Résumé :
ABSTRACT ‘Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite’ photometry of 10 young stars with very complex periodic light curves is considered. Previous findings that these cannot be due to dark surface spots are re-evaluated by allowing arbitrarily shaped areas on the stellar surface to have sub-photospheric fluxes. This is done by approximating flux integrals by sums over surface elements. The unknown ratios of spot to photospheric fluxes are determined by lasso or ridge regression procedures. It is found that almost all light curves can be modelled very accurately in this way. The usual, if rarely stated, caveat applies – star-spot models presented in the paper are not unique.

Résumé :
The synthesis of well-defined polymer architectures is of major importance for the development of complex functional materials. In this contribution, we discuss the synthesis of a range of multifunctional star-shaped tosylates as potential initiators for the living cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of 2-oxazolines resulting in star-shaped polymers. The synthesis of the tosylates was performed by esterification of the corresponding alcohols with tosyl chloride. Recrystallization of these tosylate compounds afforded single crystals, and the X-ray crystal structures of di-, tetra- and hexa-tosylates are reported. The use of tetra- and hexa-tosylates, based on (di)pentaerythritol as initiators for the CROP of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, resulted in very slow initiation and ill-defined polymers, which is most likely caused by steric hindrance in these initiators. As a consequence, a porphyrin-cored tetra-tosylate initiator was prepared, which yielded a well-defined star-shaped poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) by CROP as demonstrated by SEC with RI, UV and diode-array detectors, as well as by 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Résumé :
Complex colloidal fluids, depending on constituent shapes and packing fractions, may have a wide range of shear-thinning and/or shear-thickening behaviors. An interesting way to transition between different types of such behavior is by infusing complex functional particles that can be manufactured using modern techniques such as 3D printing. In this paper, we perform 2D molecular dynamics simulations of such fluids with infused star-shaped functional particles, with a variable leg length and number of legs, as they are infused in a non-interacting fluid. We vary the packing fraction (ϕ) of the system, and for each different system, we apply shear at various strain rates, turning the fluid into a shear-thickened fluid and then, in jammed state, rising the apparent viscosity of the fluid and incipient stresses. We demonstrate the dependence of viscosity on the functional particles’ packing fraction and we show the role of shape and design dependence of the functional particles towards the transition to a shear-thickening fluid.

The new heterometallic complex, aqua-1κO-bis(μ2-2-iminomethyl-6-methoxyphenolato-1κ2 O 1,O 6:2κ2 O 1,N)bis(thiocyanato-1κN)calcium(II)copper(II), [CaCu(C8H8NO2)2(NCS)2(H2O)], has been synthesized using a one-pot reaction of copper powder, calcium oxide, o-vanillin and ammonium thiocyanate in methanol under ambient conditions. The Schiff base ligand (C8H9NO2) is generated in situ from the condensation of o-vanillin and ammonia, which is released from the initial NH4SCN. The title compound consists of a discrete binuclear molecule with a {Cu(μ-O)2Ca} core, in which the Cu...Ca distance is 3.4275 (6) Å. The coordination geometries of the four-coordinate copper atom in the [CuN2O2] chromophore and the seven-coordinate calcium atom in the [CaO5N2] chromophore can be described as distorted square planar and pentagonal bipyramidal, respectively. In the crystal, O—H...S hydrogen bonds between the coordinating water molecules and thiocyanate groups form a supramolecular chain with a zigzag-shaped calcium skeleton.

Résumé :
In this paper, the interaction between a screw dislocation and an arbitrary shaped elastic inhomogeneity with different material properties than the surrounding matrix is investigated. The exact solution to this problem is derived by means of complex variable methods and Faber series expansion. Specifically, the conformal mapping function maps the matrix region surrounding the inhomogeneity onto the outside of a unit circle in the image plane, while the analytic function defined in the elastic inhomogeneity is expressed in terms of a Faber series expansion. Once the series form solution is obtained, the stress fields due to the screw dislocation can be obtained. Also the image force on the screw dislocation due to its interaction with the elastic inhomogeneity is derived. Three examples of a screw dislocation interacting with (1) an equilateral triangular inhomogeneity, (2) a square inhomogeneity, and (3) a five-pointed star-shaped inhomogeneity are presented to illustrate how the stiffness of the triangular, square or five-pointed star-shaped inhomogeneity can influence the mobility of the screw dislocation.

Explicit formulae up to the second order are derived for illustration, and a few comments on their consequences are added.

Résumé :
Abstract We present the star formation activity around the emission nebula Sh2-112. At a distance of ∼2.1 kpc, this H ii complex, itself 3 pc in radius, is illuminated by the massive star (O8 V) BD+45 3216. The associated molecular cloud extends in angular scales of 2.°0 × 0.°83, corresponding to linear sizes of 73 pc by 30 pc, along the Galactic longitude. The high-resolution (30″) extinction map reveals a chain of dust clumps aligned with the filament-like structure with an average extinction of A V ∼ 2.78 mag, varying up to a maximum of ∼17 mag. Our analysis led to identification of a rich population (∼500) of young (average age of ∼1 Myr) stars, plus a numerous number (∼350) of Hα emitters, spatially correlated with the filamentary clouds. Located near the edge of the cloud, the luminous star BD+45 3216 has created an arc-like pattern as the ionizing radiation encounters the dense gas, forming a blister-shaped morphology. We found three distinct young stellar groups, all coincident with relatively dense parts of the cloud complex, signifying ongoing star formation. Moreover, the cloud filament (excitation temperature ∼10 K) traced by the CO isotopologues and extending nearly ∼80 pc is devoid of ionized gas except at the dense cores (excitation temperature ∼28–32 K) wherein significant ionized emission excited by OB stars (dynamical age ∼0.18–1.0 Myr) pertains. The radial velocity is dynamic (median ∼−3.65 km s−1) along the main filament, increasing from Galactic east to west, indicating mass flow to form the massive stars/clusters at the central hubs.

Résumé :
Seventy-three mammary tumors and three mammary tissue specimens were examined to elucidate the expression of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-6 in the myoepithelial cells of canine mammary gland tumors. Morphologically, the myoepithelial cells were classified into four types: resting and proliferating cells inside the basement membrane, and spindle- and star-shaped cells proliferating in the outer area of the basement membrane. The characteristics of these myoepithelial cells were confirmed by immunohistochemistry using antibodies raised against keratin, cytokeratin 19, alpha-smooth muscle actin, and vimentin. In simple adenoma, a small number of resting myoepithelial cells was immunopositive for BMP-6. In complex adenomas and benign mixed tumors, all types of myoepithelial cells, depending in some cases on their specific location within the tumor, were immunopositive for BMP-6, but almost all of the tubular epithelial cells were immunonegative. Foci consisting of a proliferation of BMP-6–positive star- and spindle-shaped cells had mucinous stroma with marked hyaline and chondroid changes. In contrast, the foci with BMP-6–negative spindle- and star-shaped cells tended to have mucinous stroma without chondroid change. Several types of mesenchymal cells including chondrocytes, osteoblasts, and fibroblastlike cells in the mixed tumors, showed an intense immunopositive reaction for the BMP-6 antibody, and were located close to the ectopic cartilage and bone matrix. No significant immunoreactivity for BMP-6 was observed in most of the malignant mammary tumors; only one malignant mixed tumor was examined. All of these findings indicate that BMP-6 expression in myoepithelial cells may increase in complex adenomas and benign mixed tumors in canine mammary glands, and that BMP-6 expression is most intense in the vicinity of chondroid matrix in these tumors.

Résumé :
On the basis of star-shaped core sandwich panel, a novel sandwich panel with petal-triangle core (SP-PSC) was proposed to improve the negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) effect while retaining the characteristics of light weight and high strength. To study the complex structure more conveniently and quickly, a variational asymptotic method-based equivalent two-dimensional model (2D-EPM) was developed. The accuracy and efficiency of 2D-EPM were verified by the three-point bending experiment data and the 3D FE model results under different boundary and load conditions. The effects of the geometric parameters on the equivalent stiffness, buckling, natural frequency and NPR effect were also investigated. To increase the NPR of SP-PSC, the material of facesheet was changed from isotropic material to unidirectional CFPR material, and the influence of the material anisotropy on the NPR effect of SP-PSC was investigated. It is found that the NPR of SP-PSC increased first and then decreased with the increase in the fiber angle, reaching the maximum value at 40–50∘. At the same time, this law is applicable to SP-PSC with different material or geometric parameters. Finally, two improved cores, petal star-triangular core with X-shaped ligaments (PSC-X) and double-arc star-shaped core (DSC), were proposed and compared with SP-PSC in equivalent stiffness and recovered local fields to demonstrate their advantages. Compared with the original plate, the stress concentration and equivalent stiffness of the two improved PSCs significantly improved.

Résumé :
The peculiar T Tauri type star V1331 Cyg = LkH 120, located in the dark cloud Lynds 984, is a FU Orionis pre-outburst candidate (McMuldroch et al., 1993). This star embedded in circumstellar bright nebulosity is also surrounded by a helix-shaped nebula originated from the star. We obtained a series of speckle images of V1331 Cyg on the standard VBR system on July 18-20, 1994 using the Zeiss 1000 1.0 m telescope of the High Altitude Maydanak Observatory in Uzbekistan. We also used the results of Johnson’s system photometry of V1331 Cyg, made simultaneously at Maydanak Observatory with a 0.6 m reflector. Images were computer processed. Surface photometry of the star and surrounding nebula was made and isophotes were constructed. Fourier analysis of light curves for V1331 Cyg has shown 36.2 day periodic process (Melnikov, priv. comm.) which could be due to the presence of a circumstellar disk. Morphologic analysis revealed a complex fine structure of nebula, consisting of many bright knots and obviously show a jet-like outflow. According to spectral observations (Chavarria K. 1981; Penston & Keavey 1977) the line profiles of V1331 Cyg are P Cyg type only; there are no detections of anti-P Cyg profiles during the last 25 years observations. This indicates a stable mass loss (on average, 10−7M⊙/yr) with mean velocities about −410 km/s.

Résumé :
AbstractWe generalize the well-known result that a square traceless complex matrix is unitarily similar to a matrix with zero diagonal to arbitrary connected semisimple complex Lie groups G and their Lie algebras under the action of a maximal compact subgroup K of G. We also introduce a natural partial order on : x ≤ y if f (K · x) ⊆ f (K · y) for all f 2 *, the complex dual of . This partial order is K-invariant and induces a partial order on the orbit space /K. We prove that, under some restrictions on , the set f (K · x) is star-shaped with respect to the origin.

Résumé :
Based upon a new general vector-valued vector product, generalized complex numbers with respect to certain positively homogeneous functionals including norms and antinorms are introduced and a vector-valued Euler type formula for them is derived using a vector valued exponential function. Furthermore, generalized Cauchy–Riemann differential equations for generalized complex differentiable functions are derived. For random versions of the considered new type of generalized complex numbers, moments are introduced and uniform distributions on discs with respect to functionals of the considered type are analyzed. Moreover, generalized uniform distributions on corresponding circles are studied and a connection with generalized circle numbers, which are natural relatives of π, is established. Finally, random generalized complex numbers are considered which are star- shaped distributed.

Résumé :
After its formation, a young star spends some time traversing the molecular cloud complex in which it was born. It is therefore not unlikely that, well after the initial cloud collapse event which produced the star, it will encounter one or more low mass cloud fragments, which we call “cloudlets” to distinguish them from full-fledged molecular clouds. Some of this cloudlet material may accrete onto the star+disk system, while other material may fly by in a hyperbolic orbit. In contrast to the original cloud collapse event, this process will be a “cloudlet flyby” and/or “cloudlet capture” event: A Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton type accretion event, driven by the relative velocity between the star and the cloudlet. As we will show in this paper, if the cloudlet is small enough and has an impact parameter similar or less than GM*/v∞2 (with v∞ being the approach velocity), such a flyby and/or capture event would lead to arc-shaped or tail-shaped reflection nebulosity near the star. Those shapes of reflection nebulosity can be seen around several transitional disks and FU Orionis stars. Although the masses in the those arcs appears to be much less than the disk masses in these sources, we speculate that higher-mass cloudlet capture events may also happen occasionally. If so, they may lead to the tilting of the outer disk, because the newly infalling matter will have an angular momentum orientation entirely unrelated to that of the disk. This may be one possible explanation for the highly warped/tilted inner/outer disk geometries found in several transitional disks. We also speculate that such events, if massive enough, may lead to FU Orionis outbursts.

Résumé :
We consider complex-valued acoustic and elastic Helmholtz equations with the first order absorbing boundary condition in a star-shaped domain in ℜN for N ≥ 2. It is known that the elliptic regularity coefficients depend on the frequency ω, and have singularities for both zero and infinite frequency. In this paper, we obtain sharp estimates for the coefficients with respect to large frequencies. It is proved that the elliptic regularity coefficients are bounded by first or second order polynomials in ω for large ω. The crux of our analysis is to establish and make use of Rellich identities for the solutions to the acoustic and elastic Helmholtz equations. Our results improve the earlier estimates of Refs. 10 and 11, which were carried out based on layer potential representations of the solutions of the Helmholtz equations.

Résumé :
Surface spreading of meiotic material in Delena cancerides indicates that pairing initiation among metacentric chromosomes with monobrachial homology differs from that of telocentric forms and free metacentric bivalents and results in a star-shaped structure at pachytene. Distance cosegregation of the three X chromosomes in ancestral, telocentric forms is prefaced by a centric association early in prophase I. This centric association of the X chromosomes is conserved in metacentric races despite the presence of an X-autosome fusion.Key words: synaptonemal complex, translocation heterozygote, X chromosome, spider.

Résumé :
The synthesis of a new phenolphthalein azide derivative, which can be easily utilized in polymer analogous reactions, is presented. The subsequent cycloaddition reaction with propargyl-functionalized methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) yielded polymers bearing phenolphthalein as the covalently attached end group. In presence of per-β-cyclodextrin-dipentaerythritol, the formation of stable inclusion complexes was observed, representing an interesting approach towards the formation of star shaped polymers. The decolorization of a basic polymer solution caused by the complexation was of great advantage since this behavior enabled following the complex formation by UV–vis spectroscopy and even the naked eye.

Résumé :
A new species of crown-of-thorns sea star (CoTS), Acanthaster benziei sp. nov., is described based on four specimens collected from Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast where it inhabits coral reefs. Species delimitation from congeners in the species complex, i.e., Acanthaster planci, Acanthaster mauritiensis and Acanthaster cf. solaris, is primarily based on distinct and diagnostic mitochondrial DNA sequence regions. Species separation of Acanthaster benziei is additionally justified due to diagnostic morphological characters: fewer arms; narrower and thinner spines; fanned spine tips in primary and latero-oral spines; a wider tip or tapering shape in circumoral spines; and rhombus-shaped oral pedicellariae.

Résumé :
Star-shaped molecules with three mutually immiscible arms self-assemble to form a variety of novel structures, with conformations that attempt to minimize interfacial area between the domains composed of the different arms. The geometric frustration caused by the joining of these arms at a common centre limits the size and shape of each domain, encouraging the creation of complex and interesting solutions. Some solutions are tricontinuous, and these solutions (and others) share aspects of bicontinuous structures with amphiphilic assemblies as similar molecular segregation factors are at work. We describe both highly symmetric and balanced structures, as well as unbalanced solutions that take the form of intricately striped amphiphilic membranes. All these patterns can result in chiral assemblies with multiple networks.
