase quickly, how to efficiently use the limited shelf space after the shelf space is gradually in short supply, it is be very concerned about. Then some scholars have proposed a category management called as category captainship (CC) which is focused on the category captain’s ability to set the price of goods in the distribution channel under the limited shelf space. Therefore, our research explores the effect of using traditional retail category management or CC under the limited shelf space on retailer and two manufacturers’ pricing decision and quantities of products, and then discuss the retailer, category captain and non-captain manufacturers should choose whether RCM or CC. In this study, we derived the non-symmetric demand function from the utility function in Singh and Vives (1984) and use the method of Kurtulus and Toktay (2011) to use indifference curves to explore retailer, category captain and non-captain manufacturers should choose which category management is more favorable.

For example, a square matrix over a field can be expressed as a product of two symmetric matrices; thus square matrices over real numbers can be factorized into two diagonalizable matrices. Factorizing matrices over complex num hers into Hermitian matrices is discussed. The chapter concludes with theorems that enable one to prescribe the eigenvalues of the factors of a square matrix, with some degree of freedom. Chapter 2 proves that a square matrix over arbitrary fields (with one exception) can be expressed as a product of two diagona lizab le matrices. The next two chapters consider decomposition of singular matrices into Idempotent matrices, and of nonsingutar matrices into Involutions. Chapter 5 studies factorization of a comp 1 ex matrix into Positive-( semi )definite matrices, emphasizing the least number of such factors required
