Résumé :
Peptides play an important role in many fields, including immunology, medical diagnostics, and drug discovery, due to their high specificity and positive safety profile. However, for their delivery as active pharmaceutical ingredients, delivery vectors, or diagnostic imaging molecules, they suffer from two serious shortcomings: their poor metabolic stability and short half-life. Major research efforts are being invested to tackle those drawbacks, where structural modifications and novel delivery tactics have been developed to boost their ability to reach their targets as fully functional species. The benefit of selected technologies for enhancing the resistance of peptides against enzymatic degradation pathways and maximizing their therapeutic impact are also reviewed. Special note of cell-penetrating peptides as delivery vectors, as well as stapled modified peptides, which have demonstrated superior stability from their parent peptides, are reported.

Résumé :
Changes in dimension of concrete due to early-age heat generation, long-term drying shrinkage, and creep under sustained load could lead to significant movements of the concrete structure and lock-up stresses if the movements are restrained. The lock-up stresses are often large enough to cause cracking and water leakage, thereby adversely affecting the serviceability and durability of the structure. Whilst the dimensional changes are quite variable because of their dependence on the environmental conditions and applied loads, they are all related to the concrete mix proportions. Generally, the dimensional stability of concrete can be improved by reducing its cement content and paste volume. Moreover, since the aggregate also shrinks, the dimensional stability can be improved by suppressing the shrinkage of aggregate as well. In this paper, strategies for improving the dimensional stability of concrete are formulated based on experimental research. Test results are presented to demonstrate their effectiveness and applicability.

Résumé :
The article deals with the problems raised in Sergio Mariotti's article on "A warning from the Russian-Ukrainian war: avoiding a future that rhymes with the past". The author supports the proposal for a broader view of the events and for the inclusion of a historical component in the analysis. At the same time, it is argued that a comparative historical analysis might be insufficient to solve such complex problems. The method of ascent from the abstract to the concrete is proposed, which allows considering systemic modern phenomena as a result of the entire previous historical development. On this basis, it is shown that the war in Ukraine is a concrete manifestation of the contradictions of globalization and localization, which historically originated from the common divided labor and reached the apogee of their development in modern times. A hybrid "peace-war" system emerged and the process of changing the world order began based on the transition from industrial-market economy to information-network economy, which naturally increases uncertainties and contradictions. The policy of free trade and the policy of protectionism only are concrete manifestations of the contradictions of globalization and localization. It is shown that as a result of the aggravation of the contradictions of globalization and localization and their specific manifestations, objective tendencies to ensure the national rootedness of the sustainability of economic development arise. The generalization of such trends and their conscious use necessitates the formation of strategies of nationally rooted economic development, which will be relevant until the completion of a new technical and technological system and the formation of an information network based system of socio-economic relations. The article identifies the main features of the strategy of nationally rooted economic development relevant for the current conditions of Ukraine.

Résumé :
Background: Nanocrystallization technologies have been widely studied in recent years, as the formulation of drug nanocrystals solves problems of poor drug solubility and bioavailability. However, drug nanocrystals in the size range of 1–1000 nm usually need to be accompanied by stabilizers, such as polymers or surfactants, to enhance their stability. Despite their simplicity, improved dissolution rate, and enhanced bioavailability, the limited stability of nanocrystal formulations has prevented further development. Objective: The most effective way to handle this instability is to use stabilizers. This paper reviews various factors to consider for the production of stable drug nanocrystals and provides suggestions to overcome the problems associated with instability, such as aggregation and Ostwald ripening. Through various examples of stabilizers acting via electrostatic and steric stabilization, this review highlights the scope of enhancing the stability of drug nanocrystals. Conclusion: Studies on stabilizers used in the production of drug nanocrystals are ongoing; various factors, such as the effect of zeta potential on the stability of drug nanosuspensions, have already been revealed. However, it is necessary to determine the most appropriate stabilizer experimentally based on the various mechanisms and factors have been reviewed since the possible interactions between each drug and stabilizer are diverse.

Résumé :
The global decline of mutualists such as pollinators and seed dispersers may cause negative direct and indirect impacts on biodiversity. Mutualistic network models used to understand the stability of mutualistic systems indicate that species with low partner diversity are most vulnerable to coextinction following mutualism disruption. However, existing models have not considered how species vary in their dependence on mutualistic interactions for reproduction or survival, overlooking the potential influence of this variation on species' coextinction vulnerability and on network stability. Using global databases and field experiments focused on the seed dispersal mutualism, we found that plants and animals that depend heavily on mutualistic interactions have higher partner diversity. Under simulated network disruption, this empirical relationship strongly reduced coextinction because the species most likely to lose mutualists depend least on their mutualists. The pattern also reduced the importance of network structure for stability; nested network structure had little effect on coextinction after simulations incorporated the empirically derived relationship between partner diversity and mutualistic dependence. Our results highlight a previously unknown source of stability in mutualistic networks and suggest that differences among species in their mutualistic strategy, rather than network structure, primarily accounts for stability in mutualistic communities.

Résumé :
L-asparaginase has garnered significant attention for its potential therapeutic applications in cancer treatment, as well as its role in mitigating acrylamide in the food industry. However, the widespread implementation of free L-asparaginase in industrial processes has faced substantial obstacles, primarily attributed to issues such as reduced stability, high production costs, and limited recyclability. In order to address these challenges and fully unleash the capabilities of L-asparaginase, the current investigation was centered on the exploration of L-asparaginase immobilization derived from Ganoderma australe GPC191. The various immobilization matrices were assessed, including gelatin, agarose, agar, and combinations thereof with sodium alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and calcium phosphate. These matrices were evaluated based on critical parameters such as enzyme activity after immobilization, loading efficiency, recyclability, and storage stability. Among the diverse matrices considered, the alginate-gelatin-calcium phosphate capsules emerged as the best, exhibiting remarkable characteristics such as an enzyme activity of immobilized L-asparaginase at 60.43 U/mL, an impressive loading efficiency of 94.82%, sustained recyclability with 51% stability even after 16 cycles, and a storage efficiency only reducing to 27% at six months. These outstanding attributes position them as a promising choice for industrial applications. The encouraging outcomes of this investigation could be further refined through research into the effects of altering the concentrations of matrix components, shedding light on how these adjustments influence enzyme properties and their interactions with the external environment.

Résumé :
Is cooperation without central authority stable? If so, how robust is it? Despite what might be the conventional wisdom, The Evolution of Cooperation did not solve this problem deductively. In fact, results obtained later by others seem to have contradicted the book's main message. Reexamining this exceptionally influential work yields a new picture. Part of Axelrod's evolutionary story turns out to be false. But the main intuition, that retaliatory strategies of conditional cooperation are somehow advantaged, proves correct in one specific and significant sense: Under a standard evolutionary dynamic these strategies require the minimal frequency to stabilize. Hence, they support the most robust evolutionary equilibrium: the easiest to reach and retain. Moreover, the less efficient a strategy, the larger is its minimal stabilizing frequency; Hobbesian strategies of pure defection are the least robust. Our main theorems hold for a large class of games that pose diverse cooperation problems: prisoner's dilemma, chicken, stag hunt, and many others.

Résumé :
Viruses are known to have some of the highest and most diverse mutation rates found in any biological replicator, with single-stranded (ss) RNA viruses evolving the fastest, and double-stranded (ds) DNA viruses having rates approaching those of bacteria. As mutation rates are tightly and negatively correlated with genome size, selection is a clear driver of viral evolution. However, the role of intragenomic interactions as drivers of viral evolution is still unclear. To understand how these two processes affect the long-term evolution of viruses infecting humans, we comprehensively analyzed ssRNA, ssDNA, dsRNA, and dsDNA viruses, to find which virus types and which functions show evidence for episodic diversifying selection and correlated evolution. We show that selection mostly affects single stranded viruses, that correlated evolution is more prevalent in DNA viruses, and that both processes, taken independently, mostly affect viral replication. However, the genes that are jointly affected by both processes are involved in key aspects of their life cycle, favoring viral stability over proliferation. We further show that both evolutionary processes are intimately linked at the amino acid level, which suggests that it is the joint action of selection and correlated evolution, and not just selection, that shapes the evolutionary trajectories of viruses—and possibly of their epidemiological potential.
