Résumé :
Inspired by the ideas from topological field theory it is possible to rewrite the supersymmetric charges of certain classes of extended supersymmetric Yang–Mills (SYM) theories in such a way that they are compatible with the discretization on a Euclidean space–time lattice. Such theories are known as maximally twisted SYM theories. In this review we discuss the construction and some applications of such classes of theories. The one-loop perturbative renormalization of the four-dimensional lattice [Formula: see text] SYM is discussed in particular. The lattice theories constructed using twisted approach play an important role in investigating the thermal phases of strongly coupled SYM theories and also the thermodynamic properties of their dual gravitational theories.

Résumé :
In the framework of four-dimensional heterotic superstring with free fermions, we investigate the rank 8 grand unified string theories (GUST’s) which contain the SU(3) H gauge family symmetry. GUST’s of this type accommodate naturally the three fermion families presently observed and, moreover, can describe the fermion mass spectrum without high-dimensional representations of conventional unification groups. We explicitly construct GUST’s with gauge symmetry G= SU(5) × U(1) ×[ SU(3) × U(1) ]H ⊂ SO (16) in free complex fermion formulation. As the GUST’s originating from Kac-Moody algebras (KMA’s) contain only low-dimensional representations, it is usually difficult to break the gauge symmetry. We solve this problem by taking for the observable gauge symmetry the diagonal subgroup G sym of the rank 16 group G×G ⊂ SO(16) × SO(16) ⊂ E(8)×E(8). Such a construction effectively corresponds to a level 2 KMA, and therefore some higher-dimensional representations of the diagonal subgroup appear. This (due to G×G tensor Higgs fields) allows one to break GUST symmetry down to SU (3c)× U(1) em . In this approach the observed electromagnetic charge Q em can be viewed as a sum of two Q I and Q II charges of each G group. In this case, below the scale where G×G breaks down to G sym the spectrum does not contain particles with exotic fractional charges.

Résumé :
Recent progress towards understanding a strong coupling expansion for various superconformal field theories in four dimensions is described. First, the case of the maximally supersymmetric Yang Mills theory is analyzed, as well as many calculations that can be done directly at strong coupling and matched to the AdS dual geometry. Also, this understanding is extended to other AdS duals where the sphere is replaced by a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. Particular emphasis is made on matching exactly part of the supergravity dual spectrum of various of these field theories by using wave function methods.

We study N = 1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on the lattice. The non-perturbative nature of supersymmetric field theories is still largely unknown. Similarly to QCD, SYM is confining and contains strongly bound states. Applying the variational method together with different smearing techniques we extract masses of the lightest bound states such as gluino-glue, glueball and mesonic states. As these states should form supermultiplets, this study allows to check whether SYM remains supersymmetric also on the quantum level.

Résumé :
Various recently developed connections between supersymmetric Yang–Mills theories in four dimensions and two-dimensional integrable systems serve as crucial ingredients in improving our understanding of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this review, we highlight some connections between superconformal four-dimensional Yang–Mills theory and various integrable systems. In particular, we focus on the role of Yangian symmetries in studying the gauge theory dual of closed string excitations. We also briefly review how the gauge theory connects to Calogero models and open quantum spin chains through the study of the gauge theory duals of D3 branes and open strings ending on them. This invited review is based on a seminar given at the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton.

We review and elaborate on properties of the string tension in two-dimensional gauge theories. The first model we consider is massive QED in the m≪e limit. We evaluate the leading string tension both in the fermionic and bosonized descriptions. We discuss the next-to-leading corrections in m/e. The next-to-leading terms in the long distance behavior of the quark–antiquark potential, are evaluated in a certain region of external versus dynamical charges. The finite temperature behavior is also determined. In QCD 2 we review the results for the string tension of quarks in cases with dynamical quarks in the fundamental, adjoint, symmetric and antisymmetric representations. The screening nature of SYM 2 is re-derived.

Résumé :
Supersymmetry is one of the possible scenarios for physics beyond the standard model. The building blocks of this scenario are supersymmetric gauge theories. In our work we study the N = 1 Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory with gauge group SU(2) dimensionally reduced to two-dimensional N = 2 SYM theory. In our lattice formulation we break supersymmetry and chiral symmetry explicitly while preserving R symmetry. By fine tuning the bar-mass of the fermions in the Lagrangian we construct a supersymmetric continuum theory. To this aim we carefully investigate mass spectra and Ward identities, which both show a clear signal of supersymmetry restoration in the continuum limit.

We study some aspects of open string theories on D-branes with critical electric fields. We show that the massless open string modes that move in the direction of the electric field decouple. In the 1+1 dimensional case the dual theory is U(N) SYM with electric flux, and the decoupling of massless open strings is dual to the decoupling of the U(1) degrees of freedom. We also show that, if the direction along the electric field is compact, then there are finite energy winding closed string modes. They are dual to Higgs branch excitations of the SYM theory, and their energetics works accordingly. These properties provide new non-trivial evidence for the duality.

We summarize calculation of one-loop beta functions in orbifolds of the [Formula: see text] SYM theory by a discrete subgroup Γ of the SU(4) R-symmetry, which are dual to string theory on AdS5 × S5/Γ, and the general strategy for determining whether there is a fixed line passing through the origin of the coupling constant space. We emphasize the importance of decoupling the U(1) factors. We describe a class of non-supersymmetric field theories corresponding to orbifolds acting freely on the S5 which preserve some of its global symmetries. In this class we do not find any large N non-supersymmetric theories with fixed lines passing through the origin. Connection of these results with closed string tachyon condensation in AdS5 × S5/Γ is discussed.

Applying Dirac first quantization to the extended twistorial form of the Brink-Schwarz (BS) superparticle, we get the linearized field equations of motion for all D = 4 extended supersymmetric (SUSY) theories, in their twistorial form. This form is equivalent to the usual superfield one. As an example, we will show this equivalence for N = 3 super-Yang-Mills (SYM). By gauging away all Minkowski superspace-time variables, we are left with a simple pure-twistor superparticle with the same physical content as the original one. We give the pure-twistor super-Poincare invariant actions from which the first quantized field equations for all the linearized SUSY theories can be derived.

In this paper, we consider the case where electrons, magnetic monopoles and dyons become massless. Here, we consider the [Formula: see text] supersymmetric Yang–Mills (SYM) theories with classical gauge groups with a rank r, SU(r+1), SO(2r), Sp(2r) and SO(2r+1) which are studied by Riemann surfaces called Seiberg–Witten curves. We discuss physical singularity associated with massless particles, which can be studied by geometric singularity of vanishing 1-cycles in Riemann surfaces in hyperelliptic form. We pay particular attention to the cases where mutually nonlocal states become massless (Argyres–Douglas theories), which corresponds to Riemann surfaces degenerating into cusps. We discuss nontrivial topology on the moduli space of the theory, which is reflected as monodromy associated to vanishing 1-cycles. We observe how dyon charges get changed as we move around and through singularity in moduli space.

Alday and Tachikawa [Lett. Math. Phys.94, 87 (2010)] observed that the Nekrasov partition function of [Formula: see text] superconformal gauge theories in the presence of fundamental surface operators can be associated to conformal blocks of a 2D CFT with affine sl(2) symmetry. This can be interpreted as the insertion of a fundamental surface operator changing the conformal symmetry from the Virasoro symmetry discovered in Ref. 2 to the affine Kac–Moody symmetry. A natural question arises as to how such a 2D CFT description can be extended to the case of non-fundamental surface operators. Motivated by this question, we review the results [Y. Hikida and V. Schomerus, JHEP0710, 064 (2007); S. Ribault, JHEP0805, 073 (2008)] and put them together to suggest a way to address the problem: It follows from this analysis that the expectation value of a non-fundamental surface operator in the SU(2) [Formula: see text] super Yang–Mills (YM) theory would be in correspondence with the expectation value of a single vertex operator in a two-dimensional CFT with reduced affine symmetry and whose central charge is parametrized by the integer number that labels the type of singularity of the surface operator.

Résumé :
First, we give a brief review of recent development of lattice formulations for supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories with extended supersymmetry, which preserves a part of supersymmetry on lattice. For cases of two dimensions, we can see that lattice models in such formulations lead to the target continuum theories with no fine-tuning. Namely, supersymmetries or some other symmetries not realized on the lattice are automatically restored in the continuum limit. Next, we consider a mass deformation to [Formula: see text] and present its lattice formulation with keeping two supercharges. It provides a nonperturbative framework to investigate IIA matrix string theory. Moreover, since it has fuzzy sphere solutions around which four-dimensional theory is deconstructed, it will serve a nonperturbative formulation of four-dimensional [Formula: see text] which requires no fine-tuning. The rank of the gauge group is not restricted to large N. It opens a quite interesting possibility to test AdS/CFT correspondence in a stringy regime where string loop effects cannot be neglected. Also, for two-dimensional [Formula: see text], a similar argument is possible to obtain four-dimensional [Formula: see text] on noncommutative space.

Résumé :
In this paper, a general property of field theories with Majorana–Weyl spinors (such as ten-dimensional SYM theories, superstrings, five-branes, etc.) is presented. It is shown that these theories, in a given dimension, admit different formulations in the allowed space–times signatures which are all interconnected by transformations which close the S3 permutation group (S3 duality). Explicit formulas to "translate" a theory from a given signature into another signature, are given. They are conveniently chosen to realize the S3 group. The above construction applies for any dimension d which admit Majorana–Weyl spinors in more than one signature, that is for d ≥ 8. We prove that the S3 duality (valid for any even d ≥ 8) is in consequence of the famous triality property of the 8 dimensions, together with (for d > 8) the mod 8 property of Clifford Γ matrices.

In the case of lattice gauge theories the loop equation is a well defined equation for a discrete set of quantities and can be easily solved at strong coupling either numerically or by series expansion. At weak coupling, however, we argue that the equations are not well defined unless a certain set of positivity constraints is imposed. Using semi-definite programming we show numerically that, for a pure Yang Mills theory in two, three and four dimensions, these constraints lead to good results for the mean value of the energy at weak coupling. Further, the positivity constraints imply the existence of a positive definite matrix whose entries are expectation values of Wilson loops. This matrix allows us to define a certain entropy associated with theWilson loops. We compute this entropy numerically and describe some of its properties. Finally we discuss some preliminary ideas for extending the results to supersymmetric N = 4 SYM.

Résumé :
Yang–Mills theories in four space–time dimensions possess a hidden symmetry which does not exhibit itself as a symmetry of classical Lagrangians but is only revealed on the quantum level. It turns out that the effective Yang–Mills dynamics in several important limits is described by completely integrable systems that prove to be related to the celebrated Heisenberg spin chain and its generalizations. In this review we explain the general phenomenon of complete integrability and its realization in several different situations. As a prime example, we consider in some detail the scale dependence of composite (Wilson) operators in QCD and super-Yang–Mills (SYM) theories. High-energy (Regge) behavior of scattering amplitudes in QCD is also discussed and provides one with another realization of the same phenomenon that differs, however, from the first example in essential details. As the third example, we address the low-energy effective action in a [Formula: see text] SYM theory which, contrary to the previous two cases, corresponds to a classical integrable model. Finally, we include a short overview of recent attempts to use gauge/string duality in order to relate integrability of Yang–Mills dynamics with the hidden symmetry of a string theory on a curved background.

Résumé :
In holography, there is a one-to-one correspondence between physical observables in the bulk and boundary theories. To define physical observables, however, regularization needs to be implemented in both sides of the correspondence. It is arguable whether the correspondence should extend to regularization and renormalization scheme which are not physical in the conventional sense. However, if we are to take the renormalization group (RG) interpretation of holography seriously, its precise understanding appears to require the matching of regularizations and renormalization schemes in the bulk and boundary theories. We address this question in the AdS5/CFT4 correspondence by considering the simplest physical quantity, the Casimir energy of the [Formula: see text] super Yang–Mills (SYM) theory on [Formula: see text], in a [Formula: see text]-function regularization and show that there are choices of scheme which match the bulk AdS result, including the radial cutoff-dependent corrections when the cutoff is kept finite. We further discuss the implication of this result to the RG interpretation of holography.

Résumé :
In this review we present the calculation of the splitting rate in flat space of a macroscopic fundamental string either intersecting at a generic angle a Dp-brane or lying on it. The result is then applied, in the context of the string/gauge theory correspondence, to the study of exclusive decay rates of large spin mesons into mesons. As examples, we discuss the cases of [Formula: see text] SYM with a small number of flavors, and of QCD-like theories in the quenched approximation. In the latter context, explicit analytic formulas are given for decay rates of mesons formed either by heavy quarks or by massless quarks.

Résumé :
In the framework of the four-dimensional heterotic superstring with free fermions, we investigate the rank 8 grand unified string theories (GUST’s) which contain the SU (3)H gauge family symmetry, and develop some methods for building corresponding string models. We explicitly construct GUST’s with gauge symmetry G= SU (5)× U (1) × [ SU (3)× U (1)]H and G= SO (10)×[ SU (3)× U (1)]H ⊂ SO (16) or E(6)× SU (3)H ⊂ E(8), and consider the full massless spectrum for our string models. As the GUST’s originating from level 1 Kac–Moody algebra (KMA) contain only low-dimensional representations, we consider for the observable gauge symmetry the diagonal subgroup G sym of the rank 16 group G×G ⊂ SO (16)× SO (16) or ⊂ E(8)×E(8). We discuss the possible fermion matter and Higgs sectors in these theories. There has to exist “superweak” light chiral matter [Formula: see text] in the GUST’s under consideration. The understanding of quark and lepton mass spectra and family mixing leaves a possibility for the existence of an unusually low mass breaking scale of the SU (3)H family gauge symmetry (some TeV).

Résumé :
[Formula: see text] Type IIb supergravity compactifications on five-dimensional Einstein manifolds [Formula: see text] realize holographic duals to four-dimensional conformal field theories. Black holes in such geometries are dual to thermal states in these CFTs. When black holes become sufficiently small in (global) [Formula: see text], they are expected to suffer Gregory–Laflamme instability with respect to localization on [Formula: see text]. Previously, the instability was demonstrated for gravitational dual of [Formula: see text] SYM, where [Formula: see text]. We extend stability analysis to arbitrary [Formula: see text]. We point out that the quasinormal mode equation governing the instabilities is universal. The precise onset of the instability is [Formula: see text]-sensitive, as it is governed by the lowest nonvanishing eigenvalue [Formula: see text] of its Laplacian.

Résumé :
This talk begins with some history and basic facts about string theory and its connections with strong interactions. Comparisons of stacks of Dirichlet branes with curved backgrounds produced by them are used to motivate the AdS/CFT correspondence between superconformal gauge theory and string theory on a product of Anti-de Sitter space and a compact manifold. The ensuing duality between semi-classical spinning strings and long gauge theory operators is briefly reviewed. Strongly coupled thermal SYM theory is explored via a black hole in 5-dimensional AdS space, which leads to explicit results for its entropy and shear viscosity. A conjectured universal lower bound on the viscosity to entropy density ratio, and its possible relation to recent results from RHIC, are discussed. Finally, some available results on string duals of confining gauge theories are briefly reviewed.

Résumé :
We present Star–Triangle Relations (STRs), a Mathematica® package designed to solve Feynman diagrams by means of the method of uniqueness in any Euclidean space-time dimension. The method of uniqueness is a powerful technique to solve multi-loop Feynman integrals in theories with conformal symmetry imposing some relations between the powers of propagators and the space-time dimension. In our algorithm, we include both identities for scalar and Yukawa type integrals. The package provides a graphical environment in which it is possible to draw the desired diagram with the mouse input and a set of tools to modify and compute it. Throughout the use of a graphic interface, the package should be easily accessible to users with little or no previous experience on diagrams computation. This manual includes some pedagogical examples of computation of Feynman graphs as the scalar two-loop kite master integral and a fermionic diagram appearing in the computation of the spectrum of the [Formula: see text]-deformed [Formula: see text] SYM in the double scaling limit.

Résumé :
AbstractSupersymmetry plays prominent roles in the study of quantum field theory and in many proposals for potential new physics beyond the standard model. Lattice field theory provides a non-perturbative regularization suitable for strongly interacting systems. This invited review briefly summarizes significant recent progress in lattice investigations of supersymmetric field theories, as well as some of the challenges that remain to be overcome. I focus on progress in three areas: supersymmetric Yang–Mills (SYM) theories in fewer than four space-time dimensions, as well as both minimal $${\mathcal {N}} = 1$$ N = 1 SYM and maximal $${\mathcal {N}} = 4$$ N = 4 SYM in four dimensions. I also highlight superQCD and sign problems as prominent challenges that will be important to address in future work.

Résumé :
Abstract 4d$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 super Yang-Mills (SYM) with simply connected gauge group G has h gapped vacua arising from the spontaneously broken discrete R-symmetry, where h is the dual Coxeter number of G. Therefore, the theory admits stable domain walls interpolating between any two vacua, but it is a nonperturbative problem to determine the low energy theory on the domain wall. We put forward an explicit answer to this question for all the domain walls for G = SU(N), Sp(N), Spin(N) and G2, and for the minimal domain wall connecting neighboring vacua for arbitrary G. We propose that the domain wall theories support specific nontrivial topological quantum field theories (TQFTs), which include the Chern-Simons theory proposed long ago by Acharya-Vafa for SU(N). We provide nontrivial evidence for our proposals by exactly matching renormalization group invariant partition functions twisted by global symmetries of SYM computed in the ultraviolet with those computed in our proposed infrared TQFTs. A crucial element in this matching is constructing the Hilbert space of spin TQFTs, that is, theories that depend on the spin structure of spacetime and admit fermionic states — a subject we delve into in some detail.
