Résumé :
Metaphysical orthodoxy maintains that the relation of ontological dependence is irreflexive, asymmetric, and transitive. The goal of this paper is to challenge that orthodoxy by arguing that ontological dependence should be understood as non-symmetric, rather than asymmetric. A series of cases across a wide range of ontological commitments are presented, and it is argued that each case should be understood as one in which the relation of dependence holds symmetrically. If these arguments work, however, they provide reasons to be skeptical of the way in which contemporary discussions typically lump dependence together with relations such as grounding and in virtue of, which arguably need to be understood as asymmetric. If the asymmetry of dependence is relinquished, interesting things follow for what can be said about metaphysical explanation—particularly for the prospects of explanatory holism.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the causes of symmetric neurologic lesions in toxic and metabolic disease, trauma, neoplastic disease, vascular disease, and infectious disease. The importance of symmetry in diagnosis is emphasized. Symmetry can be a problem for the neurologist; especially on computed tomography (CT) scans, symmetric disease can be difficult to notice on the background of symmetric brain anatomy because the eye more quickly detects a one-sided lesion or multifocal asymmetric lesions than symmetric lesions. Symmetry of brain lesions is important to the clinician because it suggests a toxic, metabolic, or other chemically based cause. Diseases with symmetric pathology but unknown cause probably are chemically based; the clue of symmetry gives investigators an opportunity to pursue various avenues of research.

Résumé :
Frege and many thinkers inspired by him defend a symmetric conception of abstraction according to which the two sides of an acceptable abstraction principle provide different “recarvings” of one and the same content. Some defenses of the symmetric conception are criticized: first, a seductive argument based on a generalized notion of identity; then, an argument by Rayo based on the notion of a “just is”-statement. Instead, an asymmetric conception of abstraction is defended according to which the two sides of an acceptable abstraction principle are not on a par with respect to all worldly properties. For example, the parallelism of two lines grounds the existence of their shared direction, but not vice versa.

Résumé :
This paper argues for an alternative to orthodox foundationalist accounts of metaphysical structure as characterized by grounding relations. There are good reasons to take grounding to be a non-symmetric (rather than an asymmetric) relation, and to take facts to be related in complex networks of ground. These networks are closely analogous to the networks of justified beliefs characteristic of coherentism about justification. This position is called metaphysical interdependence. The chapter argues that grounding is an explanatory relation (rather than merely a relation which backs explanations), and that there are good reasons to resist the contention that explanation is asymmetric, including cases seemingly best described as cases of holistic metaphysical explanation. Metaphysical interdependence is a promising account of the metaphysical structure of reality.

Résumé :
Some claim that there is no causation to be found in the mature sciences, as Russell did in a famous and often quoted paper. Physics deals with equations, for example, which are symmetric rather than directed. Causal talk gets dismissed as primitive ‘folk’ science. However, it cannot be concluded that there is no asymmetric causation simply because a science does not represent it. We often will read an equation directionally as we know we can intervene on one variable to change another. This shows that scientific notions of experiment, intervention, and even observation presuppose the reality of causation. All three of these would be impossible if there were no causation.

Résumé :
Null subjects (NSs) have been a central research topic in generative syntax ever since the 1980s. This chapter considers the situation of German NSs both from a dialectological and from a diachronic perspective and attempts to reconstruct a direct line concerning the licensing conditions of pro-drop from Old High German (OHG) through Middle High German (MHG) and Early New High German (ENHG) to current dialects of New High German (NHG). Particularly, we will argue that German changed from a consistent, yet asymmetric pro-drop language to a partial, but symmetric one. In order to demonstrate that this development took place and the steps involved, we survey the existing empirical evidence and introduce new data.

Résumé :
What exactly is scientific explanation? ‘Explanation in science’ begins with Carl Hempel's covering law model of explanation, which says that to explain a phenomenon is to show that its occurrence follows deductively from a general law, perhaps supplemented by other laws and/or particular facts, all of which must be true. This model does not deal with symmetry or irrelevance. The covering law model implies that explanation should be a symmetric relation, but in fact it is asymmetric. Also, a good explanation of a phenomenon should contain information that is relevant to the phenomenon's occurrence. Causality-based accounts of scientific explanation and the concepts of reduction and multiple realization are also explained.

Résumé :
This chapter applies the theoretical framework of events to the study of non-core arguments. The applied argument in the symmetric applicative construction is introduced by a PP. This PP serves as the modifier of the event predicate, and its head, a null P, is incorporated into V. In an asymmetric applicative, including the ditransitive construction in English, two predicates are involved: in addition to the matrix verb, the other predicate is a PHAVEP. The derivation of this construction is therefore by nature identical to that of English resultatives. An implication of this chapter concerns the syntactic distinction between core arguments and non-core arguments. The core argument is merged in either [Spec EP] or [Spec FP], while the applied argument is introduced elsewhere providing its merge position is permitted by general syntactic constraints.

Résumé :
The term idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) encompasses a heterogeneous group of muscle-dominant systemic autoimmune syndromes, including polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM), sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM), and immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM). The reported incidence of IIM ranges from 5 to 10 × 10–6. Patients with PM, DM, and IMNM characteristically present with the insidious onset of symmetric proximal weakness, while in sIBM the weakness can be asymmetric, and involve the distal upper limbs and quadriceps. Dermatomyositis may also be accompanied by a range of cutaneous manifestations. Raised serum creatine kinase levels, the presence of characteristic myositis-specific antibodies, myopathic triad on electromyography, and myoedema on muscle magnetic resonance imaging are helpful in supporting a diagnosis of IIM. Muscle biopsy is the definitive diagnostic test and serves to distinguish subsets of disease, which each have characteristic histopathological changes reflecting underlying differences in pathogenesis. Mortality remains elevated in patients with IIM, despite the advent of immunosuppressive therapies.
