Résumé :
ABSTRACT ‘Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite’ photometry of 10 young stars with very complex periodic light curves is considered. Previous findings that these cannot be due to dark surface spots are re-evaluated by allowing arbitrarily shaped areas on the stellar surface to have sub-photospheric fluxes. This is done by approximating flux integrals by sums over surface elements. The unknown ratios of spot to photospheric fluxes are determined by lasso or ridge regression procedures. It is found that almost all light curves can be modelled very accurately in this way. The usual, if rarely stated, caveat applies – star-spot models presented in the paper are not unique.

Résumé :
This review summarizes recent advances in the design and synthesis of novel complex polymers with carbazole moieties using controlled radical polymerization techniques. We focus on the polymeric architectures of block copolymers, star polymers, including star block copolymers and miktoarm star copolymers, comb-shaped copolymers, and hybrids. Controlled radical polymerization ofN-vinylcarbazole (NVC) and styrene and (meth)acrylate derivatives having carbazole moieties is well advanced, leading to the well-controlled synthesis of complex macromolecules. Characteristic optoelectronic properties, assembled structures, and three-dimensional architectures are briefly introduced.

Résumé :
AbstractGiven a complex semisimple Lie algebra is a compact real form of g), let be the orthogonal projection (with respect to the Killing form) onto the Cartan subalgebra , where t is a maximal abelian subalgebra of . Given x ∈ g, we consider π(Ad(K)x), where K is the analytic subgroup G corresponding to , and show that it is star-shaped. The result extends a result of Tsing. We also consider the generalized numerical range f (Ad(K)x), where f is a linear functional on g. We establish the star-shapedness of f (Ad(K)x) for simple Lie algebras of type B.

Résumé :
The central idea here is that of integrating a complex function along an appropriate path in the complex plane. To this end we describe and categorise paths, including closed, simple, smooth and piecewise smooth paths (contours), and the operations on paths of concatenation and reversal (the opposite path). Connected sets, star-shaped sets and domains are explained. These ideas lead to the integral along a contour, and to the effects that concatenation and reversal have upon contour integrals. Path length is introduced and used in (over)estimating the modulus of a contour integral.

Résumé :
Panicum Miliaceum (common millet) is an ancient crop and spread widely across the world. The high survivability and adaptability of this species is attributed to the unique structure of the seedcoat. Recently, it was found the seedcoat has a fascinating complex microstructure with star-shaped epidermis cells, articulated together via wavy suture interfaces, to form a compact jigsaw puzzle-like layer. To explore the damage initiation and evolution during quasi-static uniaxial compression, finite element simulations were performed for full seeds, and single seedcoat and kernels. A parametric study was conducted for the seedcoat and kernel to explore the relationship between material properties and damage. The material properties of the seedcoat and kernel were obtained by nanoindentation testing. A Hashin progressive damage material model was used to capture damage evolution of the seedcoat, combined with a damage plasticity model for the kernel. The simulation results show the capabilities in modeling the damage of seeds.

Résumé :
Purpose – The rostrum of a paddlefish provides hydrodynamic stability during feeding process in addition to detect the food using receptors that are randomly distributed in the rostrum. The exterior tissue of the rostrum covers the cartilage that surrounds the bones forming interlocking star shaped bones. Design/methodology/approach – The aim of this work is to assess the mechanical behavior of four finite element models varying the type of formulation as follows: linear-reduced integration, linear-full integration, quadratic-reduced integration and quadratic-full integration. Also presented is the load transfer mechanisms of the bone structure of the rostrum. Findings – Conclusions are based on comparison among the four models. There is no significant difference between integration orders for similar type of elements. Quadratic-reduced integration formulation resulted in lower structural stiffness compared with linear formulation as seen by higher displacements and stresses than using linearly formulated elements. It is concluded that second-order elements with reduced integration and can model accurately stress concentrations and distributions without over stiffening their general response. Originality/value – The use of advanced computational mechanics techniques to analyze the complex geometry and components of the paddlefish rostrum provides a viable avenue to gain fundamental understanding of the proper finite element formulation needed to successfully obtain the system behavior and hot spot locations.
