Using data from the Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS), this thesis explores the effects that innovation activities has on the survival of new firms. The KFS follows 4,928 American start-ups from 2004 to 2011. A probit model is used to examine the relationships that may exist between a number of different variables relating to innovation and survival. The results indicate that firms that invest in research and development (R&D) and machinery and equipment persistently are more likely to survive than those that do not, or those that only invest once in these types of innovative business activities. Also, with regards to intellectual property (copyrights, trademarks and patents), firms that hold these types of intellectual property have a better chance of survival than those that do not hold any intellectual property.

(Saviozzi, 2017)

Résumé :
This research is focused on the following question: how do French high-tech start-ups integrate the concept of value for customers? After an exploration of the academic literature, we present an empirical approach, based on our professional background as entrepreneur. This chapter offers a quantitative approach towards primary data: 1 196 managers of high-tech start-ups, with 280 qualified answers. This approach is based on a research model, 6 hypotheses, variables allowing the design of a questionnaire, and a coding system. We finally propose 5 main findings. First, an eleven step process, allowing a start-up manager to position its price. Second, a typology of the value propositions, including 9 possibilities. Third, we established a general weakness of the 58 % of the French high-tech startups value propositions, without correlation between start-ups maturity and value proposition’s improvement. Fourth finding: the poor level of value creation: only 26 % of our panel creates more value than the competition. Our fifth and last main finding will address some macro-economic considerations, using syllogism: the majority of the French high-tech start-ups have an unattractive value proposition; the correlation between value proposition and companies’ performances has been established by the literature: is the value propositions’ weakness could contribute to explain the poor growth of French SME’s, as well as the poor average profitability of French VC’s?
Background: There is a great interest in researching prescriptive methods as entrepreneurs demand guidance for start-up processes. A learn-by-doing methodology called lean start-up methodology has influenced tech entrepreneurs. Further, design thinking is another methodology for developing innovation that has been suggested to benefit in a software context. The uncertain nature requiring rapid innovation for software start-ups has sparked the interest in exploring the combination of the methodologies in an entrepreneurial context to utilize the benefits of both. However, the methodologies have been criticized due to a lack of rigor. It is therefore an opportunity to explore applicability of lean start-up in practice and design thinking in a software context to develop a unique methodology integrating lean start-up and design thinking.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the occurrence of the two innovation driven methods lean start-up and design thinking in successful software start-ups, to develop a theory of an integrated methodology that utilizes the benefits of both. The intent is to provide explicit guidance for both scholars and entrepreneurs. Methodology: An exploratory qualitative method was used with an inductive approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with six founders of successful software companies. Conclusion:  The findings advance the understanding of the lean start-up methodology in practice, by extending the aspect of idea development and clarifying the use of iterating aspects of the business model. The findings update the sequence of design thinking when applied in a software context and extend the iterating aspect, to adapt to the need for rapid development. The theory of suggested integration confirms that the first stages of design thinking initiate the idea process, emphasizing early consideration of desirability, viability, and feasibility, while lean start-up is integrated into the product development process, emphasizing rapid iterating development for validation.

Résumé :
Start-ups face several issues and challenges in the course of their development as a compa-ny. Open innovation has been discussed in research for more than a decade as a concept, which can bring benefits to a company. Even though most of the research has been focus-ing on large enterprises, some researchers discuss also benefits for small companies like start-ups. Nevertheless, it can be observed that some start-ups decide to adopt the opposite of open innovation, namely closed innovation, through not sharing internal knowledge to the outside world. Hence, start-ups perceive the benefits of open innovation differently and decide accordingly whether to adopt open innovation or not. The purpose of this study is to explore if start-ups decide to actually do the former and what reasons they have to do so. Therefore, this study will further discover at what point in the development of their start-up and with whom they adopt open innovation. As an attractive industry for start-ups, the mobile services industry is selected as a scope for this study. Furthermore, Sweden is selected as the country of study, due to its reputation as one of the most innova-tive countries in the world. A qualitative study has been conducted using in-depth interviews with founders and co-founders of start-ups to retrieve narrative stories about their start-up’s development from the first day of an idea to a scalable business, and their experiences and motivations in re-gards to the application of open innovation practices. The analysis of this study detects pat-terns among the interviewed start-ups and concludes that start-ups in the mobile services industry in Sweden adopt open innovation in each phase of their development process. Furthermore, these patterns include several reasons why the start-ups applied open innova-tion practices and with whom, which are changing over the course of their development.

Résumé :
“[A]s much as any other product, the car has shaped not only the global economy but how billions of people live”1,whilethe digital area is nowshapingthe car.Coopetition, a strategy presenting firms with the opportunity to collaborate and compete at the same time,is becoming a prevalent phenomenonamong large OEMs and start-ups in the automotive industry.Respectively, considering that coopetition, in the context of open innovation and new technologies, has been identified as a successful strategy, this thesis will therefore analyse the relationship between OEMs and external start-ups in the context of coopetition and corporate open innovation strategies. Several typesof corporate incubators, accelerators and corporate innovation labs emerged within the last years, howeveran integration of all three of these has not yet been widely explored. Accordingly, while these open innovation streamsare used by large corporationsto get access to the start-upecosystemand increase their innovation capabilities, the relationship between OEMs and external start-ups will further lead to CIIAs (a combined approach of corporate incubators, corporate innovation labs and corporate accelerators),demonstratedin the context of coopetition. This exploratory study therebycontributes to the relationship between external start-ups and OEMsthrough aCIIA approach, answering the two following researchquestions;•What are the main drivers of the OEM and external start-uprelationship?•How do OEMs and external start-ups coopete in the context of corporate open innovation strategies? To dulyanswer these research questions, we choseaqualitative researchmethodcombined with an interpretivist and inductiveapproachas well asempirical findings generated from 6semi-structured interviews. We furthercontributed tothe illustrationof the key aspects of CIIAsas well asthe motives, management and implications behind the relationshipsbetween OEMs and external start-upsbyaconceptual framework. Our analysishence showsthe significanceof the access to complementary resources, the co-creation and co-development of value as well as the systematic implementation of a proof of conceptin the light of thesecoopetitive relationshipsbetween CIIAs and external start-ups.However, consideringthat thisresearch has been based on the German automotive industry only, it will require further research in other contexts, sectors or countries. To conclude, thisthesis contributes tothe management literature ofcoopetition, corporate innovation and entrepreneurship. We proposeda finalframeworkto highlightthekey motives, the management and the implications behind thecoopetitive relationshipsbetween OEMsand external start-upsthrough the CIIA platform. This willexpectedly help managers and entrepreneurs develop efficientmanagement techniques as well asfurther recognize and understand the influential dynamicspresent in these relationships

Leadership is a complex concept and its definition and meaning is at the centre of scholars’ discussions, and especially, when the role of leader is played by a woman, the question become even more complicated. The purpose of this thesis is to examine firstly the diverse typology of leadership that women adopt, and secondly, the possibilities and issues they encounter in such a powerful position. In particular, I will focus my attention on the role that women assume when it comes to be en entrepreneur and run a start-up company. Considering the aim of this study, I will firstly provide a theoretical framework on the various studies on leadership, its role and definition, and, in particular, its different styles. I will also focus my attention on the notion of Emotional Intelligence and on the relationship with leadership. Lastly, I will consider the gender stereotype, when related to leadership. By using a French start-up as a case study, I will describe the role of a female entrepreneur and her leadership.

Résumé :
The determinants of success in venture capital financing are explored in this manuscript. 1247 venture capital funds formed over a twenty-year time period are empirically analyzed with results that support theoretical research from extant finance and economics literature. Venture capitalists' choices of portfolio size, distance from portfolio firms, location, and to some extent, level of diversification in their investment portfolio, are all significant factors in explaining the success rates of venture capital funds. These results are robust even when controlling for other characteristics of venture funds and entrepreneurial firms, such as the stage of development and industry of the portfolio firms, which may affect success rates of venture capitalist portfolios.

Résumé :
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This work project is aimed at cooperation with the company Plux towards a project, where we aim to solve a specific problem the company wants to tackle, thus simulating a professional consultancy project. I started by discussing the problem with the company, where we agreed that the research question for my project would be “How to Increase Plux’s Market Share in the Sports Sector?” Towards this end I structured my work project in 4 key areas. First, I worked towards the Identification area, where I did an environmental, competitor and internal analysis to be able to correctly identify the problem and its context. Then, I proceeded to the Disaggregation area, where I performed a SWOT, Porter’s 5 Forces and Value Chain analysis to disaggregate the problem into its underlying components. This phase concluded with the postulation of 4 hypotheses as to the manifestations of the problem. After arriving at these hypotheses, I did a Validation phase, where I tested the validity of each hypothesis to determine its strategic importance and arrived at the conclusion that the problem was mainly a Marketing and P&S Offering issue. Finally, I provide recommendations to solve both these issues, as well as some limitations as to their applicability and impact. In the course of my work project, I maintained a close relationship with Plux by way of email exchanges and periodic meetings at their office, conducted interviews to major clients and collected data from competitors and sector institutions. I considered it to be a very rewarding professional work, and I present my thanks both to Plux’s team, who have been extremely helpful throughout the whole semester, and my counselor, for his invaluable advice and support from beginning to end.

Résumé :
Background and purpose - Digitisation is connecting various business actors to create interconnected ecosystems through digital platforms. Meanwhile entrepreneurial ecosystems are offering various benefits for start-ups e.g. through support organisations that offer services for them. Currently, these start-up support organisations face the challenge of leveraging digital services to create value for their member start-ups. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the digital services offered in start-up support organisations create value for start-ups. Approach - From a theoretical perspective, the sociology of value and service dominant logic concepts such as value co-creation and service ecosystems are considered. Qualitative methods were used to conduct a pre-study and an in-depth case study with a start-up hub in Stockholm's entrepreneurial ecosystem. Data was collected using 18 semi-structured interviews with start-ups and other actors in the ecosystem and participant observations of 17 events. Findings - Needs and challenges for start-ups were identified and mapped against the digital services used by the start-ups. These services facilitate interaction between various actors in the start-up hub. Seven interconnected value types for the start-ups were identified emerging from the use of digital and non-digital services in the start-up hub. Moreover, many of the digital services are not provided by the start-up hub alone but in collaboration with other actors, connecting the start-up hub to other actors in the start-up ecosystem. Research limitations and implications - The findings contribute to the understanding of how start-up support organisations leverage digital services to support their member start-ups. The connection of digital service usage to the creation of various value types provides a theoretical concept to research about service ecosystem. As the study has been conducted with a limited number of respondents and events in Stockholm, further research in other ecosystems and using different methods is suggested to ensure generalisability of the findings of this study. Practical implications - A number of practical suggestions for start-up support organisations can be derived from the findings, including that start-up support organisations can benefit from establishing and moderating a digital community, involving several actors from the ecosystem and continuously adapting digital services to the changing environment and needs of start-ups. Originality - To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first study to investigate digital services in entrepreneurial ecosystems from the perspective of value in service ecosystems.

The aim of this thesis is to further the understanding of the entrepreneurial process, from opportunity recognition to the development of start-ups. Various literatures are used, such as those of entrepreneurship, innovation studies and theories of organisations. The theoretical framework also introduces the concept of entrepreneurial agency. This framework is tested through thirteen case studies of biotech start-ups. The results are presented in three analytical chapters. The first develops the impact of involving financiers on entrepreneurial agency and firm evolution. The second aims at observing the effects of a change of leadership throughout the entrepreneurial activity, and links the background of the founder with the strategy of the firm. The final chapter attempts to understand the steps that a research project goes through when transitioning from the incubating organisation to a newly created enterprise

In Brazil, and more recently in the city of Fortaleza, there is a new form of entrepreneurship that is focused on the information and communication technology service sector and that draws the attention of young people, investors, governments, authors and media companies: it is known as the start-up movement. Today, it is considered to be a driving force behind the creative economy. Rooted on progressive discourse, the words enterprise and innovation seduce new economic agents motivated by success stories from Silicon Valley in America along with increasing commercial activity for digital goods and services. This master’s dissertation assesses, from a sociological point of view, the new productive wave problematized by the light of Manuel Castells’ informational capitalism. Considering the skeptical as well as the optimistic opinions about the impact of this new entrepreneurial rearrangement, the following question is asked: does the startup movement rekindle the capitalist spirit or does it present roots which divert from its speculating essence? The raised hypotheses are based on employability factors as well as cultural, economical, and political matters related to innovation and technology. This study has produced a nationwide quantitative assessment with a special focus on the reality of these Ceará firms; as well as comparative qualitative interviews on American and Brazilian experiences lived by identified agents. This dissertation outlines the public incentive policy of the federal government, the Start-up Brasil Program, from the perspective of these companies and provides details as to the discipline methods of the new enterprising way born in the United States. The startups are very young companies that are headed towards the economic sustainment of the productive sector services. These companies are dropping the seeds that will produce the re-enchantment of young people and bring them back to participation in political debate; they provide relief and reheats the job market; and they produce a democratization of the entrepreneurial “Do-It-Yourself” culture. They capitalize the pivot of the wall street wolves and of agents being charged for new masks. There are developmental logic’s prophylaxis in the face of dreadful innovation stagnation. The lack of continuity in Brazilian governmental politics and cultural nuances related to entrepreneurship are barring the desired regional success of this ecosystem.

This thesis aims to implement a competitive intelligence process within a start-up that develops an emerging technology. A double emergence has been identified: the environment of the company and the company itself.First, we call upon an original analytical framework for competitive intelligence: Technological Innovation Systems (TIS). This framework allows for a dynamic analysis of the innovation system of the company through the structure and the interactions between the agents within the system. Second, we address the benefit of taking into the account the intrinsic characteristics of the company for the implementation of a competitive intelligence process. Our understanding of specific elements of the start-up, its adhocratic structure for instance, has allowed in a third step to implement tools in line with the importance of the human dimension and the resources that the company can mobilize. We organized the creation of knowledge from the information cycle, suggest a first evaluation of the competitive intelligence process and deduced the considered extensions. Finally, we focused on the use of patent for the understanding of a technological domain.Carried out in an action research approach (conducted as part of a CIFRE contract), this thesis shows the test of our method of technology intelligence within Poietis, a French bioprinting start-up

Résumé :
Abstract. This study was undertaken as a master’s thesis in marketing in the spring of 2016. The aim of the study is to investigate the role of marketing communications in the innovation commercialization process in start-up companies and offer guidelines for start-up companies on utilizing marketing communications tools in the commercialization of innovative products. The reason for choosing this particular topic is that start-ups have a major role in creating innovations, but they may have trouble with commercializing them. We believe that marketing communications have the potential to enhance the possibilities of a company to success in their commercialization process. This research is a qualitative case study of four start-ups that have discovered some form of new technological innovation and utilize it in their product. The primary data is collected using semi-structured interviews and puzzle exercise. The theoretical part of the study is divided for three sections. The first theme contains topics of innovation, innovation strategy, product development and innovation commercialization process. The second theme is going through theory of marketing communications. The third section is theoretical framework which is built to combine theories regarding the innovation commercialization process and marketing communications. The theoretical framework is the basis which our research is built upon. The empirical part of our thesis comprises an analysis of our research data which is presented in a thematic order that follows order of our theoretical framework. In the chapter, we draw comparisons between theory and empirical data. As a conclusion, we have formulated a start-up verified framework that is based on our theoretical framework, but altered to meet the commercialization process of a start-up company. The start-up-verified framework is applied in answering the research questions. As the main result we found out that the role of marketing communications is essential throughout the innovation commercialization process even though its importance and purpose fluctuates between different stages of the process. During the process of commercialization, the role of marketing communications evolves from preparing activities into implementation of actions. This thesis contributes to the previous studies on commercialization process, as there are no studies made on within this specific start-up context combining commercialization and marketing communications. From a theoretical standpoint the results of this study highlight the iterative nature of the phases of commercialization process. As a managerial implication, our start-up verified framework serves outlines for discussion about marketing communications and how it could be connected to their commercialization process. Limitations of this thesis concern relatively small sample size of empirical data, which leads us to believe that our research does not reach a degree of validity that would be suitable for making generalizations. We also knowingly ignore whatever happens after the last stage of commercialization process, so we do not argue how a start-up company would continue to develop if we knew that the commercialization process had been carried out successfully.

If the explosion of the East/West system marks the end of the idea of global confrontation as model of the war since the end of the second world conflict, we more fundamentally have to wonder about the changes which took place since the 90s as regards the status of the very war and about the role of the peace operations in the international relations. The political crises ensuing from internal conflicts are sources of destabilization and weakening of the local institutions which undergo the tumult and weaken the capacity of the actors to go out of such a political situation. The necessity of strengthening the local capacities during this pivotal period to avoid the recurring crises is translated by the presence of the international community which spreads a multitude of strategies. There is indeed in the grammar of United Nations a continuum in the modes of crises’ management which goes the most reserved forms of the persuasion to certain modalities of coercive diplomacy, implying a use limited by the violence. When we examine the peace operations in RDC, dynamic set tensions and connections, oscillating between order and disorder in its institutional expressions, the report which gets free is that the question of the peace requires an analysis which takes into account several factors. Hence the use of an interdisciplinary approach, involving both critical currents in international relations (critical constructivism) while combining the sociology of international relations. Our study attempts to estimate the relevance and the coherence of the practices and the conducts of the international actors in a better way axiological and ideological outlines of the management of the iterative crises

This dissertation investigates the firm incentives to participate in entrepreneurial and innovative activities. The first chapter examines and evaluates the private sector’s response to public involvement in venture capital. The second chapter studies and estimates the performance gap between government linked and private venture capitalists and the determining factors of this performance gap. The third chapter provides a theoretical framework to understand and analyze the firm-level innovation incentives in the industrial networks. In Chapter 1, titled "Can Governments Foster the Development of Venture Capital?", I examine the role of government intervention in the emergence of venture capital (VC) in China during 1999-2013 using a novel dataset and a unique policy experiment. The difference-indifference analysis shows that the central government program leads to an increase in local investment from both government and private VCs. In Chapter 2, titled "(Under)performance of government venture capitalists: Evidence and explanations", using the sample from the same source as in Chapter 1, I find that startups backed by government VCs are less likely to have Initial Public Offering (IPO) exits than private VCs. Evidence shows that the performance gap is narrowed down when the VC market develops into a more mature stage. In Chapter 3, titled "Firm Level Match under Imperfect Information Along the Global Value Chain", (joint with Rui Zhang), we develop a 1-m frictional positive assortative matching (PAM) model along the global value chain. We show the existence of multiple equilibria where a supplier could be matched to different headquarters, but at different stages on the value chain. Our model also features countervailing forces of firm innovation incentives and we predict a nonmonotonic pattern between innovation and firm productivity

Résumé :
The present thesis examines the relationship between innovation and gender diversity in the workforce, through the lens of new firms in the Stockholm Tech start-up ecosystem. Taking a point of departure in a knowledge-based understanding of innovation and firm dynamics, the study explores the relationship between gender and innovation at the firm level. First, the theoretical framework is built on relevant literature and empirical research in a multidisciplinary fashion. Then, a qualitative inquiry is designed with the aim of contributing to the growing research corpus in the intersection of gender diversity and firm capacity to innovate. Employing a qualitative interviewing method, data was collected among founders and founding team members of entry-level tech start-ups in Stockholm. The objective was to document how founders and entrepreneurs, in general, approach gender diversity when building their start-up teams. The analysis reveals that gender diversity, albeit acknowledged as an input to innovative performance, is not prioritized over other human capital aspects, such as talent. This is in line with the bulk of literature that studies the diversity in knowledge base and firm performance, hence highlighting the cognitive aspects of innovation process. The thesis findings are of considerable benefit both for broadening the extant approach to innovation process and for understanding gender diversity dynamics in the workforce.

Résumé :
When developing new products, it is important to be able to evaluate their readiness as this helps organizations manage three major challenges of product development, performance, schedule, and budget. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) discovered this in 1990 and developed a nine-level framework to measure the progression of technology development, Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).  The framework has since then been adopted by many different industries, among them OEMs. However, there are more aspects of the innovation process than just technology. Research topics such as user centered design and business model innovation has lately gained much attention, indicating that user and business aspects of the innovation are important. Therefore, the purpose of his thesis was to propose a framework to evaluate the readiness of business, user and technology aspects. To do so, a case study was performed at the Swedish OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Husqvarna Group, a global producer of equipment for garden and park care, as well as for the construction industry. A literature study was performed to create an understanding of the current knowledge on the topic. Semi structured interviews were used to investigate how innovation is performed at the researched company. The result from these interviews was contrasted with the results from interviews at four other Swedish OEMs, to increase external validity. Lastly the findings were validated through focus group interviews at Husqvarna Group. The case study resulted in the identification of important steps when developing viable, desirable, and feasible products. From these, the nine most important for business and user was identified and frameworks for business and user readiness respectively were developed, along with attainment criteria for each level. The findings showed that the TRL framework still holds relevance, however the attainment criteria were adjusted to better suit OEMs. Together these three frameworks create the Innovation Readiness Level (IRL) framework.

This MSc thesis was a project performed in a start-up that develops sustainable devices to exploit renewable energies, specifically in the field of energy harvesting in small scale. The objective of the thesis is to demonstrate the importance of developing the technical side of a project together with the development of the market. The idea is to enhance the success possibilities and work to get to the market as fast as possible with a minimum sellable product using the resources as efficiently as possible. The market analysis was the first step to be performed to understand what the start-up was getting into, at the beginning it was clear that the generator should be targeted to power remote applications that require small amounts of energy and a market that is not suitable for present technologies such as solar PV or micro wind turbines. After this a series of potential markets were identified in order to limit the research and three opportunities were selected. The buoy market was chosen, it has several sub-markets and the AtoN buoys, Fishing buoys and Meteorological buoys were considered the most important and suitable ones. Once the market was defined, the needs of the clients and users were discovered through research in the form of interviews and bibliographical research. Later on an experimental rig was used to test several models of the prototype under different parameters to select one that was close to what was demanded and that can actually be built. This approach was useful to dedicate resources efficiently, specially time and money. The last part of the thesis was to propose a sustainable business model describing a go-to-market strategy that considered both the limitations of the technology and the testing performed in the scope of this project and the expectations of the market for the proposed product. The methodology was a mixed use of business tools learned in the courses and the experiences of the people who were close to the start-up. There is a final reflection at the conclusions that describe the day-to-day of the start-up and the experiences learned as well as the recommendations for future work.

The main objective of this thesis is to study the factors that trigger the development of eco-innovations for the case of French firms. We have addressed this question in different contexts using original data. We contribute to the empirical literature by focusing on entrepreneurial and spatial aspects. The main results show that environmental policy instruments have a different impact on the types of eco-innovations (waste treatment, renewable energy and climate change mitigation technologies) and that eco-innovations are not always profitable for firms. Hence, it is essential to adjust public policy instruments in a way to improve the profitability of eco-innovations. After carrying out a survey on French start-ups, the results of the analysis have shown that there is a diversity of profiles of eco-innovators. Indeed, firms cluster into five main profiles and exhibit different eco-innovation drivers. We have shown empirically that the different categories of eco-innovators do not have the same difficulties in accessing funds. This led us to conclude that public policies must be designed taking into account the specificity of each profile. We have also shown that the recombination of environmental and non environmental technologies and environmental political support are the main factors explaining the location of eco-innovative firms. Moreover, by applying spatial econometrics we found that there is a clear spatial dependence on their creation while the impact of knowledge spillovers is quite local

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to find what appropriate Management Control Systems exist that can help fast-growing start-ups to achieve a controlled and healthy growth. We also studied how the control systems can be used together, and balanced between each other. To find appropriate control systems, we conducted a literature review of important factors for implementing management control, that ended with a tentative framework of control systems. After that, we conducted a multiple case study including several fast-growing technology start-ups to see how they use the collection of control systems in our tentative control framework, and analyzed what effect they have on the organization’s activities and how they balance between them. After the case study, a cross-case analysis was conducted were differences and similarities between the cases were analyzed and related to the theoretical concepts from the literature review. This led to conclusions regarding how start-ups tend to use and balance the control systems, which in turn led to the finalized control framework for fast-growing start-ups. The framework provides a set of control systems that start-ups can use that are relevant for supporting growth and managing the most common challenges that fast-growing start-ups face. By using different levers of control, the control systems complement each other and create a dynamic tension, which increases performance. For start-ups that are in a product development phase, the balance of the control systems is mostly on growth and innovation, which supports exploration of opportunities. However, there is still a little focus on control and efficiency to keep the organization focused. For start-ups with an already developed and commercialized product, the balance of control systems is more towards the middle. The most focus is put on growth and efficiency, with a little less emphasis on innovation and control. This is a way to keep an even balance between exploration of opportunities and exploitation of current resources.

This thesis investigates the performance of business model innovation (BMI) by incumbent power utility and clean-tech start-up firms influenced by the German Energiewende. It emphasises the factors that impact BMI from a managers’ perspective, examines success factors for managers to overcome BMI challenges, and addresses contingencies to perform BMI in a more structured way. The research is driven by the German Energiewende. It has been chosen as Germany is considered one of the world’s leading markets for renewable energies and a transformation of the power sector is currently underway. Therefore, established power utility firms face severe changes, which have the characteristics of a potential disruption to their business model (BM). At the same time, new players are challenging these incumbents with new BMs. The research is underpinned by the extant literature on BMs and BMI. The research approach is based on two case studies; the incumbent power utility and the clean-tech start-up sector. The qualitative study comprises of 24 semi-structured interviews conducted with top tier managers, from 18 firms, responsible for BMI within these firms. Key findings: This study extends our knowledge of BMI in both a start-up and an incumbent environment that is influenced by various contingent events. It portrays barriers to BMI and depicts critical success factors for BMI that point out solutions on how to overcome these barriers. It provides a structured BMI framework for established firms and illustrates future BM archetypes in this sector. It clearly documents the German Energiewende is regarded as a disruptive threat from the perspective of incumbent power utility managers. The theoretical contribution of this thesis is a process framework including all identified drivers and challenges for BMI in both established and start-up firms. Contributions to practice include critical success factors for BMI, recommendations to overcome barriers to BMI and future BM archetypes within the newly evolving Energiewende industry based on sustainable technologies.

This paper explores the existence of a shared community involving the members, users and organisers of three collaborative work spaces located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Situated as part of an emergent global phenomenon, these spaces, despite having notable differences, share many important features and are, I argue, part of a knowledge exchanging cluster of grassroots entrepreneurialism and innovation-oriented organisations, groups and events in the Phnom Penh area. I explore this cluster as a community in two ways: firstly through the mapping of a knowledge architecture locating the spaces and their actors as nodes within a flow of relationships and activities, secondly, via a networked ethnographic inquiry tracing these flows to actors within the network through qualitative research methods. In doing so I reveal the degree to which there exists a shared community perceived by the users and organisers of these spaces as well highlighting potential opportunities for greater sharing of knowledge, ideas and experience. The paper finds that though a nascent community does exist, there is still significant variance in the levels of cognisance of this community by the different actors as well as in the approach to its engagement. Despite this, there remains, in large part, a shared set of goals and values paving the way for future community collaboration.

Résumé :
In the lifecycle of an innovative start-up, the natural excursus of its life embeds the connection to the external environment. The external environment feeds the innovative new venture, and the latter feeds the surrounding context by fostering innovation. The mutual influence that these entities carry out on each other is possible through the establishment and the activation of ties. Social ties represent the tool that connect entrepreneurs to others and the tool enabling the existence of some types of interactions. In fact, entrepreneurs exploit their social ties to gain resources that they individually cannot obtain. New market opportunities, technical and strategic skills, financial resources, further networking and contracts, credibility and reputation are a series of benefits that startup entrepreneurs may receive and have access through their social networks. Leveraging personal ties (family, friends, colleagues) or inter-organizational ties enables founders to obtain what they need to make their venture grow. In this dissertation, eight innovative startups operating in the food industry in the region of Veneto are analyzed. The objective is to identify which ties have been involved by founders in the creation and development of the startup and how they contributed to innovative startups’ conformation, strategic orientation and performance from foundation to the actual condition.

Gamra, Miloud. « Innovation, ambidextrie et jeune entreprise technologique ». Thesis, Pau, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PAUU2063.

This research focuses on the development process of the young technology-based firm (YTBF). It aims to understand the key actions that facilitate the transition from invention to innovation and to determine if ambidexterity (i.e., the balance between exploration and exploitation) is associated with greater performance. To begin with, we establish the definitions of the young technology-based firm, innovation, exploration, exploitation and ambidexterity which are used in this research. A first empirical study, based on group concept mapping, identifies three actions that are particularly important and feasible for moving from prototyping to commercialization: listening to team members; communicate about the product by highlighting the features that will please the customer; understand what market needs the product will fill. Anticipating the financing of growth from the inception of the company is identified as particularly important but difficult to achieve. A second empirical study focuses on ambidexterity. We use literature to determine the key variables necessary for the conceptual modeling of ambidexterity: ambidexterity is potentially influenced by a set of organizational and contextual variables (composition of the entrepreneurial team, features of the economic and institutional environment, financial resources); ambidexterity is likely to influence performance; performance may depend directly on some antecedents of ambidexterity. These hypotheses are tested. We use 94 answers obtained from a questionnaire sent to 350 JET. The results are as follows: (i) cohesion and to a lesser extent the complementarity of the entrepreneurial team, the dynamism of the environment and the quality of the technological business incubators are the main antecedents of ambidexterity; (ii) ambidexterity is positively associated with economic performance and (iii) financial resources have no impact on ambidexterity

The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, produced by human activities in the energy sector is one of the main causes of climate change. Therefore, the decarbonization of power systems has become an urgent need the mitigate to the effects of climate change and achieve the energy transition. The share of renewable energy technologies has been increasing mainly due to the participation of new market players. Today, however, one of the great challenges is to maintain the electricity system’s balance and security despite the large amount of renewable energy resources connected to the grid. One of the approaches to deal with this issue and to increase power system flexibility is the Demand Response (DR). Moreover, scholars argue that business model innovation can act as an energy transition driver. This thesis examines business model innovations in the context of the energy transition by investigating emerging start-up business models. The implemented research methodology in this thesis consists of a systematic literature review and an investigation of empirical data of 15 European energy start-ups. As a result, the thesis provides the research community with (1) a grouping method to classify different Energy Business Models (EBMs) and an initial synthesis of the EBMs identified in the literature; (2) a framework to analyse start-ups in the energy sector, completed with the analysis of 15 energy start-ups; (3) and a conceptual tool for DR innovation, named as the Demand Response Business Model Canvas (DRBMC), which includes 12 interrelated elements. This canvas aims at evaluating DR activities and supporting the emergence of new DR business models. These results can also help entrepreneurs explore new demand response market opportunities, enabling a better understanding and providing a simplified analytic framework of existing business practices

Résumé :
Purpose – The purpose of this thesis was to increase the understanding of how formal and informal intellectual property may affect value generation of strategic and financial values within the nanotechnology start-up sector. Method – This study had an inductive approach through a qualitative multi-case study. The data collection was carried out through 23 interviews, including four exploratory interviews and 19 semi-structured interviews. The collected data was continuously analyzed in order to identify concepts, themes and aggregated dimensions. The collected data was analyzed through two categories, namely type of intellectual property and prioritized type of value desired. Findings – Through protecting innovations nanotechnology start-ups seek both strategic and financial values. The findings show nanotechnology start-ups seek strategic values in the form of trustworthiness through qualified recognition, ability to increase in market share, and having a competitive presence on the market. The findings further show nanotechnology start-ups seek financial values in the form of effective resource allocation, direct income from market transactions, and ability to attain investors. Furthermore, the findings suggest that for nanotechnology start-ups to effectively generate strategic and financial values it can be beneficial to combine formal and informal IP where a combination of trade secrets and patents can be valuable. Theoretical contributions – The analysis resulted in a grounded theory articulation in the form of a conceptual framework describing the relationships between the type of IP and how it may affect value generation for nanotechnology start-ups. This study adds to previous research that aspects fulfilling market demands can be effectively protected by patents, and aspects difficult to reverse engineer can be effectively protected by trade secrets in order to generate strategic and financial value. This study also adds to theory by identifying enablers describing how nanotechnology start-ups can generate strategic and financial values, and which type of IP is associated with each enabler. Practical implications – This study provide managers within the nanotechnology start-up sector with a framework suggesting how to generate different values from protecting innovations. The study further concludes that there are six important aspects to consider in creating effective IP strategies within the nanotechnology start-up sector. These aspects include; mapping the technological environment and the commercial market, determining which actual strategic and financial values are important for the start-up, protecting different aspects of an innovation with different types of IP, having trade secrets on aspects of an innovation that are hard to reverse engineer, to formally protect aspects of an innovation that fulfills market demand, and making a plan for how the rights attained can generate value.

Useche, Diego.

The success of the US innovation model to help start-ups emerge as global leaders has greatly influenced many regulatory changes on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and the external finance of firms in Europe. This study aims to analyze the role and importance of these changes in the organization and performance of software firms. We show that multiple regulatory mutations of IPR have paved the way for some kind of “restricted” patentability of software in Europe. In parallel, via changes in financial markets, they play an increasing role in the growth and development of young innovative companies. In addition, it seems that the strategic use of patents is complementary with software firms’ access to capital markets. We study this complementarity by analyzing the value of patents as signals for IPO markets and their impact in the likelihood of survival of newly-listed companies. We argue that this complementarity may explain the increased importance of patents in a sector where patents are highly controversial. It refers to a particular market selection process and the appearance of winning and losing actors
