van der Hoeven, Frank, et Alexander Wandl. Hotterdam : How space is making Rotterdam warmer, how this affects the health of its inhabitants, and what can be done about it. TU Delft Open, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.47982/bookrxiv.1.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Heat waves will occur in Rotterdam with greater frequency in the future. Those affected most will be the elderly – a group that is growing in size. In the light of the Paris heat wave of August 2003 and the one in Rotterdam in July 2006, mortality rates among the elderly in particular are likely to rise in the summer. METHOD The aim of the Hotterdam research project was to gain a better understanding of urban heat. The heat was measured and the surface energy balance modelled from that perspective. Social and physical features of the city we identified in detail with the help of satellite images, GIS and 3D models. We determined the links between urban heat/surface energy balance and the social/physical features of Rotterdam by multivariable regression analysis. The crucial elements of the heat problem were then clustered and illustrated on a social and a physical heat map. RESULTS The research project produced two heat maps, an atlas of underlying data and a set of adaptation measures which, when combined, will make the city of Rotterdam and its inhabitants more aware and less vulnerable to heat wave-related health effects. CONCLUSION In different ways, the pre-war districts of the city (North, South, and West) are warmer and more vulnerable to urban heat than are other areas of Rotterdam. The temperature readings that we carried out confirm these findings as far as outdoor temperatures are concerned. Indoor temperatures vary widely. Homes seem to have their particular dynamics, in which the house’s age plays a role. The above-average mortality of those aged 75 and over during the July 2006 heat wave in Rotterdam can be explained by a) the concentration of people in this age group, b) the age of the homes they live in, and c) the sum of sensible heat and ground heat flux. A diverse mix of impervious surfaces, surface water, foliage, building envelopes and shade make one area or district warmer than another. Adaptation measures are in the hands of residents, homeowners and the local council alike, and relate to changing behaviour, physical measures for homes, and urban design respectively.

Résumé :
External supersonic gas flow in which changes in the fluid and flow properties are brought about by direction change is analysed in this chapter. In addition, it is shown that flow over a corner between two flat surfaces resulted in an oblique shockwave if the angle between the two surfaces is less than 180° (a concave corner). The analysis of flow through an oblique shockwave is based upon the superposition of the flowfield for a normal shock onto a uniform flow parallel to the shock. It is also shown that both weak and strong oblique shocks can occur. For an angle in excess of 180° (a convex corner), the flow is turned through an isentropic Prandtl-Meyer expansion fan. Analysis of a Prandtl-Meyer expansion fan starts from consideration of an infinitesimal flow deflection through a Mach wave.

Résumé :
This article discusses the modulation design of plasmonics for diagnosis and drug screening applications. It begins with an overview of the advances made in terms of theoretical insights, focusing on the origins of surface plasmon wave and manipulation, admittance loci design method, and surface plasmon grating coupled emission. It then considers how prism coupler, Ge-doped silica waveguide, nanograting and active plasmonics can trigger the excitation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). It also examines the metallic effect of long-range surface plasmon resonance and conducting metal oxide as adhesive layer before describing three SPR waveguide biosensors that were developed for the realization of a hand-held SPR system. In particular, it presents a lateral-flow microfluidic channel based on a nitrocellulose membrane and integrated with a SPR waveguide biosensor to achieve dynamic detection. Finally, the article evaluates the biomolecular layer effect, with emphasis on kinetics analysis of antibody binding.

Résumé :
Chapter 1 discusses the flows that can be described in the framework of Prandtl’s 1904 classical boundary-layer theory, including the Blasius boundary layer on a flat plate and the Falkner–Skan solutions for the boundary layer on a wedge surface. It presents Schlichting’s solution for the laminar jet and Tollmien’s solution for the viscous wake. These are followed by analysis of Chapman’s shear layer performed with the help of Prandtl’s transposition theorem. It also considers the boundary layer on the surface of a fast rotating cylinder with the purpose of linking the circulation around the cylinder with the speed of its rotation. It concludes discussion of the classical boundary-layer theory with analysis of compressible boundary layers, including the interactive boundary layers in hypersonic flows.

Résumé :
In this chapter, the Hamilton–Jacobi formulation is discussed in two parts: from a generating function perspective and as a variational principle. The Poincaré–Cartan 1-form is derived and solutions to the Hamilton–Jacobi equations are discussed. The canonical action is examined in a fashion similar to that used for analysis in previous chapters. The Hamilton–Jacobi equation is then shown to parallel the eikonal equation of wave mechanics. The chapter discusses Hamilton’s principal function, the time-independent Hamilton–Jacobi equation, Hamilton’s characteristic function, the rectification theorem, the Maupertius action principle and the Hamilton–Jacobi variational problem. The chapter also discusses integral surfaces, complete integral hypersurfaces, completely separable solutions, the Arnold–Liouville integrability theorem, general integrals, the Cauchy problem and de Broglie–Bohm mechanics. In addition, an interdisciplinary example of medical imaging is detailed.

Résumé :
Vortex solutions in cyclo-geostrophic equilibrium are described and their geostrophic and ageostrophic barotropic and baroclinic instabilities are studied along the lines of Chapter 10. Special attention is paid to centrifugal instability which, as the inertial instability of jets, is due to modes trapped in the anticyclonic shear in the vortex, and has asymmetric counterparts. Saturation of this instability is shown to exhibit some specific patterns. Instabilities of intense hurricane-like vortices are analysed and shown to be sensitive to fine details of the vortex profile. Nonlinear saturation of such instabilities exhibits typical secondary meso-vortex structures, and leads to intensification of the vortex. Special attention is paid to instabilities in laboratory flows in rotating cylindrical channels. Classification of these instabilities is given, and their nature, in terms of resonances between different wave modes, is established. Rigid-lid and free-surface configuration with topography are considered and compared with experiments.

Résumé :
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night analyses the eponymous film within three theoretical coordinates: vampire cinema, psychoanalytic (film) theory and German Idealism. The book situates the film in the history of the vampire genre through the spectral vampire in early German expressionist cinema (Murnau’s Nosferatu, 1922) and theorizes it as part of a transnational movement in Iranian films that represents ‘the uncanny’ between the two modes of ‘the weird and the eerie,’ theorized by Mark Fisher. The film is situated in relation to the history of Iranian horror films, as well as the female vampire’s evocation of the figure of the Nightmare in Iranian myth-folklore, and the cinematic vampire’s relation to Islamicate occult sciences. The book provides an intervention in second-wave psychoanalytic film theory (Joan Copjec, Slavoj Žižek) through a Lacanian reading of the film that analyzes the female vampire as ‘the return of the repressed’ of feminine sexuality, and as the Lacanian (traumatic) Real in female sexuality for the Shi’ite clerical order in Iran. The romantic love story at the heart of the film is theorized through ideas of central figures in German Idealism, such as Hegel and Schelling. The book establishes a relation between the female vampire and the spectral vampire by linking German Idealism and its deployment of metaphors such as phantasmagoria in early magic lantern projections. The book’s central theoretical intervention is an enactment of Freudo-Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and Hegelian dialectics that brings out what is hidden on the surface of the film’s textual unconscious.
