Résumé :
The objective of this thesis is to examine the meaning of the language used in an Entertainment-Education (E-E) radio serial drama RockPoint 256 (RP256) and its representation of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) and HIV/AIDS. The theoretical framework that is used to guide this study is the Cultural Studies perspective. Using Cultural Studies is instrumental to a study such as this that looks to find the source of meaning in RP256’s discourse (Hall, 1993, 105). The methodological research design used is discourse analysis that examines the oral and written data of RP256. Discourse analysis “focuses on the way language is used, what it is used for, and the social context in which it is used” (Punch, 1998, 226). There were two types of discourse analyses used. Gee’s (1999) discourse analysis is used to analyse the linguistic nature of the texts at a micro level while, Fairclough’s (1989) discourse analysis is used to observe the overarching meaning of the discourse found in RP256 at the macro level. The analysis of the data indicates that the representation of PLHA is a product of the societal and cultural markers that are a result of ideological labels given to HIV/AIDS and PLHA. The study concludes that PLHA are ostracised, stigmatized, live in poverty and are mostly women. The societal and cultural markers indicate that HIV/AIDS is still viewed as a plague and as a result PLHA are often silenced, marginalized, and discriminated against in Uganda.

Résumé :
In this Bachelor thesis I explore sound and room as elements in design of user interfaces, both theoretical and practical in a specific application domain, to identify some of the advantages and disadvantage associated with these elements. As application domain I studied email clients and their usage at home amongst students at Blekinge Institute of Technology. In the study I found an activity, which seems to be highly distributed in the physical room where the user is located. The activity was notification of email and could take place in an arbitrary location of the home. I then augmented this activity with ideas from my theoretical assumption about room and sound. The result was a rule-based agent for notification of email, which primarily uses sound as interaction style.
I fokus för mitt arbete står två begrepp, ljud och rummet samt att skapa en fusion mellan dem i ett gränssnitt. Båda är områden som med tiden har fått ökad betydelse för IT design.

Résumé :
Operators of longwall mining systems experience sound levels of 93–105 dB(A) and receive noise exposures that place them at risk of noise-induced hearing loss. To address the problem, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH*) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has conducted research to develop engineering noise controls for longwall systems. In previous field surveys, the sound radiated by the cutting drums was identified as a major hazard, especially considering their close proximity to the operators. Cutting drums are complex structures consisting of curved metal pieces welded together, and NIOSH has used modeling and simulation to characterize the acoustic properties of this structure. Based on a finite element (FE) model of the drum, the boundary element method (BEM) was used to predict the sound radiated from the vibrating drum due to an excitation force applied to one of the cutting bits. Simulations were used to examine the following with respect to the radiated sound power: (1) the ramifications of adding the welds to the model rather than assuming direct attachment between the metal components; (2) the effect of weld stiffness; (3) the relative contributions of the vanes and the cylindrical part of the drum; and (4) the sensitivity to the direction of the applied force. Parametric studies have shown that including the weld in the finite element model has a significant effect on the predicted sound power level, while varying the weld Young’s modulus by 20% does not radically change the sound radiation. Panel contribution analysis indicates that the vanes contribute much more to the total sound power level, as compared to the cylindrical part of the drum. Consequently, it is expected that damping treatments would be most effective at controlling noise radiation if applied to the vanes rather than to the cylindrical portion. Finally, case study results show that the sound power levels are most sensitive to the tangential and bending forces above 500 Hz. For frequencies below 500 Hz, the sound power level is most sensitive to axial and bending forces.

Résumé :
Abstract The oil industry, in its constant strive to maximize gains out of operational data is constantly exploring new horizons where to combine the latest advances in data science and digitalization, into the areas where key decisions to drive economical and operational decisions reside with an aim at optimizing the capital expenditure through sound decision making. High volume operational data has been recognized as hiding many opportunities where the captured details these repositories that include real time logs and bit run summaries, provide a clear opportunity where to extract insights to support optimized decisions in terms of equipment selection to achieve the desired operational objectives. Current possibilities within data science have opened the possibilities through viable solutions, which in this case, aims at providing advise on which equipment in terms of BHA and Bits to select, that would yield the desired outcome for a drilling run. The whole exercise being based on evidence gathered from previous runs where the details for the equipment, the relevant well characteristics, and the observed rates of penetration and the used parameters, are taken into consideration to provide the optimum combination to be implemented in new runs. The present study describes the methodology in terms of data utilization, data science method development and solution deployment, with the associated issues that had to be addressed in order to provide a viable solution in terms of data utilization, technical validity and final user utilization, as well as a series of recommendations to be addressed within any such endeavors to assure the value addition.

Résumé :
Despite an initial reversal of capital inflows, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in relatively mild impacts on net capital flows to Emerging and Developing Economies. In contrast to previous crises, gross capital inflows offset residents' outflows, resulting in relatively stable net capital flows and modest current account adjustments. Liquid international markets, access to official resources, and sound fundamentals allowed for capital inflows, thus preventing the additional costs of widespread Sudden Stops during the pandemic. Still, we show a relatively simple model predicted Sudden Stops in net flows reasonably well in countries with weaker fundamentals.
