Résumé :
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) are computer systems designed to provide individualised help to students, learning in a problem solving context. The difference between an ITS and a Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) system is that an ITS has a Student Model which allows it to provide a better educational environment. The Student Model contains information on what the student knows, and does not know, about the domain being learnt, as well as other personal characteristics such as preferred learning style. This research has resulted in the design and development of a new ITS: Personal Access Tutor (PAT). PAT is an ITS that helps students to learn Rapid Application Development in a database environment. More specifically, PAT focuses on helping students to learn how to create forms and reports in Microsoft Access. To provide an augmented learning environment, PAT’s architecture is different to most other ITSs. Instead of having a simulation, PAT uses a widelyused database development environment (Microsoft Access). This enables the students to ask for help, while developing real applications using real database software. As part of this research, I designed and created the knowledge base required for PAT. This contains four models: the domain, student, tutoring and exercises models. The Instructional Expert I created for PAT provides individualised help to the students to help them correctly finish each exercise, and also proposes the next exercise that a student should work on. PAT was evaluated by students enrolled in the Databases subject at QUT, and by staff members involved in teaching the subject. The results of the evaluation were positive and are discussed in the thesis.

Résumé :
The purpose of this project is three fold:(a) a review of the literature regarding student ratings, (b) the creation of a student rating database and (c) the development of an applications manual to accompany the database. From a thorough review of the literature, this project identifies the utility and usefulness of student ratings as one element in the evaluation of instruction. The literature review addressed the following questions: (a) Do we need student ratings of instructors? (b) Can student rating data be used to improve instruction? (c) can we be sure that the data and the means by which they are acquired are valid and reliable? (d) Are there variables that may bias student ratings?, and (e) How can a database be used to help improve the effectiveness of classroom instruction? The second goal of this project was to established a student rating database designed to house data from past, present and future student ratings. The database contains variables currently collected by the student rating system of Western Kentucky University. In addition, the database contains variables identified by the research as helpful in the interpretation of rating data. Lastly, a database applications manual (see Appendix) was developed which provides the user step-by-step directions for program access, data entry, data storage, and data retrieval/export.

Résumé :
The purpose is to analyze if the students have any use of their computer education at a senior high school level or if there is a demand for them to proceed studying. Does the students background have any importance or is it their own motivation that makes the student advance to higher education. In this report we ask ourselves the question, if the students have any use of the knowledge gained at senior high school in computer studies at a higher level. Do the students have any chance for employment based on their senior high school grades in computer studies after graduation?  Do the schools that follow the senior high school guidelines within programming and databases give these students an advantage towards those that have not received the same fundamental education? The method used for the survey is a group questionnaire.  The questionnaire was distributed at one and the same time and then collected to examine the results. The survey results showed that students who seek work based only on their senior high school grades, received only a temporary position for different lengths of time. Computer education at a senior high school is a preparatory education for collage. Those students that have graduated from  senior high school and are keeping up to date with collage oriented subjects within the field of programming and databases, give their students an advantage when they begin reading at a more advanced level.

Résumé :
We considered the problem of predicting student retention using logistic regression when the most important covariates such as the college variables are latent, but the network structure is known. This network structure specifies the relationship between pre-college to college variables and then from college to student retention variables. Based on this structure, we developed three estimators, examined their large-sample properties, and evaluated their empirical efficiencies using WKU student retention database. Results show that while the hat estimator is expected to be most efficient, the tilde estimator was shown to be more efficient than the check method. This increased efficiency suggests that utilizing the network information can improve our predictions.

Résumé :
This study determined the impact of master scheduling models on student performance as reported by the AEIS database in the high schools of the SAISD. General student performance and the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills were the primary measures for comparison. The SAISD made a transition from an A-B block schedule in 2002 to a traditional-seven period model in 2003. Conclusions have been made as to the degree of influence that traditional and block schedules have on student performance. The population of this study was the eight high schools of the SAISD. All students enrolled on these campuses were included in the data analysis. The population was 14,418 students during the 2002-2003 school year and 13,689 in 2003-2004. Descriptive statistics and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were the measures utilized for the purposes of population comparisons and data review. Based on the findings of this study, the recommendations for practice indicate the following: 1. Attendance ratings did not return statistical significance on a traditional schedule. 2. Advanced Course participation and AP/IB testing results returned statistical significance on a traditional schedule. 3. SAT and ACT did not return statistical significance on a traditional schedule. 4. TAKS Campus Performance did not return statistical significance on a traditional schedule. 5. TAKS Reading/ELA, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies scores returned statistical significance on a traditional schedule. 6. African American, Hispanic and Special Education Performance returned statistical significance in TAKS Science and TAKS Social Studies on a traditional schedule. 7. White Performance returned statistical significance in TAKS Science on a traditional schedule. 8. Economically Disadvantaged Performance returned statistical significance in each area of the TAKS assessment on a traditional schedule. 9. Limited English Proficient Performance returned statistical significance in TAKS Math on a traditional schedule.

Résumé :
Education is commonly seen as an escape from poverty and a critical path to securing a better standard of living. This is especially relevant in the South African context, where the need is so great that in one instance people were trampled to death at the gates of a higher educational institution, whilst attempting to register for this opportunity. The root cause of this great need is a limited capacity and a demand, which outstrips the supply. This is not a problem specific to South Africa. It is however exaggerated in the South African context due to the country's lack of infrastructure and the opening of facilities to all people. Tertiary educational institutions are faced with ever-increasing applications for a limited number of available positions. This study focuses on a dataset from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology - with the aim of establishing guidelines for the use of data modelling techniques to improve student admissions criteria. The importance of data preprocessing was highlighted and generalized linear regression, decision trees and neural networks were proposed and motivated for modelling. Experimentation was carried out, resulting in a number of recommended guidelines focusing on the tremendous value of feature engineering coupled with the use of generalized linear regression as a base line. Adding multiple models was highly recommended; since it allows for greater opportunities for added insight.

Résumé :
The purpose of this essay is to examine how high school students (age 13 to 19) search for information on the web and in databases. Furthermore, it aims to look into how critical of sources they are. The questions asked was: how the students search for information in digital media? Which kind of sources do the students use? How they evaluate the information they find? Do they get any education in information retrieval and source evaluation? To answer these questions students were interviewed in groups about their information retrieval behavior. Furthermore two school librarians were interviewed about their experience of the students’ information retrieval.During the interviews it was clear that the students had received quite sparse instructions on the subjects of information retrieval and criticism of the sources. Some students did not even know what the latter was. Their methods for information retrieval were quite simple and, especially in the case of the younger students, without much thought behind. Their main strategy seemed to be Google and Wikipedia. From the interviews with the school librarian I learned that one of the reasons the students do not receive instructions in the above mentioned subjects is the lack of interest from the teachers. The librarians thought that the solution was to build up a stronger relationship with the teachers.

Résumé :
During the Spring 1997 semester, students at Glendale Community College in Glendale, Arizona were surveyed on their use of dial-up access to electronic databases provided by libraries. In addition, the community college and public libraries in Maricopa County were surveyed to determine which electronic databases they provide by dial-up access. Comparison between these two forms of data collection revealed that a rich variety of electronic databases are available to community college students. Many of the students have the equipment required to take advantage of these resources, combined with a desire to use these resources to increase the flexibility of their options for performing research. The greatest barrier to use was a lack of realization that such resources were available. Community college libraries should advertise access information to make students aware of these options.

Porter, Brandi. « Information Retrieval Strategies of Millennial Undergraduate Students in Web and Library Database Searches ». NSUWorks, 2009. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/357.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Millennial students make up a large portion of undergraduate students attending colleges and universities, and they have a variety of online resources available to them to complete academically related information searches, primarily Web based and library-based online information retrieval systems. The content, ease of use, and required search techniques are different between the two information retrieval systems. Students often prefer searching the Web, but in doing so often miss higher quality materials that may be available only through their library. Furthermore, each system uses different information retrieval algorithms for producing results, so proficiency in one search system may not transfer to another. Web based information retrieval systems are unable to search and retrieve many resources available in libraries and other proprietary information retrieval systems, often referred to as the Invisible Web. These are resources that are not available to the general public and are password protected (from anyone not considered to be an affiliated user of that particular organization). These resources are often licensed to libraries by third party vendors or publishers and include fee-based access to content. Therefore, many millennial students may not be accessing many scholarly resources available to them if they were to use Web based information retrieval systems. Investigation of how millennial students approach searches for the same topic in both systems was conducted. The goal was to build upon theory of why students search using various techniques, why they often choose the Web for their searches, and what can be done to improve library online information retrieval systems. Mixed qualitative methods of data gathering were used to elicit this information. The investigation showed that millennial undergraduate students lacked detailed search strategies, and often used the same search techniques regardless of system or subject. Students displayed greater familiarity and ease of use with Web based IR systems than online library IR systems. Results illustrated suggestions for search design enhancements to library online information retrieval systems such as better natural language searching and easier linking to full text articles. Design enhancements based on millennial search strategies should encourage students to use library-based information retrieval systems more often.

As Leeds Metropolitan is a university of festivals and partnerships, the library was given the opportunity this year to host a festival to promote the library and all its services to the university. The library festival was a week of events and activities to promote the library and its space in new ways. It was a good way to remind staff and students of the value of libraries, not only as places to learn but also as places to enhance our leisure and working lives ... we chose to promote the database `Land of Lost Content¿. This was because graphic design and art students are based at our campus and we also thought this database would attract a wide range of students who might otherwise think that electronic databases contain little of interest for them. Our promotion has been so successful in many ways that we would like to share our experience with other librarians.

Hannigan, Gale G. « MEDLINE Metric : A method to assess medical students' MEDLINE search effectiveness ». Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2526/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Medical educators advocate the need for medical students to acquire information management skills, including the ability to search the MEDLINE database. There has been no published validated method available to use for assessing medical students' MEDLINE information retrieval skills. This research proposes and evaluates a method, designed as the MEDLINE Metric, for assessing medical students' search skills. MEDLINE Metric consists of: (a) the development, by experts, of realistic clinical scenarios that include highly constructed search questions designed to test defined search skills; (b) timed tasks (searches) completed by subjects; (c) the evaluation of search results; and (d) instructive feedback. A goal is to offer medical educators a valid, reliable, and feasible way to judge mastery of information searching skill by measuring results (search retrieval) rather than process (search behavior) or cognition (knowledge about searching). Following a documented procedure for test development, search specialists and medical content experts formulated six clinical search scenarios and questions. One hundred and forty-five subjects completed the six-item test under timed conditions. Subjects represented a wide range of MEDLINE search expertise. One hundred twenty complete cases were used, representing 53 second-year medical students (44%), 47 fourth-year medical students (39%), and 20 medical librarians (17%). Data related to educational level, search training, search experience, confidence in retrieval, difficulty of search, and score were analyzed. Evidence supporting the validity of the method includes the agreement by experts about the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully retrieve information relevant to a clinical question from the MEDLINE database. Also, the test discriminated among different performance levels. There were statistically significant, positive relationships between test score and level of education, self-reported previous MEDLINE training, and self-reported previous search experience. The findings from this study suggest that MEDLINE Metric is a valid method for constructing and administering a performance-based test to identify mastery in searching the MEDLINE database. The test's reliability needs to be established.

Résumé :
The use of bring your own devices (BYOD) is a global phenomenon, and nowhere is it more evident than on a college campus. The use of BYOD on academic campuses has grown and evolved through time. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to identify the successful strategies used by chief information officers (CIOs) to mitigate information technology infrastructure demands produced by student BYOD usage. The diffusion of innovation model served as the conceptual framework. The population consisted of CIOs from community colleges within North Carolina. The data collection process included semistructured, in-depth face-to-face interviews with 9 CIOs and the analysis of 25 documents, all from participant case organizations. Member checking was used to increase the validity of the findings. During the data analysis phase, the data were coded, sorted, queried, and analyzed obtained from semistructured interviews and organizational documentation with NVivo, a qualitative data analysis computer software package. Through methodological triangulation, 3 major themes emerged from the study: the importance of technology management tools, the importance of security awareness training, and the importance of BYOD security policies and procedures. These themes highlight successful strategies employed by CIOs. The implications for positive social change as a result of this study include creating a more positive experience for students interacting with technology on campus. Effects on social change will also arise by increasing a student's mindfulness through security awareness programs, which will empower the student to take more control of their online presence and as they pass that information along to family and friends.

At an era of information explosion, a lof of datas we could analysis. In order to solve this problem, the technology of data mining used to deal with the big data. How to apply the technology of data mining to explore the real necessary information that is the key points during search we want to know. In this study, data were collected form interest inventory of Career&Competercy Assessement Network (UCAN) and the survey system of students graduated after one year. Those students were studied on 2008-2010 year in M university. Using the database builded a model with data mining, and predict the accuracy of the model. In addition, in this study we were combined with the John Holland’s theory (1985). There were compared that combined with the actual carrer after that survey system of students graduated after one year. In study, we dicovening something. First, that accuracy with use the data mining to build a model was better than UCAN database. And then the accuracy of model combined with Holland’s theory would more better. Second, we discovered the relationship between the interest inventory, divided into 16 career types UCAN database and 6 career type of Holland’s theory. After analysis the data, could found some topic and some types with strong relationship.

Résumé :
This thesis presents a data mining methodology to analyze the careers of University students, where a career is the ordered sequence of the exams taken by the single student. We present different models based on clustering, classification and sequential pattern techniques in order to understand and improve the performance of students and the scheduling of exams. We introduce an ideal career as the career of an ideal student which has taken each examination just after the end of the corresponding course, without delays. We then compare the career of a generic student with the ideal one by using these different techniques. Finally, we apply the methodology to a real case study and interpret the results which underline that the more students follow the order given by the ideal career the more they get good performance in terms of graduation time and final grade. We also analyze the career of university students from another point of view, that is, we can study the perspective of each course, by analyzing the distribution of students with respect to the delay with which they take an examination, to discover common characteristics between two or more courses. This is done in terms of Poisson distributions.

Disciplinary assessment for the middle grades of students of primary schools usually has regular tests and three section tests, which are recoded only by scores transitionally. Therefore, it can only roughly learn the child's achievement of certain subjects, but it cannot know in detail in which aspects of the type of learning students are weak, no mentioning to provide teachers with systematic learning and remedial teaching. In addition to their teaching subjects, the mentor cannot clearly understand the learning performance of students in other subjects. In addition to the regular test scores and the section exam scores returned by the students to judge the learning performance of schoolchildren in school, the parents cannot be possible to learn more about the performance of children in school in more efficient ways. In addition, the family background is an important factor affecting the learning performance of students. Family background information is used for counseling in the past, and academic assessment results are academic. These two data are separated for discussion, so teachers cannot immediately see the two relevant information. Therefore, in order to effectively manage the learning achievement and family background information of the class, this study uses the cloud technology combined with the database to design a set of student learning assessment management system suitable for the primary school teachers. Combining the family background information can be more effective in mastering the learning situation of children, and giving behavioral remedies or remedial teaching in accordance with their status. This system can also provide teachers and parents of students through the Internet with learning the learning performance of children so to give immediate assistance or encouragement and achieve the effectiveness of parent-child cooperation.

In recent years, more and more diverse and complex field of teaching, how to balance the individual differences of every student, and take care of every student are the most important goal and the most worry for the teachers every day. In order to keep students in the classroom not to become the guests, it must understand students background, and continue to review the status of student learning in the learning process through formative assessment to give the opportunity to remedy the timeliness of learning, so teachers can review the effectiveness of learning by students and whether their teaching methods need to be adjusted. This study developed through database the students' Language Sciences, Humanities and systems to record student achievement assessment, which on the one hand can reduce the likelihood of the traditional manual paper registration loss, and on the other hand can be a lot of assessment results electronically to facilitate any branch teachers to view student learning outcomes in a short time, and with the student's academic background give appropriate remedial teaching resources. In addition, with the advent of the era of low birth rate, and the degree of parental involvement in school education rising, through the cloud technology at any time it can view their children's learning success to make parents and teachers have one more communication pipe. Teachers can use Drive, which records the student's test performance in the system, to analyze statistics via the system and immediately spread to the cloud to enable sharing so to let any teachers and parents to immediately grasp the assessment of each child in the class stage performance and immediately to give relief and reserved. With co-operation between teachers and parents, students will be able to effectively enhance learning outcomes.

This study presents a student remedial learning management system, and hopes to improve the current situation of low student achievement, resulting in loss of willingness to learn; and it also narrow the extent of gap between students in the class, so the original low-achieving children can learn to enjoy the fun of learning; and it also allows busy parents to keep track of the current situation of students through the system. System architecture itself uses cloud computing technology as the back-end development to design a remedial learning system to import e-learning courses whose data exist in the database, so teachers and parents can keep track of students’ progress and achievement. Advances in technology are to meet human needs, and Cloud Computing is a big shift changes after from large-scale to the client – server computers. Users neither need to understand the "cloud" infrastructure details, nor have sufficient expertise to operate directly, so users can freely and flexibly operate through cloud computing to meet the increasing users’ demand. Therefore, the application of cloud technology really has been integrated into our lives. Keywords: remedial teaching, clouds, education learning, mobile Interne

Due to advances in economic, technology and medicine, the way human live is different from the old days, so it makes the disease patterns in Taiwan change gradually to high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases which are the main cause of death. The occurrence of these chronic diseases, except a small part caused from genetic factors, most are closely related to people’s lifestyle. Because students have obesity problems, their health examinations detect early signs of cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure; teenagers who have a sedentary style in front of the computer screen may lead to cardiovascular disease and diabetes due to lack of exercise. In the basic education stage of an elementary school, health center records student health information, and, in addition, the Ministry of Education Promotes campaign of three-three-three for sports groups record student movement. However, there is information exchange and analysis between these two, so the health plan promoted by discipline group does not cover planning issues for students to meet learning needs. Therefore, promoting the health of students will not be able to achieve substantial help. In this study, database and the cloud technology are integrated to establish a database for students family history, lifestyle and health information and design a user-friendly interface management system for school administrators to facilitate access to student information to replace the old paper card record mode and to input in real-time student health information, which will help data analysis for a family history and lifestyle for the teacher to promote health and arrange curriculum courses to meet the health needs of the students. In addition, this data can be instantly uploaded to Google Drive, so that parents can grasp through the various devices that can login internet the students' daily lifestyle and health-related lines anytime and anyplace. And by parents and teachers and parent-child communications it will give timely encouragement and correctness so that between parents, teachers and students it work together to lay the foundation for students' health.

Due to the lack of a national high school contact book, this study proposed to add a contact book of students to have learning and behavior management in the school system. Generally, national school contact books often flow in copying homework and preparing for the exam topics. However, under the living conditions, students are reluctant to share life at school and inner thoughts with teachers and parent, so students are often perfunctory, which will lose the most important function of contact books. A contact book not only just transcribes the recording, but it also is an important channel for the interaction, communication, emotional communication between parents, teachers and students... In rural areas with limited resources, to fully promote electronic contact book has its difficulties, but it is not acceptable to most of the family. And unlike previous reforms which are not easy to succeed, it is done in a progressive way to change it over; traditional contact books use database integrated with cloud computing to record learning and behavior of students at school daily. By using video, it can also show students’ performance, special events, etc. and understand the students' lives so to generate the topics and have possibility of communication.
