Résumé :
Heterogeneous catalytic systems based on the use of stimuli-responsive materials can be switched from an “on” active state to an “off” inactive state, which contributes to endowing the catalysts with unique functional properties, such as adaptability, recyclability and precise spatial and temporal control on different types of chemical reactions. All these properties constitute a step toward the development of nature-inspired catalytic systems. Even if this is a niche area in the field of catalysis, it is possible to find in literature intriguing examples of dynamic catalysts, whose systematic analysis and review are still lacking. The aim of this work is to examine the recent developments of stimuli-responsive heterogeneous catalytic systems from the viewpoint of different approaches that have been proposed to obtain a dynamic control of catalytic efficiency. Because of the variety of reactions and conditions, it is difficult to make a quantitative comparison between the efficiencies of the considered systems, but the analysis of the different strategies can inspire the preparation of new smart catalytic systems.

Résumé :
The purpose of this work is to study the possibilities of improving the quality of the processes of controlling the movement of the vessel along the course by combining individual standard controllers. Of the known scientific directions devoted to the problem being solved, the closest is the theory of systems with variable structure, in which, due to switching, a unique useful property is achieved, which are not possessed by individual switched structures. The article is devoted to the approach to the construction of the ship course control system, which is based on the principle of switching regulators during the transient process. This makes it possible to improve the quality of control processes in the system by using the features of individual regulators, in particular, the application of the switching principle made it possible to significantly increase the speed of the system in comparison with systems without switching and ensure the desired monotonic nature of the control process. The proposed approach is illustrated based on switchable P-controllers. The results of modeling the developed ship course control system are presented and discussed.

Résumé :
Abstract The ever-increasing global energy demand and the issues caused by population growth and unsustainable energy resource usages have several environmental and economic impacts. The on-demand capability of dynamic wall systems with switchable insulation systems can contribute toward energy efficiency and reduced electric cost using “building-as-a-battery.” In this paper, the performance of an exterior envelope system that employs a switchable insulation system is investigated. A COMSOL simulation was used to study the envelope performance under three switchable insulation locations in the wall system. The on and off switching cycle included insulating or conducting the exterior, interior, or both sides of the mass wall system. To validate the simulation work, an experimental test was conducted in climate chamber on a 4 × 8 in. wall system with identical wall components used in the COMSOL simulation. Results show a good agreement between the experiment and simulation results. The wall system with switchable insulation placed on the exterior side provided the highest interior inward heat flux when compared with the interior or split insulation. Also, an exterior switchable insulation system in addition to a thermal mass maintained a positive heat flow for more hours when the outdoor temperature was lower than the interior temperature.

In this paper, a switchable bandstop to allpass filter using cascaded transmission line SIW resonators is proposed. The switchable filter is performed by the switchable cascaded transmission line SIW resonators using discrete PIN diodes. Therefore, it can be used for rejecting any unwanted frequencies in the communication systems. The proposed filter design is operated in K-band and targeted for millimeter wave front end system for 5G telecommunication. Two filter designs with different orientation (design A and B) are investigated for the best performance and compact size. As a result, design B is the best by giving a maximum attenuation of 39.5 dB at 26.4 GHz with the layout size of 33×30 mm.

Résumé :
Reconfigurable chiral metasurfaces with a dynamic polarization manipulation capability are highly required in optical integrated systems. In this paper, we simultaneously realized giant and large-range switchable asymmetric transmission (AT) and circular conversion dichroism (CCD) in a vanadium dioxide (VO2) based metasurface. The AT and CCD of the insulator VO2 based metasurface reached 0.95 and 0.92, respectively. Utilizing the insulator-to-metallic phase transition of VO2, the AT and CCD could be continuously switched to near zero. Furthermore, the physics mechanism of the giant and switchable AT and CCD were analyzed. The proposed metasurface with large-range switchable AT and CCD is promising in applications of biochemistry detection, chiral imaging, and biosensing.

Résumé :
This paper evaluates the potential energy use and peak demand savings associated with optimal controls of switchable transparent insulation systems (STIS) applied to smart windows for US residential buildings. The optimal controls are developed based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) to identify the automatic settings of the dynamic shades. First, switchable insulation systems and their operation mechanisms are briefly described when combined with smart windows. Then, the GA-based optimization approach is outlined to operate switchable insulation systems applied to windows for a prototypical US residential building. The optimized controls are implemented to reduce heating and cooling energy end-uses for a house located four US locations, during three representative days of swing, summer, and winter seasons. The performance of optimal controller is compared to that obtained using simplified rule-based control sets to operate the dynamic insulation systems. The analysis results indicate that optimized controls of STISs can save up to 81.8% in daily thermal loads compared to the simplified rule-set especially when dwellings are located in hot climates such as that of Phoenix, AZ. Moreover, optimally controlled STISs can reduce electrical peak demand by up to 49.8% compared to the simplified rule-set, indicating significant energy efficiency and demand response potentials of the SIS technology when applied to US residential buildings.

Résumé :
Light can be used to regulate protein interactions with a high degree of spatial and temporal precision. Photo-switchable systems therefore allow the development of controllable protein complexes that can influence various cellular and molecular processes. Here, we describe a plant virus-based nanoparticle shuttle for the distribution of proteins that can be released when exposed to light. Potato virus X (PVX) is often used as a presentation system for heterologous proteins and epitopes, and has ideal properties for biomedical applications such as good tissue penetration and the ability to form hydrogels that present signaling molecules and promote cell adhesion. In this study, we describe three different systems attached to the surface of PVX particles: LOVTRAP, BphP1/QPAS1 and Dronpa145N. We demonstrated the functionality of all three photo-switchable protein complexes in vitro and the successful loading and unloading of PVX particles. The new systems provide the basis for promising applications in the biomedical and biomaterial sciences.

Résumé :
Integration of materials acts as a bridge between the electronic and biological worlds, which has revolutionized the development of bioelectronic devices. This review highlights the rapidly emerging field of switchable interface and its bioelectronics applications. This review article highlights the role and importance of two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially graphene, in the field of bioelectronics. Because of the excellent electrical, optical, and mechanical properties graphene have promising application in the field of bioelectronics. The easy integration, biocompatibility, mechanical flexibility, and conformity add impact in its use for the fabrication of bioelectronic devices. In addition, the switchable behavior of this material adds an impact on the study of natural biochemical processes. In general, the behavior of the interfacial materials can be tuned with modest changes in the bioelectronics interface systems. It is also believed that switchable behavior of materials responds to a major change at the nanoscale level by regulating the behavior of the stimuli-responsive interface architecture.

Résumé :
In this paper, a switchable antenna with capability to operate in ultrawideband (UWB) frequency from 3 to 10.7 GHz with two switchable notch bands of 3.3–3.7 and 3.7–4.2 GHz, is presented for cognitive radio (CR) and multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) applications. The proposed antenna has a simple structure and compact size of 17 × 24 mm2. The antenna in the UWB characteristics is obtained using a circular radiator patch with an embedded T-slot on the patch and a rectangular parasitic element that is attached to the patch. The reconfigurability is also achieved by two L-shaped parasitic elements placed in the left and right of the patch that two ideal switches is inserted over the these elements and the circular patch. The function of the antenna can be changed by tuning status of the switches that make the notch bands in application frequencies. The measurement and simulation results show that the antenna has good characteristics for CR application and MB-OFDM, where the UWB antenna is required for spectrum sensing and the switchable band rejection antenna is used for reconfigurable operation.

Résumé :
A low-profile (0.21 λ g × 0.35 λ g × 0.02 λ g ) and a simply-structured frequency-switchable antenna with eight frequency choices is presented in this paper. The radiating structure (monopole) is printed on a 1.6-mm thicker, commercially-available substrate of FR-4 ( ϵ r = 4.4, tan δ = 0.020). Specifically, it uses three PIN diodes in the designated places to shift the resonant bands of the antenna. The antenna operates at four different modes depending on the ON and OFF states of the PIN diodes. While in each mode, the antenna covers two unique frequencies (Mode 1 = 1.8 and 3.29 GHz, Mode 2 = 2.23 and 3.9 GHz, Mode 3 = 2.4 and 4.55 GHz, and Mode 4 = 2.78 and 5.54 GHz). The performance results show that the proposed antenna scheme explores significant gain (>1.5 dBi in all modes) and reasonable efficiency (>82% in all modes) for each mode. Using a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS), the switchable antenna is designed and optimized. The fabricated model along with the PIN diode and biasing network is tested experimentally to validate the simulation results. The proposed antenna may also be combined in compact and heterogeneous radio frequency (RF) front-ends because of its small geometry and efficient utilization of the frequency spectrum.

Résumé :
This paper evaluates the potential energy savings when switchable insulation systems (SIS) are applied to walls of residential buildings located in Belgium and other locations in Europe. The study considers two low-energy prototypical dwellings (an apartment and a detached house) that are representative of post-2010 constructions and renovations in Belgium. Using an 3R2C-based analysis tool, the performance of both dwellings is evaluated with static and dynamic wall insulation systems. First, the switchable insulating system is described along with its associated simple 2-step rule-based control strategy. Then the modeling strategy and simulation analysis tools are presented. In Belgium, it was found that SIS-integrated walls allow energy savings up to 3.7% for space heating and up to 98% for cooling. Moreover, it was found that to further reduce the energy consumption of SIS-integrated buildings in various European climates, thermal mass placement needs to be considered. By optimizing the placement and the parameters of the various wall layers, it is possible to increase the space heating savings by up to a factor of 4 and those of cooling by up to a factor of 2.5.

Résumé :
We demonstrate a physical model of photoalignment and photopatterning based on rotational diffusion in solid azo-dye nanolayers. We also highlight the new applications of photoalignment and photopatterning in display and photonics such as: (i) liquid crystal (LC) E-paper devices, including optically rewritable LC E-paper on flexible substrates as 3D E-paper, as well as optically rewritable technology for photonics devices; (ii) photonics LC devices, such as LC Switches, polarization controllers and polarization rotators, variable optical attenuators, LC filled photonic crystal fiber, switchable diffraction grating; (iii) patterned micro-polarizer array using photo-alignment technology for image sensor; (iv) electrically tunable liquid crystal q-plates; (v) electrically switchable liquid crystal Fresnel lens; (vi) liquid crystal optical elements with integrated Pancharatnam-Berry phases. We are sure, that in the field of (LC), the main point is no longer display research, but new photonic applications of LC are emerging in telecommunication, fiber optical communication systems, sensors, switchable lenses, LC light converters and other LC photonics devices.

Résumé :
The engineering of switchable or activatable dCas9 proteins would benefit from a single system for both positive and negative selection of dCas9 activity. Most systems that are used to interrogate dCas9 libraries use a fluorescent protein screen or an antibiotic selection for active dCas9 variants. To avoid some of the limitations of these systems, we have developed a single system capable of selecting for either active or inactive dCas9 variants. E. coli expressing active dCas9 variants are isolated in the positive selection system through growth in the presence of ampicillin. The negative selection can isolate cells lacking dCas9 activity through two separate mechanisms: growth in M9 minimal media or growth in media containing streptomycin. This system is capable of enriching for rare dCas9 variants up to 9,000-fold and possesses potential utility in directed evolution experiments to create switchable dCas9 proteins.
