Abstract. Subsidence can now be routinely mapped on a national scale thanks to ESA's Sentinel-1 sensors and advanced scalable SqueeSAR® processing. In order to be integrated into existing monitoring programmes, the SqueeSAR® datasets can be calibrated with GNSS measurements. The dense spatial coverage of SqueeSAR® deformation maps captures local deformation phenomena, and with appropriate calibration, can advance the understanding of regional deformation trends. The regular and reliable SAR image acquisitions by Sentinel-1, as well as significant improvements in the scalability of SqueeSAR® processing allow regular updates of deformation maps on a national scale. Filtering the large amount of data for relevant information is achieved by using an algorithm to detect changes in displacement trends.

Masouleh is one of the ancient cities located in a high mountainous area in Gilan province of northern Iran. The region is threatened by a hazardous landslide, which was last activated in 1998, causing 32 dead and 45 injured. Significant temporal decorrelation caused by dense vegetation coverage within the landslide area makes the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) for monitoring landslide movement very challenging. In this paper, we investigate the capability of three InSAR time-series techniques for evaluating creep motion on Masouleh landslide. The techniques are Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI), Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) and SqueeSAR. The analysis is done using a dataset of 33 TerraSAR-X images in SpotLight (SL) mode covering a period of 15 months between June 2015 and September 2016. Results show the distinguished capability of SqueeSAR method in comparison to 2 other techniques for assessing landslide movement. The final number of scatterers in the landslide body detected by PSI and SBAS are about 70 and 120 respectively while this increases to about 345 in SqueeSAR. The coherence of interferograms improved by about 37% for SqueeSAR as compared to SBAS. The same rate of displacement was observed in those regions where all the methods were able to detect scatterers. Maximum rates of displacement detected by SqueeSAR technique in the northern edge, older and younger part of the landslide body are about -39, -65 and -22 mm/y, respectively.

Multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MT-InSAR) techniques analyze a study area using a set of SAR image data composed of time series, reaching millimeter surface subsidence accuracy. To effectively acquire the subsidence information in low-coherence areas without obvious features in non-urban areas, an MT-InSAR technique, called SqueeSAR, is proposed to improve the density of the subsidence points in the study area by fusing the distributed scatterers (DS). However, SqueeSAR filters the DS points individually during spatial adaptive filtering, which requires significant computer memory, which leads to low processing efficiency, and faces great challenges in large-area InSAR processing. We propose a spatially adaptive filtering parallelization strategy based on the Spark distributed computing engine in a Hadoop distributed cluster environment, which splits the different DS pixel point data into different computing nodes for parallel processing and effectively improves the filtering algorithm’s performance. To evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method, we conducted a performance evaluation and accuracy verification in and around the main city of Kunming with the original Sentinel-1A SLC data provided by ESA. Additionally, parallel calculation was performed in a YARN cluster comprising three computing nodes, which improved the performance of the filtering algorithm by a factor of 2.15, without affecting the filtering accuracy.

Abstract. The analysis of the vertical movements of the soil in the Po River plane of the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy) was updated through an interferometric analysis referred to the 2011–2016 time-span. This activity is a continuation of previous studies on the state of knowledge of vertical soil movements in the same area, analyzed firstly by levelling and GNSS and more recently by SAR interferometry for the periods 1992–2000, 2002–2006, 2006–2011, on behalf of the Emilia-Romagna Region. The survey area analysed was approximately 13 300 km2, which corresponds to the territory of the regional plain. The interferometric dataset was calibrated through the use of velocity time series of several permanent GNSS stations. Among the 36 stations analysed, 22 were included in the study area: 16 were used for the calibration and 6 as check points). The velocities required for the calibration of the SAR analysis were calculated in the period following the important seismic events that struck the territory of the Emilia Romagna Region in May 2012. The interferometric analysis was carried out by TRE ALTAMIRA using the SqueeSAR™ technology. In particular, in order to update the interferometric dataset to 2016, it was necessary to perform a joint processing of the available RADARSAT-1 data and of the data acquired by the RADARSAT-2 satellite using a specific operating mode of the SqueeSAR™ algorithm known as stitching; this approach allowed the joint processing of images acquired in the same geometry by these two satellites. The study of the time series of the GNSS permanent stations used to provide the velocity datum to the interferometric analysis, is described, and the results of the SqueeSAR™ interferometric processing are reported. Statistical analyses on the spatial distribution and the type of scatterers have been performed during the screening and validation procedures of the dataset, and for the identification and removal of the outliers. Finally, the resulting map is described in order to analyse the measured soil movements with respect to the results obtained in past analyses, and the possible geological and human-induced causes, which could have produced them.

Decades of advancement in technologies pertaining to interferometric measurements have made it possible for us to make the first ever direct observation of gravitational waves (GWs). These GW emitted from violent events in the distant universe bring us crucial information about the nature of matter and gravity. In order for us to be able to detect GWs from even farther or weaker sources, we must further reduce the noise in our detectors. One of the noise sources that currently limits GW detectors comes from the fundamental nature of measurement itself. When a certain measurement reaches very high precision, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle comes into play. In GW detectors, this uncertainty manifests itself in the quantum nature of the light. Due to its quantum nature, light (or electromagnetic field) has an uncertain amplitude and phase.
Since the interferometric measurement is directly measuring the phase of light, this uncertainty poses a limit on the precision of GW measurements. Additionally, this measurement is also subject to quantum back-action, which arises due to the radiation pressure force fluctuations caused by the amplitude uncertainty (QRPN). In order to lower this quantum noise, GW detectors plan to use squeezed light injection. Squeezed light is a special quantum state of light which has lower uncertainty in a certain quadrature, at the expense of higher uncertainty in the orthogonal quadrature. In this thesis, I focus on using radiation-pressure-mediated optomechanical (OM) interaction to generate squeezed light. Creating squeezed states by using optomechanical interaction opens up possibilities for engineering truly wavelength-independent squeezed light sources that may also be more compact and robust than traditionally used non-linear crystals.
Additionally, this project inherently involves studying the OM interaction, which is the mechanism for back-action noise in GW detectors. Our basic setup is a Fabry-Perot cavity with a movable mirror. We start by understanding the physics of this system in the presence of realistic imperfections like losses and classical noise. This study furthers the previous work done on OM squeezing in an ideal Fabry-Perot cavity. We use this understanding of the system to optimize the experimental parameters to obtain the most possible squeezing in a broad audio-frequency band at room temperature. This optimization involves choosing the optical properties of the cavity, and the mechanical properties of the oscillator. We then present the experimental implementation of this design, and subsequent observation of QRPN as well as OM squeezing from the optimized design.
These observations are the first ever direct observation of a room temperature oscillator's motion being overwhelmed by vacuum fluctuations. More so, this is also the first time it has been shown in the low frequency band, which is relevant to GW detectors, but poses its own technical challenges, and hence has not been done before. Being in the back-action dominated regime along with optimized optical properties has also enabled us to observe OM squeezing in this system. That is the first direct observation of quantum noise suppression in a room temperature OM system. It is also the first direct evidence of quantum correlations in a audio frequency band, in a broadband at non-resonant frequencies.

In the last decade satellite remote sensing has become an effective tool for monitoring geo-hazard-induced ground motions, and has been increasingly used by scientific community. Geo-hazards direct and indirect costs are currently rising, causing serious socio-economics and casualty losses. Therefore, creating a priority list turns out to be essential to highlight the most relevant ground deformations and to better focus the risk management practices at regional scale. The Sentinel-1 constellation, thanks to the 6-days repeatability and the free availability of the data, allows to easily update the geo-hazard-induced ground motions, compared to other kind of satellite sensors. In this PhD Thesis, the potentialities and drawbacks of the interferometric technique have been presented and then exploited to define three different procedures, applied in different environment and at different scales, for the use of multi-band PSI products. This thesis work represents the main outcome of a three yearslong activity at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence, Centre technologic de telecomunicacions de Catalunya research center and TRE-Altamira (Barcelona). The main goal is to test and evaluate the potential and applicability of space-borne SAR data, processed by means of different PSI approaches, as operational tools for the characterization of geohazards in different geological and geomorphological environments. For this work, two Italian test areas at regional scale are been selected: Tuscany and Valle d’Aosta Regions. Furthermore a site at detailed scale was analyzed, the mining area of Saline di Volterra (Tuscany). The main goal of the thesis hinges on illustrating different methodologies that could be merged in one single workflow to detect active moving areas, characterize them in detail and cross-correlate the satellite data with ancillary information, implementing the obtained products and results in the Civil Protection chain and geohazard risk management. The proposed case studies were intended as examples, although referred to different environments and geohazards, for the working approaches to be used from regional to detailed scale. For the Tuscany Region, there were exploited Sentinel-1 images for active moving areas detection at regional scale. A hotspot-like methodology was used, exploiting the temporal repetitiveness of Sentinel-1 data analysed by means of the SqueeSAR algorithm to create deformation maps in three different periods with a 6 months update. Thanks to a filtering approach based on a velocity threshold, it was possible extract a total of 652 deformation clusters, divided in three different periods, to study their spatial and temporal evolution. The final output is a flexible geo-database that contains interferometric parameters, geographical, geomorphological and geological information, a brief evaluation of the possible triggering cause and information about the temporal evolution of the moving areas. For the Valle d’Aosta Region, it was used a clustering analysis applied to a large stack of Sentinel-1 satellite interferometric products that has been derived using the SqueeSAR algorithm. Valle d’Aosta Region is an alpine region characterized by a wide spectrum of mass wasting phenomena. The approach, based on simple GIS tools and indexes, allowed detecting 277 moving areas above the selected velocity threshold. Overall, landslides (complex, rotational, Deep Seated Gravitational Slope Deformation (DSGSD)), rock glacier evolution and detrital-related deformation are responsible for the detected motions. In mountainous areas, where the field data collection is sometimes limited or impossible, the presented approach is intended to create priority areas to be focused for further investigations. In this way, it is possible to increase, with reduced economic and personnel costs, the “landslide knowledge” of all the actors involved within the landslide risk management chain at regional scale. In this context, easily updatable clustering methodologies are very useful tools for MTInSAR data analysts; it is possible to obtain reliable results in a fast way and to compare them with previous results. Well knowing the limitations of the interferometric technique, especially in mountain regions, it is reasonable to rely on clustering approaches in order to derive multi-temporal synoptic views of ground motions over wide areas. For the Saline di Volterra case, it is presented a local scale application of multi-temporal satellite interferometry targeting a solution mining area in southern Tuscany. The surroundings of Saline di Volterra host several brine wells that pump water into a salt level at a depth ranging between 60 and 400 m below surface. The mining activity has a relevant environmental impact in terms of depletion of the water resources and in terms of ground motion, creating several sinkholes which were mapped through multi-temporal analysis of orthophotos. The deformation map, obtained through the analysis of Sentinel-1 images, revealed the presence of several subsidence bowls, sometimes corresponding to sinkholes formed in the recent past. The subsidence bowls have a common deformation pattern, with LOS velocities increasing forward the center of the bowl. The temporal evolution of the measurement points can vary a lot on case-basis. Finally, a correlation between LOS velocities and age of formation of sinkholes have been found. The Sentinel-1 images were processed with an ad hoc processing chain, elaborated in Centre Technologic Telecomunicacions Catalunya research center (Barcelona). With this new procedure, it was possible to detect fast deformation rates that are usually puzzling to solve in mining areas. This detailed scale and target-oriented approach demonstrated its capability to provide useful information in terms of density of measurement points and quality of the time series.

Esta dissertação consiste na elaboração de um plano de negócios para uma nova empresa que comercializa utensílios inovadores. A GreenCitrus será uma empresa que desenvolve e comercializa novos produtos através da internet. Um objeto desenvolvido no âmbito deste projeto é o Squeazy, um espremedor manual de citrinos com características únicas, que será o ponto de partida do negócio. O mercado onde se vai inserir a GreenCitrus é toda a população mundial que realiza compras via internet, sendo que o foco principal é a população portuguesa que, de um modo geral, gosta de experimentar coisas novas e inovadoras. Cada vez mais indivíduos utilizam a internet para variados fins, um deles, o comércio. A escolha deste tema está fortemente relacionada com o primeiro ano de mestrado, onde o autor desenvolveu um especial interesse pela inovação, em particular através da disciplina de desenvolvimento de novos produtos. Antes da elaboração deste plano de negócios, mas no âmbito deste projeto, o autor dedicou-se ao desenvolvimento do Squeazy, através de desenhos e protótipos até chegar ao produto final. Seguindo-se a elaboração de uma descrição detalhada do produto com o fim de enviar um pedido de patente ao Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI). Da mesma forma, pretende-se a médio-prazo investir no desenvolvimento de novos produtos que se enquadrem na estratégia da empresa. O sucesso da empresa depende claramente de uma estratégia de comunicação bem definida que seja clara e objetiva para chegar ao target definido. Daí ser necessário um constante investimento em Marketing e publicidade. Por fim, este plano de negócio apresenta cálculos que traduzem o retorno financeiro expectável, sendo este instrumento essencial para a tomada de decisão por parte do empreendedor (autor da tese) no investimento neste projeto.
This dissertation is the development of a business plan for a new company who sells innovative products. GreenCitrus is a company that develops and sells new products on the internet. An object already created is the Squeazy, a manual juicer with unique characteristics which will be the starting point of the business. The market where GreenCitrus will be inserted is the entire world's population that purchase on Internet. The main focus is the Portuguese population, in general they like to try new and innovative things. The choice of this theme is strongly related with author’s master degree first year. He has developed a special interest on innovation, in particular through new product development discipline. Before the establishment of this business plan the author devoted the Squeazy, through drawings and prototypes to reach the final product. Followed by the preparation of a detailed description of the product in order to submit a patent application to the Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI). The Company intends to invest in developing new products which fit the company's strategy. GreenCitrus’ success clearly depends on a well-defined communication strategy that is clear and objective to reach the set target. That means a constant investment in marketing and advertising. Finally, this business plan will present calculations that translate the expected financial return which is an essential tool for decision making by the entrepreneur (author of the thesis).

AbstractDetermining upper bounds on the time complexity of a program is a fundamental problem with a variety of applications, such as performance debugging, resource certification, and compile-time optimizations. Automated techniques for cost analysis excel at bounding the resource complexity of programs that use integer values and linear arithmetic. Unfortunately, they fall short when execution traces become more involved, esp. when data dependencies may affect the termination conditions of loops. In such cases, state-of-the-art analyzers have shown to produce loose bounds, or even no bound at all.We propose a novel technique that generalizes the common notion of recurrence relations based on ranking functions. Existing methods usually unfold one loop iteration, and examine the resulting relations between variables. These relations assist in establishing a recurrence that bounds the number of loop iterations. We propose a different approach, where we derive recurrences by comparing whole traces with whole traces of a lower rank, avoiding the need to analyze the complexity of intermediate states. We offer a set of global properties, defined with respect to whole traces, that facilitate such a comparison, and show that these properties can be checked efficiently using a handful of local conditions. To this end, we adapt state squeezers, an induction mechanism previously used for verifying safety properties. We demonstrate that this technique encompasses the reasoning power of bounded unfolding, and more. We present some seemingly innocuous, yet intricate, examples where previous tools based on cost relations and control flow analysis fail to solve, and that our squeezer-powered approach succeeds.

Noise suppression in an interferometer, employing a nonlinear Mach-Zehnder squeezer, was proposed[1] and experimentally confirmed[2,3]. The noise characteristics of this squeezer were derived for a coherent state input[4]. It may be advantageous to put the squeezer directly into a modelocked laser resonator where higher power pulses may be utilized. In this case the light acquires a large phase uncertainty. Thus, it is of interest to analyze squeezing with an input state of large phase uncertainty. One approach is to expand the input state in terms of coherent states[5]. Another approach is to use number states, which have total phase uncertainty and also present some interesting quantum features.
