Résumé :
The number of Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus leaving Sweden on autumn migration was estimated by a capture-recapture technique. A large number of Reed Warblers are ringed annually, mainly in July–September. During the same period, shortly after ringing, these birds leave Sweden on autumn migration directed south-west. One sample is recaptured at the south-western corner of Sweden, at Falsterbo Bird Observatory, and the capture-recapture technique can be used to estimate the size of the total population. The result of the calculation for the total number of Reed Warblers leaving Sweden each autumn was 3.3 million (95 % confidence interval ±0.86 million). The corresponding number for the juvenile birds was 1.8 million (±0.63 million). Due to a low rate of recaptures of ringed adult birds at Falsterbo, the calculated total number may be too high, whereas the number achieved for juvenile birds was judged to be more correct. Detailed analyses of available data support that about 1.8 million juvenile birds leave Sweden on autumn migration. Among them, 5.7 % are assumed to be of Finnish origin and 1 % are assumed to come from other areas outside Sweden. On the basis of available data on survival, breeding success, pair density and reed areas, the mean annual breeding population of Reed Warblers in Sweden, 1988–1993, was estimated to be about 500,000 to 600,000 pairs, which is a larger population than previously assumed.

Résumé :
Background: Thunderstorm asthma is a term used to describe surges in acute respiratory illnesses following a thunderstorm and is often attributed to an intense exposure to aeroallergens. Several episodes of thunderstorm asthma have been observed worldwide; however, no such cases have been described in Sweden. In Sweden, the most prominent exposure to air-borne pollen occurs during the blooming of the birch. We aimed to explore the associations between respiratory health and the combined exposure to thunderstorms and birch pollen. Methods: We investigated the association between the daily numbers of outpatient visits due to respiratory cases and the combined exposure to thunderstorms and birch pollen during the period of 1 May–31 September in 2001–2017, in Stockholm County, Sweden, by using time series analysis with log linear models. Results: We detected noticeable increases in the number of outpatient visits on both the same day (max 26%; 95% CI 1.16–1.37) and the day after (max 50%; 95% CI 1.32–1.70) the occurrence of a thunderstorm, when the concentrations of birch pollen and the number of lightning discharges were within the highest categories. Conclusions: It is possible that co-exposure to heavy thunderstorms and high concentrations of birch pollen affects the respiratory health of the Stockholm population. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study addressing the thunderstorm-related respiratory illnesses in Sweden and the effects of birch pollen. Our study may be important for future public health advice related to thunderstorm asthma.

Résumé :
The absolute uterine factor infertility is a non-treatable cause of female infertility. Surrogacy has become the only option that allows this group of patients to achieve genetic, although biological motherhood. According to statistics there are more than 30 thousand women of fertile age in Russia who cannot get pregnant due to the absolute uterine factor infertility. The recently emerged possibility of uterine transplantation has become the only treatment for this kind of female infertility.Prior to the very first clinical study of human uterine transplantation which was carried out in 2013 in Sweden, scientists had conducted systematic studies in animals (rodents, pigs, cattle and primates). The first clinical trial with the uterine transplantation performed resulted in a live birth in September 2014. Currently, cases of successful uterine transplantation in humans have been reported in Sweden, Brazil, USA and Italy. Experience and practice in animal research played a key role in the success of the first clinical study on uterine transplantation. The application of this method is fundamental in the introduction of the scientifically grounded technology of uterine transplantation in Russia.Aim. Analysis of the problems of the clinical application of the uterine transplantation based on a literature review.

Résumé :
Abstract Intraspecific kleptoparasitism was studied in flock-fishing Great Crested Grebes Podiceps cristatus during May and June 2011 and in Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo during September 2011 and August 2012 at Lake Krankesjön, South Sweden, for a total of c.11 h for grebes and c.6 h for cormorants. Only attempts to steal large fish (relative to a bird’s gape) were recorded, because small fish mostly did not elicit kleptoparasitic attempts and those seen appeared never to be successful. Attempts to steal large fish were rare, 0.14 h-1 grebe-1 (N = 96) and 0.39 h-1 cormorant-1 (N = 163). In both species, the host lost its fish in about 20% of cases. Based on the observed low parasitism and success rates, it is concluded that kleptoparasitism was a minor cost of participating in flock-fishing

The contribution analyzes accusations related to Greta Thunberg’s speech in the UN on September 2019, posted on public Facebook pages in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The accusations we analyze are of three types: 1. Accusations that amplify and mirror Thunberg’s accusations, 2. Accusations against Thunberg, her followers, and supporters, and 3. Accusations against people who are bullying Thunberg and her followers online. None of the accusations is the first move in an apologetic discourse. We argue that the rhetorical functions of accusations that are not met with an apology have two important characteristics: 1. they attribute responsibility to the accused by expressing a reactive attitude towards his or her action, 2. they express a judgement that the action is blameworthy. We use these perspectives to analyze the accusations related to Thunberg’s speech on the public Facebook pages and characterize the rhetorical functions of the three types of accusations

Résumé :
The seasonal patterns of growth and nutrient uptake of a short-rotation Salixviminalis L. plantation located along the southeastern coast of Sweden were investigated during 1981. One-year-old shoots of clone 683 yielded 9.6 t dry weight ha−1 of stems and 4.2 t dry weight ha−1 of leaves; whereas the same cultural treatment during the 2nd year after coppicing yielded 13.3 and 8.2 t dry weight ha−1, respectively. Maximums in foliage dry weight occurred between early August and early September in the older shoots (6.3 t ha−1) and in late September in the younger shoots (3.5 t ha−1). Foliage and stem growth early in the season were markedly higher in the 2-year-old shoots than in the 1-year-old shoots. N uptake increased rapidly shortly after the first fertilizer application in all three investigated plots. Aboveground N uptake ranged from 140 to 191 kg ha−1 year−1. From the onset of liquid fertilization until the end of the growing season the aboveground N uptake ranged from 92 to 98 kg N ha−1; the total N fertilization during this period was 120 kg N ha−1. Nitrogen productivity varied between clones and was higher for 2- than for 1-year-old shoots. Greater relative amounts of biomass and N were allocated to leaves on the 2-year-old shoots. The amount of N allocated to stems for producing 11 of stem biomass decreased from 4.3 to 2.5 kg during the 2nd year after coppicing.

Résumé :
Abstract Between 3 June 1982 and 8 July 1985, a stake net consisting of up to 32 stakes covering the greater part of Storglaciären was surveyed 70 times, yielding roughly 2000 separate determinations of vertical and horizontal velocity. The time interval between surveys averaged about 1 week during the summer and 2 months during the winter. Horizontal velocities were normally highest during periods of high daily temperature or heavy rain early in the melt season. Comparable or sometimes higher temperatures or rainfalls later in the season usually had less effect, though minor velocity peaks were often present in August and early September. During periods for which bore-hole water-level measurements are available, velocity peaks generally coincided with periods of high basal water pressure, but not all periods of high water pressure resulted in velocity peaks. Despite increasing basal water pressures, velocity decreased gradually during the winter. Vertical velocities also vary seasonally. Beneath the upper part of the ablation area the glacier bed is overdeepened. Vertical velocities here are ˜3 mm/d higher during the summer. Down-glacier from the overdeepening, vertical velocities are ˜1 mm/d lower during the summer. These and other characteristics of the vertical velocity pattern are best explained by appealing to: (1) a decrease in strain-rate with depth, and (2) seasonal variations in this depth-dependence. Five periods of high velocity lasting from 3 to 11d were studied in detail. In an area where the bed is overdeepened, force-balance calculations suggest that basal drag decreased between 16 and 40% during these high-velocity events. This resulted in a decrease in compressive strain-rate at the up-glacier end of the overdeepening, an increase at the down-glacier end, and a slight increase in lateral shear strain-rates. Down-glacier from the overdeepening, basal drag increased during two events owing to an increased push from up-glacier and pull from down-glacier. Lateral shear strain-rates increased sharply here.

Résumé :
With a significant impact on turbomachinery blade performance, surface curvature distribution becomes one of the essential factors in the design of high-efficiency blades. This study focuses on applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to evaluate turbine rotor blade performance. The main aim is to analyze the influence of incidence and geometry shape on the performance of a gas-turbine blade in two dimensions. To achieve this, an investigation was conducted to identify a suitable turbulence model for this case, with two turbulence models combined with two different solvers explored in ANSYS Fluent: Realizable k-ε model in pressure and density based solver; k-ω shear stress transport (SST) model in pressure and density based solver. The blade total pressure loss across different blade exit Mach numbers is the comparison factor, with validation against experimental data. Subsequently, the chosen pressure-based k-ω SST model mode is used to study the performance of various air inflow incidence angles and compare two different blade geometries. In this paper, two geometries, Geometry 1 and Geometry 2, were designed by setting two different exit blade angles, β2=79.5° and β2=70° respectively, while the inlet blade angles have the same value, β1=48.8°. Furthermore, the effect of varying air inflow incidence angles between -48.8° and 10° on the blade performance distribution is also investigated. Within the studied range, the inflow incidence angle of 10° is found to have the best performance in terms of turbine work output. On the other hand, the blade performance of Geometry 2 appears superior to Geometry 1.

Résumé :
The reforming of light hydrocarbons to produce synthesis gas, H2 and CO, is an important intermediate for manufacturing valuable basic chemicals and synthesis fuels. In order to understand these reforming processes better, elementary step reaction mechanisms are developed. In the available literature, the surface reaction mechanisms are usually achieved with the help of reaction kinetic parameters without using the thermochemistry of the species referred to kinetic models due to the unavailability of the thermochemistry of the intermediate species involved in the multi-step reaction mechanism. In this work, investigations are made to obtain the thermochemistry of the intermediate species to establish thermodynamic equilibrium in order to develop thermodynamic model for steam reforming of methane over nickel. The thermochemistry of the surface bound species is taken from different sources available in the literature and after that a detailed sensitivity analysis is performed to match the results with experiments. The simulation set up is adapted from the literature experiments given in [1]. The results produced with the one-dimensional tool using the thermodynamic model developed in the present investigation consisting of 21 reversible reactions are compared with the kinetic scheme with 42 irreversible reactions from reference simulation along with their experimental results. Both the models show some major differences in the reaction pathways which provides a useful insight into the key rate determining steps and needs further investigations.

Résumé :
The harsh operating environment in a wastewater treatment process (WWTP) makes sensor faults commonplace. Detecting these faults can be challenging due to the complex process dynamics, unknown inputs, and general noise in the process and measurements. Comparing sensor readings against predictions from a physics-based or data-driven model of the WWTP is a common strategy for detecting such faults. In this work sensor measurements are directly modelled using Gaussian process (GP) regression, a data-driven multivariate approach. These GP sensor models are, with a generalised product of experts, combined into a dedicated fault isolation scheme resembling traditional observer bank methods. The residuals are monitored with a multivariate exponentially weighted moving average chart which is used for fault detection and isolation. The method is evaluated using simulated data generated with the Benchmark Simulation Model No. 1 WWTP. Fault detection performance is reported using several standard metrics such as false alarms, missed detections, time to detection, and successful fault isolations, with emphasis on reporting across a wide range of sensors and faults to provide a point of comparison for future studies. The proposed approach performs well across these metrics. Given sufficient data representative of normal operation, this approach can easily be adapted across a wide variety of plant configurations and can be used to create operatorfriendly diagnostics resembling classical control charts.

Résumé :
Wastewater treatment sector uses about 1 percent of total energy consumption in European Union, hence development of energy-efficient digital technologies is an urgent challenge. The aim of this article is to develop energy-efficient control strategies for biogas production from sewage sludge at water resource recovery facilities (WRRF). The case study is developed in collaboration Veas WRRF, Norway. The Veas biogas plant is operated semi-continuously in mesophilic conditions. The process includes inlet sludge pumps, four anaerobic digesters, heat exchangers for sludge heating, pumps for sludge recirculation and a compressor for gas recirculation. The process has two controlled variables, biogas flowrate and digester temperature, the main disturbance is the inlet substrate composition. The manipulated variables are flowrates of the inlet sludge, heating medium, and sludge recirculation. The real semicontinuous operation approximated as continuous operation with two hour moving averaging. Transfer functions were identified from the pre-processed data. The accuracy of the models was sufficient 14−60%. The transfer functions were used to design control strategies with PID-controllers and model predictive controller (MPC). The results show that both control strategies can increase biogas production and decrease variability in controlled and manipulated variables compared to the plant operation. MPC gave the best results, increasing biogas production up to 10 % and decreasing variability in controlled variables by 50−80% and by 92−99% in manipulated variables. These results indicate that implementation of advanced control technologies can improve the energy efficiency of biogas production.

Résumé :
This paper deals with the modeling and identification of the Quanser Aero. The Quanser Aero is an aerospace laboratory setup designed for teaching aerospace concepts. Two propellers generate thrust and allow the user to control its dynamic response. The ability to lock axes individually makes it capable of abstracting a variety of aerospace systems, such as half-quadrotor, 1-Degree of freedom (DOF), vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), and 2-DOF helicopter. This paper focuses on the latter of these modes. In this configuration, the Quanser Aero can produce different pitch and yaw angles based on the angular velocity of the propellers, which produces an interesting identification and control problem, due to the presence of nonlinearities and significant cross-couplings between different variables. In this paper, a nonlinear model derived from Newton’s law and Euler’s rotational dynamics is obtained, and the unknown model parameters are identified through an experimental approach, with the model validated through real-time testing. In particular, it is shown that by means of a more detailed description of the friction, which includes the Karnopp’s model that keeps the sum of the magnitude of all forces equal to zero until the applied forces are strong enough to overcome the friction force, and of the centripetal forces acting on the Aero, significant improvements are obtained when compared to state-of-the-art models. These improvements may hold the potential to enhance the performance of advanced nonlinear model-based control algorithms for this device.

Résumé :
In Europe, the prices of natural gas and electricity reached an all-time high in 2022. A way to mitigate high electricity costs is to expand district heating systems in urban areas, this will reduce electric load as well as increase the power generation possibilities in combined heat and power plants. District heating has been the dominant heat supply technology in urban areas in Sweden since the 1980s. However, as the energy efficiency in buildings increase, district heating distribution losses must be reduced to ensure a cost-efficient heat supply. This has led to the idea of the 4th generation district heating which is characterized by low distribution temperatures. In this study, low-temperature district heating distribution in a planned future city district is simulated using a Python-based tool. Two different low-temperature distribution systems are investigated: 1) 2-pipe low-temperature system, and 2) a cascading 3-pipe low-temperature system. The focus is on simulating the distribution losses, temperature drop, and mass flow in the pipe network. The scope of the analysis also includes an investigation of the effect of lower return temperatures on the central district heating network. The results indicate that the low-temperature distribution system with the 2-pipe system performs better than the cascading system when considering distribution losses and temperature drop. The mass flow depends on the temperature demand in the heating systems in the buildings and is considerably high for both low-temperature distribution systems investigated.

Résumé :
District heating system often consists of a long, complex network of piping carrying heat from a power plant to the consumers. The supply temperature from the plant is either controlled by the operator from experience or a predefined curve based on the outdoor temperature. An optimized supply temperature which would be lower than the one obtained traditionally would lead to lower heat loss and reduced peak load on the power plant. In this paper, we investigate the machine learning models for heat load forecasting which is a crucial parameter in the optimizing process. Models are generated using supervised machine learning algorithms: Linear models (Linear Regression, Ridge and Gaussian Process Regressor), Random Forest Regressor, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN). Data-driven models are used extensively in the literature to predict heat load prediction based on the weather and the time effect on a fixed training set, however, in this study, we model the heat load in the network in real-time scenarios i.e., adaptive training and forecasting. The model is adaptively updated as well as the training of the machine learning model in real time. It provides a “plug-and-play” solution for real-time prediction without significant pre-tuning requirements. The results of all the models are compared with various time horizons i.e., 6 hrs, 10 hrs, 24 hrs and 1 week, using the district heating data obtained for the city of Vasteras in Sweden. The performance of the prediction algorithms is evaluated using Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE). An algorithm with the best accuracy is selected based on the performance comparison. Also, models suitable for short-term and long-term forecasting are discussed towards the end of the article

Résumé :
Nowadays, lots of opportunities are offered to students to fly their own experiment on board of rockets or balloons. Thanks to those opportunities, young scientists have a chance to experience hands-on project and even to find a vocation: pursuing experimentations on-board of flight missions. However, it can appear, for these young professionals, that flying on board sounding rockets or stratospheric balloons is hard to access or to afford. Yet the opportunities exist and are waiting for them! Space educational programmes enable students to learn, in a short period of time, all phases of a scientific project; a unique chance to experience a full project cycle from objectives’ definition to the publication of the results. Thus, students define mission requirements, design, manufacture, test and finally launch their own experiment! On REXUS/BEXUS [1] for example, students experience an end-to-end project with all disciplines required by a Space project (science, mechanics, electronics, software, system engineering, management, finances, outreach). The concretisation of all efforts occurs during the launch campaign, organised at SSC Esrange (Sweden). The campaign is always an intense period for the participants: high level of concentration, pressure, stress but a massive work that pays off during the flight and after. Usually, this key event enables ideas and improvements to pop up; a prolific event to define the next step of an experiment, maybe on a future mission! Many students start their professional career after the campaign. Despite new ideas and the drive to pursue, a common idea of these young professionals is that it is hard to access to flight opportunities on sounding rockets or stratospheric balloons while not being a student anymore: too expensive to finance a campaign? too complex to organise? who to contact? Many questions that it is time to answer. Yes, it is possible! At SSC, we enable access to stratospheric balloons, sounding rockets and drop tests on a cost-efficient entrance level or fully funded through national and international programmes. One of these examples is the EOSTRE mission [2] (Experiment on Outliving Microorganisms under Stratospheric Environment), developed by FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences (Germany) in collaboration with the University of Oulu (Finland); a former BEXUS team that developed its own balloon mission, launched successfully from Esrange in March 2020. Several former students from REXUS/BEXUS have joined professional opportunities, such as the HEMERA [3] programme, with the experiments GRASS from INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) and STRAINS (Sapienza University, Rome) and launched it from Esrange in September 2021. Today, SSC is also offering ride share opportunities on sounding rockets with the programme SubOrbital Express [4]; first successful launch was in June 2019 on board MASER 14 (S1X-1). Opportunities are still open for the next missions in fall 2022 (S1X-3) and in 2023 (S1X-4)
