Résumé :

Abstract A large amount of aerosol, commonly known as Particulate Matter (PM), is emitted to the atmosphere from land-use conversion, urbanization, and the use of fossil fuels from a variety of sectors. Aerosol affect climate, environment, to human health. Each location might have different aerosols types due to various sources, sinks, and local characteristics. Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) has been established to investigate and monitor aerosol world-wide included in Indonesia. This work aims to study aerosol optical properties retrieved from AERONET in four locations namely Bandung, Jambi, Pontianak, and Palangkaraya. Seasonal and daily variability in AOD and Angstrom exponent (α), also aerosol classification, is analyzed. The result shows that aerosol characteristics such as AOD and α in Bandung are different from Jambi, Palangkaraya, and Pontianak due to different aerosol sources. AOD clearly increases during the burning period (dry period) in Jambi, Palangkaraya, and Pontianak. The highest AOD monthly maximum recorded in Palangkaraya as of 4.51 during September. On the other hand, AOD in Bandung does not show significant variation during dry and rainy season. Mixed aerosols (coarse and fine mode) are present in all locations. However, the dominance of fine mode is depicted from high percent frequency of occurrence in Jambi, Palangkaraya, Pontianak, and Bandung, which are 33.4%, 31.38%, 25.14% (α range bin 1.6-1.8) and 37.16% (α range bin 1.4-1.6) respectively. There was a period of α1 with 1AOD6 in Jambi, Palangkaraya, and Pontianak suggesting smoke fire from peatland, while AOD close to 1 with α1 as the character of urban aerosol is prominent in Bandung. IntisariSejumlah besar aerosol, atau yang dikenal dengan partikulat, diemisikan ke atmosfer dari aktivitas konversi penggunaan lahan, urbanisasi, dan pembakaran bahan bakar fosil dari berbagai sektor. Aerosol memengaruhi iklim, lingkungan, hingga kesehatan manusia. Setiap lokasi memiliki jenis aerosol berbeda karena perbedaan sumber polusi dan cara penyerapannya, serta karakteristik lokal daerah tersebut. Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) dibentuk untuk menginvestigasi dan memantau aerosol di seluruh dunia termasuk di Indonesia. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mempelajari sifat optik aerosol yang diperoleh dari AERONET di empat lokasi yaitu Bandung, Jambi, Pontianak, dan Palangkaraya. Variabilitas musiman dan harian parameter AOD dan Angstrom eksponen (α) serta klasifikasi aerosol juga dianalisis. Hasil dari studi menunjukkan karakteristik aerosol seperti AOD dan α di Bandung berbeda dari Jambi, Palangkaraya, dan Pontianak karena perbedaan sumber aerosol. AOD meningkat selama periode kebakaran lahan (musim kemarau) di Jambi, Palangkaraya, dan Pontianak. Maksimum bulanan AOD tertinggi tercatat di Palangkaraya sebesar 4.51 pada September. Di sisi lain, AOD di Bandung tidak menunjukkan variasi yang besar pada musim kemarau dan hujan. Aerosol campuran (partikel kasar dan halus) terdapat di semua lokasi. Namun, dominasi aerosol berukuran halus digambarkan oleh tingginya frekuensi kejadian di Jambi, Palangkaraya, Pontianak, dan Bandung masing-masing 33,4%, 31,38%, 25,14% (α range bin 1,6-1,8) dan 37,16% (α range bin 1,4-1.6). Terdapat periode dimana α 1 dengan 1 AOD 6 di Jambi, Palangkaraya, dan Pontianak menunjukkan sumber aerosol berasal dari kebakaran asap dari lahan gambut, sementara AOD mendekati 1 dengan α 1 sebagai karakter dari aerosol perkotaan menonjol di Bandung.

Résumé :

Studi ini merangkum penelitian tentang estimasi PM2.5 menggunakan algoritme pembelajaran mesin random forest (RF), penginderaan jauh, dan keduanya. Tujuan dari tinjauan ini adalah menyajikan studi yang komprehensif untuk memfasilitasi dan menentukan batasan, luas dan kedalaman pengetahuan yang dieksplorasi untuk memperkirakan konsentrasi PM2.5 di masa depan menggunakan RF dan pengindraan jauh. PM2.5 merupakan parameter lingkungan atmosfer yang penting, terutama karena dampaknya terhadap kesehatan manusia dan lingkungan. Terlepas dari skala spasial-temporal, perkiraan PM2.5 yang akurat penting untuk memahami dan menanggapi berbagai efek buruk dari polusi udara. Oleh karena itu, metode penginderaan jauh dan pembelajaran mesin dikembangkan untuk mendapatkan estimasi PM2.5 resolusi tinggi dan mengurangi kesalahan penilaian yang disebabkan oleh dislokasi spasial. Sejak penggunaan pertama jaringan saraf (NN) untuk mempelajari hubungan kompleks AOD-PM2.5, lebih dari 40 artikel terkait ML telah diterbitkan dalam dekade terakhir, dan lebih dari 90% di antaranya telah diterbitkan dalam lima tahun dan 75% dalam tiga tahun terakhir. Metode validasi yang mempertimbangkan pola spasial dalam validasi model ML mengungkapkan bahwa RF dan BPNN adalah yang paling populer digunakan.

Obiettivo: Nelle ricerche sui consumi di sostanze psicotrope, solitamente il contesto viene trattato come un prodotto di processi strutturali più ampi, riducendo le possibilità di una comprensione più accurata delle specificità locali. Durante il lavoro sul campo (2017-2018), Milano Rogoredo veniva considerata la più grande scena aperta del consumo osservabile nel nord Italia. L’obiettivo della ricerca è quello di documentare come il contesto in esame viene influenzato dalle pratiche di consumo e viceversa. Metodologia: La ricerca si serve della metodologia del caso studio per raccogliere e mettere in dialogo diversi tipi di informazioni. L’approccio etnografico utilizzato include interviste in profondità e semi strutturate (42), osservazione partecipante (70 giorni), articoli di cronaca, mappe e fotografie. La cornice teorica post-strutturalista, si basa sugli elementi analitici proposti da Duff (2007): spazio, incorporamento e pratiche. Risultati: La scena aperta del consumo di Rogoredo si configura come un luogo di segregazione socio-spaziale. Le pratiche di consumo che la caratterizzano, creano uno spazio di resistenza nella città tossica. Il disordine droga-correlato percepito dai cittadini porta alla richiesta di purificazione sociale e spaziale. La zona di resistenza che si configura nella scena aperta del consumo fa emergere di legami di comunità e favorisce la diffusione di pratiche di consumo, che richiedono competenze specifiche. La tecnologia della siringa riproduce mondi e divisioni sociali, così come differenze generazionali. La violenza permea le routine e le pratiche quotidiane, che includono lavoro sessuale droga correlato e attività informali di sussistenza. La mancanza di interventi di riduzione del danno strutturati e duraturi riduce lo spazio per negoziare questa violenza. Limiti/implicazioni: I risultati sono specifici del contesto in cui lo studio è stato condotto. I contatti e le informazioni sono stati raccolti in buona parte attraverso gli interventi di riduzione del danno (gatekeeeper). Considerata la strategia di reclutamento adottata, i consumatori non possono essere considerati come rappresentativi della popolazione di riferimento. Valore aggiunto: Nonostante un’ampia letteratura internazionale, l’Italia mostra una mancanza di studi sociologici sulle scene aperte del consumo, in particolare per quanto riguarda l’impatto del contesto sulle pratiche locali di consumo. I risultati possono orientare strategie di riduzione del danno più efficaci e fornire delle evidenze iniziali sull’impatto delle misure istituzionali adottate per far fronte alle scene aperte. La ricerca si propone anche come riferimento per future indagini sulle pratiche di consumo di sostanze psicotrope in relazione al contesto.
Purpose: In most recent drug research, context is still treated as a product of broad structural processes, reducing the chances for a more finely-grained understanding of time and place of consumption. At the time of the field work, Milano Rogoredo was the biggest urban open drug scene in northern Italy. Starting form this case study, the goal of the present work is to document how the specific context is produced through the activity of drug use and how the so constructed context intervenes in the modulation of drug use itself. Methodology: In the research, the case study methodology is implied in order to collect and put into dialogue data of different nature. Analysis was conducted through an ethnographic approach which includes in-depth and semi-structured interviews (42), participant observation (70 days), news articles and use of maps and photos. Drawing on a post-structural theoretical framework, the methodology is based on the analytical elements proposed by Duff (2007): space, embodiment and practices. Findings: Drug use practices embedded in the Milano Rogoredo open drug scene impact on space representations creating a place of resistance in the narcotic city. The so-called drug related nuisance tends to result in a claim for social and spatial purification from citizens. The resistance zone that develops within the open drug scene allows the emergence of community bonds and fosters the spread of drug use practices that involve specific skills. The social object of the syringe reproduces social worlds, social divisions and generational differences. Violence permeates the every-day routines and practices which include drug related sex work and beggary. The lack of structured harm reduction interventions reduces the space to negotiate this violence. Research limitations/implications: The results are specific of the context in which the study was conducted. Contacts and data were mainly gained starting from harm reduction interventions, since these organisations provide the most accessible contact with drug users. Given the recruitment strategy adopted, individuals who are part of the study cannot be considered as representative of the drug using population as a whole. Value/practical implications: Despite a wide international literature, Italy shows a lack of sociological accounts of open drug scenes, particularly regarding the impact of context on local drug use practices. This research gives visibility to the effect of the local setting on drug use practices in a long-lasting ODS in Milan (Italy). In the effort to make interventions always more effective, results can orient harm reduction strategies and provide initial evidence on the impact of institutional measures to face ODS. Along with punctual aspects, outcomes can also orient future research on drug consumption practices and context relevance in drug use settings.

Syftet med studien är att identifiera betydande skillnader mellan vägledningsverksamheterna på University of Wisconsin-Whitewater och Umeå universitet. Ytterligare ett huvudsyfte är att ge förslag på hur studie- och yrkesvägledarna kan utveckla sina vägledningsverksamheter med utgångspunkt i de skillnader vi identifierat. Detta är en komparativ fältstudie med kvalitativa intervjuer. Informanterna är sex studie- och yrkesvägledare som ger en bild av hur vägledningsverksamheterna är organiserade. De berättar om sina arbetsuppgifter och arbetssätt samt vilka utvecklingsbehov de ser inom respektive verksamhet och redogör för sin kompetens. De teoretiska utgångspunkterna är vägledningsmetoder som visat sig vara effektiva internationellt, förklaringar av vägledningstraditionerna som format vägledarkåren i olika länder samt redogörelse för studie- och yrkesvägledarutbildningarna i Sverige och USA. Resultatet visade att det förekom stora skillnader. Av störst betydelse bedöms vara att Umeå universitet har en välutvecklad e-vägledning och drop-in vägledning men saknar karriärvägledning tillgänglig för alla studenter. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater saknar e- vägledning med personlig kontakt öga mot öga samt drop-in vägledning, men lägger stort fokus på karriärvägledning. Slutsatsen är att båda vägledningsverksamheterna kan utveckla sin vägledning genom att lära av dessa skillnader via ett utbyte av vägledningskompetens.
The purpose of the study is to identify significant differences between the counseling centers at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Umeå University. Another main objective is to provide suggestions on how study and career counselors can develop their counseling centers on the basis of the differences identified. This study is a comparative field study with qualitative interviews. The informants are six study and career counselors that provide a picture of how the counseling centers are organized. They talk about their jobs and working practices as well as the need to develop their organizations. They also point out their counseling skills. Counseling methods proven effective internationally, counseling traditions influencing the practice of counseling today and the differences between the Study and Career Counseling Program in Sweden and USA are the theoretical points from where we take our support. The results show that there are in fact big differences. The differences considered to be of most importance is that Umeå University has a well-developed online counseling (e- counseling) and drop-in counseling but has no career counseling available to all students. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is devoid of all face to face e-counseling and drop-in counseling but adds a strong focus on career counseling. The conclusion is that both counseling centers can develop its counseling by learning from these differences through an exchange of counseling skills.

A multiple case study (of three distinct American studio arts units) of the academic restructuring phenomenon within this specific locus, examining the interplay of studio arts culture with the larger institutional mandates in the restructuring process, this work approaches restructuring as a series of cultural and survivalist responses to a complex and changing environment.

Syftet med vår studie var att undersöka vilka eventuella skillnader och likheter i kompetenser som studie- och yrkesvägledare och coacher besitter och använder i sitt arbete. Utifrån vårt syfte formulerade vi följande tre forskningsfrågor; Vilka kompetenser har de intervjuade studie- och yrkesvägledare erfarenhet av i sin yrkesutövning? Vilka kompetenser har de intervjuade coacherna erfarenhet av i sin yrkesutövning? Och Vilka är de två yrkebenämningarnas eventuella skillnader och likheter i avseende på kompetensinnehav och kompetensanvändning. För att få svar på våra forskningsfrågor så valde vi att genomföra åtta stycken kvalitativa intervjuer med fyra stycken studie- och yrkesvägledare och fyra stycken coacher där samtliga arbetar inom området studier och/eller arbete. För att analysera vårt resultat så tog vi hjälp av EU ́s organ, Cedefops kompetensbeskrivningar av vägledarens arbetsuppgifter samt Kerstin Keens kompetensbeskrivning och Knud Illeris utökade kompetensbegrepp. Resultatet visar att studie- och yrkesvägledarna lyfter fram fem stycken fokusområden vilka är; Metoder och teorier, Empati, Acceptera människors olikheter och olika förutsättningar, Motivation och hopp samt Trygghet, gällande vilka kompetenser som de besitter och använder. Även coacherna lyfter i sina intervjuer fram fem stycken fokusområden vilka är; Arbetssätt och metoder med klienten, Hjälpa klienten att se sina framgångar eller brister, Att klienten åstadkommer något, Våga vara obekväm samt Anpassningar, gällande vilka kompetenser som de besitter och använder. Resultatet visade även att studie- och yrkesvägledarna i vår studie har ett större fokus kring metoder och teorier än våra intervjuade coacher hade. Coacherna däremot hade ett stort fokus på att våga vara obekväm, vara ärlig och att arbeta med att utmana klienterna på olika sätt, vilket inte var lika tydligt hos studie- och yrkesvägledarna. Resultatet visade även på likheter så som att båda yrkesrollerna arbetar empatiskt samt att de arbetar utifrån kompetensen att kunna motivera klienterna till handling. Resultatet från vår studie kan inte uppfattas som generell för alla studie- och yrkesvägledare eller alla coacher utan kan bara hjälpa oss att få en inblick i de kompetenser som de båda yrkesrollerna besitter och använder.
The purpose of our study was to investigate the possible differences and similarities in the skills that study and career counselors and coaches own and use in their work. Based on our purpose, we formulated the following three research questions; What skills does the interviewed study and career counselors have experience off in their professional practices? What skills does the interviewed coaches have experience off in their professional practices? And what are the differences and similarities between the two occupations in terms of competence and competence use. To answer our research questions, we chose to conduct eight qualitative interviews with four study and career counselors and four coaches, all working in the field of study and / or work. In order to analyze our results, we took the help of EU bodies, Cedefop's competence descriptions of the supervisor's duties, and Kerstin Keen's competence description and Knud Illeri's extended competence description. The results show that the study and career counselors highlight five focus areas which are; Methods and Theories, Empathy, Accepting People's Differences and Different Conditions, Motivation and Hope, and Safety, regarding the skills they possess and use. The coaches also highlight five focus areas in their interviews, which are; Way of working and methods with the client, Help the client to see their successes or shortcomings, That the client accomplishes something, The ability be uncomfortable, and Adaptations, regarding the skills they possess and use. The results also showed that the study and career counselors in our study have a greater focus on methods and theories than our interviewed coaches had. The coaches, on the other hand, had a great focus on the ability to be uncomfortable, honest and to work to challenge the clients in different ways, which was not as clear in the case of the study and career counselors. The result also showed similarities such as the fact that both professional roles work empathically and that they work with the ability to motivate the clients into action. The results of our study can not be perceived as general for all student counselors or coaches, but can help us gain insight into the skills that both professors possess and use in their work with clients in this area.

Résumé :

This thesis discusses the interaction between media and power in China, and the influences ofthe interaction on the quality and role of journalism. The interaction is an outcome of the social process in which dissimilar values and disproportionate power compete for media discourse. The existing academic literature in the area of media-power relations over-emphasises the top-down influences of the Party-state and the market, and neglects the bottom-up counteracting force from journalists and newspaper organisations on the quality and role of journalism. Supported by the sociological theory of professionalism, this empirical work examines the cultural transformation of two newspaper organisations and the work of their journalists by using a micro approach. The arguments in this study are based on in-depth interviews with 71 journalists, participant observation during six-months of fieldwork, and textual analyses of news reports on social problems. This study has four major findings. Firstly, this study identifies a group of advocacy journalists that is emerging in China. Being different to journalists who practice Party journalism, this group of journalists wishes to tell the 'subjective truth' and they believe they can improve social development. Furthermore, their journalistic practices are coherent with professionalism. This genre of journalists is driven either by private impulse to achieve public recognition, or by a public motive of serving the public interest. Overcoming obstacles in the process of news reporting, they are practicing their beliefs. In their reports, journalists give voice to the underprivileged and no longer speak for the Party. Secondly, the coherence between advocacy journalists' practices and professionalism, however, is limited by conflicts of interest between newspaper organisations and journalists. Due to concerns about political safety, newspaper organisations limit the courageous practices of advocacy journalism. Journalists gain autonomy when the media organisation fulfils its interests. Journalists and newsrooms exploit a series of journalistic tactics to avoid touching political 'minefields' and to maximise the pursuit of private and public interests. Thirdly, the concern over political safety from the newsroom encounters the need to consider the requirements of other social forces on journalism. The intertwined power relations, and bottom-up factors, i.e. journalists' cognition and belief, the collective professionalism ofjournalists, newsroom culture, and local geo-culture plays an important role. They are either opposed to, or collaborate with, political and market intervention. The interest clash is reflected in the process of self-censorship. Finally, the value priorities of newspaper organisation and wmnmg power m power contests cause the newspaper to decide whether to seek refuge with the authority or to tactically serve the public interest. The former tends to practice Party journalism and help maintain existing social order, by speaking for the authority and the elite. By contrast, although also practicing self-censorship, the latter uses smarter tactics to make a win-win achievement of enjoying commercial revenues and of benefiting democracy and social development. A crevice is therefore created for diversified discourses that contribute to the reconfiguration of power structures and social development.

Studie- och yrkesvägledning är en profession vilken samtliga, som gått i skolan i Sverige, har en relation till. Vi har samtliga någon gång under skoltiden mött en vägledare. Lika många möten verkar generera lika många historier och de är inte alltid av god karaktär. Det hänger förhoppningsvis ihop med att det idag inte finns något krav på behörighet för att få arbeta som studie- och yrkesvägledare. Det gör att många möten med vägledare har skett utan de kunskaper, förförståelse och professionalism som en utbildad vägledare med behörighet medför. Forskningsfältet är enigt om att yrkesrollen måste stärkas, undersökas och framhållas på bred front. Denna studie bidrar till att förtydliga vikten av vägledarutbildningens betydelse för yrkesrollen och förtydligar vad som påverkar hur en utbildad vägledare arbetar. Studien är kvalitativt genomförd med respondenter som har gått vägledarutbildningen vid Stockholms universitet. Resultatet visar på ett tydligt samband mellan hur vägledarutbildningen och arbetsplatskulturen samverkar och påverkar hur vägledarna arbetar. Även att vägledarnas arbete kan härledas till kända vägledningsteorier och metoder. Viss kritik mot vägledarutbildningens relevans för yrkesrollen framkommer. Studien resulterar i en modell som kan användas för att beskriva vägledaryrket.
Study and career counseling is a profession which all who have attended school in Sweden is familiar with. We have all at some time during the school day met a counselor. Just as many meetings seem to generate as many stories and they are not always of good character. Hopefully it hangs together with the fact that today there is no requirement for competency to work as a study and career counselor. This means that many meetings with guidance counselors have been conducted without the knowledge, understanding and professionalism as a trained counselor with competence entails. The researchers are agreed that the professional role must be strengthened, investigated and acknowledged on a broad front. This study helps to clarify the importance of the counselor’s education and what this means for the profession and clarify what influences how an educated counselor performs in his professional role. The study is qualitative and conducted with respondents who have studied counseling at Stockholm University. The results show a clear correlation between how counseling education and workplace culture interact and affect how counselors work, even how the counselors work can be traced to accepted theories and methods and also some criticism against counseling educations relevance to their professional role. The study results in a model that can be used to describe the counseling profession.

In recent years, a variant of residual income often called Economic Value Added (EVA)' or Economic Income (EI) has become a popular concern in academia and business communities. This study investigates the general hypothesis that EVA is more highly associated with shareholder wealth and firm values than are traditional performance measures. Two commonly used value-based performance metrics namely, Total Shareholder Return (TSR) and Tobin's Q are also considered to highlight the valuerelevance of EVA vis-a-vis these measures in predicting shareholder wealth. Using a sample of panel data of around 12,000 firm-year observations taken from the Stem Stewart 1000 EVA/MVA database and the DATASTREAM file over the period 1991-2002, this study finds compelling evidence that shareholder value is a function of EVA. This study also provides evidence consistent with the notion that EVA outperforms other traditional performance measures in explaining shareholder wealth. Valuerelevance tests reveal EVA to be more highly associated with shareholder wealth than TSR and Tobin's Q. The incremental tests also suggest that EVA possesses the largest explanatory power (or information usefulness) over TSR and Tobin's Q. These results conclusively support the claims made by EVA proponents and further support the potential usefulness of the EVA metric for internal and external performance.

Denna kvalitativa studie syftar till att studera vilka motivationer vi kan finna hos de som modifierar det digitala spelet Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, samt vad det är de modifierar. Inom studiens ramar knyter vi även samman motivationer och modifikationer. Vi presenterar även relaterad forskning samt introducerar ämnet digital spelmodifiering. Slutsatsen vi kommer fram till är att det finns flera motivationer av varierande slag, vilka kan knytas till flertalet modifikationskategorier. Vi kommer även fram till att vår slutsats kan kopplas till det modifikations-community som är knutet till Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, nämligen ‘Nexus’, genom att vi använder oss av den kulturella kontexten.
This qualitative study is aimed at studying what motivations can be found among those who modify the digital game Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim, and what it is that they modify. Within the confines of this study we also connect motivations and modifications. We also introduce related research and the subject of digital game modification. The conclusion we arrive at is that there are varied motivations that can be connected to several modification categories. We also conclude that our conclusion can be tied to the modification forum for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, called ‘Nexus’, in regards to cultural context.

This paper addresses an obscure aspect surrounding Solon’s activity, which occurred after his political and legislative activity and before his opposition to Pisistratus’ moves towards tyranny. It tackles, more specifically, the way in which Solon may have been indirectly involved (as a politician but also as a sophos) in a triangle of interests that would include, besides himself, two personalities associated with a period of stasis (Damasias) and with the status of sophos (Thales). In order to achieve this goal, the present study combines two different approaches: it first analyses the historical circumstances that marked Athens during the period immediately after Solon’s legislation, until the moment when Damasias held the archonship, and then clung to office for a further year and two months; it then discusses the testimony of Demetrius of Phalerum (quoted by Diogenes Laertius, 1.22), according to whom Thales was named for the first time sophos during the archonship of Damasias.

Demosthenes is recognized as a defender of Athenian democracy and freedom, particularly in voicing his concern about the growth of Macedonian power. While the defence of democracy is a recurring theme in his speeches, Demosthenes did not develop a theory of democracy. Rather, he tended to idealize the Athenian democratic experience. Further, in his defence of democracy and the ethos of the democratic citizen, Demosthenes references oligarchy, though again not from a theoretical perspective. The objective of this paper is to analyse Demosthenes’s use of the democratic and oligarchical forms of government in his defence of Athens, with a focus on his construction of an antithesis between them and his deployment of the Athenian experiences with oligarchy in 411 and 404 BC in his oratory.

Basing on the accounts of Thucydides and Plutarch, the paper analyses the way Sicily and the proposed Athenian expedition to Sicily, as a strategic bridge to advance over Carthage, define Nicias and Alcibiades, and what they represent: old Athens, comprised of experienced rulers and devoted, thoughtful citizens, who retreat, aware of the madness and threat of disaster that will lead to the ruinous outcome of the civil war. Forced to join the expedition, Nicias, as the embodiment of this polis, will stay until the end, in a campaign with which he does not agree, trying to save his fellow citizens. Alcibiades together with what he represents are fighting fiercely for the realisation of a megalomaniacal dream that will bring fortune and power for their own advantage. While Nicias accepts the command out of duty and imitation, Alcibiades yearns for it. In this background, Sicily and Carthage, waving from afar with their wealth and promise of power, constitute the stimulus for action that ultimately destroys an Athens close to defeat. On the other hand, in the young Roman republic, Sicily and Carthage offer natural encouragement of the conquest and submission of their power, as an imperative of the logic of expansion, affirmation and survival of Rome as a nascent power. It is the generation of the old Roman nobility that claims Carthago delenda est.

Recent studies indicate that British appeasement towards Hitler followed a buying-time logic, i.e., it tried to postpone confrontation until Great Britain improved its military position through rearmament. However, this chapter shows that Germany actually extended its military edge over the appeasement years. Drawing on the literature on judgment and decision-making, the chapter theorizes that competition neglect – the tendency to focus myopically on one’s own capabilities and pay insufficient attention to those of the competition – may explain the puzzling gap between British policymakers’ plans and actual trends in the balance of power. The competition neglect thesis and an alternative explanation, positing the occurrence of miscalculation, are tested with a case study of British foreign policy towards Germany in 1937-38.

Albert Einstein abruptly rose to worldwide fame in November 1919, after Arthur Eddington announced the successful measurement of the gravitational light bending predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The measurement had been performed by an expedition towards two remote Portuguese-speaking destinations, the island of Príncipe in equatorial Africa and Sobral in northern Brazil, where the total solar eclipse of May 29, 1919 was visible and allowed to measure the position of stars close to the Sun, revealing the sought-after effect. This journey was the beginning of a story that still goes on today.

Thucydides’ attention to natural phenomena, such as the plague, volcanoes, earthquakes, eclipses and floods, is well known. These are uncontrollable events that typically cause enormous environmental, political and military disturbance, further heightening the unpredictability and destructiveness of a war that, from the outset, is characterised as a great movement (kinesis megiste). But it is not only catastrophic natural phenomena that pique the Athenian historian’s interest. As we aim to demonstrate in this study, nature and natural phenomena impose themselves as active forces that are superior to man, interfering in the Peloponnesian War with significant political consequences. On the other hand, the bellicose actions of man impose themselves upon nature with grave environmental costs.

Part I of the book focusses on three villages in the Municipality of Përmet: Bënjë, Kosinë and Leusë. Bënjë, which lies entirely within the "Bredhi i Hotovës - Dangëlli" National Park, has undergone anthropization processes since prehistoric times. Due to its landscape and architectural value, it was recognised in 2016 as a “historical centre” and as such has come under the protection of the National Institute for the Cultural Heritage. There is little information concerning the history of Kosinë. The inhabitants show a strong connection with the Byzantine Church of the Dormition of Mary, but regrettably, it was impossible to go back to the origins of the current settlement. The village of Leusë, instead, existed before 1812, the year in which the Church of the Dormition of Mary was built. Today, the image of the village is a consequence of the partial reconstruction occured after the severe damage suffered during World War II. In the first chapters, the importance of the intangible heritage is stressed. Përmet’s food heritage is well-known on a national scale for its typical products (spirits, fruit preserves, dairy, meat, honey and bakery products), which result from the favourable climatic conditions and the rich biodiversity of the area. The tradition of the Tosk iso-polyphony, the hospitality of Përmet inhabitants and their historical devotion to religion, knowledge and study emerge with great strength together with the craftsmanship traditions and the exceptional skills of the itinerant and seasonal master builders. In the following chapters, the multiple aspects of the tangible heritage are analysed. The landscape in Përmet includes a vast variety of habitats, which have preserved to a large extent their original qualities. It is deeply marked by the Vjosa River and other several minor watercourses that crisscross the territory. A special attention is given to the historical built heritage of the villages, and specifically to three architectural assets (all listed as category I Cultural Monuments): the Katiu Bridge in Bënjë (an Ottoman bridge of the 18th century), the Church of the Dormition of Mary in Leusë (a Post-Byzantine building of the 19th century), and the Church of the Dormition of Mary in Kosinë (a Byzantine building of the end of the 12th century). For each of the aforementioned issues, the theoretical and historical analysis are closely bound to an evaluation of those features of the cultural heritage that could be enhanced to guarantee a sustainable tourism development of the area. Each chapter ends with a consistent set of specific intervention strategies. They are substantive tools for action aimed at public and private local actors.

We analyze the political actions of Theramenes as described by Thucydides (during the coup of 411 BCE) and Xenophon (under the Thirty, 404-403 BCE) to map the features that converged to make him a paradigmatic character in the ancient Greek political imaginary. Xenophon, at least, may have been an eyewitness to the facts reported and both historians have conditioned Theramenes’ portrayal by later authors. We highlight the traits of Theramenes that fostered his identification as either the quintessence of the turncoat or as a role-model for moderate politics. Our goal is also to discuss the implications of his political stances for the configuration of Athenian democracy in the last quarter of the 5th century and how this may still help us consider our own democratic system and its flaws.

The current contribution aims at describing some key-aspects of Rocchi and Demonte’s graphic novels “Primavere e Autunni” (2015) and “Chinamen” (2017), especially in relation to: 1) the historical reconstruction of Chinese migration to Italy; 2) the challenge of widespreading negative stereotypes against Chinese migrants, which still characterize dominant public discourse in Italian society. The first paragraph will highlight theoretical aspects of both works, in particular relation to the literature on migration and of migration, with Sinoitalian literature, as well as with macro- and micro-aspects of Chinese migration to Italy. After that, some common points of both works will be underlined, including structure and style, semiotic aspects, communicative functions and multimodality. The third paragraph will specifically focus on a series of key-figures described in the graphic novels, which contribute to draw the attention to specific aspects regarding Chinese historical presence in Milan and in Italy.

Chariklia Martalas's “Eating John Vorster" brings to light the assassination of Hendrik Verwoerd, “the architect of Apartheid,” by Dimitri Tsafendas. As an act of social responsibility, the author presents the intergenerational trauma of Apartheid to a transnational community of readers. This article, drawing on an interview with Martalas, argues that her reading of Dante’s Inferno rewrites a traumatic South African memory as well as transforms the reader into a responsible witness and messenger. Martalas establishes an ideal friendship with Dante and, while powerfully reactivating and rewriting his vivid imagery, unveils a contemporary tragedy. Her creative text addresses the reader’s consciousness and questions the interconnection among language, values, and actions.
