Texte intégralThe dissertation provides a genealogy of the theoretical and conceptual foundations of the black radical tradition through a reconstruction of the political discourse and practices of the main black abolitionists of the Atlantic World from the so-called Age of Revolutions to the end of the American Civil War. In particular, the black radical tradition is conceived as a peculiar critique of modernity. Indeed, black critique highlights the constitutive duplicity of modernity (i.e. European and colonial) and produces both a ‘provincialization’ and a transformation of the basic concepts of modern political thought (such as freedom, equality, democracy, nation). In this way, the research shows that black abolitionism is a political thought characterized by two elements: the subversion of modern spatiality and the “doubling” of political concepts. On the one hand, black abolitionism overturns the conceptual distinction between the State, as the space of order, and the colony, as an irrational and uncivilized place. In other words, it shows that slavery, colonialism, and racism are not peripheral moments of modernity but instead one of its foundations. On the other hand, black abolitionists used different political lexicons to communicate a struggle for self-liberation which had its own conceptual originality. The dissertation is structured in four chapters. The first provides a definition of the theoretical foundations of black radicalism in the XX Century, and is focused on some of its main figures. The other chapters provide a reconstruction of the political thought of black abolitionism, defined by three moments of discontinuity. The second chapter is dedicated to the black abolitionists within the American Revolution and the British abolitionist movement. The third chapter is on the Haitian Revolution, conceived as the fundamental turning point in the history of black abolitionism and its critique of modernity. The last chapter is on the African American abolitionist movement.

Texte intégralThe purpose of the dissertation “Development and practice of Hector Berlioz’s orchestral thought. Poetical features and sound strategies” is to investigate the main traits of Berlioz’s thinking about orchestra by reconsidering the elements of his early education. In particular, the notions acquired from his composition teachers Le Sueur and Reicha and from the medicine courses he briefly attended are examined with a renovated approach, in the light of new lines of study explored by musicology in recent years. Berlioz’s reviews are also analyzed, in the search of elements useful to understand his music through the arguments addressed to others’ music. The dissertation also examines the itinerary of theoretic music literature which, from an initial approach connoted by practice as it was typical in the 18th century, reaches with Berlioz’s treaty a strong poetical connotation of instrumental and orchestral resources. The second part of the dissertation deals with some of Berlioz’s works and with some general issues related to his way of writing for the orchestra, especially in relation to other musical parameters. In the whole discussion, sensible attention is put on the relation between technical and poetical issues, suggesting a quite renovated approach.

Texte intégralMy dissertation offers a survey of contemporary philosophical debates concerning Confucianism with special regard to the hermeneutical discussions about universalistic and relativistic views of Confucian traditions and to the different critical evaluations of the New Confucian Movement; it analyzes some related issues, such as the problem of Chinese cultural identity, the question of the Asian values, the redefinition of the conventional image of the ruxue across more recent critical studies. It also explores some hypothesis of possible interaction between Confucian tradition and modern perspectives in the fields of democracy and human rights. Today’s Confucian Renaissance is portrayed in its various and multifaceted aspects, and is related to the intercultural dimensions of ethical research in our globalized world, with reference to some examples of significant experiences in this domain.

Texte intégralThis dissertations deals with Daniel Bell’s political thought between the post-war era and the Seventies. During these years, Bell’s political reflection appears to be, to say it in the words of Jean-François Lyotard, a «grand narrative» of capitalism. Overall, Bell’s work is a sociological history of capitalism. It points out the height of fordism by assuming the end of ideology, and then sheds light on the post-industrial transformations, looking at the effects produced on power relations and the legitimacy of the socio-political system. In Bell’s view, capitalism is not only an economic system, but a complex social system which places individuals in the power structure by means of subordination and coordination. «What holds a society together?» is the question that go trough the whole trajectory of his reflection. It looks a sociological question, but actually it is a political question, because the order of society depends on the legitimacy of obligation relationships. The link between politics and sociology marks Bell’s thought and shows how social sciences are assumed to be the political theory of modernity: they analyze the political side of social relations as well as the social element inherent to the workings of political institutions. In other words, I look at the way in which Bell, «the sociologist of capitalism» as «The Economist» put it, distinguishes between social power and political power and then makes them interact. Focusing on Bell’s view of power I analyze the transformations occurred in the relationship between State and society in the US during the so-called Golden Age of Capitalism. Particularly, drawing the trajectory of this «grand narrative» of capitalism up to mid-seventies, I highlight that Bell recognizes the coming of a global age, full of political and social strains, and the need of a new institutional scale to cope with them.

Texte intégralBaruzzo, Enrico. « Pensiero e attività pastorale in Elia Dalla Costa ».

Texte intégralThis research discusses the importance of the analysis of the history of political thought (in both Western as well as non-Western thought forums) for the theory of the capabilities approach as founded and theorised by Amartya Sen (economist at the Harvard University) and Martha Nussbaum (philosopher of law at the University of Chicago). It will examine the impact of the history of political theory in Sen’s work which has been strongly influenced by the research of a close alliance between economics and ethics, but this contribution will also examine the most important fields of research of Nussbaum’s own version of the approach that finds its origins in the Ancient Greek and Roman political thought and especially in Aristotle’s ethical and political system. Ideas and institutions regarding education and lifelong learning philosophy have been chosen as a “prism” in order to study the three Western pillars of political theory which are mostly considered by Sen and Nussbaum and in particular: the emergence of the lexicon of positive and social rights; the debate around the nature of citizenship in the contractualist theory and the very debate around educational policies. Furthermore, this work aims to analyse Sen’s and Nussbaum’s endeavour to overcome the culturalist and essentialist conceptions championed especially in the contemporary political thought by considering the importance of non-Western legacies and heritage of political argumentation and reflection about politics in India’s political philosophy both in the ancient (Kautylia and Ashoka) and contemporary (Gandhi and Tagore) thought. Among these contemporary theories in political philosophy, the normative critique of Sen and Nussbaum faces especially multiculturalism, communitarianism, neorealism as well as the theory of “asian values” by remembering the very existence of political reflection in arenas of thought “other” than the West.

Favuzzi, Pellegrino.

Texte intégralThe study aims to provide a contribution to the analysis of the late XIX century political and cultural thinking on the Balkans. It developes through Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the bishop of Đakovo's, actions, speeches, stances, friendships, disagreements, cultural and political influences. Strossmayer's vision is based upon the slav tradition where he was born, and forged in the belonging to the catholic confession. His vision is characterized by the awareness of the value of adopting a thought sometimes intransigent, sometimes blurred in order to preserve the spaces to construct and dialogue with the neighbors. The study is enriched by a critical analysis of the balcanic historiography, and deserves particular attention to the political anc cultural effects this type of narrations produced.

Texte intégralThis thesis is a study and critical analysis of the philosophical work of F. D. Maurice (1805-1872), Anglican priest, first professor of English literature and history at King's College, London, and later professor of morals and theology at Cambridge University. The thesis focuses on Maurice's ideas of conscience and social order, topics which uniquely characterise and best exemplify the divergent and speculative aspects of his thought. After reconstructing Maurice's education, the thesis considers his first writings about ethics and anthropology: these are characterized by a strong critique of both rationalistic subjectivism and the moral scepticism typical of empiricism. As a response Maurice stressed the objectivity of experience and consequent possibility of a genuinely moral knowledge. Then, considering Maurice's political and social works, the research presents an analysis of the basis of human social life, the pedagogic model proposed by the author, and his essays about the mid 19th century historical and political situation. In the same section, as a means of further elucidation, the thesis evaluates Maurice's debate with Henry Mansel about the capacity and the limits of human knowledge. The present study, finally, considers the topic of conscience, placing his thought within the fields of ontology, anthropology, knowledge, and social ethics.

Tosel, Natascia.

Texte intégralThis thesis investigates whether and to what extent regulatory credibility influences the production of eco-innovation. After a selective literature review that analyzes the concept of eco-innovation through the principles of environmental economics, innovation economics, and regulatory economics, we contribute to the current literature by highlighting the role of a specific regulatory feature, that of credibility. Our hypothesis of a positive impact of regulatory credibility on eco-innovation is confirmed by a case study on the European car emissions regulation (1980-2007), which has been carried out by combining a qualitative and a quantitative approach. The findings indicate a common pattern of eco-innovation, which is measured by patent count, and of the credibility of the EU as car emissions regulator. The quantitative analysis estimates a statistically significant and positive impact of our credibility index on eco-innovation. Our conclusion is that the EU and each Member State would benefit from a new focus on building credible regulatory regimes, based on increasing independence from the industry pressure and on high regulatory quality. The consequently perceived stability and efficiency of the regulation is expected to improve the outcome of environmental policies in terms of eco-innovations produced by industry itself.

Texte intégralThe first part of the nineteenth century was a crucial moment for the European context, which was first forced to reckon with the last consequences of the great revolutionary wave, and then - directly - with France's most unscrupulous son; that petit diable arrived from Corsica and become emperor. In these years the Papal States experienced some of the most delicate moments of their existence (suffice it to think of the direct annexation to the French Empire or the deportation of Pius VII), without having the material strength to oppose such vicissitudes. The work carried out by the European representatives in Vienna, during the famous Congress, attempts to implement a “forced” and precarious return to the past, which will prove to be incapable of withstanding the spirit of the new times. The Papal State - this was the new denomination adopted after the great meeting of 1814-1815 (as if to eliminate the aura of sacredness destined to become increasingly uncomfortable in the following decades) - was faced with the urgent need to reorganise its institutional apparatus, aware that it could not definitively cancel the parenthesis of the years that had just passed. In a century that will see the disappearance of the temporal dominion of the popes, it was only one of the challenges with which the State of central Italy was called to confront. In fact, these events took place in a constantly evolving international scenario, where even the great powers were often called upon to deal with unexpected events, but were always attentive to the dynamics of balance and the balancing of interests at stake. For a reality that is not only a state entity, but also the centre of the Catholic world and the seat of the successor of Peter, accepting to change its “nature” is not easy. Allowing lay people access to the upper echelons of the bureaucracy, setting up “truly” representative bodies, or thinking of promulgating a fundamental charter, has been a recurring mirage for years. Although the need to modernise the internal administration of the State is echoed on many fronts, on the administrative, economic and, above all, judicial fronts, the line of intransigence and immobility seems to triumph almost always. It is true that action is sometimes taken, but more out of complacency than real conviction, having to take account of internal and external pressures. Pressure that sometimes comes from increasingly widespread discontent, sometimes from the interference of the large European states. The aim of this research work was therefore to analyse the main (especially legal) events - internal and external - that involved the Church State in the first half of the nineteenth century. A path developed along multiple lines, starting from the background of the great historical events of recent years, and intertwined with the vicissitudes of some great protagonists: popes, secretaries of state, heads of government, monarchs. A look not only at the domestic front, but also at the international one. Understanding how Rome tries to manage its foreign relations in a supranational context that in recent decades has seen the emergence of new states (e.g. Belgium), significant changes (e.g. France in 1830, with the beginning of the Orleanist monarchy, or the independence achieved by the countries of South America), or strong dynastic disputes (e.g. the Iberian Peninsula), is important to understand how it must also deal with governments that, depending on the case, take on markedly conservative characteristics or with strong liberal tendencies. Despite the Roman Curia's natural inclination, “closeness” to reactionary positions, relations with powers such as Russia or Austria don’t remain idyllic. However, the line just described was not the only one followed in the development of this research. As if wishing to proceed on two parallel tracks, we have also focused on the figure and political thought of one of the most important jurists of the first half of the century: Pellegrino Rossi. A jurist of course, although this expression is not enough to encapsulate the greatness of an “Italian son”, born and raised when united Italy did not yet exist. Much has already been said, or rather written, about this multifaceted character, and about his life spent between Italy, Switzerland, France and then back on the peninsula, working at the Roman court as a French representative, and then as a minister of His Holiness. And yet these aspects have been precisely useful in this work, looking at lesser-known but absolutely important aspects. These were, for example, the most important moments Rossi spent in Switzerland (as a member of the Geneva Representative Council and as an envoy to the Diet of Lucerne in 1832), or the major speeches he made at the Chamber of Peers in Paris between 1840 and 1844. The same can be said about the delicate events that involved the jurist during his tenure at the papal court. It was here, first as ambassador, and then as the pivot of the new government formed in September 1848, that the multifaceted Italian tried to shake the Roman State out of its torpor and pull it towards a more modern and truly constitutional order.

Texte intégralThe study reconstructs the stages of the Chinese missionary activity of Father Alfonso Vagnone, which took place between 1605 and 1640. The paper is organized into three parts, divided into five chapters: 1. Training of young Vagnone and subsequent teaching at the Braidense College of Milan. Later, the Jesuit was allowed to go on a mission in China and came to Nanjing in 1605, where, after learning the Chinese language with commitment and dedication, successfully began its work of evangelization. In 1616 he suffered a severe persecution and was expelled from Nanjing. After five years of teaching philosophy and theology at the College of St. Paul in Macao, he returned in mainland China in 1624, resuming his work of evangelization in Jiangzhou. He died on April 9, 1640. 2. Vagnone missionary activity in Jiangzhou. With the help of Thomas Han Duan Lin and Peter Gun, he was the promoter of the spread of Christianity in Shanxi (he is considered the apostle of the evangelization of this province). 3. Study of the works of the Jesuit and, in particular, the pedagogical and ethical thinking expressed in his text Education of Youth. Therefore, the work highlights the most significant aspects of Father Alfonso Vagnone scientific, theological, rhetoric, ethics, and missionary personality.
