Résumé :
The monograph proposes theoretical and methodological approaches to analyzing the transformation of the modern social state under the influence of digital technologies that turn it into an" invisible digital platform", and socio-economic factors that contribute to strengthening its role as such. Changes in employment, health, education, and migration policies are considered. Country and regional practices of social transformation are analyzed. The article shows the reflection of social dynamics in the mass consciousness of citizens. Considerable attention is paid to the study of the place of the social agenda in the discussion of the future world order, as well as to finding out possible ways to implement its alternative options.

Gelernter, David. Mirror Worlds. Oxford University Press, 1991. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195068122.001.0001.

Résumé :
Technology doesn't flow smoothly; it's the big surprises that matter, and Yale computer expert David Gelernter sees one such giant leap right on the horizon. Today's small scale software programs are about to be joined by vast public software works that will revolutionize computing and transform society as a whole. One such vast program is the "Mirror world." Imagine looking at your computer screen and seeing reality--an image of your city, for instance, complete with moving traffic patterns, or a picture that sketches the state of an entire far-flung corporation at this second. These representations are called Mirror worlds, and according to Gelernter they will soon be available to everyone. Mirror worlds are high-tech voodoo dolls: by interacting with the images, you interact with reality. Indeed, Mirror worlds will revolutionize the use of computers, transforming them from (mere) handy tools to crystal balls which will allow us to see the world more vividly and see into it more deeply. Reality will be replaced gradually, piece-by-piece, by a software imitation; we will live inside the imitation; and the surprising thing is--this will be a great humanistic advance. we gain control over our world, plus a huge new measure of insight and vision. In this fascinating book--part speculation, part explanation--Gelernter takes us on a tour of the computer technology of the near future. Mirror worlds, he contends, will allow us to explore the world in unprecedented depth and detail without ever changing out of our pajamas. A hospital administrator might wander through an entire medical complex via a desktop computer. Any citizen might explore the performance of the local schools, chat electronically with teachers and other Mirror world visitors, plant software agents to report back on interesting topics; decide to run for the local school board, hire a campaign manager, and conduct the better part of the campaign itself--all by interacting with the Mirror world. Gelernter doesn't just speculate about how this amazing new software will be used--he shows us how it will be made, explaining carefully and in detail how to build a Mirror world using technology already available. we learn about "disembodied machines," "trellises," "ensembles," and other computer components which sound obscure, but which Gelernter explains using familiar metaphors and terms. (He tells us that a Mirror world is a microcosm just like a Japanese garden or a Gothic cathedral, and that a computer program is translated by the computer in the same way a symphony is translated by a violinist into music.) Mirror worlds offers a lucid and humanistic account of the coming software revolution, told by a computer scientist at the cutting edge of his field.

Résumé :
The introductory chapter develops a new understanding of both police and police reform in the post-Soviet context. Departing from the conventional interpretation of the police as merely an institution of coercion, the chapter defines it as a medium for state-society consensus on the limits of the state’s legitimate use of violence. Police reform is, in turn, a never-ending top-down and bottom-up collaboration that may experience both great leaps forward and great setbacks, as opposed to a definite sum of projects. Depending on a country’s specific political context, changing the way the police operate will require some type of revision in how and when the state wields its monopoly on legitimate violence.

Résumé :
This book inquires into Vladimir Putin’s leadership strategy and relies on social identity theory to explain Putin’s success as a leader. The author argues that Russia’s second president has been successful in promoting his image as an embodiment of the shared national identity of the Russian citizens. He has articulated the shared collective perspective and has built a social consensus by tapping into powerful group emotions of shame and humiliation derived from the painful experience of the transition in the 1990s. He was able to overturn these emotions into pride and patriotism by activating two central pillars of the Soviet collective identity: a sense of exceptionalism that the Soviet regime promoted to consolidate the Soviet nation, and a sense of a foreign threat to the state and its people that also was foundational for the Soviet Union. Putin’s assertive foreign policy decisions, culminating in the annexation of Crimea, appeared to have secured, in the eyes of the Russian citizens, their insecure national identity. The top-down leadership and bottom-up collective identity–driven processes coalesced to produce a newly revanchist Russia, with its current leader perceived by many citizens to be irreplaceable. Politics of national identity in Russia are promoted through a well-coordinated media machine that works to focus citizens’ attention on Putin’s foreign policy and on Russia’s international standing. Public fears are played out against the backdrop of Soviet legacies of national exceptionalism and the politics of victimhood associated with the 1990s to conjure a sense of collective dignity, self-righteousness, and national strength to keep the present political system intact.

Ohnuma, Reiko. Mirror for the Buddha. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190637545.003.0006.

Résumé :
The second of three chapters examining animal characters within the life-story of the Buddha, this chapter focuses on the elephant Pārileyyaka, who dwells with and serves the Buddha during a three-month rainy-season retreat, after the Buddha has retreated to the forest in a state of disgust at the quarreling monks of Kosambī. The chapter argues that Pārileyyaka serves as a mirror for the Buddha in various ways, reflecting the Buddha’s status as both consummate Renouncer and consummate Teacher. In addition, the chapter looks at another animal character in one version of the tale—a monkey who parallels the actions of the elephant. The Buddhist imagery surrounding elephants and monkeys is also addressed.
