Résumé :
In this paper, some vehicle models used for dynamometer test bench are put forward to adapt different performance tests of two-axle vehicle. Firstly, the vehicle driving model with two degrees of freedom is established by analyzing the force condition of a moving vehicle. And it can be used in performance tests which do not need complex road condition, such as acceleration test. Secondly, considering pitching motion of vehicle, the driving model with three degrees of freedom is proposed and applied to performance tests which need complex road condition, like thermal balance test or road simulation experiment. Finally, in order to do steering performance test in dynamometer test bench, the driving model is modified by considering the influence caused by steering and combines steering model to become a whole steering model of vehicle. Those models mentioned above provide theoretical support in dynamometer test bench researching.

Résumé :
Shorter development times, increased standards for vehicle emissions and a greater number of vehicle variants result in a higher level of complexity in the vehicle development process. Efficient development of powertrain and driver assistance functions under comparable and reproducible operating conditions is possible on vehicle test benches. Yet, the realistic simulation of real driving environments on test benches is a challenge. Current test procedures and new technologies, such as Real Driving Emission tests and Autonomous Driving, require a reproducible and even more detailed simulation of the driving environment. Due to this, the simulation of curve driving in particular is gaining in importance. This results from its significant influence on energy consumption and Autonomous Driving functions with lateral guidance, such as lane departure and evasion assistance. Reproducibility can be additionally increased by using a driving robot. At today’s vehicle test benches, pedal and shift robots are predominantly used for longitudinal dynamic tests in the performed test procedures. In order to meet these new test automation requirements for vehicle test benches, the cooperative operation of pedal and steering robots is needed on a test bench setup suitable for this purpose. In this publication, the authors present the setup of a vehicle test bench to be used in automated and reproducible vehicle-in-the-loop tests during steering events. The focus is on the test-bench-specific setup with steerable front wheels, the actuators for simulating the wheel steering torque around the steering axle and the robots used for pedals and steering wheel. Results from various test series are presented and the potential of the novel test environment is shown. The results are reproducible in various test series due to the closed-loop operation without human driving influences at the test bench.

Résumé :
Nowadays, the steering systems dramatically affect several aspects of passenger vehicles: performance, safety, driving pleasure and others suffer this influence. Additionally, differently from other systems, the driver’s perception of the vehicle is greatly possible thanks to the steering wheel; therefore, it explains the more and more interest in their development, having the human factor as the central point. Moreover, the growing diffusion of electric power steering systems, mainly for reasons of efficiency, has contributed to sustain this interest. Indeed, removing the hydraulic circuit in favour of an electric actuation, the energy losses are reduced and consequently the global efficiency of the vehicle increases. In addition, specific control logics can be deployed for different functioning conditions, allowing a perfect integration with ADAS – Advanced Driving Assistance Systems. Unfortunately, all these benefits are counterbalanced by a longer and more demanding process of tuning. Typical developing approaches that make use of test drives have been confined to the last phases of the verification, gradually introducing alternative methodologies, whose core are driving simulators. The reasons lie in the greater complexity, in the higher costs, in the lower level of repeatability and in the time-consuming process of the classic approaches. Driving simulators are complex systems created with the main purpose to exploit and combine the features of advanced software for the characterization of the vehicle dynamics, with the human factor. Typically, the steering behaviour is transmitted to the driver using a so-called feed-back unit, which is a mechatronic device capable of reproducing the resisting torque using an electric motor. To guarantee this result, an advanced steering model must be used because, although the apparent structural simplicity of the steering systems, the inertial and hysteresis effects complicate the modelling phase. In this context it is placed the proposed project, which aims at designing and realizing an experimental test bench for steering systems, capable to introduce a real steering unit in the loop of simulation. The main purpose of this apparatus is the reproduction of the force profiles generated by the tires in contact with the road surface at the tie rods, allowing also the rotation of the uprights around their vertical steering axis. In parallel, a specific steering model has been created, to define a reference point for comparisons to verify the actual benefits brought by the proposed test rig. Furthermore, it was born with a second aim: considering the difficulties in replacing a physical part of the steering rack installed on the test rig, a novel procedure was conceived to speed up the process. It makes use of the model to vary some steering features with a software procedure, which changes the request of tie rods forces without replacing any physical part. It represents a brand new approach for the state of the art.

Investigation of passive steering concepts using MATLAB SIMULINK for their application in a modified Tram 2000 The rail vehicle industry is one of the most traditional and thus also rather conservative industries in mechanical engineering. Nevertheless, alongside innovative topics such as the advancing autonomisation or the establishment of hydrogen fuel cell technologies, there are also concepts for the active guidance of rail vehicles. As a young, up-and-coming startup, we at Traila are developing just such an active steering concept (Traila Active Steering), which, in addition to noise emissions, above all reduces wear in the rail-wheel contact. In our current project phase, we have taken over a tram type T2000 in cooperation with the Zurich Transport Authority (VBZ), with which we can now provide prototypical functional proof of our technology. Within the framework of safety-relevant investigations, passive control concepts as well as active control concepts were examined for the selfdeveloped, actively controlled bogie. In this presentation, different kinematics for passive control are investigated with regard to their adaptation for the Tram 2000, using a specially developed rail-wheel library in MATLAB SIMULINK. In addition to the dynamic investigations on the model, the presentation focuses in particular on an assessment of passive safety with the help of the tools available in MATLAB SIMULINK. It is shown how, based on hydraulic, mechanical, control and external libraries, a domain-spanning multi-physical model is built up as a virtual twin of the T2000, in particular of our modifications, and processed for use in a HIL test bench.
