In the four years since the signing of the Nkomati accord in March 1984, Mozambique has undergone a quiet but far-reaching process of policy reform. Faced with a major crisis caused by the Renamo insurgency and by economic mismanagement, the Government has apparently abandoned its ambitious programme of socialist transformation through the creation of state farms and the launching of large projects, adopting instead a package of market-oriented economic reforms. Having joined the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in late 1984, Mozambique has been devaluing its currency, increasing the prices of agricultural produce, allowing peasants to sell commodities to private traders, and channelling some aid to the private sector, in keeping with the policies favoured by those organisations, The U.S. Agency for International Development, which has also become a donor since 1984, has likewise exerted pressure for policy reform, in particular for aid to the private commercial farms. While the socialist economic sector has not been dismantled, the Government is now stressing the importance of peasant and private agriculture, and the necessity of providing more support for both.1

The problem of ontology matching consists of finding the semantic correspondences between two ontologies that, although belonging to the same domain, have been developed separately. Ontology matching methods are of great importance today since they allow us to find the pivot points from which an automatic data integration process can be established. Unlike the most recent developments based on deep learning, this study presents our research efforts on the development of novel methods for ontology matching that are accurate and interpretable at the same time. For this purpose, we rely on a symbolic regression model (implemented via genetic programming) that has been specifically trained to find the mathematical expression that can solve the ground truth provided by experts accurately. Moreover, our approach offers the possibility of being understood by a human operator and helping the processor to consume as little energy as possible. The experimental evaluation results that we have achieved using several benchmark datasets seem to show that our approach could be promising.

In the paper, we present the development of symbolic interactionism (SI) in Poland by tracing and discussing its beginnings, as well as the influence the Chicago School had on the reception of SI in Polish sociology. Furthermore, we differentiate between two trends in the development of SI in Poland. One is connected with the early theoretical elaborations of the SI orientation and translations of classical books representing this perspective; another is linked with empirical work underpinned by SI concepts and the grounded theory approach in empirical research and data analysis. Stressing the importance of translations of classical texts of SI in its reception in Poland, we emphasize the role of field research and applications of SI concepts in sociological investigations that we shortly characterize.

This study is about symbolic processes in atypical populations, which is presumed to lead to a deeper understanding of the ontogenesis of normal symbolic development. Exactly, we aimed to explore the emergence of symbolic play in children with Down syndrome (DS) and in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A typically developing (TD) control group was also involved in the study. Fundamentally, we applied the qualitative method and focused on the replica play of the children that could be observed during their dyadic interaction with their parents. The activity of the individuals was recorded on video. The data were analysed with Noldus Observer XT 8.0 program software. The results confirmed atypical patterns of replica play in DS and ASD. Although both of these children groups demonstrated impairments in representational abilities, the autistic children seemed to have a basic cognitive defect. While children with DS were more often able to demonstrate coherent play activity, children with ASD could not use replica toys in the appropriate context verifying impairments in the social-communicative system. However, further studies are needed to cover the characterizations of psychopathological-specific disorders, to plan new diagnostic tools and more effective interventions.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Résumé :

This article describes studying method which developed the symbolic function mind. It is defined as a functional unit providing the solution of problems by understanding and expression of the reality of the subject-subject relationship using symbols. The symbol understood as a cultural form of presen- tation of subjective reality, mediating the relationship and interaction between two or more subjects. The symbol consists of sense-perception of form and meaning, expressing a subjective reality. The structure of the symbolic function includes the following components: generation and implementation plan, the transformation of symbolic forms, the awareness of the antinomic character, character interpretation. Investigation techiques was developed in accordance with the principles of construction of experimental-genetic method. Empirical criteria for evaluating the level of its development was based on the structure of the symbolic function, and developed a system of assistance for the realization of symbolic meaning. The method allows determine the dynamics and conditions for the development of the symbolic function, its genetic makeup, as well as the form and content of cooperation with con- temporaries.

Aruh religion is a system of ideas for Loksado people to work on the environment and give meaning to all activities in daily life. Religious knowledge is transformed from generation to generation through oral traditions which are considered sacred literature. A number of myths found in Aruh religious teachings underlie various religious actions such as in rice harvest rituals, rites of passage, healing rituals (babalian) and also social, economic and political actions in their daily lives. The development of a system of oral teachings among local people such as the Loksado people can be associated with the concept of symbolism in anthropology. Humans are symbolic creatures (animal symbolicum), that symbolic thinking and symbolic behavior are human characteristics . Various hopes, dreams, and thoughts that are sometimes difficult to accept by the human mind itself, manifested in various actions and symbolic works. Among the forms of symbolization carried out by humans are myths. As a symbolic expression, myths can almost be found in various cultural symptoms in all societies.

The presented scientific research is devoted to the analysis of factors of influence of symbols of political party on her development and political rhetoric. The emphasis is placed on studying of symbols and the political choice of voters. It is proved that the party symbolics can act as the communication medium between parties and her voter. The scientific facts according to which the political symbolics and party colors bear in themselves sense of a party course of heads of political parties are offered and also display understanding of a role of party in political life of society. Factors of development of political symbolics in Ukraine are offered. Detailed studying of foreign experience has shown that the party symbolics has the logical and symbolical nature. The first shows her historical roots and serves as the political bridge between ideals and values of generations. The second aspect, symbolical — is continuation of the first, but bears in itself nonverbal sense. The essence consists that the political party, enduring certain stages of social and political development of the state, tries to display them in the political symbols, the name, flowers. It becomes not only for mass influence on the choice of electorate and also with the purpose to become main using the force political capable to be on one wave with the voter. Also, in a research it is shown that in the Ukrainian political practice this aspect is given a certain attention, but in general — party heads use opposite symbols and their values.

Fire is usually detected with fire detection systems that are used to sense one or more products resulting from the fire such as smoke, heat, infrared, ultraviolet light radiation, or gas. Smoke detectors are mostly used in residential areas while fire alarm systems (heat, smoke, flame, and fire gas detectors) are used in commercial, industrial and municipal areas. However, in addition to smoke, heat, infrared, ultraviolet light radiation, or gas, other parameters could indicate a fire, such as air temperature, air pressure, and humidity, among others. Collecting these parameters requires the development of a sensor fusion system. However, with such a system, it is necessary to develop a simple system based on artificial intelligence (AI) that will be able to detect fire with high accuracy using the information collected from the sensor fusion system. The novelty of this paper is to show the procedure of how a simple AI system can be created in form of symbolic expression obtained with a genetic programming symbolic classifier (GPSC) algorithm and can be used as an additional tool to detect fire with high classification accuracy. Since the investigation is based on an initially imbalanced and publicly available dataset (high number of samples classified as 1-Fire Alarm and small number of samples 0-No Fire Alarm), the idea is to implement various balancing methods such as random undersampling/oversampling, Near Miss-1, ADASYN, SMOTE, and Borderline SMOTE. The obtained balanced datasets were used in GPSC with random hyperparameter search combined with 5-fold cross-validation to obtain symbolic expressions that could detect fire with high classification accuracy. For this investigation, the random hyperparameter search method and 5-fold cross-validation had to be developed. Each obtained symbolic expression was evaluated on train and test datasets to obtain mean and standard deviation values of accuracy (ACC), area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), precision, recall, and F1−score. Based on the conducted investigation, the highest classification metric values were achieved in the case of the dataset balanced with SMOTE method. The obtained values of ACC¯±SD(ACC), AUC¯±SD(ACU), Precision¯±SD(Precision), Recall¯±SD(Recall), and F1−score¯±SD(F1−score) are equal to 0.998±4.79×10−5, 0.998±4.79×10−5, 0.999±5.32×10−5, 0.998±4.26×10−5, and 0.998±4.796×10−5, respectively. The symbolic expression using which best values of classification metrics were achieved is shown, and the final evaluation was performed on the original dataset.

The analysis of symbolic dynamics applied to physiological time series retrieves dynamical properties of the underlying regulation which are robust against the symbolic transformation. In this study, three different transformations to produce a symbolic series were applied to fetal RR interval series to test whether they reflect individual changes of fetal heart rate variability in the course of pregnancy. Each transformation was applied to 215 heartbeat datasets obtained from 11 fetuses during the second and the third trimester of pregnancy (at least 10 datasets per fetus, median 17). In the symbolic series, the occurrence of symbolic sequences of length 3 was categorized according to the amount of variations in the sequence: no variation of the symbols, one variation, two variations. Linear regression with respect to gestational age showed that the individual course during pregnancy performed best using a binary transformation reflecting whether the RR interval differences are below or above a threshold. The median goodness of fit of the individual regression lines was 0.73 and also the variability among the individual slopes was low. Other transformations to symbolic dynamics performed worse but were still able to reflect the individual progress of fetal cardiovascular regulation.

In this paper, the publicly available dataset of condition based maintenance of combined diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG) propulsion system for ships has been utilized to obtain symbolic expressions which could estimate gas turbine shaft torque and fuel flow using genetic programming (GP) algorithm. The entire dataset consists of 11934 samples that was divided into training and testing portions of dataset in an 80:20 ratio. The training dataset used to train the GP algorithm to obtain symbolic expressions for gas turbine shaft torque and fuel flow estimation consisted of 9548 samples. The best symbolic expressions obtained for gas turbine shaft torque and fuel flow estimation were obtained based on their R2 score generated as a result of the application of the testing portion of the dataset on the aforementioned symbolic expressions. The testing portion of the dataset consisted of 2386 samples. The three best symbolic expressions obtained for gas turbine shaft torque estimation generated R2 scores of 0.999201, 0.999296, and 0.999374, respectively. The three best symbolic expressions obtained for fuel flow estimation generated R2 scores of 0.995495, 0.996465, and 0.996487, respectively.

One of characteristic in chemistry is its abstractness concept thus, the models or analogies to represent its microscopic and symbolic representation which not able seen by eyes are needed. Intermolecular forces lesson is one of chemistry concept that needs microscopic and symbolic representation. Modelling for microscopic and symbolic representation can be used to facilitate students for a better learning experience. Related to the problem background, the aim of this study is to know the validity of interactive multimedia using 3D modelling. The 3D intermolecular forces multimedia will contain intermolecular forces explanation be equipped with 3D illustration, animation, and text to describe microscopic and symbolic representation. This study used R&D method by Thiagarajan and the data gathering section conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Waru Sidoarjo. The instruments to assess the validities of multimedia are content validity sheet and construct validity sheet which assessed by 3 academics and practitioners. The validity average scores obtain 86,66% for content validity and 85,78% for construct validity which both categorize as “Very Valid”.

This study presents the analysis of an intervention, in which the play with social roles was used with the use of symbolic means for the development of symbolic function in a group of 18 preschool children from Bogot, Colombia. The experimental training method proposed by Vygotsky was used in the activity of play with social roles. The analysis is made before and after the participation of the group of children in the program designed to identify changes in the symbolic function at the levels: materialized, perceptive and verbal. An analysis of the role that is fulfilled, the rules and the use of symbolic means in the play is also made. It is concluded that the mediatization and the social situation of development that is generated in the play with the use of symbolic means make possible the development of the will, which is the most important feature of personality development.

Résumé :

We addressed the idea that a hybrid of symbolic and sub-symbolic representations is the best method to represent cognition for developmental robots. Basing the learning mechanisms of a cognitive developmental robot on principles of human-like learning, we developed an intelligent grasping robot architecture based on the hierarchical learning. The hybrid of different representations and memory in IGR also gave a new direction for developing robots with high intelligence.

Symbolic construction of the state identity is analysed, along with the symbolic politics of the state toward the past. The great systemic change is conceived as a symbolic transformation where the growth of semiotic behaviour is clearly noticeable.
