Résumé :
How do people perceive and communicate structure? We investigate this question by letting participants play a communication game, where one player describes a pattern, and another player redraws it based on the description alone. We use this paradigm to compare two models of pattern description, one compositional (complex structures built out of simpler ones) and one noncompositional. We find that compositional patterns are communicated more effectively than noncompositional patterns, that a compositional model of pattern description predicts which patterns are harder to describe, and that this model can be used to evaluate participants’ drawings, producing humanlike quality ratings. Our results suggest that natural language can tap into a compositionally structured pattern description language.

Résumé :
Vocal communication systems have a set of rules that govern the arrangement of acoustic signals, broadly defined as ‘syntax’. However, there is a limited understanding of potentially shared or analogous rules across vocal displays in different taxa. Recent work on songbirds has investigated syntax using network-based modelling. This technique quantifies features such as connectivity (adjacent signals in a sequence) and recurring patterns. Here, we apply network-based modelling to the complex, hierarchically structured songs of humpback whales ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) from east Australia. Given the song's annual evolving pattern and the cultural conformity of males within a population, network modelling captured the patterns of multiple song types over 13 consecutive years. Song arrangements in each year displayed clear ‘small-world’ network structure, characterized by clusters of highly connected sounds. Transitions between these connected sounds further suggested a combination of both structural stability and variability. Small-world network structure within humpback songs may facilitate the characteristic and persistent vocal learning observed. Similar small-world structures and transition patterns are found in several birdsong displays, indicating common syntactic patterns among vocal learning in multiple taxa. Understanding the syntactic rules governing vocal displays in multiple, independently evolving lineages may indicate what rules or structural features are important to the evolution of complex communication, including human language.

Résumé :
The subject of this investigation is light diffraction from a structure formed at the lateral projection of structured light on the surface of a 3D object. It is demonstrated that the patterns of vertically structured light fringes change their structure during the lateral illumination of a 3D object, and take on the properties of holograms. The diffraction of light from this structure forms several diffraction orders, and one of them can restore the image of the 3D object. Results of the numerical experiment demonstrating the possibility to restore 3D holographic images by these patterns at a wavelength corresponding to Bragg conditions are presented. The obtained result allows an order of magnitude higher compression of the holographic information about a 3D object to be transmitted along the communication channel, in a volume that is sufficient for visual perception, and for the observation of both the horizontal and vertical continuous parallax. Results of the experiments on the transmission of this compressed information are presented to demonstrate that the TV frame rate frequency of the 3D holographic video sequence is quite achievable.

Résumé :
Most database textbooks on conceptual modeling do not cover domainspecific patterns. The texts emphasize notation, apparently assuming that notation enables individuals to correctly model domain-specific knowledge acquired from experience. However, the domain knowledge acquired may not aid in the construction of conceptual models if it is not structured to support conceptual modeling. This study uses the Resources Events Agents (REA) pattern as an example of a domain-specific pattern that can be encoded as a knowledge structure for conceptual modeling of accounting information systems (AIS), and tests its effects on the accuracy of conceptual modeling in a familiar business setting. Fifty-three undergraduate and forty-six graduate students completed recall tasks designed to measure REA knowledge structure. The accuracy of participants' conceptual models was positively related to REA knowledge structure. Results suggest it is insufficient to know only conceptual modeling notation because structured knowledge of domain-specific patterns reduces design errors.

Résumé :

Morphology and Syntax are very important studies in learning English. Morphology learns about how the words are structured and how they are put together from smaller part. It can be considered as the grammar of words. Meanwhile, Syntax discusses how the sentence is structured. The objectives of the research are to find out inflectional morphemes, derivational morphemes, and the patterns of clause structure which are found in political news on online Tempo in January 2019. This research used qualitative design and content analysis design where the source of data was article political news on Online Tempo in January, 2019. The major instrument of this research is the researchers themselves because they actively obtained and clustered the data and the secondary data was data sheet. The findings revealed three types of morphosyntactic, firstly, the researchers found 5 patterns of inflectional morpheme with 26 words. The most dominant pattern of inflectional morpheme was singular changing to the plural. Secondly, for derivational morpheme, it identified two types of classes including class-changing and class-mantaining. There were 3 patterns with 10 words in class-changing and 1 pattern with 1 word in class-mantaining. The study also showed that the common pattern of derivational morpheme was class-changing pattern (verb to noun). Thirdly, there were 7 patterns with 15 clauses that were used in political news. The result of this study proved that the dominant pattern of clause structure was S-V- to Infinitive pattern with 4 clauses.

Résumé :
This paper describes a domain independent approach for automatically constructing information extraction patterns for semi-structured web pages. Given a randomly chosen page from a web site of similarly structured pages, the system identifies a region of the page that has a regular "tabular" structure, and then infers an extraction pattern that will match the "rows" of the region and identify the data elements. The approach was tested on three corpora containing a series of tabular web sites from different domains and achieved a success rate of at least 80%. A significant strength of the system is that it can infer extraction patterns from a single training page and does not require any manual labeling of the training page.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The present dissertation develops, applies and evaluates a novel method for the representation and retrieval of patterns in musical data. The method supports the typical polyphonic patterns that one finds in music theory textbooks. Most current computational methods to musical patterns are restricted to monophony (one melody at a time). The Structured Polyphonic Patterns method (SPP) applies to the general case of polyphonic music, where many melodies may unfold concurrently. Pattern components are conjunctions of features which encode properties of musical events, or relations that they form with other events. Relations between events that overlap in time but are not simultaneous are supported, enabling patterns to express key temporal relations of polyphonic music. Patterns are formed by joining and layering pattern components into sequences (horizontal structures) and layers (vertical structures). A layer specifies voicing in an abstract way, and the exploration of different voice permutations is handled automatically. The SPP method also provides a mechanism for defining new features. We evaluate SPP by developing a small catalog of musicologically relevant queries and analyzing the results on four corpora: 185 chorale harmonizations by J.S. Bach, Mozart Symphony no. 40, a small set of piano pieces by Chopin, and a collection of folk songs containing more than 8000 pieces – in addition to its size, demonstrating the scalability of the method, that latter corpus is interesting as it shows that SPP is also usable for monophony. Examining several corpora allows us to establish that some polyphonic patterns constitute salient properties of a corpus: they are over-represented in one corpus by comparison to the others. In addition, the queries we develop demonstrate that the SPP method possesses sufficient expressiveness to capture important music-theoretic notions. At the same time, we show how the method is more restrictive than some existing polyphonic pattern representations, hence providing a better approximation of the expressive power required for polyphonic patterns. It is a better candidate representation for music data mining, a difficult problem that has received significant attention for the monophonic case, but limited attention for the more general polyphonic case.

Résumé :
This thesis discusses the development of a 3D reconstruction system based on active stereoscopy with structured lighting. The proposed system accomplishes 3D reconstruction of objects using a combination of spatial-neighboring and time-multiplexing structured light patterns encoded with pseudo-random codes. This combination builds upon the concept of marching patterns that can adaptively increase the reconstruction resolution on demand. Original techniques are introduced to recover and validate pseudo-random codes from images using a combination of image processing algorithms. The validation of codes is performed such that potential outliers are minimized and the density of 3D point clouds remains fairly high in the models. Finally, the system simultaneously provides models with color and texture mapping using linear interpolation between vertices which enables a more accurate and intuitive representation of 3D objects. Experimental results presented demonstrate the various reconstruction densities possible with the proposed approach, its performance on objects with different surface properties, and the quality of the colored 3D models achieved.

Résumé :
Spatial segregation among life cycle stages has been observed in many stage-structured species, including species of the flour beetle Tribolium. Patterns have been observed both in homogeneous and heterogeneous environments. We investigate density dependent dispersal of life cycle stages as a mechanism responsible for this separation. By means of mathematical analysis and numerical simulations, we explore this hypothesis using stage-structured, integrodifference equation (IDE) models that incorporate density dependent dispersal kernels. In Chapter 2 we develop a bifurcation theory approach to the existence and stability of (non-extinction) equilibria for a general class of structured integrodifference equation models on finite spatial domains with density dependent kernels. We show that a continuum of such equilibria bifurcates from the extinction equilibrium when it loses stability as the net reproductive number n increases through 1. We give several examples to illustrate the theory. In Chapter 3 we investigate mechanisms that can lead to spatial patterns in two dimensional Juvenile-Adult IDE models. The bifurcation theory shows that such patterns do not arise for n near 1. For larger values of n we show, via numerical simulation, that density dependent dispersal can lead to the segregation of life cycle stages in the sense that each stage peaks in a different spatial location. Finally, in Chapter 4, we construct spatial models to describe the population dynamics of T. castaneum, T. confusum and T. brevicornis and use them to assess density dependent dispersal mechanisms that are able to explain spatial patterns that have been observed in these species.

Résumé :

Alternative stable states have been, based on theoretical findings, predicted to be common in ecological systems. Empirical data from a number of laboratory and natural studies strongly suggest that alternative stable states also occur in real populations, communities and ecosystems. Potential mechanisms involve population size-structure and food-dependent individual development. These features can lead to ontogenetic niche shifts, juvenile recruitment bottlenecks and emergent Allee effects; phenomena that establish destabilising positive feedbacks in a system and hence create alternative stable states.

I studied the consequences of population size-structure for community dynamics at different scales of system complexity. I performed laboratory and ecosystem experiments. Small poecilliid fishes and planktonic invertebrates with short generation times and life spans were used as model organisms. This allowed me to assess the long-term dynamics of the populations and communities investigated.

The main experimental results are: (a) An ontogenetic niche shift in individuals of the phantom midge Chaoborus made the population vulnerable to an indirect competitive recruitment bottleneck imposed by cladoceran mesozooplankton via rotifers. Consequentially the natural zooplankton food web exhibited two alternative attractors. (b) Body size determined the success of Poecilia reticulata invading resident population of Heterandria formosa and thus the type of alternative stable state that established. Small invaders were outcompeted by the residents, whereas large invaders excluded their competitor by predating on its recruits. (c) External juvenile and adult mortality altered the internal feedback structure that regulates a laboratory population of H. formosa in such a way that juvenile biomass increased with mortality. This biomass overcompensation in a prey population can establish alternative stable states with top-predators being either absent or present.

The major conclusion is that size-structure and individual growth can indeed lead to alternative stable states. The considerations of these ubiquitous features of populations offer hence new insights and deeper understanding of community dynamics. Alternative stable states can have tremendous consequences for human societies that utilise the ecological services provided by an ecological system. Understanding the effects of size-structure on alternative stability is thus crucial for sustainable exploitation or production of food resources.

Kirby, Melissa. « The search for structure : an assessment of the benefits of using structured patterns in human spatial memory ». Thesis, University of Leicester, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/40443.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The search for food is directly related to individual fitness, with many cognitive competences thought to be the products of foraging pressures faced by our hominid ancestors. Efficient spatial working memory, which often shows a male advantage, is of particular importance to maximise benefits whilst minimising costs during search. An ability to benefit from spatial structure, which reduces memory load, interestingly shows an inverse relationship with taxonomic distance from humans. Eleven experiments highlighted a propensity to detect and benefit from structure during search, and considered the evolutionary and comparative importance of this high-level cognitive skill. In the first study to disentangle the cognitive and energetic motivations of human search, a preference was found for the reduction of cognitive load by exploiting spatial structure, over the reduction of travelling distance. Further findings suggested that data-reducing strategies exploiting spatial structure may be characteristic of primate cognition. The development of an ecologically valid task based on primate foraging situations, showed a strong tendency in humans to detect and use temporal structure. When adapted for the assessment of older adults and children, older adults were less efficient foragers and showed a deficit in their ability to detect temporal structure, whilst children appeared to show a developmental trend in foraging efficiency. This task afforded a direct comparison between humans and a non-human primate species, which suggested that baboons did not exploit temporal structure during search. The finding that humans show a tendency to promote cognitive over energetic economy, and a strong proficiency to benefit from structure in stimuli, has implications for the evolution of this competency, the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and sex differences in spatial memory. These findings have implications for theories which suggest that diet and the requirements of foraging played an important role in the high-level cognition humans possess today.

Résumé :
Structured-light (SL) sensing techniques have been emerging as a popular non-contact optical method for 3D surface profiling of complex objects in manufacturing inspection applications. The measured object is illuminated with sinusoidal phase-shifted projection patterns that are deformed based on the 3D surface profile of the object. To-date, no methodology exists to determine the number of multiple fringe patterns needed in order to improve the measurement accuracy of an SL sensory system. In this paper, we present a novel design methodology that encompasses a detailed procedure for designing the projection patterns in order to minimize system noise and provide accurate 3D measurements. Experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Résumé :
Kinship verification, which is a challenging problem in computer vision and pattern discovery. It has several applications, such as organizing photo albums, recognizing resemblances among humans, and finding missing children. A system for facial kinship verification based on several kinds of texture descriptors (local binary patterns, local ternary patterns, local directional patterns, local phase quantization, and binarized statistical image features) with pyramid multilevel (PML) face representation for feature extraction along with our proposed paired feature representation and our proposed robust feature selection to reduce the number of features. The proposed approach consists of the following three main stages: (1) face pre-processing, (2) feature extraction and selection, and (3) kinship verification. Extensive experiments are conducted on five publicly available databases (Cornell, UB KinFace, Family 101, KinFace W-I, and KinFace W-II). Additionally, a wide experiment for each stage to find the best and most suitable settings. Many comparisons with state-of-the-art methods and through these comparisons, it appears that our experiments show stable and good results.

Résumé :
The aim of this paper is to analyse the mobility of researchers from the six Western Balkan Countries, Albania, Bosnia and Herzego-vina, Kosovo*1, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia (abbr. WB6) within structured regional and European mobility programmes. We want to identify geographical patterns with a view on mobility-based training from the WB6 region to the EU, but also within the WB6 region. The following structured regional European programmes provide the basis for this comparative analysis • CEEPUS • ERASMUS + • Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) • COST

Résumé :
Bio-structures owe their remarkable mechanical properties to their hierarchical geometrical arrangement as well as heterogeneous material properties. This dissertation presents an integrated, interdisciplinary approach that employs computational mechanics combined with flow network analysis to gain fundamental insights into the failure mechanisms of high performance, light-weight, structured composites by examining the stress flow patterns formed in the nascent stages of loading for the rostrum of the paddlefish. The data required for the flow network analysis was generated from the finite element analysis of the rostrum. The flow network was weighted based on the parameter of interest, which is stress in the current study. The changing kinematics of the structural system was provided as input to the algorithm that computes the minimum-cut of the flow network. The proposed approach was verified using two classical problems three- and four-point bending of a simply-supported concrete beam. The current study also addresses the methodology used to prepare data in an appropriate format for a seamless transition from finite element binary database files to the abstract mathematical domain needed for the network flow analysis. A robust, platform-independent procedure was developed that efficiently handles the large datasets produced by the finite element simulations. Results from computational mechanics using Abaqus and complex network analysis are presented.

Tarif, Kheira. Climate Change and Violent Conflict in West Africa : Assessing the Evidence. Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, février 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55163/vhiy5372.

Résumé :
West Africa is widely cited as a hotspot of climate change and insecurity. This SIPRI Insights uses a systematic literature review of academic research to build a better understanding of the relationship between climate change and violent conflict in the region. Its findings are structured around four established ‘pathways’ of climate insecurity: (a) worsening livelihood conditions; (b) increasing migration and changing pastoral mobility patterns; (c) tactical considerations by armed groups; and (d) elite exploitation of local grievances. The literature review highlights a number of important variables in the relationship between climate change and violent conflict in West Africa: maladaptation to livelihood insecurity; migration away from climate-exposed areas; escalating farmer–herder conflicts; and sometimes weak, sometimes divisive, sometimes exploitative governance. Despite these findings, the literature review reveals current research and policy discussions on climate change and violent conflict in West Africa are informed by a very limited amount of academic research.

McKinnon, Mark, Craig Weinschenk et Daniel Madrzykowski. Modeling Gas Burner Fires in Ranch and Colonial Style Structures. UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute, juin 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.54206/102376/mwje4818.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The test scenarios ranged from fires in the structures with no exterior ventilation to room fires with flow paths that connected the fires with remote intake and exhaust vents. In the ranch, two replicate fires were conducted for each room of origin and each ventilation condition. Rooms of fire origin included the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. In the colonial, the focus was on varying the flow paths to examine the change in fire behavior and the resulting damage. No replicates were conducted in the colonial. After each fire scene was documented, the interior finish and furnishings were replaced in affected areas of the structure. Instrumentation was installed to measure gas temperature, gas pressure, and gas movement within the structures. In addition, oxygen sensors were installed to determine when a sufficient level of oxygen was available for flaming combustion. Standard video and firefighting IR cameras were also installed inside of the structures to capture information about the fire dynamics of the experiments. Video cameras were also positioned outside of the structures to monitor the flow of smoke, flames, and air at the exterior vents. Each of the fires were started from a small flaming source. The fires were allowed to develop until they self-extinguished due to a lack of oxygen or until the fire had transitioned through flashover. The times that fires burned post-flashover varied based on the damage occurring within the structure. The goal was have patterns remaining on the ceiling, walls, and floors post-test. In total, thirteen experiments were conducted in the ranch structure and eight experiments were conducted in the colonial structure. All experiments were conducted at UL's Large Fire Laboratory in Northbrook, IL. Increasing the ventilation available to the fire, in both the ranch and the colonial, resulted in additional burn time, additional fire growth, and a larger area of fire damage within the structures. These changes are consistent with fire dynamics based assessments and were repeatable. Fire patterns within the room of origin led to the area of origin when the ventilation of the structure was considered. Fire patterns generated pre-flashover, persisted post-flashover if the ventilation points were remote from the area of origin.
