La ricerca si propone di indagare il ruolo del consenso nell’ambito degli sponsalia entro una prospettiva diacronica, partendo dal fidanzamento ‘arcaico’ per giungere a quello ‘classico’.
Particolare attenzione viene riposta alla tutela processuale della sponsio di fidanzamento di età arcaica e al cambio di mentalità intorno al 90 a.C., che porta l’ordinamento a negarla giudicandola contraria alla morale. Viene quindi presa in esame, con riferimento all’età classica, la rilevanza del consenso dei diretti interessati, espresso con varie modalità, al fine di delineare un sistema di responsabilità consapevole di tipo ‘pre-familiare’.<br>The present research aims at investigating the role of agreement on the field of the "sponsalia" in a diachronic perspective, from the archaic betrothal to the classical one.
Special attention is paid to the legal protection of the betrothal "sponsio" in archaic age and to the change of mentality occurred around 90 BC, which led the legal system to deny that, because it was deemed contrary to morality. With regard to the classical age, the relevance of the variously expressed agreement of the people involved has been taken into consideration in order to delineate a premarital kind of "informed liability" system.

Sports sponsorship accounts for the majority of global sponsorship revenue and is a mutually beneficial business relationship between two parties -the sponsor and the sponsee. The most successful sports sponsorships are based on a good relationship between the sports entity and its sponsor, however, the relationship between the sponsor and the sponsee is difficult to understand due to the lack oftheoretical and managerial implications of the area. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of how sport entities and their existing sponsors manage their interorganizational relationship. In order to reach the stated purpose, research questions are derived focusing on the exchange and the maintenance of the sport sponsor relationship. Based on the research questions, an extensive literature review is conducted landing in a proposed conceptual framework. A qualitative case study approach is used to collect data through semi-structured interviews with two national and two international professional sports organizations. The result of the study shows how the existing relationship between sports organizations and their sponsors is managed. The most valued aspect in a sport sponsorship relationship is to develop a long-term partnership and that the parties involved are committed to the relationship and work actively to make it mutually beneficial. The sponsors are for the most partincluded in the activities of the sport entity, which posits high-quality communication as an essential tool in maintaining a successful relationship. In order to maximize the value generated from the offered benefits, the partners must be willing to utilize the full potential in participating in the sport entity’s various activities.

Companies increasingly believe that sponsorship, and in particular sport sponsorship, can help them achieve their respective strategic objectives. Achieving sales objectives are especially important in the context of sport sponsorship, given that managers are under increasing pressure to justify their sponsorship expenditure, and that over two-thirds of all sponsorships are directed towards sports properties. However, isolating a sponsorship s contribution to a company s sales figures is difficult to accomplish, and even if this were possible, understanding the mechanisms behind consumers behavioural responses to that respective sponsorship would still constitute a challenge. Hence, understanding consumers behavioural purchase intentions, and what drives these intentions within sponsorship contexts, is of paramount importance. That said, little is known about what drives consumers purchase intentions in sponsorship settings. A greater understanding of consumers behavioural intentions within concurrent sponsorship settings is necessary. Concurrent sponsorships involve multiple brands sponsoring a property at the same time. As such, they are a more realistic and common sponsorship context than simple sponsor-sponsee dyads are. It is important to examine concurrent sponsorships because a collective is formed when multiple sponsors are involved. In turn, social psychology highlights that a collective is characterised by the degree to which its a priori members are perceived as a group. Groups are perceived qualitatively differently to dyads, and can also be perceived differently to the sum of their respective constituent parts. Moreover, the extent to which people perceive a collective as a group can impact upon their subsequent evaluations of that group and that group s actions. Consequently, consumers evaluations of a sponsee s concurrent sponsors and the sponsee itself may be affected by how concurrent sponsorships are perceived, which in turn may affect consumers behavioural intentions. Hence, it is imperative that concurrent sponsorship contexts are investigated. That said, there is scant literature investigating concurrent sponsorships, with sponsorship research historically focussing on sponsor-sponsee dyadic settings. This thesis contributes to our understanding of concurrent sponsorship settings of major sporting events by examining how people s perceptions of concurrent sponsors entitativity influence both their purchase intentions towards a focal concurrent sponsor and their sponsee equity evaluations. An online questionnaire, utilising sponsorship vignettes (scenarios) as part of a factorial survey design, was sent to respondents of a mid-sized UK-based university. Scenarios were used to manipulate respondents into perceiving two concurrent sponsorship settings: a concurrent official providers sponsorship setting and a concurrent official financers sponsorship setting. Hypotheses were tested through Lisrel 8.71 where confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) were performed. The results in both sponsorship contexts (concurrent official providers and concurrent official financers ) appear to be very similar. Specifically, the results suggest that people s entitativity perceptions are positively related to their sponsee equity evaluations, which in turn are positively associated with people s purchase intentions. Entitativity is also positively associated with consumers intentions to purchase from a concurrent sponsor but only when consumers attribute high levels of sincerity towards that sponsor. The one significant difference between the two sponsorship types (official providers and official financers) in the study concerns how sincerity affects the entitativity-sponsee equity relationship. People s attributions of sincerity moderate the relationship between entitativity and sponsee equity in the official provider concurrent sponsorship context, such that the entitativity-sponsee equity relationship becomes stronger. However, people s attributions of sponsor sincerity do not affect the entitativity-sponsee equity relationship in the official financer concurrent sponsorship context. A post-hoc examination of repondents entitativity ratings also suggests people perceive official providers as being significantly more entitative than they do official financers. This study makes a number of contributions to both theory and management practice. For example, the study demonstrates how the entitativity concept, found within social psychology, can be applied to concurrent sponsorship settings, such that people s behavioural intentions towards a sponsee and a concurrent sponsor, are influenced by their concurrent sponsor entitativity perceptions. Following this, concurrent sponsors and sponsee rights holders should consider how sponsors can foster people s entitativity perceptions whilst at the same time communicate sincere motives for their respective sponsee sponsorships, as sincerity perceptions are important too. This would not only help the sponsee s rights holder by increasing sponsee equity but the results also suggest that people are more likely to purchase from a concurrent sponsor. That said, this may lead to further difficulties between sponsors and sponsees rights holders. For example, sponsees rights holders may be perceived as needing sponsorships as opposed to being able to command them, which in turn could lead to difficult sponsorship negotiations between rights holders and potential sponsors. Second, the business and marketing acumens of sponsees rights holders are generally regarded to be lower than that of sponsors . In fact, sponsors often act independently of sponsees rights holders when making sponsorship leveraging decisions and investments, and this is partly because sponsees rights holders are not proactive enough in working with the sponsors. Therefore, if sponsees rights holders do not have the capabilities to help sponsors foster entitative and sincere sponsorship contexts, sponsors may be unwilling to renew their sponsorship deals or even set up their own events.

I test canonical theories in the preference literature - evolutionary psychology, social role theory, and social exchange theory - using group mean comparisons to replicate basic sex differences in spouse preferences. I find that, consistent with past studies, males prefer attractiveness and females prefer resources in potential partners, and in general, we prefer partners who are similar, rather than different, to us. I also find that males who anticipate enacting the "traditional" male role of "provider" within their marriage tend to prefer spouses who would fulfill the caregiver role, compared to males who do not anticipate such "traditional" gender divisions within the family. Interestingly, females who anticipate the "traditional" caregiving role do not in turn prefer spouses who fulfill the "provider" role; they instead prefer a spouse who is family-oriented, as they themselves are. I further test four new theoretical derivations and methodological assessment techniques. First, I expand the test of social exchange theory to include a wide array of personality characteristics and find similarity between how respondents see themselves and the types of characteristics they prefer in a spouse. Second, I include an assessment of gender endorsement - how respondents see themselves in terms of characteristics we commonly associate with masculinity and femininity. Interestingly, I don't find the predicted complimentarity - that highly masculine individuals prefer highly feminine spouses and vice versa. I find instead strong homogamy effects, such that respondents with masculine self-perceptions prefer spouses who also embody those masculine traits, and respondents with feminine self-perceptions prefer spouses who also identify with feminine traits. Third, my data includes a wider age range of unmarried respondents than nearly all other preference studies, so I am able to test preference differences by age. I find that older unmarried adults are generally less "particular" in their preferences, compared to those unmarried adults still in college. Despite my predictions that age would be positively related to the desire for spouse characteristics associated with "growing up," essentially, age appears to be negatively related or unrelated to most spouse preferences. Fourth, I include factor analysis techniques that both replicate a past research study (which was pioneering for the field), and broach the possibility for latent variable assessment using a wider array of preference dimensions than have been previously considered. I find evidence of several underlying preference constructs which could, and should, be taken into account when conducting future preference studies.

År 2007 undersökte Haygood reklam i amerikanska podcasts för att ta reda på dess mönster, och år 2010 valde McGowan att göra en liknande studie för att ta reda på om Haygoods teorier fortfarande stämde. Det visade sig att Haygoods teorier fortfarande var aktuella och på så vis hade teorierna hållit över en längre tid. Därmed är denna studiens syfte att undersöka om de amerikanska reklammönsterna går att applicera på reklam i svenska podcasts, trots att Sverige har fler lagar än USA kring hur reklam får framföras. Vidare kommer studien att undersöka lyssnarens attityd till reklam i podcasts, detta för att ta reda på vad lyssnaren anser om podcastreklams utformning och placering. Studien är genomförd med både en kvantitativ- och en kvalitativ metod. För att undersöka reklammönstret i svenska podcasts tillämpades en kvantitativ metod där podcasts på iTunes topp tio studerades under sex veckor. Samtliga podcasts analyserades och dokumenterades och jämfördes därefter med resultatet från McGowans studie (2010), då denna studien är den senare. Resultatet visade att the bookend effect (sv. bokstödseffekten) också finns i svenska podcasts, den förekommer däremot mer i amerikanska podcasts. Hur reklamen framförs påminner också om den amerikanska, exempelvis ”Vi är denna veckan sponsrade av…” kan liknas med ”Support for this podcast comes from...”. Andra reklammönster som går att applicera på svensk podcastreklam är självförsörjandereklam och återkommande sponsorer. För att undersöka lyssnarens attityd till podcastreklam tillämpades en kvalitativ metod i form av individuella intervjuer. Respondenterna fick lyssna på reklamutdrag från de undersökta podcasts och därefter svara på frågor kring reklamen. Det framkom att reklam är störande oavsett dess utformning och placering. Sponsrat prat, det vill säga när programledaren själv pratar, föredras framför traditionella reklamavbrott. Respondenterna föredrog att reklamen kom i början på avsnittet men att reklam i mitten var ok om det var sponsrat prat. Detta berodde på att de inte kände sig lika avbrutna med sponsrat prat som med exempelvis traditionellt reklamavbrott.<br>In 2007, Haygood examined US podcast ads to find out its pattern, and in 2010 McGowan chose to do a similar study to find out if Haygood's theories were still correct. It turned out thatHaygood's theories were still up to date and thus the theories had lasted for a long time. Therefore, this study's purpose is to investigate whether the U.S. advertising patterns can beapplied to advertisements in Swedish podcasts, even though Sweden have more laws than the US on how to advertise. In addition, the study will investigate the listener’s attitude towards advertising in podcasts, to find out what the listener considers about ad type and its placement in podcasts. This study was conducted through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodology. To examine advertising patterns in Swedish podcasts, a quantitative method was applied, and podcasts on iTunes top ten were studied for six weeks. All podcasts were analyzed and documented and then compared with the results from McGowan's study (2010), since this one is the latest. The result showed that the bookend effect also exists in Swedish podcasts, however it appears more in US podcasts. How the advertisement is performed is also similar to the US podcasts, for example, "We’re this week sponsored by..." is similar to "Support for this podcast comes from...". Other advertising patterns that can be applied to Swedish podcasts are selfsufficient advertisements and recurring sponsors. To investigate the listener’s attitude towards podcast advertising, a qualitative method was used in the form of individual interviews. Respondents listened to a selection of advertisements from the top ten on iTunes, and was then interviewed about the advertisements. It was found that advertising is disturbing regardless of its type and placement. Sponsorship, when the program leader speaks, is preferred over traditional advertising. It is also preferred that the advertisement is placed in the beginning of a podcast, but sponsorship can make advertising placed in the middle of a podcast ok, because it can feel less interrupting with sponsorship compared to traditional advertisement.

Viene proposta una lettura dei Promessi sposi alla luce del principio della complessità, sviluppato secondo l’ottica della teoria sistemica. Il raffronto tra due testi teorici: la Lettre à M.R C*** sur l’unité de temps et de lieu dans la tragédie e Del romanzo storico e, in genere, de’ componimenti misti di storia e d’invenzione ha evidenziato come l’idea di complessità, e dunque di relazione, insita nello sviluppo del concetto di verosimiglianza, sia alla base del pensiero critico manzoniano fin dai suoi esordi e lo abbia inquietato negli anni.
È stata ricercata nel testo la progressiva riflessione di Manzoni sul concetto di verosimile; operazione che ha suggerito una traccia interpretativa applicabile al Romanzo, orientata a coglierne una dimensione profondamente complessa e articolata, attraverso la quale l’autore ha guidato i suoi lettori alla contemplazione della Verità incarnata nelle vesti del vero storico, sotto la forma di una promessa sponsale.
È stata riscontrata una relazione tra le tre parti strutturali che sono state identificate nel volume finito di consegnare alle stampe dallo stesso Manzoni nel 1842 (la ‘quarantana’): l’Introduzione, i trentotto capitoli, la Storia della colonna infame, ravvisando in questa costruzione, l’architettura in cui Manzoni ha, con maestria, incastonato il suo Vero.<br>The Betrothed was analysed from a point of view focusing on complexity starting from systemic theory.
The comparison between two theoretical texts: Lettre à M.R C*** sur l’unité de temps et de lieu dans la tragédie and Del romanzo storico e, in genere, de’ componimenti misti di storia e d’invenzione, highlighted how the idea of complexity, and consequently of relationship at the core of the concept of lifelikeness, has underlied Manzoni’s criticism since its beginning and has troubled it in time.
Manzoni’s progressive reflection on verisimilitude has been researched: the which has given an interpretation applied to The Novel, to a complex and articulated dimension through which Manzoni guided the readers to the contemplation of Truth embodied in historical reality, in the form of a betrothal.
The ‘quarantana’, the novel given to the publisher in 1842 by Manzoni, has been analysed and a relationship between its three structural parts has been identified: l’Introduzione, thirty-eight
chapters , la Storia della colonna infame. In its frame was found the architecture in which Manzoni brilliantly set his Truth.

The giant barrel sponge, Xestospongia muta is an iconic and essential species of the coral reefs in South Florida. The sponge has primary roles providing ecosystem services and creating unique habitats for diverse microbial communities. On April 27, 2012 an outbreak of Sponge Orange Band Disease (SOB) was detected off the coast of South Florida. The disease begins with sponge bleaching, followed by mesohyl or “mesohyl” necrosis and often total mesohyl disintegration. Sampling from two diseased populations at Boynton Beach and Fort Lauderdale, FL took place on May 11th and May 29th, 2012. Each of the nine diseased sponges from Boynton Beach and the five diseased sponges from Fort Lauderdale had three separate mesophyl samples collected to examine the effects of disease progression on the microbial community. These included healthy mesohyl from a diseased sponge (HoD), the boundary layer which captured the advancing line of diseased mesohyl (BL) and diseased mesohyl from a diseased sponge (D). Mesohyl from three sponges with no visible signs of SOB disease were also collected from each sampling location to use for healthy controls (HC). Sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was performed on all of these samples via the “454” pyrosequencing on a Titanium GS FLX platform. The microbial communities associated with the diseased samples revealed a microbiome shift that followed the progression of Sponge Orange Band Disease (SOB) and was dominated by Bacteroidetes, Protebacteria and Chloroflexi. No singular or group of microbes were solely found within the infected mesohyl of Xestospongia muta from both sampling site populations; therefore there is no unequivocal candidate as a definite microbial causative SOB agent. But there were bacteria associated with disease progression that included Armatimonadetes, Caldithrix, Chlorobi, Fibrobacteres, Fusobacteria, GN02, KSB3, OP1, OP2, OP8, Planctomycetes, SR1, TM6, Tenericutes, Verrucomicrobia, WPS-2 and ZB3. Verrucomicrobia and Plantomycetes increased significantly within the D and the BL populations, which was consistent within all the diseased sponges. This study provides a deep sequencing profile of microbial communities within Xestospongia muta affected with SOB Disease and provides a new insight into the sponge healthy microbiome.

Drink! The Marketing History of The Coca-Cola Company: A Modernization Perspective examines the development of The Coca-Cola Company’s marketing history, from the founding of the company in 1886 until today. The Coca-Cola Company has been superior on the market for over a century. It has also developed along with the urbanisation of its society, which is interesting in a modernization perspective. The essay investigates the marketing strategies of the company, with focus on three themes: gender, sponsorship and interactive culture phenomenon. The examination is based on an analysis of six significant photo- and TV advertisements, two from each theme. The research is based on profound literature studies combined with studies of visual culture. With the work of this essay, we have come to the conclusion that The Coca-Cola Company has reached its power and fame because of it’s creative marketing strategies. Hence, of the fact that the company has developed together with the urbanisation and technical an economical growth of society.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2007.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 70-71).<br>This thesis introduces SPONGE, a project developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology between October 2006 and May 2007. SPONGE is a workshop model based on immersion, absorption and making connections. The project is both an artistic practice and a method for teaching and learning. My intent in the writing that follows is to give the reader a complete sense of SPONGE. I will begin with a narrative description of the first SPONGE. Once the concept of SPONGE is clear, I will put the project in an art historical context by providing a synopsis of site-specific art and social practice. The current debate about the role of aesthetics in socially based artwork underlies my discussion of the role of the visual and the sensory in SPONGE. Talking about aesthetics also invites an exploration of the autonomy of artistic praxis. I will argue that by creating a distancing framework, SPONGE avoids the dissolution of art into life, even as it celebrates content that exists outside of a traditional art context. A space is thereby preserved for criticality. With criticality comes the politics of the SPONGE, which will be considered in terms of pedagogy. I will address the role of the participant and the way in which SPONGE encourages independent thought and the assembly of ideas.<br>(cont.) Once SPONGE has been evaluated through the lens of aesthetics, criticality, and pedagogy, I will put forth some thoughts on the future of SPONGE. I believe the workshop has the potential to be adapted for use in almost any context and I propose that any field of inquiry may find its place in SPONGE. I have included excerpts in this text from an earlier paper entitled "The Artist as Employee." It is from that paper, and my desire to find a formal structure for my artwork, that SPONGE emerged. I will conclude this thesis with what I feel is an appropriate endpoint for a project that will continue to evolve: a section on the origins of SPONGE.<br>by Hope Ginsburg.<br>S.M.

With respect to requested accuracy, quality and expected production run of 1 000 000 pcs per year, the Thesis includes the proposal of manufacture of the part by a method of accurate cutting with push-on edge. Is designed the cutting tool and selected the suitable machine type for this technology Feintool HFA 3200 Plus. The work contains necessary calculations, economical evaluation and design documentation of the processual tools for the components production. The last part contains the technical and economic evaluation, from which results that, technically and economically, the new production technology is preferable to the existing technology.

Recently, they have been focus of heightened attention due to the wide range of biologically active compounds with potential application, particularly, in chemical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. However, we still lack fundamental knowledge of their microbial ecology and biotechnological potential. The development of high-throughput sequencing technologies has given rise to a new range of tools that can help us explore the biotechnological potential of sponges with incredible detail. Metagenomics, in particular, has the power to revolutionize the production of bioactive compounds produced by unculturable microorganisms. It can offer the identification of biosynthetic genes or gene clusters that can be heterologously expressed on a cultivable and suitable host. This review focus on the exploration of the biotechnological potential of sponge-associated microorganisms, and integration of molecular approaches, whose increasing efficiency can play an essential role on achieving a sustainable source of natural products.<br>As esponjas marinhas abrigam comunidades microbianas de grande importância ecológica e biotecnológica. Recentemente, estas têm recebido maior atenção devido ao grande número de compostos com actividade biológica, com potencial aplicação, particularmente, nas indústrias química, cosmética e farmacêutica. O desenvolvimento de tecnologias de sequenciação de alta resolução deu origem a novo grupo de abordagens que nos podem ajudar a explorar o potencial biotecnológico das esponjas com um detalhe sem precedentes. As abordagens metagenómicas, em particular, tem poder para revolucionar a produção de compostos com actividade biológica produzidos por microrganismos não cultiváveis, ao permitir a identificação de genes ou clusters de genes biosintéticos com capacidade para serem expressos heterologamente num organismo hospedeiro adequado e cultivável. Esta revisão foca particularmente a exploração do potencial biotecnológico dos microrganismos associados a esponjas, e a integração de abordagens moleculares, cuja eficiência crescente pode desempenhar um papel essencial no desenvolvimento de uma fonte sustentável de produtos naturais.

Previous research suggests that spouse factors contribute to the course and outcomes of cardiac illness. The present study examined spouse confidence in patient efficacy, spouse psychological distress, and spouse involvement in the research project as predictors of patient participation in Phase-II cardiac rehabilitation (CR) and subsequent changes in patient health and weekly exercise in a sample of 128 cardiac patients. Spouse confidence in patient efficacy predicted the number of CR sessions attended by male patients, independent of patients' own self-efficacy ratings, and spouse psychological distress predicted CR program completion among female patients, independent of patients' own distress. Spouse confidence also independently predicted increases in male and female patients' weekly exercise at six-month follow-up. Patients whose spouses participated in the study attended more CR exercise sessions and were more likely to complete the CR program than patients whose spouses did not take part in the study. Spouse involvement in the study also predicted positive health change at six-month follow-up among female patients. Results provide preliminary evidence that spouse factors can have predictive utility in the context of Phase-II CR, and contribute to research on the behavioral pathways via which psychosocial factors are linked to cardiac health outcomes.

Every week there are over a billion new posts to Twitter services and many of those messages contain feedback to companies about their services. One company that recognizes this unused source of information is Netflix. That is why Netflix initiated the development of a system that lets them respond to the millions of Twitter and Netflix users that are acting as sensors and reporting all types of user visible outages. This system enhances the feedback loop between Netflix and its customers by increasing the amount of customer feedback that Netflix receives and reducing the time it takes for Netflix to receive the reports and respond to them.
The goal of the SPOONS (Swift Perceptions of Online Negative Situations) system is to use Twitter posts to determine when Netflix users are reporting a problem with any of the Netflix services. This work covers the architecture of the SPOONS system and framework as well as outage detection using tweet classification.

Ammonium nitrate (AN) is commonly used as an explosive and as a fertilizer. In both roles it is provided as prills or pellets, approximately spherical and a few millimetres in diameter. The microstructures of several commercially-available AN compositions were investigated usingenvironmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and X-ray microtomography. Those intended for explosive use were found to bemore porous than those intended for fertilizer use. The pores in explosiveprills were also found to form a connected network. The elemental composition of pellets of mixed AN and dolomite was investigated using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX); the dolomite additivewas found to take the form of grains roughly 50 μm in size. The compaction behaviour of confined cylindrical beds of these prillsand pellets was studied at strain rates between 4 x 10-4 s-1 and 200 s-1. Quasi-static experiments were performed using a screw-driven instrumented press, while higher-rate experiments used a drop weight,instrumented with a line laser and load cell. The resistance of a bed to compaction was found to depend on the microstructure of its prills in most cases. Denser prills offered greater resistance to compaction. The exception to this rule was a pellet, rather than prill, formulation. Beds were also found to offer more resistance to compaction at higher strain rates. The Kawakita compaction model was found to agree well with the experimental data. A commercial fertilizer, not containing any AN, was assessed for use as an inert mock for AN prills and pellets. Prills of a suitable size for this purpose were found using EDX to consist of P2O5, with a coatingof unknown composition. They were supplied mixed with smaller K2CO3 and urea prills. The mixture was found to have comparablecompaction behaviour to AN compositions, indicating that it was useful as a mock for those compositions. In a plate impact experiment on a single layer of P2O5 prills, very little light was observed. Thisindicated that these prills were sufficiently inert for these purposes. The light produced by shocked granular ammonium nitrate beds and single prill layers was investigated using high-speed framing photography, photodiodes and gated visible-light spectroscopy. Framing photography of prill layers suggested that reaction in prill beds was dominatedby effects internal to prills. This was further supported by the similarity between photodiode recordings of prill beds and beds of inert prills containing a single reactive prills. Framing photography of drop weight experiments searching for a mechanism for initiation of reaction by interaction between prills found nothing. Decay of the light output of the beds suggested that in both granularand prill beds this light output was due to small regions heated to thousands of kelvin, which then cooled. Spectroscopic study confirmed this. These regions were found to reach a peak temperature of 6660 ± 20 K, well in excess of the approximately 2000 K predicted by a simple chemical model. Investigation of spectral lines observedduring this study indicated that the exothermic reaction that led to heating of these emitting regions involved NO.

In today’s way of installing a sheet pile in a non-cohesive soil, there is no well-known way to determine whether a sheet pile will be difficult driven or easily driven, based from the ground assessment made for each project (MUR). TESPA has concluded that driving speed of a sheet pile lower than 8 mm/second or 230,4m installed sheet piles per day defines drivability as difficult. A ground assessment consists of numerous geotechnical survey methods that has been made and summarized in one document. The information in the document varies after which type of probing method that has been used for the mission. Usually recurrent probing methods are dynamic probing and CPT. The purpose of this study is to identify if the ground assessment is sufficient to determine if a project will be difficult driven in a non-cohesive soil. Since the hypothesis is based on two projects, and it does not take the placement of the probes in to account compare to the actually location of the sheet piles, a specific value from the ground assessment cannot be established for the drivability. Despite this, after comparing the two projects, a high value of the dynamic probing can indicate when a mission will be difficult driven.

The reason for this choice of the thesis was to understand the whole issue of plastic injection molding process. The specified component is used to atach the sail, which serves to protect workers in the welding sector. A specified number of the series is 350 000. The work includes a theoretical problem of injection molding process, selection of technology, material selection and design of mold. An integral part of every design mold is a simulation of injection, which is also included. In conclusion of thesis is the calculation of the various stages of production and operation of the injection mold.

This paper examines data for 12,868 individuals from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) from 1979 through 2010 to explore certain financial incentives of marriage. In particular, this paper focuses on identifying the combination of occupations that decreases idiosyncratic income volatility to the greatest extent. For the sake of this paper, marriage is defined as the combination of two separate assets into a single portfolio. With such, I derive the efficient frontier for each occupation and gender. In the process, reward-to-volatility and mean-variance utility maximization techniques are introduced. Ultimately, applying modern portfolio theory to the marriage market allows one to examine the economic incentives of marriage in a way that has not previously been done. On the whole, the analysis confirms previous literature on marriage dynamics, while offering a new framework for analysis.

The recent economic recession has led to a large number of dual-income families losing their second income or having a smaller overall household income as a result of hourly wage cuts. Previous research has examined how job satisfaction can spill over into home life satisfaction; however, literature on how life satisfaction can affect job satisfaction is scarce. Based on theories of job satisfaction, personality, conservation of resources, and affective spillover, this study examined whether job satisfaction of the working partner was affected when the other became unemployed. Measures of job satisfaction, life satisfaction, personality, spousal status, and some demographic data were collected from 99 participants, recruited via various social media sites, who were a dual earning couple and had a significant other who had lost their job in the prior six months. Analysis of covariance was used to compare job and life satisfaction of single- versus dual-earner families, with these covariates: age, education level, income, and the personality traits of neuroticism and conscientiousness. A multivariate analysis of covariance found that the covariates did not account for any significant variance in the analyses, and there were no significant differences between single- and dual-earner family status for either life or job satisfaction. While no empirical support was found for the hypotheses, supplemental analyses revealed that having a partner who worked part-time was preferable to having one who worked full-time, suggesting that part-time work allows for more family/spouse involvement. The social change implications for individuals and organizations include the exploration of how significant life events can impact job satisfaction. Continued research in this area could assist in increasing overall job satisfaction and performance.

This study applied molecular phylogenetic tools to examine the evolutionary history of barnacles symbiotic with sponges. The transition from free-living to sponge-symbiosis has evolved independently at least three times within this group. The evolution of sponge symbiosis resulted in significant adaptive radiation, and over 100 species were identified, including >50 new species, from Australian waters. Host use was typically restricted to a few species and phylogenetically conserved.

Thank you.<br>Protein hot spots provide a large portion of the binding free energy during interact ions, and detecting and characterizing these hot spot regions provides insight that can be used in the development of novel drugs for t he purpose of regulating pathological pathways. In t his dissertation, I first compare t he FTMap algorithm, which detects hot spots by identifying locations where different simulated solvent-sized molecules are consistently found to have favorable interactions, to experimental methods that detect hot spots by alternative means. Specifically, I show that FTMap detects the hot spots detected by alanine scanning, and I discover two roles for residues near hot spots in protein-protein interaction (PPI) complexes. Furthermore, additional insights into the binding energetics of PPis are uniquely provided by FTMap, and these insights are important for drug-design. FTMap is then shown to detect the hot spots identified by successful fragment-screening experiments, and the additional sites detected by FTMap are shown to provide insight into the optimal regions for ligand extension for the molecules identified by t he fragment-screening experiment. Since binding sites are composed of multiple hot spots, we have recently used FTMap for binding site detection. I examine the highly accurate binding site detection algorithm, show that the success of this algorithm is a consequence of only a portion of the scoring protocol, and develop a faster protocol for binding site detection based on this insight. I also quantitate the improvement in precision obtained by using multiple probes and argue t hat the principle biophysical considerations in hot spot detection are hydrophobicity and complexity. Finally, I develop a functional-group clustering algorithm, which is informative for evaluation of the binding locations of pre-determined chemical moieties. I then provide evidence that other approaches employing FTMap results may lead to insight into selectivity. I conclude with a discussion on the nature of hot spots, and I suggest that evolutionary studies of protein divergence should provide insight into the emergence of chemical-selectivity thus providing biophysical insight into the factors that drive selectivity within hot spots.<br>2031-01-01

Tissue microarrays (TMAs) are a high-throughput technique that facilitates the survey of very large numbers of tumours, important both in clinical and research applications. However, the assessment of stained TMA sections is laborious and still needs to be carried manually, constituting a bottleneck in the pathologist?s work-flow. This process is also prone to perceptual errors and observer variability.Thus, there is strong motivation for the development of automated quantitative analysis of TMA image data. The analysis of breast TMA sections subjected to nuclear immunostaining begins with the classification of each spot as to the maintype of tissue that it contains, namely tumour, normal, stroma, or fat. Tumour and normal spots are then assigned a so-called quickscore composed of a pair or integer values, the first reflecting the proportion of epithelial nuclei that are stained, and the second reflecting the strength of staining of those nuclei. In this work, an approach was developed to analyse breast TMA spots subjectedto progesterone receptor immunohistochemistry. Spots were classified into their four main types through a method that combined a bag of features approachand classifiers based on either multi-layer perceptrons or latent Dirichlet allocation models. A classification accuracy of 74.6 % was achieved. Tumour and normal spots were scored via an approach that involved the computation of global features formalising the quickscore values used by pathologists, and the use of Gaussian processes for ordinal regression to predict actual quickscores based on global features. Mean absolute errors of 0.888 and 0.779 were achieved in the prediction of the first and second quickscore values, respectively. By setting thresholds on prediction confidence, it was possible to classify and score fractions of spots with substantially higher accuracies and lower mean absolute errors. Amethod for the segmentation of TMA spots into regions of different types was also investigated, to explore the generative nature of latent Dirichlet allocation models.

This master thesis introduces the problematics of multilayer printed circuit boards. Theoretical part is focused on materials used for production of multilayer PCB and their parameters. At the same time, it focuses on the pressing process of multi-layered PCB, the types of presses used and their advantages and disadvantages. Practical part describes the methodology and testing of the PCB to identify the reliability of chosen electrical parameters. Testing is aimed to simulate thermal stress during machine soldering and during thermal stress in the target environment.

The dark matter (DM) blind spots in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) refer to the parameter regions where the couplings of the DM particles to the Z-boson or the Higgs boson are almost zero, leading to vanishingly small signals for the DM direct detections. In this paper, we carry out comprehensive analyses for the DM searches under the blind-spot scenarios in MSSM. Guided by the requirement of acceptable DM relic abundance, we explore the complementary coverage for the theory parameters at the LHC, the projection for the future underground DM direct searches, and the indirect searches from the relic DM annihilation into photons and neutrinos. We find that (i) the spin-independent (SI) blind spots may be rescued by the spin-dependent (SD) direct detection in the future underground experiments, and possibly by the indirect DM detections from IceCube and SuperK neutrino experiments; (H) the detection of gamma rays from Fermi-LAT may not reach the desirable sensitivity for searching for the DM blind spot regions; (Hi) the SUSY searches at the LHC will substantially extend the discovery region for the blind-spot parameters. The dark matter blind spots thus may be unblinded with the collective efforts in future DM searches.

A chemical study of the marine petrosid sponge Xestospongia vanilla has led to the isolation of nine new isoprene derived secondary metabolites. Their proposed structures were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic analysis and chemical degradation and interconversions.
Xestodiol (94), a C₁₈ apocarotenoid, appears to be a degradation product of the abundant marine carotenoid fucoxanthin (103). The xestovanins (98-102) are triterpene glycosides; their isolation represents the second reported occurrence of this type of compound from sponges. Their triterpene carbon skeletons are unique, and are either monocyclic (secoxestovanane skeleton) or bicyclic (xestovanane skeleton). All the xestovanins contain the same disaccharide fragment composed of L-rhamnose alpha linked to the 4 position of D-fucose. The fucose residue is beta linked to the same position on the aglycone in all isolated xestovanins. Xestovanin D (102) contains an extra L-rhamnose residue attached to a different position on the aglycone. Xestovanin A (98) was found to be an inhibitor of fungal growth, while xestovanin C (101) inhibited the growth of bacteria. A series of three smaller apparently related terpenes was also isolated. Xestenone (95) and secoxestenone (97) both contained new C₁₉ carbon skeletons. Secoxestenone (97), a monocyclic compound, could be converted into the bicyclic xestenone (95) by an intramolecular aldol condensation. The C₂₀ xestolide (96), with a similar structure to both xestenone and secoxestenone, had an unique carbon skeleton that could not be derived readily from an unrearranged diterpene skeleton. It is suggested that these three smaller terpenes (95-97) are degraded triterpenes, derived from a secoxestovanane carbon skeleton. The secondary metabolite chemistry of the petrosid sponges is reviewed, and an overview of triterpenes of marine origin is presented.<br>Science, Faculty of<br>Chemistry, Department of<br>Graduate

[Truncated abstract] Sponges have an invaluable ecological importance through the provision of shelter and habitat, consolidation of reefs, bio-erosion, and in benthic-pelagic coupling processes. In addition, sponges are known to be an incredible source of compounds with bio-medicinal and commercial applications. Despite their ecological and economic importance, our understanding of the processes which maintain and structure sponge populations is severely lacking compared to other sessile invertebrates (e.g. Cnidarians). This study examines the processes which help maintain and the factors which structure the populations of two sympatric Haliclona species (Demospongiae; Haplosclerida; Chalinidae) at Hamelin Bay on the south west coast of Australia. In addition, the importance of both species to the broader marine community is examined. The reproductive biology of both species was determined from histological sections taken from each species over two years at Hamelin Bay. No evidence of asexual reproduction was observed in either species. Sexual reproduction occurred from November to April in Haliclona sp. 1 (hereafter green Haliclona) and November to May in Haliclona sp. 2 (hereafter brown Haliclona). The green Haliclona is viviparous with both gonochoric and hermaphroditic individuals observed in the population. The brown Haliclona is also viviparous with separate sexes. The onset and progression of reproduction in both species corresponded to increases in water temperature and photoperiod, but only decreasing wave height showed a significant correlation to gametogenesis. ... A significant (P < 0.05) difference in concentration between seasons was also observed, suggesting environmental and physiological factors affect the production of salicylihalamide A in the green Haliclona. The importance of each species to the marine environment was assessed by investigating the endofauna inhabiting each species across their known range ( [approx. ]1000 km's). A total of 948 and 287 endofaunal individuals were found associated with the green and brown Haliclona, respectively. Twenty four endofaunal taxa were found (from mysid shrimps to teleost fish), and the endofaunal assemblages of each species were significantly different. However, only the endofaunal assemblage associated with the green Haliclona varied among locations. Overall, this study demonstrates that the populations of both species are maintained by limited sexual reproductive output and larval dispersal. Abiotic factors (e.g. water temperature, wave exposure) influence the growth and physiology of both species, which is intimately connected to their abilities to reproduce. This has important consequences for the species populations with regard to their resilience to environmental change, and potential for harvesting of biomass for supply of bioactive compounds. Additionally, both species provide important habitats for many other organisms. The findings highlight the need for a detailed understanding of the ecology of potentially exploitable sponge species, to ensure their conservation and limit the impact on the organisms which rely on the sponges.
