Texte intégralCities and societies have undergone major changes over the last several centuries, leaving certain communities lagging behind and without hope of a better future. I argue that universities need to take a more active role in not only understanding the problems that are faced by disadvantaged communities, but by becoming agents of change instead of taking a passive role to research. We need to understand the processes of change, how to facilitate community development that is beneficial to the communities that have been left discouraged and forgotten. Universities can actively promote this style of action-research and learning, acting as powerful community and social infrastructure while also providing a unique experience to the students involved. For my case studies I assumed the role of a participant observer with Tesserae Urban Social Research, an independent research organisation focused on urban policy located in Berlin, and Mapping San Siro, an action-research group affiliated with the Politecnico of Milan, located within the city. I stayed with both groups for several months to understand their diverse approaches, roles in the respective context and relationships with different actors at the local and city level, carrying out interviews with the three different level of actors in the case of Mapping San Siro. Using Margaret Archer’s theory of social change and Morphogenetic Approach, I carry out an analysis from Mapping San Siro’s inception to present day, examining how their role in the neighbourhood has adapted over three distinct periods, and how they brought together the local groups and associations to form the Sansheroes network. I conclude that Mapping San Siro’s unique position as an actor within the network and a public institution has allowed them to act as an intermediary between the city and the local associations, bringing the needs of the neighbourhood into the public eye. I also highlight my beneficial situating experience with the two groups, how carrying out research within a disadvantaged neighbourhood and the daily situations has contributed to my development and demonstrated that researchers do not need to take an objective, passive approach in their research.

Texte intégralThe thesis is aimed at examining the phenomenon of community investments in developing countries by multinationals. After studying existing literature on CSR and its application in developing countries by MNC, the research has been split in two parts. The first past, explorative, has been done through a survey sent in the first 6 months of 2009 to 100 companies, randomly extracted from the Fortune Global 500 at 31/12/2008. The purpose of the survey was to start understanding the phenomenon of CSR activities done by MNC to communities in developing countries. Once surveys have been collected, the second part of the research has been based on the selection and analysis of 5 cases with the technique of multiple case study analysis. For those 5 companies the work has been done with the analysis of lots of primary source, integrated with data coming from other sources. AT the end data have been interpreted defining a model by which read strategies realized by companies to communities in developing countries.

Texte intégralIn order to meet the latest educational challenges they are confronted with, teachers in lower and upper secondary schools need exposure to continuous training experiences, aimed at acquiring the educational planning skills required to set up learning paths which can inspire and actively involve students. This is all the more necessary in lack of clearly established, consistent training curricula for access to tenure, especially for an educational scope such as teaching Spanish language and cultures, which has witnessed a significant increase in demand for skilled teachers in the past few years. To this regard, professional practice communities provide a suitable tool to encourage interaction, support and collaborative exchange strategies, which may be useful to enhance and supplement individual learning experience with unprompted casual contributions. However, in order to be effective and thus represent a long-lasting role model for their members, professional practice communities should be constantly stimulated. The key research question this study is based on arises from this very premise – can a professional practice community be driven and inspired by e-learning projects leading to a shared educational plan as a final activity? Aiming at responding to this research question as well other ancillary research topics this experimental study, conducted within the scope of a Digital Humanities PhD programme sponsored by the University of Genoa and relying on the methodological and implementation support of the Institute for Educational Technologies of the Genoa National Research Council (ITD-CNR), intends to describe the set-up process and the experiential effects of a multi-platform environment consisting of two engagement spaces – an online course and a theme portal, both focusing on the main ludic teaching methods (gamification, game-based learning, serious games and game-making). These educational approaches are still relatively new to Italian teachers, but they may help trigger virtuous motivation circles, including through the use of a broad range of available applications and digital tools.
ORTECA, MARIA KATIA.
Texte intégralThis work would try to test the correlation between innovation in firms and social capital, measured by classic indicators (like political participation, leisure and activities) and more corporate indicators (like agreements and collaborations). The analysis is carried out for Italy and UK and we use the Community Innovation Survey 4, the European survey on innovation and R&D in the firms, for the data on innovation and corporate social capital. We use the Multipurpose Survey 2000 for Italy and the Index of Deprivation for England like measures of classic social capital. We further try a comparison of the results between the two countries for the analysis on corporate social capital. This comparison is finally referred to more general issues like the two different productive and economic systems.
CONTINI, VALERIO. « Concezioni della sostenibilità e orientamenti temporali in contesti educativi informali.
Texte intégralThe deep changes in today society point out new educational phenomena. Informal learning takes place spontaneously in people biography and living environment. Many studies show that informal education, more than formal one, can deeply and durably affect attitudes and lifestyles, can educate large masses of people, especially the most difficult to reach, to undertake to build a sustainable planetary community. This study investigates the Gruppi di Acquisto Solidale as informal educational experiences important for promoting a sustainable future. It examines and discuss the concepts of sustainability, the future time orientation and the informal educational dynamics in some Italian GAS. The first part of the work focuses on the complexity and fuzzyness of the concept of sustainability and some key dimensions of sustainable education. The conceptual categories identified have been used in field work to collect, analyze and interpret the empirical material. The second part presents the criteria, methodology, tools, activities (questionnaires, semi-structured individual interviews, participant observation, document analysis) undertaken during the field work. The third part presents the field work conducted on a sample of 148 subjects from four different GAS. The first and the second chapter expose the structure of the sample, the characteristics and mode of administration, the processing, analysis and discussion of the results of two questionnaires used in the field work: the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) and the open questionnaire on the concepts of sustainability (specifically worked out for this research). The third presents the core of the field study. By means of document analysis, participant observation and semi-structured interviews carried out with some key informants the concepts of sustainability, the time orientation to future and the educational dynamics in the four social contexts under study are identified and analyzed. In the final chapter we discuss some critical aspects that came out from the fieldwork, and we assume some clues for further research in the future.
