Résumé :
AbstractThe canine photographs, videos, and photographic narratives of artist William Wegman frame questions of animal aesthetic agency. Over the past 30 years, Wegman's dog images shift in form and content in ways that reflect the artist's increasing anxiety over his control of the art-making process once he becomes identified, in his own words, as "the dog photographer". Wegman's dog images claim unique cultural prominence, appearing regularly in fine art museums as well as on broadcast television. But, as Wegman comes to use these images to document his own transition from dog photographer to dog breeder, these texts also reflect increasing restrictions on what I term the "pack aesthetics," or collaborative production of art and artistic agency, that distinguish some of the early pieces. Accounting for the correlations between multiple and mongrel dogs in Wegman's experimental video work and exclusively Weimaraner-breed dogs with human bodies in his recent work in large-format Polaroid photography, this article explores how Wegman's work with his "video dog star," his first Weimaraner dog Man Ray, troubles the erasure of the animal in contemporary conceptions of artistic authority.

This research is conducted by Asia Heritage Pekanbaru, which is one of recreational culinary and tourism in Pekanbaru. Asia Heritage offers comprehensive options of attractions, culinary, and photography spots. Still, it has considerable setbacks being less en-route information and signs and pictures to symbolize the tracks en route to the place. This research is on developing a Location Based Service (LBS) application that utilizes A Star Algorithm. This application can detect object position and generates the shortest effective routes to the designated spot by using A Star Algorithm's active reaction to the entitled class. This research later reveals an application named "Asia Heritage." It is a Photographic application that helps and gives the user the features of available photo-on spots, location, attractions, detailed information, and creative editing for a unique and magnifying experience for each user.

Abstract. Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) have taken thousands of high-resolution colour photographs of the aurora, which could be made useful for research if their pointing information could be reconstructed. We describe a method to do this using the star field in the images, and how the reconstructed pointing can then be used to georeference the images to a similar level of accuracy in existing all-sky camera images. We have used this method to make georeferenced auroral images taken from the ISS available and here describe the resulting data set, processing software, and how to access them.

ABSTRACT:In this work we will present a bibliographical review and presentation of the historical of the French semiotics that allows to approach the scientific image. We will illustrate with a brief analysis of scientific images presented in two Star Wars franchise films: the first photograph of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) and the second of StarWars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005), both directed by George Lucas. To that end, we will use tools from the theoretical framework proposed by the Semioticists Jean-François Bordron (2009), Jacques Fontanille (2007) and Maria Giulia Dondero (2010a). We will try to analyze the visual universe of the Star Wars films, since the narratives occur in a fictitious galaxy and several sideways space travels are constantly presented, thus, we will approach the vulgarization to be made of certain scientific images for the target audience so that they can be understood. Résumé :
Photography of the southern hemisphere for the Second Cape Photographic Catalogue (CPC2) was commenced in 1962 by R H Stoy, HM Astronomer at the Cape. During the following ten years nearly 6000 plates, each having two exposures and covering 4° × 4° with fourfold corner to centre overlap were obtained. All plates have been measured on the GALAXY measuring machine at the Royal Greenwich Observatory under the general direction of W Nicholson. A preliminary catalogue giving positions and magnitudes of more than 50 000 stars in the Cape Astrographic zone (−40° to −52°) has already been published (Nicholson et al. 1984), together with details of the programme. Measurement of the plates, initial identification of star images appearing on all overlapping plates, and photographic photometry have been carried out at RGO; the subseqent astrometric data reduction is being performed at Hamburg Observatory.

Résumé :
The first century of non-visual astronomical image detection in Hungary was devoted exclusively to photography. The most famous Hungarian astronomers and astrophysicists of the last century were the pioneers of astrophotography too. The very first exhaustive description of photography as a scientific method was the one by Konkoly-Thege about astronomical photography in 1887. In his book one can find some interesting images printed of the plates taken by his friend and colleague, the enthusiastic astrophotographer J. Gothard, who was the first to demonstrate that the well-known bright planetary in Lyra (M 57 or the Ring Nebula) contains an extremely faint central star. His discovery, which opened new fields for astrophysics, was contested for a long time because his foreign contemporaries were unable to repeat this feat of arms.

Résumé :
Aerial surveillance could be a useful tool for early detection and quantification of plant diseases, however, there are often confounding effects of other types of plant stress. Stemphylium leaf blight (SLB), caused by the fungus Stemphylium vesicarium, is a damaging foliar disease of onion. Studies were conducted to determine if near-infrared photographic images could be used to accurately assess SLB severity in onion research trials in the Holland Marsh in Ontario, Canada. The site was selected for its uniform soil and level topography. Aerial photographs were taken in 2015 and 2016 using an Xnite-Canon SX230NDVI with a near-infrared filter, mounted on a modified Cine Star—8 MK Heavy Lift RTF octocopter UAV. Images were taken at 15–20 m above the ground, providing an average of 0.5 cm/pixel and a field of view of 15 × 20 m. Photography and ground assessments of disease were carried out on the same day. NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), green NDVI, chlorophyll index and plant senescence reflective index (PSRI) were calculated from the images. There were differences in SLB incidence and severity in the field plots and differences in the vegetative indices among the treatments, but there were no correlations between disease assessments and any of the indices.

Résumé :
AbstractChanges in the double star database are highlighted, describing various methods of observation (both historically and those of the past few years) and their effectiveness in different regimes of separation space. The various niches for wide- and narrow-field work as they apply to double and multiple stars are examined and the different types of information which each can provide are described. Despite the significant growth of the double star database, much can still be done, such as finding lost pairs, filling in missing parameters so that observing programs can select all stars appropriate to their capabilities, or providing at least gross kinematic descriptions. After more than 20 years of successful work, speckle interferometry and conventional CCD astrometry have replaced filar micrometry and photography as preferred classical techniques. Indeed, most work in filar micrometry is now being done by amateurs. Work on pairs described as neglected in the last major WDS data release (2001) is given as a specific example. Finally, the continued need to publish data in classical double star parameters is also discussed.

Résumé :
Fandom is, as scholars in relevant areas of Media Studies and Sociology attest, a vibrant aspect of contemporary culture and influential in individuals' expression and construction of their identities. This thesis examines and endeavours to challenge how fandom, defined as "emotionally involved consumption of a given popular narrative or text," is conceived and received in contemporary art. It addresses misconceptions about art by four artists who explicitly express their fan identities in their artwork and examines how a finer understanding of fandom can enrich contemporary art discourse and illuminate the artists' works. Bringing together the fields of art criticism and cultural studies, the thesis explores the impact of contemporary artists' fandom on their depiction of celebrities and the critical reception these artworks have received. The principal artists whose works and fan identities are analysed are: Ryan McGinley (b. Ramsey, New Jersey, 1977-), Elizabeth Peyton (b. Danbury, Connecticut, 1965-), Karen Kilimnik (b. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1955-) and Stella Vine (b. Alnwick, England, 1969). In addition to these, art works by eleven other prominent late twentieth and early twenty-first century artists are presented as revealing contrasts. These artists, the principal artists and their comparisons, all are not only doing something interesting artistically; their work presents different approaches to expansive concerns about the nature and function of fans and celebrity in wider culture. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate how fandom manifests itself in artists' work, whether fan feelings are discernible in their artwork and how admissions of fandom, either through artists' public declarations or evidence in their art, influence critical interpretation of art and colours public perception of the artists themselves.

Thackrah, Andrew David. « A photographic survey of very low mass stars and brown dwarfs ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/27522.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis presents a study of the very low mass stars and hypothesised brown dwarf population that straddle the end of the stellar main sequence. The current status of the physical and observational arguments for the existence of sub-stellar objects is reviewed and the most recent numerical models are assessed. The suitability of wide-field photographic plates as detectors of this type of object is investigated, a 150 square degree photographic survey is described and subsequent candidate observations are presented. It is found that for conventional survey-grade U.K. Schmidt plates, the detection probability is sensitive to a range of assumptions concerning the initial mass function and density distribution function. For objects of spectral class later than M5, brown dwarfs may constitute up to one third of the objects detected, though this value is extremely sensitive to the photographic flux limit and is also found to decrease toward the plate limit if a time-dependent density function is used to describe the space distribution. The height of the Sun above the Galactic plane is considered and it is calculated that given the present estimates, an upper limit to the likely variation in number density is around 50%, corresponding to less than ten objects per square degree. Variations of the assumed initial mass function strongly affect the absolute values. The predicted age distribution of detectable brown dwarfs suggest that the vast majority of them will be less than 1 gigayear in age. The predicted spectral distribution begins around M4 to 5, peaking around M6 to M7. A photographic brown dwarf survey is feasible provided suitable follow-up measurements are carried-out to assess the ages of candidate objects. In mid-to-high latitude Galactic fields photographic plates are more suited to such a survey than current CCD detectors. A photographic survey is described making use of R and I band photographic plates from the U.K. and ESO Schmidt telescopes. The ROE's COSMOS and SUPERCOSMOS densitometers were used to measure the plates with candidates being selected by photometric colour. The techniques devised to match the image catalogues, photometrically calibrate the magnitude scale, automatically classify stellar and galaxian images and measure image displacements are described. The luminosity function derived from the survey is found to conform to previous determinations, showing no sign of increasing space density in the faintest bins.

Résumé :
Consider the construction of a perspective drawing. The perspective is made by drawing lines between a point of origin and several focal points. A series of lines connect the focal points to one another. The culmination of lines drawn from origin to focal point and focal point to focal point describes a place. The perspective is a view, or window into this place. The relationship of these three elements - the origin, focal points, and view - is analogous to the development of a architectural project. The origin is a point of beginning. Each architect brings a set of experiences and ideas to the project. The project springs from the architectsâ knowledge and ideals. The focal points involve the design development of a project. They relate to the areas of study and discovery for the project. Some foci are specific to a site or program. Some foci further investigate design intentions and how they relate to a given program. The links between foci create a place. Each drawing or description of this place is a view into the project. This thesis outlines the origins, focal points and views of a design for a visitorsâ center located in southwestern Virginia.

Résumé :
Stellar photography has found use in the calibration of mapping cameras and in determining the orientation of the stellar cameras serving as attitude sensors, e.g. the lunar mapping cameras on the NASA Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions. The equations used to relate the image measurements to the attitude of the camera are the collinearity equations of photogrammetry. These require initial approximations to the unknown attitude angles and the use of an iterative Gaussian correction algorithm. Simpler methods are described which do not require initial approximations to the unknown angles. Two of the methods are modifications of the Church method of space resection and the third is based on the mathematical formulation of a rotation transformation about a single axis. The methods require only two images for a solution. Modifications are given for using the methods with aerial and terrestrial photographs when the camera position is known and two or more control points are imaged on a photograph.

In this entry, Nicole Schneider is asking which role solidarity plays in possible readings of press photographs connected to the Black Lives Matter Movement. These images are able to engage in and defy assumptions held over others and start to question ostensibly fixed definitions of Blackness and difference. In critically playing with symbolic meanings and different references to Black lives and struggles, they unsettle fixed ideas and offer room for reflection. Thus, they are not per se acts of protest or solidarity but can function as first steps toward recognizing own positions, biases, and involvements that are usually unseen.

Résumé :
In this article, the author refers to one of the elite representatives of Romanian photographic art, Joseph Berman, a distinguished personality in the field of visual documentation, who contributed enormously to the development of ethnological field research. From a theoretical and practical perspective, a visual image immortalizes a moment in space and time, facilitating the recourse to the information it holds whenever needed. The photography can communicate to you several types of information, on the one hand, about the personality of the one who made this immortalization, revealing details about the preferences and skill of the master photographer, and on the other hand, it expresses realities, historical, social, ethnographic details of eternal temporal moments and habitats, motivating us to become critical consumers of visual images. For these reasons, the rhetoric of the image (Roland Barthes) becomes emblematic for ethnological research. Researchers in the field of Romanian ethnological photography delimit the period of flourishing (development) of visual documentation from the first half of the 20th century into two segments, the first up to Joseph Berman and the second – after him. With its affirmation in the photographic field, ethnological documentation took on color, becoming „alive”, loaded with deep meaning. The famous sociologist Dimitrie Gusti, appreciating his talent, called him: „co-author of the image of the Romanian village and peasant” and, rightly, did not accept a monographic campaign through the villages of Romania without Berman’s skill and talent, considering any other type of ethnological research compromised from the start.

Résumé :
Sinful Exotics of A. V. Novák Literary image of a journey to Asie in 1926–1927 Traveller and writer Archibald Václav Novák (1895–1979) rose to fame in the 1920s as the author of popular nov els and short stories inspired by a stay in Tahiti and the United States of America from 1919 to 1921. Sucesess of books and lectures allowed Novák to undertake another long journey. From October 1926 to April 1926 A. V. Novák visited Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Malaya, Singapore, Sumatra, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Japan. After returning home, Novák organized public lectures and published new novels and short stores inspored by the places he visited and the people he met. He also wrote a four-volume travelogue based on his travel diary. On his journey, Novák took not only still photographs, but short movies as well. After the communists took power in Czechoslovakia in 1948, Novák was purged from public life. No longer heralded as either a traveller or a writer, he was virtually consigned to oblivion. It was not until after 2000 that a study of the phenomenon of Czecho slovak emigration to Tahiti kindled renewed interest in him. In 2010, some of Novák’s previously unknown pho tographs were discovered and donated to the Náprstek Museum’s photographic collection, which is a part of the National Museum in Prague. Movies, diaries and the most of negatives by A. V. Novák have not been preserved, but there is a large number of glass slides used as an accom paniment of lectures. Photographic collection and books by A. V. Novák offer a valuable source of information about the non-Europen countries in 1920s and the ways, how they were presented to public in Czechoslovakia.

Résumé :
Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are observed in the northern latitudes during the summer months. The clouds, thought to be composed of crystalline ice, occur between 80- and 85-km altitude where the temperature of the mesopause can dip to 120 K. These clouds can be seen by ground-based observers when the sun is 6-16° below the horizon. This viewing geometry assures that the clouds will be illuminated by the sun while the lower atmosphere is dark. Imagery collected by Delta Star is presented as well as correlated ground-based and aircraft-based observations. Narrow field of view images obtained by Delta Star resemble NLC photographs made from the ground and from aircraft. Delta Star imaged NLCs on four of the six nights the experiment was attempted, three over central Alaska and one over Finland. Corroborating observations are available for three of these four nights. Altitude measurements made from Delta Star data place the NLCs at 81-km altitude with an estimated thickness of 4 km.

Résumé :
An efficient algorithm for the computation of monochromatic and polychromatic diffraction in the region of the focus of a converging wavefront has been devised for the Perkin-Elmer RAY-GODE optical design computer program. The algorithm generates a digitized map of intensity over an area defined by the user. With this map energy distribution can be integrated in different ways. Also, the program plots an analog map which closely resembles photographs of so-called aerial images of artificial stars observed under a microscope.

Résumé :
In this paper, the tip leakage vortex (TLV) structures in an axial flow pump were investigated by numerical and experimental methods. Based on the comparisons of different blade tip clearance size (i.e., 0.5 mm, 1mm and 1.5mm) and different flow rate conditions, TLV trajectories were obtained by Swirling Strength method, and simulated by modified SST k-ω turbulence model with refined high-quality structured grids. A high-speed photography test was carried out to capture the tip leakage vortex cavitation in an axial flow pump with transparent casing. Numerical results were compared with the experimental leakage vortex trajectories, and a good agreement is presented. The detailed trajectories show that the start point of tip leakage vortex appears near the leading edge at small flow rate, and it moves from trailing edge to about 30% chord span at rated flow rate. At the larger flow rate condition, the starting point of TLV shifts to the middle of chord, and the direction of TLV moves parallel to the blade hydrofoil. As the increasing of the tip size, the start point of TLV trajectories moves to the central of chord and the minimum pressure in vortex core is gradually reduced.

Résumé :
Abstract Investigations of the fuel injection process for large bore natural gas engines are performed on an off-engine test fixture. Two types of fuel injectors are studied, a low pressure (0.39 MPa) and a high pressure (3.5 MPa) gas injection valve. Planar laser induced fluorescence is implemented to image fuel jet concentration. The fuel jet from each injector is imaged from the start of injection though their valve-open duration. Effects of injection pressure, piston interaction, and injection event repeatability are investigated. The results are related to previous engine studies of high pressure fuel injection and Schlieren photography of in-cylinder events on a Cooper-Bessemer GMV large bore natural gas engines. The images indicate that the low pressure valve achieves more effective mixing during jet penetration. The high pressure injection event shows relatively little mixing during jet penetration. However, the high pressure jet has much more energy when it impinges on the piston. It is evident that the important time for mixing using high pressure injection occurs after piston impingement.

Résumé :
A study was completed to demonstrate that a guide vane field refurbishment process and improved maintenance practices are effective at preventing corrosion and lock-up of the guide vanes of Solars Taurus 60-7802S gas turbine operated in intermittent duty. A Taurus 60 engine located at Dominions Crayne compressor station was refurbished and operated over a five year period using maintenance practices to slow the build-up of corrosion. The visible condition of the VGV assembly on this Test Unit was monitored and the guide vane actuator force measured to assess if corrosion build-up was occurring. A second co-located Taurus 60 served as a Control Unit to validate that the environment and operating profile were conducive to corrosion build-up. The Control Unit was not modified with the exception that electric actuators were installed on both units so that the VGV actuator force could be measured. The engines logged over 18,000 hours of operation during the test period after which, both units were pulled for overhaul. A detailed inspection and assessment was completed with extensive photographic documentation of the condition of the hardware. The actuator force measured during the start sequence for each of the engines was compared. The Test Unit actuator force varied from 180 to 265 lbf, while the Control Unit had a considerably larger variation of 170 to 315 lbf. The Control Unit suffered a guide vane lock-up event in June of 2014.
