Résumé :
The monograph presents new results of the authors' long-term research on various topical issues of economic development. All the proposed new approaches are given in the broad context of already existing theories and models, as well as illustrated by numerous vivid examples from the history of different countries. Most of the topics covered belong to the category of the most burning social issues of our time, which gives the work an element of scientific "freshness" and discussion. All the fundamental theses are accompanied by the necessary models, equations, formulas, graphs and figures, but in general the material is not overloaded with technical details, which makes it quite accessible to any interested reader. The peculiarity of the monograph is that all its sections are based on the "paradox principle", the essence of which is to formulate the original problem in the most acute form, taking the form of a logical paradox. The range of topics under consideration covers the history of mankind from antiquity to the modern state. For example, why did humanity, which had been vegetating in the Malthusian trap for 10 thousand years, break out of it at the turn of the XVII and XVIII centuries? What is needed so that the economic growth that has begun does not "choke" in a short time and does not degenerate again into prolonged stagnation? How are economic growth and return on capital related? How are income inequality and the country's investment activity related? How to measure and in practice link the dialectical properties of institutions that presuppose order and freedom? Is it possible to diagnose "failures" in the regulatory activities of central banks? How to explain the transcendent technological creativity of Russian researchers and engineers with Russia's systematic technological lag behind Western countries? Does Russia have a chance to join the club of the most developed and prosperous countries in the world and what is needed for this? And much, much more. It is addressed to both professional specialists and everyone interested in modern problems of human development.

Résumé :
Abstract The researchers studying complex networks will acquire from this advanced modern book a number of new issues and ideas, not yet touched upon in other reference volumes. The book considers a wide range of networks and processes taking place on them, paying particular attention to the recently developed directions, methods, and techniques. It proposes a statistical mechanics view of random networks based on the concept of statistical ensembles, but approaches and methods of modern graph theory, concerning random graphs, overlap strongly with statistical physics. Hence mathematicians have a good chance to discover interesting things in this book, even though it does not contain mathematical proofs and trades off rigour for comprehension, brevity, and relevance. The book combines features of an advanced textbook, a reference book and a detailed review of the current state of the art. This book will be useful for undergraduate, master, and PhD students and young researchers from physics, multidisciplinary studies, computer science, and applied mathematics wishing to gain a serious insight into the principles of complex networks. The book can be used as a text in university courses on complex networks. It proposes to determined students not only a brief trip to the land of complex networks but an option to stay there forever.

Résumé :
This article discusses the connection between large N matrix models and critical phenomena on lattices with fluctuating geometry, with particular emphasis on the solvable models of 2D lattice quantum gravity and how they are related to matrix models. It first provides an overview of the continuum world sheet theory and the Liouville gravity before deriving the Knizhnik-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov scaling relation. It then describes the simplest model of 2D gravity and the corresponding matrix model, along with the vertex/height integrable models on planar graphs and their mapping to matrix models. It also considers the discretization of the path integral over metrics, the solution of pure lattice gravity using the one-matrix model, the construction of the Ising model coupled to 2D gravity discretized on planar graphs, the O(n) loop model, the six-vertex model, the q-state Potts model, and solid-on-solid and ADE matrix models.

Résumé :
This chapter provides an overview of issues relating to documentary evidence and document production. In any investor-state arbitration case, each party is responsible for producing the evidence required to prove its case. This evidence can be introduced either through the production of documentary evidence or through witness testimony. Similarly, a party may need certain documents from opposing counsel. Here, the fundamental understanding of the term ‘document’ is not restricted merely to ‘paper’—to actual documents written in words. Documentary evidence can appear in a wide range of styles (such as drawings, emails, pictures, charts, graphs, and many more) and a wide range of forms (physical, audio, visual, electronic, and more).

Résumé :
This chapter is entirely devoted to characterizing non-linear dynamics on multilayer networks. Special attention is given to recent results on the stability of synchronization that extend the Master Stability Function approach to the multilayer networks scenario. Discontinous synchronization transitions on multiplex networks recently reported in the literature are also discussed, and their application discussed in the context of brain networks. This chapter also presents an overview of the major results regarding pattern formation in multilayer networks, and the proposed characterization of multivariate time series using multiplex visibility graphs. Finally, the chapter discusses several approaches for multiplex network control where the dynamical state of a multiplex network needs to be controlled by eternal signals placed on replica nodes satisfying some structural constraints.

Eichbauer, Melodie H., dir. A Cultural History of Genocide in the Middle Ages. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350034761.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The period covered by this volume, roughly 800-1400, considers genocidal massacres and actions within the context of the pre-modern state, a time when the term “genocide” did not yet exist. In considering rhetoric, discrimination, and political and legal marginalization that impacted the lives of particular peoples, the volume takes as its premise that genocidal practices and massacres can occur when social dynamism and political change challenges the identity of a community. The case studies analysed in the individual chapters implicitly or explicitly draw upon the frameworks of comparative genocide scholars to explore genocidal massacres in the Middle Ages as localized phenomenon, even if these isolated outbursts do not graph onto the modern definition of genocide perfectly. Each contribution considers genocide as caused by settling national, religious, and ethnic differences; genocide as designed to enforce or fulfil an ideology; and genocide as designed to colonize. Collectively the essays move beyond the number of people killed to consider the steps taken against a people to erase them from the social and cultural fabric of society. It is hoped that this volume encourages us to think both about the legal structures of genocide but also about how the term can be more inclusive and expansive.

Klerman, Daniel. Quantitative Legal History. Sous la direction de Markus D. Dubber et Christopher Tomlins. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198794356.013.19.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Quantitative legal history is in a rather sorry state. Only about a quarter of recent works of legal history use even simple quantitative methods (such as tables or graphs), and articles or books with more sophisticated methods, such as regression analysis, are extremely rare. The infrequent use of quantitative techniques is also a missed opportunity. Scholars from other fields, including economics, sociology, and political science, are using statistics to analyse legal history. Such analysis is particularly helpful in understanding the effect of legal change and in analysing the influence of multiple factors on legislation, judicial decision-making, and citizen behaviour. This chapter first assesses quantitatively the use of quantitative methods in legal history. It then discusses a few examples of the successful use of numbers and statistics in recent books addressing legal historical topics. Finally, it looks to the future of quantitative legal history.

Résumé :
This book explains how to use the bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) model to design and implement parallel algorithms in the areas of scientific computing and big data. Furthermore, it presents a hybrid BSP approach towards new hardware developments such as hierarchical architectures with both shared and distributed memory. The book provides a full treatment of core problems in scientific computing and big data, starting from a high-level problem description, via a sequential solution algorithm to a parallel solution algorithm and an actual parallel program written in the communication library BSPlib. Numerical experiments are presented for parallel programs on modern parallel computers ranging from desktop computers to massively parallel supercomputers. The introductory chapter of the book gives a complete overview of BSPlib, so that the reader already at an early stage is able to write his/her own parallel programs. Furthermore, it treats BSP benchmarking and parallel sorting by regular sampling. The next three chapters treat basic numerical linear algebra problems such as linear system solving by LU decomposition, sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV), and the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The final chapter explores parallel algorithms for big data problems such as graph matching. The book is accompanied by a software package BSPedupack, freely available online from the author’s homepage, which contains all programs of the book and a set of test programs.
