Résumé :
This research paper focuses on the growth models of new business ventures and their applicability to a specific type of start-up, environmental technology–based growth company via a case study. Start-ups companies are a focal point of interest of this decade. Start-ups develop products and services in conditions of market and technological uncertainty and competitive volatility. Due to their crucial role in the net job creation there is a growing need and interest to understand, model and develop start-ups. One industry of high interest in regards of start-up activity is that of environmental technology business, as it is addressing needs for solving problems related to such global issues as pollution, waste management and need for renewable energy sources. However, there is a very limited amount of prior research focusing specifically to start-up companies in this field. E.g. the growth stage models of start-up companies do not take in account the time dimensions caused by capital and regulatory demands that differentiate the development pace and stages of development of an environmental technology start-up from its peers in other industries. On the other hand, general research of environmental technology businesses often lacks the entrepreneurial and start-up focus, bundling efforts of new ventures in the field together with major projects by established companies. The aim of this paper is to provide a framework that helps understanding the growth process of new ventures in the aforementioned industry. In this case study, the authors assessed the suitability of models of growth dimensions, sources and obstacles proposed by earlier research and literature to a case company: a start-up company providing environmental technology for global business-to-business markets. Via qualitative, interview-based data collection among the company stakeholder and external business experts and analysis of the obtained qualitative data the authors were able to draw conclusions regarding compatibility of the case to the earlier models of new venture growth. The results obtained shows that despite the common features between the case company´s growth trajectory and models proposed by earlier research, none of the stage models offers a full match. Based on the findings the authors propose a new, partly cyclical model of start-up growth for further elaboration.

This paper describes the author's involvement in the early experiences of a start-up biotechnology company created outside the university environment. In this case, two self-employed, entrepreneurial scientists with no university affiliation developed commercializable intellectual property. Falling outside the more common university technology commercialization process, there were a number of issues that were quite different from those a typical university start-up company might face, and these are illustrated. Most importantly, this case is an exemplar of how other non-university entrepreneurs might contemplate utilizing universities to further their technology commercialization objectives.

Résumé :
This study investigates whether higher start-up intention leads to innovative behavior and whether innovative behavior is increased by the medium of entrepreneurship. This study tested the hypotheses by conducting a survey on students participating in entrepreneurship club activities in university. The results showed that start-up intention affects innovative behavior and has a significant effect on the sub-factors of entrepreneurship, such as innovation, risk taking, and proactiveness. The result of an analysis of the mediating effect of entrepreneurship on innovative behavior showed that all sub-factors performed a partially mediating role. It can therefore be said that higher start-up intention leads to more innovative behavior and that entrepreneurship serves as an important link in this relationship. These results show that increasing start-up intention may lead to innovative behavior and imply that this has educational relevance in cultivating entrepreneurship. However, this study is limited in terms of the generalizability of the results, as the subjects are university students participating in entrepreneurship club activities in Korea. Therefore, more significant outcomes can be obtained in further research by targeting a broader scope of subjects.

This paper assesses the mutating role of the state in today’s flourishing technology hubs in major cities and metropolitan areas across the globe through a comparative lens. Conventional wisdom associates the contemporary phenomenon of high-tech urbanism with minimum state intervention. In public as well as in scholarly debates, technology-intensive urban economies are customarily portrayed as a phenomenon whose formative creativity and ethos stems from an essentially post-political nature. As these economies emerge, thanks to the cooperative dynamism of urban societies, political governments are considered merely as coordinators of inter-actor relationships, particularly as managers or orchestrators of innovative ‘business ecosystems’ and ‘platforms’. We, in turn, suggest that today’s emergence of technology-based economies in a selected circle of major cities and metropolitan areas is an inherently political phenomenon, as it is closely linked to what we call the strategic urbanisation of the state. Looking at the trajectories of Finland and Italy during the post-recession decade of the 2010s, we disclose the state-driven selective mobilisation of urban economies as a response to the low-growth present of national political economies. In doing so, we argue that the entrepreneurialisation of selected urban locations cannot be understood without considering the qualitatively transformed roles of the local and national states. The coming together of entrepreneurialist and urbanising state strategies disclose a shift towards a start-up state whose distinctive features differ qualitatively from those of both the investment-oriented late-Keynesian entrepreneurial state and the decentralised local economic governance envisaged by today’s city-innovation theorists.

Abstract We explore the innovation-enabling factors in young innovative companies (YICs) considering different elements of firm-specific absorptive capacity along with factors related to the industrial structure. Evidence from Italian YICs, known as innovative start-ups whose creation was prompted by the Start-up Act in 2012, shows that absorptive capacity factors matter with differences for product and process innovation. Moreover, the configuration of the industry context remarkably shape innovation, providing implications for policy-makers seeking to improve the national competitiveness by sustaining new ventures of high technological value.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider how organizations with diverse, interdependent functions with differing evaluative principles and differing ideas as to which behaviors are the most desirable, use management controls in their efforts to achieve innovation. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a case study of TechCo, an Australian technology start-up company, over a 12 month period. Findings The authors demonstrate how the clash of differing evaluative principles among interdependent teams led to the organization seeking new ways of organizing, which in turn, enabled the organization to better manage the interdependencies between the diverse functional areas. Additionally, the findings show how, through the use of management control systems, the organization was able to promote idea generation and “buy-in” across all functional areas, order competing priorities for innovation and set the agenda as to what constituted “acceptable” innovation for the organization to pursue. Originality/value The authors find that management controls play an important role in managing the tensions between differing evaluative principles in diverse functional areas in a heterarchical organization, and in supporting innovation in such an environment. As such, the authors provide the first research evidence on how management controls are used within a heterarchy to generate and select innovative ideas.

Résumé :
This study analyzed and identified overseas and domestic start-up policies, and based on this, an analysis of the start-up status of Daegu City and a plan to revitalize start-ups were derived. For the definition of start-up, technology start-up, domestic start-up support policy, Daegu city start-up support status, overseas start-up support policy, etc. were reviewed and comprehensively described. First, it is necessary to create a sustainable virtuous cycle venture and start-up ecosystem in Daegu. Daegu presented a strategy for promotion based on the implications derived from start-up and technology startup support policies, venture business trends, venture/startup cluster analysis, and R&D and technology innovation capability analysis. The promotion strategy was divided into an integration strategy that performs tasks for each base and a linkage plan related to various parts. It is necessary to establish a start-up total service base center that provides integrated services for start-up support, a venture/startup service town, and strengthen entrepreneurship and start-up literacy education. It is necessary to establish a virtuous cycle structure linked to each company through the vitalization of industry-university joint research and continuous expansion of the maintenance of start-ups through the Beisle Valley base center that supports innovative growth after start-up and intensively fosters start-ups in the manufacturing sector. Based on Shinseo Innovation City in Dong-gu, where the medical industry infrastructure, one of Daegu City’s key businesses, is concentrated, Medi City Daegu supports medical and pharmaceutical startups and medical-related businesses such as healthcare and medical tourism. A complex support system is needed, such as establishing a center, promoting the commercialization of medical technology, attracting large medical-related companies, and establishing a cooperative system.

Abstract In the context of microfirms, this paper analyzes whether the link between the three aspects involving innovative activities—R&D, innovative output, and productivity—hold for knowledge-intensive services. With especially high start-up rates and the majority of employees in microfirms, knowledge-intensive services (KIS) have a starkly different profile from manufacturing. Results from our structural models indicate that KIS firms benefit from innovation activities through increased labor productivity with highly skilled employees being similarly important compared to R&D for creating innovation output in microfirms. Moreover, the firm size advantage of large firms found for manufacturing almost disappears in KIS, with start-ups and young firms having a higher probability of initiating innovation activities and of successfully turning knowledge into innovation output than mature firms.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the problems and possibilities for development of innovative start-ups in Latvia. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the aim of this study, a survey of Latvia’s high school students in 2015 (n = 5,910) was undertaken by an online questionnaire within a financial skill built-up contest “New Financial Expert 2016” held by the Financial Institute of Swedbank (Swedbank survey, 2016). Further, Latvia University of Agriculture master students (n = 97) were interviewed in the year 2016 to identify master students opinion about necessary support for entrepreneurship, future services or goods with potentially high added value and find out their readiness for innovative action. Findings A comparative analysis of data of the master student interviews and the survey of Latvia’s high school students showed that most of the youth associated their entrepreneurship prospects with innovative ideas, new technologies and new skills. The results of the research indicated that the foundation of start-up enterprises in Latvia led to positive results and gave an impulse to increasing economic activities as there were the necessary preconditions for their development. Originality/value The studies are mostly dedicated to start-ups that are less likely to innovate and have linked the concept of the start-up with business incubation. Unlike other studies, this is a specific research that provides insights into the situation in Latvia and is directed toward building innovative start-up enterprises that should be linked with the growth-oriented new technology, globalization and global market with a focus on innovation. Thus, research findings contribute to extant research on the possibilities of development of innovative start-up enterprises in Latvia and advance the present understanding of the main problems in the creation of new innovative start-ups.

Résumé :
Previous research has identified the clustering of high-tech industries, entrepreneurial start-ups, and venture capital across metropolitan areas. Using detailed ZIP code data on start-up activity and venture capital investment, this research tests three hypotheses informed by urban theory on the clustering of innovation, entrepreneurship, and high-technology industry: (1) that start-up activity and venture capital investment will concentrate in distinct microclusters within metro areas, (2) that a substantial level of start-up activity and venture capital investment will cluster in dense urban neighborhoods or ZIP codes, and (3) that the clustering of start-ups and venture capital investment will vary by industry or type of technology. The authors find evidence to support all three. Start-up activity and venture capital investment are concentrated in a relatively small number of ZIP codes in the United States, the majority of which are in dense urban neighborhoods, and this clustering varies by industry and type of technology.

Résumé :
Purpose: This study aims to make academic and practical suggestions for tourism startups by incorporating entrepreneurial capabilities, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial willingness as variables mainly discussed in the start-up field. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of entrepreneurial capabilities, managerial capabilities, technology, and functional capabilities on entrepreneurial will, and to clarify the mediating role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy between entrepreneurial capabilities and start-up will. Methods: The samples required for empirical research in this study were selected as tourism start-up trainees and students enrolled in tourism-related departments, and were limited to Jeollanam-do. Results: First, entrepreneurial and managerial competencies were significant in the effect of entrepreneurial competencies on entrepreneurial willingness, but technical and functional competencies were not significant. Second, as a result of confirming the mediating effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy in the relationship between entrepreneurial competency and entrepreneurial willingness, entrepreneurial competency had a significant positive effect on entrepreneurial self-efficacy, which is a dependent variable. Third, as a result of confirming the mediating effect of start-up self-efficacy in the relationship between managerial competency and start-up will, management competency had a significant positive effect on start-up self-efficacy, which is a dependent variable. Conclusion: Therefore, establishing an innovative growth strategy plan for tourism startups to successfully enter the market and thinking of entrepreneurs are important in entrepreneurial capabilities, and start-up activities should be carried out by establishing various growth strategies.

Résumé :
In today’s market era of rapid technological innovation even the most established agribusiness players risk being left behind in the wake of disruptive technology. How can large agriculture companies keep up? One emerging possibility for corporate innovation is that of the corporate start-up accelerator. Companies across all sectors, including agricultural and food technology, are increasingly using these programs to tap into early innovation. In 2017, Alltech ran its first program, the Pearse Lyons Accelerator for agri-business and ag-tech start-ups. This article serves to describe and analyze how corporate accelerators have populated start-up ecosystems and how the ag-tech and food sectors are reflecting this trend. Recommendations based on experience and critical feedback are presented to those considering developing their own accelerators and the role it might play in responsible innovation.

Résumé :
With the deepening and wide application of various emerging technologies and concepts, communication and cooperation between enterprises become more and more frequent. Open development and innovative development have become the inevitable choices for enterprises to realize their sustained and healthy growth. Especially under the guidance of the state's macro-system of strongly encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, the growth of independent innovation and entrepreneurship enterprises and open innovation issues are increasingly becoming social focus issues. This paper discusses the impact mechanism between the two and puts forward the corresponding open innovation strategy based on the relevant national encouragement system. With the continuous development of high and new technology and its wide application in the production and operation activities of enterprises, economic ties between enterprises are becoming more frequent. It has become an essential choice for most enterprises in the digital economy era to adopt an open attitude to face the competition and the market and to continuously carry out product innovation and technological innovation. Especially for small-scale and late-start independent innovation and entrepreneurship enterprises, openness and innovation are the basic conditions for their survival and development in the new competitive and technological environment. In recent years, China has launched a series of policies to encourage the development of innovative and start-up enterprises, especially pointing out the development direction of "specialization, refinement, particularity, and innovation" for manufacturing enterprises and introducing relevant support and reward systems. Under the influence of these two factors, it is of great practical significance for independent innovation and start-up enterprises to explore what form of open innovation an enterprise should take and how it functions.

Résumé :

Purpose: Support policy for start-up companies is being developed nowadays in Slovakia, but so far there has hardly been any research focuses on this issue. Therefore, the aim of this article is to identify, what are the specific needs and funding sources of start-up companies according to their stage of development.
Methodology/Approach: This paper used questionnaire empirical approach. The research was conducted in the Košice region. The sample of 47 innovative start-up companies was obtained and analysed using statistical measurements such as the Pearson’s chi-square test and the correspondence analysis method.
Findings: The results reveal that start-up companies at their initial phase of development mostly use bank loans as a funding source of their activities, but they opt also business angel as their source of funding at start phase of development. The findings further discover relation between the stage of the development of start-up company and its specific need. Additionally, research probes that collaboration with other firms or universities has a positive impact on prosperity of the start-up company in terms of higher profitability and better access to funding.
Research limitation/Implication: The Košice region is not an area, where representative survey in the field of start-up companies can be held nowadays. It relates to small market of innovative and creative solutions and goes with not so developed incentives to support start-up companies in their initial phase of development too. Thus, all the results and the outcomes coming from the dataset can be considered rather demonstrational than complex.
Originality/Value of paper: We show the specific needs and funding sources for start-up companies in the Košice region according to their stage of development and thus identify, which aspects government representatives should pay attention to and what should be taken into consideration when designing policy initiatives oriented towards support of start-up prosperity. Furthermore, we bridge the gap between increased attention to analysis of start-up companies and no effort made to analyse them in the Košice region.

Résumé :
Start-ups have got a vital role to play in the future of India by creating innovative solutions to country’s challenging issues and also by generating large-scale job opportunities for upcoming workforce. The government has recognised the importance of start-ups in the economic development of the country, and therefore they have come with various revolutionary measures to create a conducive ecosystem for start-ups. Along with union government, various state governments also have made their state-level policies to support the start-ups in their respective states. Apart from the government, there are many other institutions and ecosystem enablers in a start-up ecosystem who support start-up units, namely incubators, accelerators, educational institutions, research institutions, investors, mentors, NGOs etc. The purpose of this study is to explore how technology business incubation centres in Kerala are performing their role as a facilitator among start-ups in the state and also to evaluate their impact on functioning of start-ups units.

Résumé :
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to capture the role of internal and external characteristics in favouring the growth of innovative start-ups at an early stage of their life.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical approach of this paper is based on an econometric analysis applied to all Italian innovative start-ups with four and five years of life. Growth is analysed after four and five years from the constitution, depending on internal investments in research and development (R&D), in tangible assets and on characteristics external to the firm (110 Italian provinces) related to industrial variety, specialisation, public investments in R&D, etc.FindingsThe results achieved in this study reveal the importance of internal R&D investment even though there is missing evidence on the relevance of general and government specific R&D investment in the area. Other interesting results concern the importance of the firm’s involvement in the technological specialisation of the area and the need for general variety in technological diversification in the area to favour the growth of start-ups.Practical implicationsThe results imply that entrepreneurs should evaluate carefully their strategic choices in terms of the location of the start-up and the investment in R&D as these could be important factors for the firm’s growth.Originality/valueThis paper is an original attempt to measure the importance of both internal and external characteristics for the growth of start-ups. Moreover, the analysis covers the overall population of a new interesting category of firm, the innovative start-up.

Résumé :
Effectuation and business model innovation (BMI) are research topics that are frequently discussed in the literature. While effectuation describes the effectual behaviour for founding a start-up with an emphasis on using currently available means, BMI is considered a way of creating a business model with long-term competitive advantages. Both approaches are valuable for start-ups pursuing growth in an uncertain environment. This work-in-progress paper presents insights from the reviewed extant literature. Further research will investigate effectuation and its enabling impact in designing innovative business models in the context of Swiss start-ups.

Résumé :
A report of GEM (2018) stated that start-up firms with the total time doing business under 3.5 years have only 20.8% success rate. Among various reasons leading to their failure, not having an appropriate innovating business model is considered the major one. Thus, this research was conducted with the purpose of testing the influence of business model innovation on the business performance of start-up firms. This study applied PLS-SEM approach to process data collected from 150 Vietnamese start-up firms. It is confirmed based on the research findings that BMI’s three basic components have impacts with the same direction on the performance of start-up firms in their beginning period of doing business. The study results collected have presented practical contribution to the management level of each start-up firm in order to improve their effectiveness. On the other hand, suggestions are also proposed to assist other relating organizations in developing their abilities to support start-up activities. In addition, research limitations and directions for further researches are proposed.
