There is continued confusion and controversy about the importance of perception versus actual exchange of social support, that I argue in this paper leads erroneously to the conclusion that it is perception that is key. This paper argues that this confusion follows from the lack of study of the time sequence by which social support, and therefore its perception, is accumulated. Unless people are delusional, social support and its appraisal are created primarily as a product of real events in their lives. Most research comparing “perceived” and “received” social support actually compares perceptions of reality that have accumulated over long spans of time to a micro exchange of received support. Further, I illustrate that when social support does not behave as people expected (i.e., there are misperceptions) then people's belief systems about their support change, but, again, based on the facts. In this way, people are depicted as active operators in the support process, such that they make ongoing adjustments in their beliefs and in their actual social support by creating new relationships and how they interact in these relationships so that perceptions and reality match.

This study examines the associations among financial hardship, perception of situation, social support, and perceived stress using data from the second wave of the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States. Both financial hardship and perception of situation were hypothesized to be positively associated with perceived stress, whereas social support was hypothesized to act as an intervening variable between perception of situation and perceived stress. The results from a structural equation model showed that (a) financial hardship was a precursor of perception of situation, (b) perception of situation exhibited a positive effect on perceived stress, and (c) social support was negatively related to the level of perceived stress.

Résumé :
This thesis is devoted to the study of psychological factors associated with cardiovascular diseases. It is made up by five theoretical chapters and four empirical studies. The first chapter presents a brief description of the different cardiovascular diseases that are still the main cause of death and disability in Western countries. The second chapter is focused on the role of psychology with respect to the different cardiovascular diseases. It ranges from the psychosomatic approach, branch of medicine interested in organic disorders without an anatomic lesion or functional problems, to the most recent area of psychocardiology. The third chapter is on the Type A Behavior Pattern, on the variables of hostility and anger, and on type D personality. It deals with a description of these factors, an evaluation of the methods mostly used for their assessment, and the main empirical findings relative to the association with cardiovascular disease; the hypothesized physiological mechanisms behind these relationships have been also addressed. The fourth chapter is devoted to depression and anxiety as crucial variables which can predict cardiovascular diseases and a worse prognosis in already present diseases; methods and instruments of their evaluation are also presented, together with the main findings on their association with cardiovascular disease and associated physiological and behavioral mechanisms. The fifth chapter is focused on the psychological factors that exert a protective against cardiovascular diseases, namely self-efficacy beliefs, representation of illness, and perceived social support; also for these variables evaluation methods and main findings from the literature are presented. The first study compared the psychological profile of a group of patients with cardiovascular disease with a “healthy” group, not affected by cardiovascular diseases. Similarly to previous research, our results showed significant differences in some dimensions of Type A Behavior Pattern, as well as in anxiety and depression. The second study compared the psychological profiles of patients with different cardiovascular diseases, differentiating between acute and chronic diagnosis. Results showed important differences between the two groups in some of the dimensions of Type A behavior pattern, in social withdrawal, anxiety, depression, subjective wellbeing, perceived social support, perception of illness, and self-efficacy beliefs in managing the disease. The third study investigated, with a cross-sectional research design, the role of the representations of illness and self-efficacy beliefs in the impact exerted by the severity of illness on health satisfaction, depression and life satisfaction of patients with cardiovascular diseases. Self-efficacy beliefs and representation of illness were found to be valid mediators of the relationship between the objective indicator of illness severity and the different indicators of patient’s well-being. The fourth study was aimed at investigating longitudinally, through a two-monthsstudy, the role of illness representations, self-efficacy beliefs, and perceived social support in mediating the impact of illness severity on depression. In line with previous research, our results confirmed the relevant role of the three protective factors.

Résumé :
Social support has a great impact on injured NCAA athletes' complete psychological and physical recovery. When individuals, such as the coach, athletic trainer, teammates, and family, incorporate social support in the recovery process the injured athlete's attitude and belief system is positively influenced. The coach and athletic trainer have been specifically researched and proven to be influential in certain types of social support, but the family has not been significantly studied in the past. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the six different types of social support given by the family in comparison to the social support given by the head coach, athletic trainer, and teammates to the injured NCAA Dl athlete regarding the athlete's satisfaction level of each type of support provided, as well as how each support contributed to the athlete's recovery. An additional purpose is to examine the quality of the six different types of social support given by the family. This study was carried out by a quantitative survey (Modified Form of the Social Support Survey) in which NCAA athletes from a private, Dl institution who met specific criteria were the subjects. The results were analyzed through inferential statistics using multiple one-way ANOV As. The results showed according to the athlete, the family and athletic trainer provided the highest levels of all six types of social support compared to the coach and teammates. The coach was the least influential in the social support network according to the athlete. In conclusion, the family provides an integral role within all types of social support. The family should be included in the rehabilitation process of the athlete for a healthy psychological and physical recovery of the injured NCAA athlete.

Abstract: Adolescence is the transition period from childhood to adulthood, marked by physical, hormonal, psychological and cognitive changes, in which the individual presents a need for social interaction and development of identity. At this stage the teenager distances himself socially from parents and siblings and approaches peers, from whom he gets help to deal with worries and stress due to the need for career choice, college preparation and love life. Such stressful conditions can generate psychological disorders in adolescents if they do not have strategies to manage them. It is in the family environment that adolescents form most of their repertoire of social skills that are behavioral capacities in social interactions, taking into account the expression of the individual in a way that does not hurt their own rights or those of other people. As the first learning environment, the family is considered as a source of support and a model, which act as protective factors for the development of psychological disorders. The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of stress, social skills and perception of social and family support and the relationships among themselves, in 240 adolescents of high school students, in the age group of 14 to 18 years, of public and private schools. To that end, a sociodemographic questionnaire, Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESA), Social Skills Inventory for Adolescents (IHSA), Social Support Perception Scale (EPSUS-A) and Family Support Per...

This qualitative and quantitative study focused on exploring hospice patient’s perceptions of family support. Family support was conceptualized as which family member they expect to receive support from, types of support provided, frequency of support, family communication about medical illness, and type of support that is perceived to be most helpful. Fifteen partcipants between the ages of 70 to 98 were interviewed using purposive sampling. Findings showed that although participants found both physical and emotional support helpful, more than half reported perceiving emotional support as the most helpful. Recommendations for social work practice and research were discussed.

Résumé :
The concept of organizational health had its origin in the organizational effectiveness definition, which was originated in the Fifties. Conceived as an expanded effectiveness , the concept of organizational health, recent in literature, is still in need of studies, which allow its definite implantation in the scope of organizational behavior, and mainly, studies that clarify its nature, antecedents and consequences. In the attempt of fulfilling part of this agenda, this study had as objective testing an explanatory model, which foresaw the perceptions of organizational and social support in the work, as being the antecedent to the perception of organizational health. The participants of this study were in its total 160 workers of several companies from the Triângulo Mineiro: 59,1% of participants from feminine gender and 40,9% from masculine gender, both with an average age of 28,9 years old and postgraduation as the most frequent degree of education. The instrument of data collection was composed by a questionnaire containing the three scales that were used to measure the perceptions of two factors of organizational health, three factors of social support in the work and the perception of organizational support. To achieve the proposed objective multivariate analyses have been carried through. The results of this study reveal that the main variable for both the factors of organizational health perception was the perception of organizational support. The impact of the perception of social support in the work was smaller than compared to that one. Implications of this study, as academic as applied, have been discussed and an investigation agenda was suggested.

This study focuses on one of the growing types of violence that exists in schools: the bullying. If we consider the school as a privileged space for socialization, education and transmission of knowledge, values and culture, it is important to study this phenomenon, in this specific context. Given that the incidence of this type of behavior in schools happens during the period of adolescence, where interpersonal relationships take great importance at this stage of development, it became important to discover the associations between parental support and social support by peers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to: discover the existence of a relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and involvement in bullying behaviors, and to analyze the associations between bullying behaviors and parental and social support by peers. To evaluate the involvement in bullying behaviors we used School Victimization and Aggression Scale (EVAE) (Cunha, s/d, adapted from Saúde, 2011), and to evaluate the perception of parental support and social support by peers, we used the Perceived Social Support - Family Scale (PSS-Fa) (Castro Silva, Morgado & Maroco, 2012) and the Perceived Social Support - Friend Scale (PSS-Fr) (Castro Silva, Morgado & Maroco, 2012), respectively. This study was composed by a sample of 120 students from both genders, attending Portuguese middle schools, in the city of Lisbon. The results showed significant associations between bullying behaviors, the aggressive ones, with parental support, as well as significant associations between bullying behaviors, aggressive and victimization ones, with social support by peers.

ABSTRACT: Recent studies have mentioned the existence of a relationship between bullying and the support adolescents receive from their families. A family environment perceived as being poorly affectionate or too strict may increase the likelihood of engaging in aggressive behaviours. Regarding the risk factors inherent in the environment, we can identify the following: interaction with deviant classmates and friends and peer rejection. The main goal of this study is the analysis of the relationship between young people’s perception of social support and the different types of aggressive behaviours. 286 students from Escola Secundária Emídio Navarro participated in this study, their ages averaging 16 years (M = 15,60). The participants filled a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Self-Assessment Scale of Aggression (Little, T. D., Jones, S. M., Henrich, C. C., & Hawley, P. H., 2003, experimental version by Gouveia, Leal, Cardoso, Sangalhos & Nunes,2013), the Scale of Perceived Social Support from Family (PSS-Fa, Procidano & Heller, 1983; experimental version by Gouveia, Leal, Cardoso, Sangalhos & Nunes, 2013), the Scale of Perceived Social Support from Friends (PSS-Am, Kopperman, 2007; experimental version by Gouveia, Leal, Cardoso, Sangalhos & Nunes, 2013). In our results we found a weak association between the onset and maintenance of aggressive behaviours and the perception of social support. Nonetheless, friendships during this stage in life, the direct and the relational forms of aggression are negatively associated.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter will detail how the advent of the internet and smartphones has fundamentally transformed the nature of social support and its effects on quality of life and health. Technological change has altered: (1) The ways in which we assess social support, (2) The perception and effects of social support. First, we will examine how recent technological innovations have allowed for more detailed, objective, and accurate assessments of social support. Digital technology has enabled us to go beyond simple self-report measures to assess social support and quality of life in unprecedented ways. By leveraging big data across several accessible technological platforms, researchers can begin to understand how social support processes unfold in real time and the myriad ways technology can be used to measure meaningful aspects of social support. In the second section, we will discuss how the concept of social support has changed in the age of digital communication. We will focus on how the presence and use of technological devices influences face-to-face interactions, online groups, and family dynamics. Taken together, this chapter will recognize the changes in social assessment afforded by technology and consider several important areas in which technological tools have transformed social support.

AbstractThe 2018 uprising of “Gilets jaunes” in France gave prominence to the question of whether to fund the energy transition or lift up the buying power of populations. This topical concern raises older and yet unsolved questions, which are how much does cost the energy transition and who should bear the bill. The chapter explores emerging issues in the challenge of transition to energy sustainability in communities and focuses on citizens’ perception of the social dimension of energy, besides the economic and environmental dimensions. The study findings from a survey conducted in Dakar show that citizens’ opinions on energy are shared between necessity—for living—and concern about its pollution. Our findings support the design of a localized communication strategy to support the energy agenda for transition to sustainability.

Résumé :
AbstractOne of the factors that will affect the livability of cities and the overall citizens’ quality of life in the future is certainly climate change. Urban areas will play a fundamental role in the commitment against climate change and will have to develop appropriate adaptation actions, in accordance with the European Strategy against climate change, including the planning and implementation of Green Infrastructures (GIs). They produce various environmental and social benefits in the urban context. Various studies have shown that citizenship involvement at all levels is necessary for the evaluation of the sharing of the proposed projects. The research proposes an innovative methodological model to support administrations in the strategic planning choice of GIs according to a shared and circular approach. To perform a multi-layer assessment, the multi-criteria evaluation will be combined with the circular evaluation model called Green City Circle. The evaluation is set up as a circular process, followed by a first investigative phase, followed by a proactive phase of solutions and an implementation phase up to a final stage of evaluation of the results and strategies for long-term sustainability. The study was carried out in the city of Catania to test a planning and management tool for GIs envisaged by the administration as win–win climate adaptation measures.

Abstract The case of three generations of Wushan migrants in Zhaoqing provides interesting grounds for discussing place identity, its evolution and dynamics, and multiple place identities and their interactions. In spite of living together as families in a close community, these three generations exhibit entirely different place identity characteristics and behaviours. Many phenomena can be simply interpreted using social identity theory, social comparison theory, or identity formation theory. However, some interesting facts, such as that how one identifies self does not only rely on self perception, but also social pressure and engagement, are worth further investigation based on migration, mobility, and general environmental psychology research. Specifically, this case study provides rich implications on regional (tourism) development and the VFR visitor economy. For one, local authorities should aim at fully understanding generational differences in perceiving selves and places, and then form respective valid policies to support community development. Further, destinations aiming to attract revisits by people who have proactively or passively relocated themselves should notice the potential dynamics in this target segment and develop tourism and hospitality facilities to cater to the various tastes caused by these generational differences.

Résumé :
AbstractThe study of traditional marine stakeholders, such as small-scale fishers in the Mediterranean, represents a site of a changing seascape. This is characterized by impeding factors of the past but also a possibility for improved future trajectories. Small-scale fisheries (SSF) have played a crucial socio-economic role in the Mediterranean for decades, and they continue to comprise over 80% of the fishing fleets and provide direct and indirect economic contributions to coastal communities. Their contribution to blue economy has so far been described as low, but this is largely due to a narrow conception both of benefits to be drawn from the development of maritime sectors (which have focused strongly on economic growth) and types of innovation that are capable of supporting the transition to sustainability (which have overlooked social innovation). This chapter outlines the multi-scale contributions of the small-scale fisheries and presents innovative approaches of the sector towards the markets, both of which support the inclusion of SSF in the blue economy sector. The chapter focuses on key instances of recently developed initiatives by the SSF across the Mediterranean with impacts on the supply chain and the marketing of their products. We argue that these market interventions contribute to the ultimate governance objectives, and challenge the conception of SSF as a non-innovative sector. We propose that a richer engagement with the blue economy paradigm supports the perception of the SSF as a prospective sector, to match the promotion of aquaculture among others.

Résumé :
This Social robot can be defined as a physical robot with capabilities of interacting with their surrounding in a social manner. Social robots should be designed both physically and socially. Designing them requires more than technical knowledge and should be taken as a transdisciplinary process in which engineers, program-mers, behavioral scientists and designers co-work. This study aims to explore the transdisciplinary nature of social robots as an emerging social artefact.A repertory grid study is conducted with 13 participants from different back-grounds to reveal the perceptual keywords about social robots. 50 potential users contributed to an anticipated user experience survey to understand their percep-tions. Outcomes of these two studies are compared. Results show that different professions involved have their own approach and way of understanding that cover varying aspects of social robotic field. This highlights the position of this study which supports transdisciplinary work, and believes transdisciplinarity’s positive contributions in the future research.

Résumé :
Banks are the pillars of entrepreneurship expansion and economic development. In developing countries, where there is little public financial support for entrepreneurs, it is clear that banks, among other financial institutions, should be part of the solution to the problem of financing economic activity. As financial intermediaries, commercial banks need to enjoy good perception among entrepreneurs to improve their profitability. To achieve such objective, banks sometimes adopt social responsibility strategies to influence public perception of banks’ behavior. How do Haitian entrepreneurs perceive Haitian banks’ social responsibility? To answer this question, we collect empirical data among entrepreneurs of all size (micro, small and large). The findings help interesting discussions of banks perception among entrepreneurs divided by demographic (gender, location) and economic (sector, size, assets) characteristics. Among the main conclusions, we find that banks enjoy very bad perception among entrepreneurs (all size). Also, the special concessions given by the Government and other international institutions to the banking industry in Haiti help very few to increase the financial services for Haitian entrepreneurs. From our conclusion arise questions for future research to study the relations between entrepreneurs’ own practices of corporate social responsibility and their perception of banks social responsibility.

In this thesis, the author evaluates the impact of the Listen – Inspire – Nurture (LIN) Center’s model of participatory urban community development in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). It evidences how LIN has supported urban not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) to alter their self-perception from ‘charity organisations’ to being part of community development processes. Using a participatory communication approach, LIN has encouraged dialogue with and among stakeholders and provided robust information to the community. Consequently, NPOs have become more confident in their own capacities and have more stable financial support. In addition, the corporate sector has a better understanding of the not-for-profit sector and is making a stronger contribution to the development of NPOs in HCMC. These outcomes contribute to effective and sustainable community development in HCMC.

Résumé :
Safe and effective vaccines against COVID-19 are seen as a critical path to ending the pandemic. This synthesis brings together data related to public perceptions about COVID-19 vaccines collected between March 2020 and March 2021 in 22 countries in Africa. It provides an overview of the data (primarily from cross-sectional perception surveys), identifies knowledge and research gaps and presents some limitations of translating the available evidence to inform local operational decisions. The synthesis is intended for those designing and delivering vaccination programmes and COVID-19 risk communication and community engagement (RCCE). 5 large-scale surveys are included with over 12 million respondents in 22 central, eastern, western and southern African countries (note: one major study accounts for more than 10 million participants); data from 14 peer-reviewed questionnaire surveys in 8 countries with n=9,600 participants and 15 social media monitoring, qualitative and community feedback studies. Sample sizes are provided in the first reference for each study and in Table 13 at the end of this document. The data largely predates vaccination campaigns that generally started in the first quarter of 2021. Perceptions will change and further syntheses, that represent the whole continent including North Africa, are planned. This review is part of the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) series on COVID-19 vaccines. It was developed for SSHAP by Anthrologica. It was written by Kevin Bardosh (University of Washington), Tamara Roldan de Jong and Olivia Tulloch (Anthrologica), it was reviewed by colleagues from PERC, LSHTM, IRD, and UNICEF (see acknowledgments) and received coordination support from the RCCE Collective Service.
Bano, Masooda. Curricula that Respond to Local Needs : Analysing Community Support for Islamic and Quranic Schools in Northern Nigeria. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), août 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2022/103.

Résumé :
Involving local communities in school management is seen to be crucial to improving the quality of education in state schools in developing countries; yet school-based management committees remain dormant in most such contexts. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with a rich network of community-supported Islamic and Quranic schools in the state of Kano in northern Nigeria—a sub-Saharan African region with very low education indicators, low economic growth, and political and social instability—this paper shows how making school curricula responsive to local value systems and economic opportunities is key to building a strong sense of community ownership of schools. Under community-based school management committees, control over more substantive educational issues—such as the content of school curricula and the nature of aspirations and concepts of a good life that it promotes among the students—remains firmly in the hands of the government education authorities, who on occasion also draw on examples from other countries and expertise offered by international development agencies when considering what should be covered. The paper shows that, as in the case of the urban areas, rural communities or those in less-developed urban centres lose trust in state schools when the low quality of education provided results in a failure to secure formal-sector employment. But the problem is compounded in these communities, because while state schools fail to deliver on the promise of formal-sector employment, the curriculum does promote a concept of a good life that is strongly associated with formal-sector employment and urban living, which remains out of reach for most; it also promotes liberal values, which in the local communities' perception are associated with Western societies and challenge traditional values and authority structures. The outcomes of such state schooling, in the experience of rural communities, are frustrated young people, unhappy with the prospect of taking up traditional jobs, and disrespectful of parents and of traditional authority structures. The case of community support for Islamic and Quranic schools in northern Nigeria thus highlights the need to consider the production of localised curricula and to adjust concepts of a good life to local contexts and economic opportunities, as opposed to adopting a standardised national curriculum which promotes aspirations that are out of reach.

Résumé :
Telecommuting, the practice of working remotely at home, increased significantly (25% to 35%) early in the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift represented a major societal change that reshaped the family, work, and social lives of many Californians. These changes also raise important questions about what factors influenced telecommuting before, during, and after COVID-19, and to what extent changes in telecommuting have influenced transportation patterns across commute modes, employment, land use, and environment. The research team conducted state-level telecommuting surveys using a crowd-sourced platform (i.e., Amazon Mechanical Turk) to obtain valid samples across California (n=1,985) and conducted state-level interviews among stakeholders (n=28) across ten major industries in California. The study leveraged secondary datasets and developed regression and time-series models. Our surveys found that, compared to pre-pandemic levels, more people had a dedicated workspace at home and had received adequate training and support for telecommuting, became more flexible to choose their own schedules, and had improved their working performance—but felt isolated and found it difficult to separate home and work life. Our interviews suggested that telecommuting policies were not commonly designed and implemented until COVID-19. Additionally, regression analyses showed that telecommuting practices have been influenced by COVID-19 related policies, public risk perception, home prices, broadband rates, and government employment. This study reveals advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting and unveils the complex relationships among the COVID-19 outbreak, transportation systems, employment, land use, and emissions as well as public risk perception and economic factors. The study informs statewide and regional policies to adapt to the new patterns of telecommuting.

Résumé :
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings. Underpinning all five areas is the recognition that human narratives remain crucial for ensuring the widest access to our shared past. There is no wish to see political and economic narratives abandoned but the need is recognised for there to be an expansion to more social narratives to fully explore the potential of the diverse evidence base. The questions that can be asked are here framed in a national context but they need to be supported and improved a) by the development of regional research frameworks, and b) by an enhanced study of Scotland’s international context through time. 1. From North Britain to the Idea of Scotland: Understanding why, where and how ‘Scotland’ emerges provides a focal point of research. Investigating state formation requires work from Medieval Scotland: a future for its past ii a variety of sources, exploring the relationships between centres of consumption - royal, ecclesiastical and urban - and their hinterlands. Working from site-specific work to regional analysis, researchers can explore how what would become ‘Scotland’ came to be, and whence sprang its inspiration. 2. Lifestyles and Living Spaces: Holistic approaches to exploring medieval settlement should be promoted, combining landscape studies with artefactual, environmental, and documentary work. Understanding the role of individual sites within wider local, regional and national settlement systems should be promoted, and chronological frameworks developed to chart the changing nature of Medieval settlement. 3. Mentalities: The holistic understanding of medieval belief (particularly, but not exclusively, in its early medieval or early historic phase) needs to broaden its contextual understanding with reference to prehistoric or inherited belief systems and frames of reference. Collaborative approaches should draw on international parallels and analogues in pursuit of defining and contrasting local or regional belief systems through integrated studies of portable material culture, monumentality and landscape. 4. Empowerment: Revisiting museum collections and renewing the study of newly retrieved artefacts is vital to a broader understanding of the dynamics of writing within society. Text needs to be seen less as a metaphor and more as a technological and social innovation in material culture which will help the understanding of it as an experienced, imaginatively rich reality of life. In archaeological terms, the study of the relatively neglected cultural areas of sensory perception, memory, learning and play needs to be promoted to enrich the understanding of past social behaviours. 5. Parameters: Multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches should be encouraged in order to release the research potential of all sectors of archaeology. Creative solutions should be sought to the challenges of transmitting the importance of archaeological work and conserving the resource for current and future research.
