Résumé :
The applications of floating vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) in deep water have been proposed and studied by several researchers recently. However, the feasibility of deploying a floating VAWT at a moderate water depth has not yet been studied. In this paper, this feasibility is thoroughly addressed by comparing the dynamic responses of spar-type VAWTs in deep water and moderate water depth. A short spar VAWT supporting a 5 MW Darrieus rotor at moderate water depth is proposed by following the deep spar concept in deep water. A fully coupled simulation tool, SIMO-RIFLEX-DMS code, is utilized to carry out time domain simulations under turbulent wind and irregular waves. Dynamic responses of the short spar and deep spar VAWTs are analyzed and compared, including the natural periods, wind turbine performance, platform motions, tower base bending moments, and tension of mooring lines. The statistical characteristics of the thrust and power production for both spars are similar. The comparison of platform motions and tower base bending moments demonstrate a good agreement for both spars, but the short spar has better performance in surge/sway motions and side–side bending moments. The 2P response dominates the bending moment spectra for both spars. A significant variation in tension of Mooring Line 1 and a larger corresponding spectrum value are found in the short spar concept. The results indicate that the application of short spar VAWTs is feasible and could become an alternative concept at moderate water depth.

Résumé :
Each evolutionary-independent province has its own mainland species area relationship (SPAR). When using the power law SPAR (S = cAz), separate mainland SPARs are parallel in a log-log space (similar z value), yet they differ in species density per unit area (c value). This implies that there are two main SPAR-based strategies to identify biodiversity hotspots. The first treats all mainland SPARs of all provinces as if they form one global SPAR. This is the strategy employed by Roll et al. (2009) when questioning Israel's high biodiversity. They concluded that Israel is not a global biodiversity hotspot. Their results may arise from the fact that Israel's province, the Palaearctic, is relatively poor. Therefore, countries from richer provinces, whose mainland SPAR lies above the Palaearctic SPAR, are identified as global hotspots. The second strategy is to construct different mainland SPARs for each province and identify the provincial hotspots. In this manuscript I ask whether Israel's biodiversity is high relative to other countries within its province. For six different taxa, I analyzed data for Palaearctic countries. For each taxon, I conducted a linear regression of species richness against the country's area, both log transformed. The studentized residuals were used to explore Israel's rank relative to all other Palaearctic countries. I found that Israel lies above the 95th percentile for reptiles and mammals and above the 90th percentile for birds. Therefore, within the Palaearctic province, Israel is indeed a biodiversity hotspot.

Résumé :
The spar platform is receiving considerable attention from the offshore petroleum industry, especially following the successful introduction of the first production spar in the Gulf of Mexico by Oryx and CNG in 1996. This paper presents a collection of observations regarding important heave characteristics of spar platforms that have been gleaned from wave-basin model tests, numerical simulations, and comparisons of the two. These observations are pertinent to the heave performance of “classic” (uniform-cylinder) spars. Excessive spar heave could be problematic for production and export risers. Spar-system characteristics affecting heave include draft, heave natural period, heave-damping augmentation, and presence/absence of a vertical tether/tendon. Tether requirements for shallow-draft spars have been found to be much less onerous than once thought; steel tethers yielding a heave natural period of 12 s have been found to be satisfactory. Heave-damping augmentation using multiple “plates” or “disks,” following the work of Troesch at the University of Michigan, has also been found to be quite attractive.

Spars have become an “industry solution” for deepwater developments. Vortex-induced motion (VIM) of spar platforms in currents remains an important design concern. Although strakes are effective at suppressing riser VIM, all three straked classical spars in the Gulf of Mexico have experienced significant VIM events. These are not examples of poor design but indicate a lack of adequate tools for predicting spar VIM. This paper presents the development and validation of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) methods to predict real-world spar VIM behavior. It includes the ability to address rough surfaces and high supercritical Reynolds numbers. The resulting algorithms are used to assess the effectiveness of active and passive control strategies for suppressing spar VIM. Active control consists of injecting high-pressure water tangentially into the boundary layer and is shown to be extremely effective at reducing drag and VIM amplitudes. Passive control utilizes a sleeve to channel high-pressure stagnation flow into the boundary layer and is found less effective.

Résumé :
A model insect wing is described in which spars of corrugated membrane which incorporate stiffening veins branch serially from a V-section leading edge spar. The mechanical behaviour of this model is analysed. The open, corrugated spars possess great resistance to bending, but are compliant in torsion. Torsion of the leading edge spar will result in torsion and relative movement of the rear spars. As a result camber will automatically be set up in the wing as it twists. Aerodynamic forces produced during the wing strokes will result in torsion and camber of the wing which should improve its aerodynamic efficiency. The effects of varying parameters of the wing model are examined. For given wing torsion, higher camber is given by spars branching from the leading edge at a lower angle, by spars which curve posteriorly, and by spars which diverge from each other. Wings of three species of flies were each subjected to two series of mechanical tests. Application of a force behind the torsional axis caused the wings to twist and to develop camber. Immobilizing basal regions of the leading edge greatly reduced compliance to torsion and camber, as predicted by the theoretical model. Aerodynamic forces produced during a half-stroke are sufficient to produce observed values of torsion and camber, and to maintain changes in pitch caused by inertial effects at stroke reversal.

Résumé :
Mass and cost tradeoffs by deploying three optimized spars, made of all-glass, hybrid and all-carbon composites, applied to a publicly available large-scale composite blade of 100 m in length for a 13.2 MW wind turbine, are explored. The blade mass and cost minimizations are calculated for two design load cases, generating the worst aerodynamic loads for parked and rotating rotor blades, while meeting the stiffness, strength, stability and resonance design requirements, as recommended by the wind turbine standards. The optimization cases are formulated as a single-objective, multi-constraint optimization problem, while taking into account the manufacturability of hybrid spars in particular, and it is solved using a genetic algorithm method. The blade mass lowers in the range of 8.1–13.3%, 18.5–20.7% and 25.7–26.4% for the optimized all-glass, hybrid and all-carbon spars, respectively, while the cost decreases for the optimized all-glass spars only. The cost increases in a range of 1.2–13.6% and 24.5–31.5% when the optimized hybrid and all-carbon spars are used. Further, the hybrid spar optimization using the blade mass and cost objective functions, as well as the effects of spar optimization on the blade’s structural performance in terms of tip deflection, strength, buckling resistance and first natural frequency, are discussed.

Résumé :
This paper describes a method for optimizing the design of a spar-type composite aircraft wing structure based on multi-criterion approach. Two types of composite wing structures such as two-spar and three-spar ones were considered. The optimal design of a wing frame was determined by the Pareto method basing on three criteria: minimal weight, minimal wing deflection, maximal safety factor and minimal weight. Positions of wing frame parts, i.e. spars and ribs, were considered as optimization parameters. As a result, an optimal design of a composite spar-type wing was proposed. All the calculations necessary to select the optimal structural and design of the spar composite wing were performed using nonlinear static finite element analysis in the FEMAP with NX Nastran software package.

Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is one of the most cultured species in marine cages in the Mediterranean Sea. In sea cages, farming fish are exposed to seasonal variations of water temperature and these variations can differ from one location to another. Managing the growing system requires a good knowledge of factors affecting the growth of fish, as fish status, feed availability and fish handling from the stocking time to the harvesting time. This study is an attempt to assess these factors at a marine fish farm of Gilthead sea bream, located at the south part of the Mediterranean Sea, in Tunisia. The study aims to demonstrate the interaction between performance rates, as feed conversion rate, specific growth rate and specific feeding rate and demonstrating their dependency on water temperature fluctuations. Water temperature variations are measured daily, and the monitoring of growth parameters was applied for 21 marine cages of sea bream reared for six consecutive years, in order to compare results with and without a trend in the time series. We assume that fish growth is influenced by three fundamental factors: fish weight, water temperature and specific feeding rate. These factors control the specific growth rate and consequently the feed conversion rate. Model predicting the growth, based on temperature and time, is used to evaluate the effect of feeding rate on fish performance and to demonstrate that feeding rate could be a constraint for growth models efficiency, combining several factors.

Résumé :
"Spark Gap" is an invisible electrical force made visible in spaces between things. This usually describes the space of air between two conductors; a non-conductive gap in an otherwise complete electric circuit, across which a quick luminous disruptive electrical discharge occurs. This interstitial space is the distance between two ideas, arced with a running leap. The arc can also be the difference between two things, a gap that becomes apparent only when the two are held in close proximity. In my thesis exhibition, "Spark Gap," a sea urchin shaped orb sits atop a tower of ladders. The orb is broken into five sections and reassembled, each fault line occurring along the perfect zigzag line of its cellular structure. On the floor, there is a linen shag rug, marked as if struck by lightning. This exhibition is named for an interstitial charge, arcing across distance or difference. But this charge is also found in intersections and similarities. Imagine the friction created by rubbing together the circles of a Venn diagram: the overlapping section would begin to spark. It is in these gaps and overlaps that I find the impetus for my work.

Résumé :
Various shape memory alloys (Ti-Ni-Hf, Ni-Al and Cu-Al-Ni) were elaborated by spark plasma sintering method from the micron, submicron and nano- sized particles prepared by spark-erosion method in cryogenic liquid from preliminary melted master alloys. These alloys are being developed as one of the alternatives for the intermediate temperature applications (100-900oC). Spark plasma sintering method is express method, which provides lower temperature and shorter holding time of sintering. It makes possible to sinter materials from the pre-alloyed powders and eliminate the intensive grains growth and precipitating processes influencing the mechanical and functional properties of functional materials. The effects of processing parameters on the martensitic transformation and microstructure of the sintered compacts were investigated using XRD and SEM study. Temperatures of sintering were chosen according to the assessed data of the decomposition, oxidation and others processes carrying out in material. Although the precipitating processes were usually not completely depressed, the intensive grain growth was also not found in most cases. Most of the microstructure peculiarities of as processed powder were inherited by the sintered material. Résumé :
My PhD thesis analyses Catholic themes in the novel,s of Scottish born writer Muriel Spark. Spark's career spanned five decades, and much of her work was influenced by her conversion to Catholicism. She is a sophisticated and enigmatic writer whose work defies categorisation. Part of this difficulty stems from her position as "other" within Catholicism· -a result of her conversion and her refusal to adhere to traditional Catholic gender roles. What does become clear upon examining Spark's fiction is that she uses subversive and paradoxical rhetoric to highlight the problems inherent in being unable to fully comprehend God's mystery. Spark appears to be obsessed with several religious concepts that appear constantly in her fiction. In the case of the Catholic convert and the Book of Job, these threads appear repeatedly and build to a climax-once Spark comprehensively addresses them in her fiction, the threads disappears from her work entirely. In exploring these Catholic themes, it becomes clear that, despite Spark's work being abundant with references to religion, there is very little narrative space devoted to the character's internal thoughts regarding God and religious thought. I argue that in Spark's fiction, creativity is a proxy for religious faith. Spark draws parallels to the personal and individual nature of both, but devotes more narrative space to explaining a sense of faith in the creative process. She also appears to grant narrative endorsement to characters who believe in and ate guided by their creativity, even when they clearly traverse the boundaries of acceptable "moral" behaviour.

Because most data processing systems are distributed in nature, data must be transferred between machines. Currently, Spark, a prominent such system, predetermines the strategies for shuffling this data, but in certain situations, different shuffle strategies would improve performance. We add functionality to track metrics about the data during the job and appropriately adapt the shuffle strategy. We show improvements in ShuffledRDD performance, joins using Spark's RDD interface, and joins in Spark SQL.

Résumé :
Abstract Purpose: The purpose of the study is to develop a model that will facilitate the choice of maintenance strategy within the Swedish pulp and paper industry. Without compromising system availability, the model aims to reduce inventory holding costs. Methodology: At first, a literary research was conducted to create a holistic view over the chosen topic, in time it developed into a literature framework. Secondly, a case study was conducted in order to obtain empirical data. The data were obtained through interviews and archival records. The literature framework and the empirical data were then cross-analyzed with each other. Findings: In this thesis, a model has been developed based on previously applied and accepted methods. The methods have been identified and described in order to provide a strategy in which the inventory levels- and value could be lowered. The findings indicate that the organization must seek to assign ABC-classified and VED-analyzed components different maintenance actions in order to reduce the total cost. Theoretical contribution: This thesis contributes to a methodology development regarding spare parts management. It aims to add knowledge to the existing gap regarding spare parts order point and batch size. The thesis provides a procedure in which systems including critical and expensive components are evaluated in order to assign them the appropriate maintenance. Practical relevance: The model has only been exemplified by using a system position from Stora Enso Skutskär, the numerical values are examples. The model must be tested with real values and the risk analysis must be carried out with a group of employees with great insight regarding the selected component and system position. Limitations: This thesis is delimited to spare parts management and inventory management. The study only involves one Swedish organization, whereas the organization and its spare parts management illustrates the complexity concerning spares. The model will not be verified as the focus is to highlight the research gap and to develop the model.

Résumé :
Abstract Purpose This thesis aims to focus on how master students administer scholarly articles after they have found them. The purpose of the study is to detect how and to what extent people administer their articles from a personal information management-perspective (PIM). Method To answer the research questions, a web-based questionnaire survey was distributed which was announced to around 2,000 master students from different universities in Sweden. Most of the items in the survey focused on individual storage methods. The respondents were asked to rate the frequency of their different information administration behaviors on a seven level Likert-type-scale. Subsequently, items concerning specific information administration behaviors were posed, followed by questions on the respondent's sociodemographic status. The results were based on overall 316 answers. Analysis The quantitative data was analyzed using non-parametric tests such as Friedmans-test, Kruskal-Wallis-analysis, Wilcoxon-Signed Rank-test, Mann-Whitney-U-test and Chi-square-test with the statistical computer program SPSS. Findings The findings generally confirm that the majority of the surveyed graduate students are using scholarly articles. Regarding their information management, it is as usual to store the whole article as it is to store the reference. Further it is more common to choose electronic storage methods for articles and references than to use physical methods. The results highlight that most of the students use several method types and use them to varying extent. Neither age, computer skills, duration of study or satisfaction with their way of information storage influenced the quantity of used methods. Regarding specific handling, the storing of article copies on the computer’s hard drive were most frequently used. The respondents preferred furthermore to read the articles on a screen rather than printed paper versions. The influencing factors of gender, age, computer skills, subject discipline were affecting the choice of methods. General conclusions about these influencing factors are, however, complicated by possible occurring confounders. Moreover, the method types were used to different extents depending of subject discipline. Originality/value Most previous PIM research is concentrating on how people store information in general. The dealing and administrating with specific types of information are, however, rarely discussed. In the context of scholarly articles did research predominantly focus on seeking structures and reading patterns. The step between finding and reading an article has so far not directly been addressed in academic research. The study therefore is unique in addressing information storage systems of scholarly articles on such a large scale. Knowledge about storage patterns will help journal publishers and librarians to design more targeted solutions for journal systems and improve services like courses in information seeking. Résumé :
Despite designer’s best efforts, Vortex-Induced Motion (VIM) of spars remains a significant problem. While strakes have proven highly effective at suppressing riser VIM, all three straked classical spars in the Gulf of Mexico continue to experience occasional VIM events. Since VIM can cause riser damage, mooring line fatigue, and even work stoppage, its suppression is a major priority. But designers will only successfully eliminate VIM once reliable predictions tools become available. VIM is both roughness and Reynolds number dependent, and spars lie outside the validated range of current computational tools in both these areas. This paper presents the development of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods to predict real-world spar VIM behavior. It includes the ability to address rough surfaces and high super-critical Reynolds numbers. Validation is provided against existing experimental data where available. The resulting algorithms were used to assess effectiveness of two alternative control strategies for suppressing spar VIM. The first strategy consists of actively injecting fluid in a direction tangential to the spar. The second strategy is passive, and relies on adding an external sleeve to the spar. Active injection was found highly effective, and even capable of totally eliminating VIM. The passive alternative was also found to reduce VIM, but is not as effective as active injection.

Résumé :
A Spar is a deep draft platform for oil and gas production and drilling operations. One of the features of the Spar platform is the presence of a moonpool (or centerwell) inside the cylindrical hull structure. A unique aspect of the moonpool in Spars is the presence of partial closure plates at the bottom. The seawater goes in and out of the moonpool though these bottom closure (or guide) plates. Depending on the design of a Spar (e.g., the number of risers), typical period of moonpool vertical oscillation can be close to the peak of extreme seastate spectra. The Spar heave motion is thus coupled with the moonpool water oscillation and presents itself as a two oscillator problem. The complex behavior of moonpool and Spar heave interaction is largely ignored in current practice, via conservative assumptions (this is also due to lack of a mathematical model). A new model describing this interaction between moonpool water oscillation and the Spar heave has been developed in this paper. The results of the new model highlight the importance of the moonpool hydrodynamics in predicting the heave motions of Spars.

Résumé :
Spars are widely recognized as an excellent choice for deep water applications due to their hydrodynamic characteristics. However, some relatively recent works report the occurrence of large motions in the plane perpendicular to wave incidence direction, i.e., not directly excited by waves. These unstable motions have been attributed to Mathieu instabilities, caused by pure hydrostatic variations of the underwater hull geometry. Based on a new approach developed by the Authors for predicting parametric rolling in ships, this nonlinear phenomenon has been investigated for spar platforms. The proposed approach demonstrates analytical and numerically that unstable motions, in fact, may appear, but the mechanism that triggers parametric rolling is not related to variations in the hull hydrostatic characteristics. Nonlinear pressure variations induced by waves passing along the spar introduce parametric excitation. Different from typical ship forms, where this effect is negligible even in very long waves due to shorter draughts, in spars, this excitation can be significant, especially for very long waves. The present paper presents the analytical expressions for roll parametric excitation in spars and numerically explores the proposed approach applied to a typical spar under a wide range of wave heights and periods. Parametric Amplification Domains (PADs) were numerically computed, showing not only the boundaries of the instability regions but also the maximum roll amplitudes.

Résumé :
Porches or pull tubes are typically used as conventional hang-off systems for catenary risers suspended from spars. The Hybrid Catenary Riser (HCR) is a novel hang-off alternative to suspend risers from spars where conventional hang-off systems are not available. The HCR consists of a section of flexible pipe suspended from the spar deck and running down to a location about 120 ft below the keel, where it is connected to regular Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) pipe. The flexible pipe passes through intermediate guides in the spar structure, a receptacle protruding from the spar keel, a curved guide pipe attached to the receptacle, and exits a bend stiffener attached to the curved pipe. The curved guide pipe controls the riser departure angle. During pull-in, a bend stiffener connector (BSC) will lock the bend stiffener to the curved pipe while the flexible pipe slides freely through the bend stiffener allowing the pipe to be pulled up to the spar deck. Feasibility of the HCR configuration is verified through state-of-the-art computer modeling. Installation procedures are developed to demonstrate installability. This paper presents the concept in detail and identifies its technical and economic advantages.

Résumé :
Spar platforms have been used for oil and gas exploration in deep water for the past two decades. Spar experience low heave and pitch motions in operating conditions with its deep draft and large inertia. The heave motions can be large when encountered by long period swells. These resonant response leads to unstable motions due to heave-pitch coupling in spar platforms when the heave/pitch natural period ratio is 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0, referred to as Mathieu-type instability. This instability can be avoided by changing heave or pitch natural periods, so that the heave-pitch coupling can be avoided. The buoy form Spar proposed in this study is a cylindrical hull with curved surface near the water plane. A classic Spar of 31 m diameter and deep draft buoy form Spars with 25 m and 20 m diameter at the water plane area have been considered. The moon pool diameter of 12.5 m and the displacement of 63000 tonnes are maintained for all Spars. The experimental investigations are conducted using 1:100 scale models in the wave flume. Numerical simulations have been carried out using panel method. The classic Spar experiences Mathieu-type instability, since the heave/pitch natural period ratio is 0.5. The heave natural period of the buoy form Spar is higher than the classic Spar by 24% and 72%. The heave/pitch natural period ratio of the first buoy form Spar with 25 m diameter at the water plane area is 0.667; hence the heave-pitch coupling is avoided. The second buoy form Spar with 20 m diameter at the water plane area does not experience Mathieu-type instability, even though the heave/pitch natural period ratio is 1.0. Also the heave natural period of the second buoy form Spar is 36s (3.6 s in scale model) which is much above the design wave period. The possibility of Mathieu-type instability is avoided in the Spar by varying the hull shape near the water plane.

Résumé :
A dynamic spar numerical model for passive shape change is validated for a single degree of freedom contact-aided compliant mechanism (CCM) in a flapping spar. CCMs are modeled as compliant joints: spherical joints with distributed mass and three axis nonlinear torsional spring-dampers. Several assumptions were made in the original formulation of the model, such as assuming the spars were rigid and a simple damping model for the compliant joints. An experiment was performed to validate the assumptions and tune the model. Four configurations of the leading edge spar were tested: a solid spar, a previously designed CCM at two spatial locations, and a modified version of the CCM. Reflective markers were placed on each configuration, then the spars were inserted into the wing roots of a clamped ornithopter. An array of computer vision cameras was used to track the spar and CCM kinematics as they were flapped. First, a flapping angle function was extracted using a moving average of the flapping cycles. Then, a genetic algorithm was implemented to tune the stiffness and damping parameters for each of the configuration, minimizing the root mean square error between the model and experimental marker kinematics. The model was able to capture the deflection amplitude and harmonics of the CCMs with very good agreement and minimal to no phase shift.

Résumé :
The Spar continues to be a popular drilling and production platform design for ultra-deep water. In recent years, developers have introduced a number of design variations such as the Arctic Spar, closed centerwell Spar, and long Spar. As the industry moves production into ultra-deep water, the escalation in drilling costs, particularly for deeper more complicated wells, prompts the need to look for new deepwater floater designs, including Spars. This paper introduces some new features to the Truss Spar, including a radial wellbay layout and an adjustable buoyancy centerwell device. This new Radial Wellbay Spar design is investigated and compared to the traditional Truss Spar for the same topside and riser weights and subjected to the same environments. The base case assumes a drilling and production platform with the performance comparison made in terms of hull weights and dimensions and hull motions for post-Katrina Gulf of Mexico conditions. In general, the Radial Wellbay Spar offers a smaller hull with fewer mooring lines for the same payload while maintaining the Spar’s low motion performance.

Résumé :
Floating spar platforms are widely used in the Gulf of Mexico for oil production. The spar is a bluff, vertical cylinder which is subject to Vortex Induced Motions (VIM) when current velocities exceed a few knots. All spars to date have been constructed with helical strakes to mitigate VIM in order to reduce the loads on the risers and moorings. Model tests have indicated that the effectiveness of these strakes is influenced greatly by details of their design, by appurtenances placed on the outside of the hull and by current direction. At this time there is limited full scale data to validate the model test results and little understanding of the mechanisms at work in strake performance. The authors have been investigating the use of CFD as a means for predicting full scale VIM performance and for facilitating the design of spars for reduced VIM. This paper reports on the results of a study to benchmark the CFD results for a truss spar with a set of model experiments carried out in a towing tank. The focus is on the effect of current direction, reduced velocity and strake pitch on the VIM response. The tests were carried out on a 1:40 scale model of an actual truss spar design, and all computations were carried out at model scale. Future study will consider the effect of external appurtenances on the hull and scale-up to full scale Reynolds’ numbers on the results.

Résumé :
A new configuration of Spar platform called the Cell-Truss Spar has recently been put forward by State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering (SKLOE) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since the Cell-Truss Spar is a new design concept that has several physical characteristics which are different from those of the present Classic, Truss and Cell Spars, many aspects of its performances in various sea conditions should be carefully studied. For any type of Spars, Vortex-Induced Motions (VIM) under current flow is an important consideration since it not only affects the motion performance of the Spar, but also reacts on the fatigue analysis and Spar mooring design. This paper mainly discusses the unsteady flows around the new Cell-Truss Spar and the corresponding vortex-induced motion performances of the Spar in uniform currents. A CFD model of the Cell-Truss Spar upper hull (without strake designs for VIM mitigation since it’s still at the concept design stage at the present time) with a scale ratio of 1:100 is created and numerical simulations at different current conditions are performed. The software FLUENT is chosen as the computational fluid dynamic tool to simulate the flow fields around the Cell-Truss Spar and the resulting vortex-induced motions. Both 2D and 3D simulations are carried out. Dynamic meshes and user defined functions are used in the fluid-structure interaction for solving the equations of motion. The SST k-ω method is used as the turbulence model in the 2D simulation and the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) is used in the 3D simulation. In the 2D simulation, the unsteady flows around the Cell-Truss Spar hard tank at different Reynolds numbers are calculated and the corresponding vortex shedding features and other fluid parameters are obtained and analyzed. Moreover, in order to set up a baseline for the comparison and analysis of the Cell-Truss Spar, a typical Truss Spar hard tank with the same diameter and draft is also modeled and calculated. Comparisons with several classical experimental and numerical results are conducted to validate the numerical method. The Cell-Truss Spar hull VIM responses are then simulated. For the 3D simulation, the fluid domain is made of a hybrid mesh comprising of millions of wedgy and hexahedral elements. Since 3D simulation is very time-consuming, only the results of the nonlinear flow field features for the currents passing the stationary Spar are presented in this paper, and more advanced studies related to this subject including both numerical and experimental investigations would be carried out successively.
