Andrea Curami (1947-2010) č stato docente di Meccanica applicata e di altre materie al Politecnico di Milano, esperto di motori e di automobilismo, storico delle vicende militari ed economiche italiane tra Ottocento e seconda guerra mondiale. Si č occupato anche di storia dei trasporti e ha promosso le ricerche di un gruppo di studiosi riunito attorno a sé. A partire dagli studi sull'aeronautica, ha sviluppato un'analisi originale dell'industria bellica italiana, coniugando storia delle vicende militari e storia economica e della tecnologia, ponendo al centro i rapporti tra committenza pubblica e un mondo dell'industria, continuamente oscillante tra innovazione e sfruttamento delle risorse pubbliche, che progressivamente si afferma quale componente decisiva della classe dirigente. Curami ha in particolare studiato la Grande guerra quale snodo cruciale di questo processo, e il riarmo fascista, quando l'industria č in grado di imporre alle forze armate mezzi spesso obsoleti e inadeguati. Del riarmo fascista e della mancata mobilitazione nel secondo conflitto mondiale egli propone un modello interpretativo nel quale l'analisi tecnica diviene funzionale alla comprensione delle politiche seguite dalle imprese, con un'interpretazione originale dei rapporti tra forze armate, politica e grande industria.

Le esperienze di autogestione o, in altre parole, la gestione democratica e la partecipazione autonoma dei lavoratori nell'organizzazione del lavoro e della produzione, hanno una storia antica in Brasile. Tuttavia, quelle esperienze rimasero marginali nello sviluppo sociale brasiliano e nel movimento operaio durante il ventesimo secolo. Esse sono (ri)apparse negli ultimi decenni nel contesto di profondi cambiamenti della societŕ brasiliana, concernenti specialmente la struttura del lavoro e il modello di sviluppo economico e produttivo, cosě come la societŕ civile brasiliana, marcata da un consolidamento dei movimenti sociali dall'emergere di nuovi attori nell'arena pubblica. Questo articolo intende analizzare le condizioni che hanno permesso la ricomparsa di esperienze di autogestione, introducendo la storia recente di esse e la loro rilevanza per il modo del lavoro brasiliano.

Il centro siderurgico di Taranto ha avuto e ha una grande importanza nella storia industriale italiana. A esso sono stati dedicati studi approfonditi. In queste pagine, ripercorrendo quanto emerge da tali studi così come dalla più recente storiografia sull'impresa pubblica in Italia e sull'Iri, si proporranno alcune considerazioni sul ruolo della siderurgia nell'economia italiana, sulla parabola delle partecipazioni statali e il loro rapporto con la politica, sulle politiche perseguite nel secondo dopoguerra per ridurre i divari tra Nord e Sud. Si guarderà anche ai contenuti e ai toni del dibattito pubblico su tali questioni. Le scelte di volta in volta compiute e le diverse posizioni assunte saranno storicamente contestualizzate. Molti degli interrogativi che questa storia solleva hanno ancora oggi bisogno di risposte adeguate ai tempi.

IntroduzioneIl concetto di «interesse» o «interessi» è uno dei piò centrali e controversi in economia e, piò in generale, nelle scienze sociali e nella storia. è anche un concetto con molti sensi, per non dire ambiguo, e il suo significato ha subito via via grossi spostamenti. Da quando è entrato nel linguaggio comune di diversi paesi europei, attorno alla metà del XVI secolo, come termine di derivazione latina (intérêt, interest, ecc.), il concetto ha indicato le forze fondamentali, basate sulla spinta dell'autoconservazione e all'auto-accrescimento, che motivano o dovrebbero motivare le azioni del principe o dello Stato, dell'individuo, e poi di gruppi di persone che occupano una posizione sociale o economica omogenea (classi, gruppi d'interesse). Quando è riferito all'individuo, il concetto ha assunto talvolta un significato assai ampio, inglobando per esempio l'interesse per l'onore, la gloria, l'amor proprio, e persino per l'aldilà. In altre epoche, al contrario, si è limitato ad indicare esclusivamente la ricerca di un vantaggio economico. In maniera analoga, l'espressione « perseguire i propri interessi» può ricoprire — fino ad essere una tautologia — tutto l'insieme delle azioni umane, ma spesso servirà, piò utilmente, ad indicare un modo specifico o stile di condotta, variamente concepito come azione « razionale » o « strumentale». Anche la stima in cui è tenuto il comportamento motivato dall'interesse ha subito considerevoli variazioni. Il termine entrò originariamente in uso, già alla fine del Medioevo, come eufemismo inteso a rendere rispettabile una data attività, quella di percepire un interesse sui prestiti, da tempo considerata contraria alla legge divina e conosciuta come il peccato dell'usura. Nella sua accezione piò ampia, ha acquistato talvolta un grande prestigio come chiave di un ordine sociale realizzabile, pacifico e progressista. E tuttavia è stato anche attaccato come concetto che degrada lo spirito umano ed è suscettibile di distruggere e di corrodere pericolosamente le fondamenta della società. Indagare su questi molteplici significati e su queste molteplici valutazioni significa di fatto esplorare buona parte della storia economica e in particolare della storia delle dottrine economiche e politiche occidentali nell'arco degli ultimi quattro secoli.

- Reflects on how political changes that have taken place in the People's Republic of China (Prc) during the era of economic reform, together with changes that have taken place in the world at large since 1989, especially those following the collapse of Communism in Europe, have shaped the way in which historians inside and outside the Prc have written the history of the Mao era (1949 to 1976). The article examines both Chinese and western historiography of four key issues relating to the Mao era: the idea of the 1950s as a "golden age"; the Great Leap Forward (1958-61); the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and the view of Mao himself. The more negative representation of these issues derives, in part, from the fact that scholars now have much greater access to sources than was true prior to the 1980s. At the same time, the more negative representation it is bound up with political changes that have occurred inside and outside the Prc. For that reason, the historiography of the Mao may be said to represent an almost textbook example of the way in which historical writing is implicated in the politics of the present. Il presente studio ha avuto l’obiettivo di documentare la relazione che intercorre tra la fotografia e il Giappone. L’argomento è stato affrontato da un punto di vista storico, a partire dai primi rudimentali scatti fotografici fino all’era del digitale e di Internet. Non è stata esaminata solo la tecnica della fotografia, ma il ruolo della stessa durante la guerra, il suo utilizzo dal punto di vista documentaristico, la sua capacità di influenzare le masse. È stata rivolta particolare attenzione all’ascesa del mercato fotografico nel dopoguerra giapponese e all’emergere di nuove correnti di espressione fotografica, e a come i vari fotografi abbiano usato questo mezzo per dipingere un quadro della società giapponese di quegli anni. In seguito, ho analizzato in che modo il consumismo abbia avuto un ruolo di fondamentale importanza nell’affermazione di un mercato fotografico particolarmente florido come quello giapponese e come la fotografia si sia coniugata con le ultime tecnologie legate al mondo di internet e della tecnologia in generale, e le tendenze che ne sono derivate.

Il presente elaborato ha avuto lo scopo di analizzare il processo evolutivo che ha portato il bilancio europeo ad essere quello che noi oggi conosciamo, partendo dalle sue origini ed osservando tutti i cambiamenti intervenuti sullo stesso anche in relazione al mutare del contesto socioeconomico e culturale. Si sono, inoltre, volute analizzare le prospettive future, per vedere quali saranno gli obiettivi che con lo stesso si vorranno promuovere, mediante la programmazione 2021/2027, in relazione anche all’Agenda 2030, con particolare focus sul Green Deal europeo ed un’attenta analisi sull’impatto che questa pandemia globale di Covid-19 ha avuto sul bilancio e quale sia stata la risposta dell’Unione Europa. Infine, vi sarà una parte dedicata alla governance economica sia dal punto di vista europeo, analizzando gli strumenti impiegati dall’Unione, sia da quello italiano, al fine di valutare come l’Italia si trovi inserita all’interno di questo processo.

• nella mia tesi voglio analizzare, partendo dal caso delle Smalterie Metallurgiche Venete (SMV), come le competenze interne sviluppate nel corso degli anni, ed in generale il capitale intellettuale, abbiano permesso all’azienda di continuare la propria attività nonostante i vari cambi di proprietà e le crisi sopraggiunte nel corso della storia. L’intento è quello di dimostrare come gli intangible assets e, in particolar modo il capitale intellettuale, possano consentire ad un’azienda di superare periodi di crisi e addirittura diventare leader nel proprio settore, come nel caso dell’attuale Baxi. L’approccio storico a partire da un caso concreto mi offre la possibilità di compiere un’analisi accurata e di comprendere l’argomento da tutti i suoi punti di vista, anche quelli più nascosti e di non facile lettura. Consente inoltre di conoscere più da vicino un’impresa che da sola è riuscita a cambiare l’economia di una località come Bassano ed infine di constatare la presenza di uno strumento come gli asset intangibili, al giorno d’oggi molto considerato dal management ma che all’epoca era sconosciuto ai più. Nel corso della mia analisi ho intenzione di trattare anche il tema dell’evoluzione del tessuto economico bassanese in relazione alle competenze generate all’interno delle SMV.

La tesi di laurea contiene un’analisi del settore della gomma dal punto di vista storico ed economico; tale analisi è suddivisa in quattro capitoli. L’analisi economica è volta a descrivere il ruolo della gomma all’interno del rapporto tra economia ed ambiente. Nel primo capitolo viene illustrato il rapporto tra economia ed ambiente focalizzando l’attenzione sulla green economy e sui suoi aspetti teorici e politici ed effettuando un collegamento con il concetto di “esternalità”. Nel secondo capitolo vengono riportati i principali momenti storici che hanno caratterizzato il settore, a partire dall’antichità fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri: viene evidenziato come con il passare dei secoli, in modo parallelo al progresso ed alle idee, è aumentata anche la competitività. Nel terzo capitolo vengono illustrati i principali dati di settore, riguardanti i prezzi delle principali materie prime impiegate, produzione, import ed export. Nel quarto capitolo viene esposta una breve storia dell’attività di Assogomma, la principale associazione delle industrie gommarie italiane e viene dimostrata la sua importanza nel promuovere il commercio nel settore e nell’impegnarsi costantemente in materia di salute, sicurezza ed ambiente; viene inoltre illustrato il ruolo della gomma nel contesto ambientale in diverse applicazioni, esplicitandone i benefici ed i danni, con l’uso dei concetti di “economia circolare” e di “esternalità”.

Il concetto di turismo accessibile, nel corso degli anni, è stato oggetto di continui e lenti mutamenti, soprattutto sotto l'aspetto storico e legislativo. Con il termine “accessibilità” inizialmente si faceva riferimento ad una cerchia ristretta di soggetti, ossia a coloro che avevano difficoltà motorie, sensoriali e intellettuali limitate ma, col tempo, questa terminologia si è estesa, rivolgendosi anche agli anziani, alle donne in gravidanza, ai soggetti con intolleranze alimentari, allergie e molti altri casi ancora. Dopo una breve trattazione storica e legislativa riguardo al tema dell'accessibilità, l'elaborato pone particolare attenzione all'analisi del caso studio di Matera, nominata capitale della cultura del 2019. La “Città dei sassi” - così apostrofata poiché sorge su un affioramento roccioso - si sta preparando infatti ad accogliere numerosi turisti con l’obiettivo di divenire accessibile cercando di limitare, o meglio ancora eliminare, gli ostacoli che impediscono l'accesso a qualsiasi tipo di struttura alle persone diversamente abili. La sfida che la città di Matera si prefissa, pertanto, è quella di abbattere le barriere architettoniche e non solo, trovando delle possibili soluzioni per rendere piacevole e fruibile l'esperienza a tutti i turisti, prendendo in considerazione soprattutto le persone con disabilità, al fine di trasformare la cultura dell'accessibilità in un punto di forza per la città negli anni a venire.

A cinquant’anni di distanza da quando si è cominciato a parlare in modo organico di centri storici, in un periodo caratterizzato da una delle più gravi crisi economiche globali dopo quella del 1929, com’è cambiato il rapporto tra le città e i propri Centri Storici? Come sono visti i centri storici da chi li abita e da chi non li abita? Quale può essere allora il ruolo potenziale delle nuove tecnologie per la tutela e la valorizzazione dei Centri Storici? Le nuove tecnologie possono non solamente cambiare significativamente la qualità di chi abita e vive nei centri storici ma anche aumentare la competitività degli stessi, aumentando così la loro capacità di attrarre risorse umane e finanziarie e favorendone lo sviluppo economico e socio-culturale. Tuttavia, come si coniuga il valore della storia con le mutevoli esigenze della vita contemporanea? Quali le potenziali applicazioni delle nuove tecnologie per il miglioramento della vita nei centri antichi? Il Centro Storico costituisce un ambito territoriale estremamente delicato, con una precisa identità urbanistica e un elevato valore storico e testimoniale riferibile sia al tessuto urbano, sia a elementi del patrimonio edilizio di rilevante valore, sia ai suoi abitanti. Ma può in realtà rivelarsi una risorsa importante in un progetto di trasformazione virtuosa dell'intera compagine urbana, rafforzandone sia l'identità propria che la capacità di attrazione verso l'esterno. E le nuove tecnologie in questo progetto possono assumere un ruolo determinante. Talk about recovery and valorisation of the historic centers can be as timely as ever at a time when, perhaps for the first time, are put into question some settlement and development models principally aimed to the expansion of urban areas. After fifty years since it been started talking about in an organic way of historical centers, in a period characterized by one of the most serious global economic crisis after the one of 1929, as the relationship between the city and its historical centers has changed? As the historical centers are seen by those who live there and those who do not live in them? Which then can be the potential role of new technologies for the protection and valorisation of historical centers? The new technologies can not only significantly change the quality whose inhabits and lives in the historic centers but also increase the competitiveness of the same, thus increasing their ability to attract human and financial resources and promoting the economic development and socio-cultural. However, how it combines the value of history with the changing needs of contemporary life? What are the potential applications of new technologies for the improvement of life in the ancient centers? The historical center constitutes a territorial field extremely delicate, with a specific urban identity and an high historical and testimonial value referable both to the urban texture, both to elements the building heritage of significant value, both to its inhabitants. But it can actually become an important resource in a virtuous transformation project of the whole urban structure, strengthening both the its own identity that the attractiveness to the outside. And the new technologies in this project can play a decisive role.

Abstract The paper presents some results of system analysis of the plutonium utilization alternatives carried out by Russian specialists with an assistance of their European colleagues in the frames of ISTC#369 and #1443 Projects, financially supported by European Commission states. The multi-attribute utility (MAU) model was chose as the methodology for the analysis. For the time being the work is under continuation, but results of the first stage of the study related to conceptual features of the problem can be summed up and discussed. The study made has shown that effective application of a quantitative model to the problem of plutonium utilization is possible provided that political and technical objectives are strictly defined. A realistic base for the scenarios under consideration is general requirement of a principal importance. The principal result of system consideration is the conclusion that transition from the practice of plutonium accumulation and storing to the strategy of plutonium utilization in nuclear reactors is justified under the real Russian conditions. In an economic sense it is justified by the reason that the expenses of reactor conversion to MOX fuel utilization are comparable with those of long-term storing of plutonium, taking into account modern, and especially future, safety requirements. On the non-proliferation criterion, conversion to MOX fuel utilization is also justified, so as in this case the main source of the proliferation risk — the plutonium store, where plutonium is being stored in the forms being the most attractive for the non-authorized usage — is eliminated. At last, conversion to utilization of stored plutonium results in the decrease of radiation risk for staff and population, as well as in the decrease of impact on the environment due to reduction of some stages of the fuel cycle. Ranking of the plutonium utilization alternatives on a base of account economic, non-proliferation and ecological factors has led to reasonable, explicable results. These results were used in “The concept of the Russian Federation on_disposition of weapons plutonium being released in the course of nuclear disarmament”, which was approved as an official document of Ministry of Atomic Energy of Russian Federation. The main approaches of this strategy were changed significantly when comparing with the previous concept of plutonium utilization. One may expect more detailed recommendations to decision makers in course of further elaboration of scenarios and models at the following stages of the study.

Organizations apply two basic competitive strategies in general. These are the cost leadership strategy and the differentiation strategy. The application of any of the mentioned strategies by focusing on a smaller field in the market is called a focus strategy. Companies gain value in the eyes of customer with the strategy they choose. The aim of this study is to analyze the competitive strategies applied by the enterprises and the results of these strategies. A semi-configured interview on the entrepreneurs of two firms which open to a wider market from local market in Denizli with their own brands, was conducted. The first enterprise, which has been maintaining its existence for 80 years and has many branches in the different provinces, is a firm producing sugar and sugar products (Firm A). The second, which has been maintaining its existence for 84 years and has branches in close neighbor cities and provinces, is a firm producing soft drinks (Firm B). The common feature of both firms is that they keep their local characteristics and take their competitive power from the local people. In the research, the competitive strategies of entrepreneurs have been defined and analyzed by benefiting from the entrepreneurship stories that have been brought up to the present day. It was concluded that firm A applied differentiation strategy in the product, production process, and market, while firm B differentiated in the production process without any differentiation in the product and used the focus strategy in the market.

Lo studio qui proposto ha preso l’avvio da due eventi fondamentali per lo sviluppo urbanistico della città di Viterbo, nessuno dei quali possiamo dire costituisca la conseguenza di una politica urbana di indirizzo. Il primo ha decretato, a partire dagli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso, lo spopolamento e il progressivo degrado del centro storico a seguito del vero e proprio esodo verso i nuovi insediamenti di edilizia economica e popolare e soprattutto verso le innumerevoli ville, costruite facendole passare per fabbricati rurali, nelle zone agricole a ridosso della città; il secondo, tuttora in atto, registra una tendenza opposta in virtù dei mutamenti profondi occorsi nel tessuto sociale e della mutata situazione economica. Le scarse disponibilità economiche hanno reso infatti nuovamente appetibili, da parte di nuovi fruitori con scarse possibilità economiche, i numerosi immobili del centro rimasti liberi e in cattive condizioni di manutenzione, dapprima senza operare alcuna alterazione nel tessuto edilizio esistente; quindi è iniziata un’operazione sistematica di portata ben diversa, mirata alla trasformazione in unità abitative minime dei locali situati al livello stradale adibiti un tempo a magazzini e cantine. Esigenze differenti di persone differenti hanno indotto una nuova territorializzazione della città storica. Resta da capire in che misura questo processo sia stato previsto o valutato, e se la costituzione di un tessuto sociale così omogeneo nella struttura possa considerarsi positivamente ai fini del riequilibrio socio-economico complessivo, di cui il problema edilizioabitativo rappresenta solo uno degli aspetti The aim of this paper is to reflect on two major trends concerning the urban development of the city of Viterbo, neither of which appears to stem from a precise urban policy. The first one was the depopulation and progressive decline of the ancient city centre caused by the relocation of the inhabitants towards the new council housing settlements and especially towards the countless new villas, originally intended as farm houses on agricultural land adjacent to the city. The second one, still ongoing, is an opposite trend, the result of profound changes in the social fabric of the society and of the present economic stagnation. Many unoccupied and neglected houses and flats in the city centre are appealing to people with limited financial means, in spite of the lack of upgrading. In addition, basements and cellars are being converted into actual housing units. The needs of the abovementioned people have triggered a new territorialisation of the historic centre. It is yet to be determined to what extent this phenomenon has been contemplated and understood, and whether the rise of such a uniform social fabric should be construed as positive for the general socioeconomic balance, of which the housing issue is only one of the factors.

Abstract Increased production in natural gas from shale reservoirs has sparked concern that greenhouse gas emissions have also been on the rise. As a result, large- and small-scale operators and service companies are enthusiastically supporting a push toward "net carbon zero emissions". Carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) is playing an impactful role in companies’ goals to reach net zero. CO2 sequestration is the process of capturing and storing CO2 emissions from industrial and energy-related sources. Most CO2 sequestration are recommended to locate in saline aquifer, coalbed zone and depleted reservoirs, while CO2 sequestration in shale reservoir could become another good option to minimize the environmental footprint and enhance the gas production. Similar as CO2 sequestration into coalbed methane reservoir, the fluid flow mechanism in shale also includes desorption, diffusion and Darcy's law. In this paper, the effects of CO2 sequestration on shale reservoirs will be discussed from a technical and economical viewpoint. A reservoir simulation was used to evaluate the quantity of CO2 that can be stored in shale, the effects of CO2 mitigation when injected into shale, and any significant opportunities for CO2 enhanced shale gas recovery. Lastly, an economic analysis was performed to evaluate the economic efficiency of such projects in shales.

Abstract This paper demonstrates a pioneering technology adaption for using a membrane-based subsea storage solution for oil/condensate, modified into storing clean energy storage in the form of ammonia (as a hydrogen energy carrier). The immediate application will provide an economical alternative to electrification of offshore platforms, instead of using expensive cables from shore. Storing ammonia at the seabed using innovative subsea storage technologies will dramatically reduce CO2 emissions for offshore assets. The fluid will be stored in a safe manner on the seafloor, protecting both personnel and marine life. The next step will be to include subsea ammonia storage as part of the global logistical value chain, which can power the merchant shipping fleet. Clean ammonia can be produced using renewable resources as wind or solar. It focuses on bridging the ongoing oil/condensate storage qualification, adapted into storing ammonia. The large-scale verification test scope is explained, and we show how the test is extended to also prove the concept of safe energy/ammonia storage. The ammonia storage concept is explained, and we show how this can be included as part of a low carbon future. The focus is the immediate market for providing clean power to existing or new offshore assets. The full system solution will encompass storage tanks placed nearby the platforms at safe water depths, riser systems providing fuel to the ammonia power generators, and the tank filling systems. Bridging and adapting technologies from the petroleum industry into renewables shows the importance of utilizing the technology developments and competence of the oil and gas business. The technical evaluations have shown that the oil/condensate storage can be adapted into storing energy/ammonia with minor modifications. Converting hydrogen into ammonia gives slight energy losses, but it is defended by the large economic benefits of storing ammonia versus pressure storage of hydrogen. The paper presents qualification work already completed and how to implement ammonia fuel storage for platforms. In addition, we show the test setup for a large-scale qualification provided by an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) company together with major Operators. Innovative modular design methods have shown that the concept can be included on existing offshore assets, which have limited topside space available. Adding green or blue ammonia as an alternative to power cables from shore have several benefits, and many of the connecting building blocks are falling into place. The main conclusion is how to adapt Novel technologies from the oil industry to store ammonia in a safe way on the seafloor.

This article presents a critical analysis of all the major pathways to produce hydrogen and to utilize it as an energy carrier to generate heat or electricity. The approach taken is to make a cradle to grave analysis, including the production of hydrogen, the conversion of hydrogen to heat or electricity, and, finally, the utilization of that heat or electricity for a useful purpose. This methodology shows that no currently available hydrogen pathway, irrespective of whether it uses fossil fuels, nuclear fuels, or renewable technology as the primary energy source to generate electricity or heat is as efficient as using the electric power or heat from any of these sources directly. Furthermore, electric vehicles using batteries to store electricity are shown to be more efficient and less polluting than fuel cell powered vehicles using energy stored in hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water.

Storing carbon dioxide (CO2 ) in oil reservoirs as part of CO2 -based enhanced oil recovery (CO2 -EOR) can be a cost-effective solution to reduce emissions into the atmosphere. In this paper, we analyze the economics of this option in order to estimate the amount of CO2 that could be profitably stored in different regions of the world. We consider situations in which the CO2 -EOR operator either purchases the CO2 supplied or is paid for its storage. Building upon extensive data sets concerning the characteristics and location of oil reservoirs and emission sources, the paper focuses on opportunities outside North America. Using net present value (NPV) as an indicator for profitability, we conduct a break-even analysis to relate CO2 supply prices (positive or negative) to economically viable storage potential.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, is executing the Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Feasibility Study coastal storm risk management (CSRM) project for the region. The project is currently in the feasibility phase. The primary goal is to develop CSRM measures that maximize national net economic development benefits. This report documents the coastal storm water level and wave hazard, including sea level rise, for a variety of flood risk management alternatives. Four beach restoration alternatives for Galveston Island and Bolivar peninsula were evaluated. Suites of synthetic tropical and historical non-tropical storms were developed and modeled. The CSTORM coupled surge-and-wave modeling system was used to accurately characterize storm circulation, water level, and wave hazards using new model meshes developed from high-resolution land and sub-aqueous surveys for with- and without-project scenarios. Beach morphology stochastic response was modeled with a Monte Carlo life-cycle simulation approach using the CSHORE morphological evolution numerical model embedded in the StormSim stochastic modeling system. Morphological and hydrodynamic response were primarily characterized with probability distributions of the number of rehabilitations and overflow.

Malawi has made significant progress in improving nutrition outcomes in the past decades. Despite this, the rates of stunting and anaemia remain high and overweight and obesity amongst women is rising. Malawi remains one of the most committed countries to nutrition, ranking 3rd out of 45 African countries on the Hunger and Nutrition Commitment Index, but effective implementation of policies is still challenging. Progress is being inhibited by a lack of dedicated budget lines for nutrition at district level, over reliance on external donors, poor coordination and competing priorities for limited resources within sectoral budgets. The pandemic, climate change and the Ukraine war have disrupted food systems, increased prices of fuel, fertilizer, and food, and caused loss of harvest and livelihoods, threatening to reverse decades of progress. Hundreds of millions of microenterprises in emerging economies face increased competition from the entry and expansion of large firms that offer similar products. This paper studies how one of the worlds most prevalent microenterprises, neighborhood shops, confront competition from convenience chains (e.g., 7-Eleven) in Mexico. To address the endogeneity in time and location of chains store openings, I pair two-way fixed effects with a novel instrument that, at the neighborhood level, shifts the profitability of chains but not of shops. An expansion from zero to the average number of chain stores in a neighborhood reduces the number of shops by 16%. Consistent with the theoretical framework, this reduction is not driven by an increase in shop exit but by a decrease in shop entry. Shops retain their sales of fresh products and 96% of their customers, but customers visit shops less often and spend less on non-fresh and packed goods. I present evidence consistent with shops surviving by exploiting comparative advantages stemming from being small and owner-operated, such as lower agency costs, building relationships with the community, and offering informal credit.

Major changes demand exertions of the imagination. Costa Rica possesses significant challenges in its Nationally Determined Contribution presented in 2020 (NDC 2020), the National Decarbonization Plan, and the National Adaptation Policy; meeting them requires work, commitment, and creative work that enables us to visualize it. These stories offer us a glimpse into the future we aspire to and the future we fear, a glimpse of what is coming and what could come. Costa Rica has the economic and technological conditions for transformation. Having the necessary conversations to promote it is still pending, conversations in which citizens feel involved. With this in mind, we propose these stories as a way to start the discussion and invite us to contemplate what could come and what we could do to build a better future.
