Résumé :
Many applicants for academic degrees are sure that their main task is to write a good dissertation. In fact, it is necessary to solve not one, but at least two tasks: first, of course, to prepare the work, and secondly, to successfully protect it. But this is not so much a scientific as a managerial problem that requires its own ways and methods of solution. The methods of its solution are discussed in the proposed work. The book is aimed primarily at applicants defending PhD theses, but it may also be of interest to those who are preparing for the defense of doctoral theses or are interested in the organization of scientific activities.

Résumé :
Many reactions in solution involve acids and bases, and so this chapter examines these important reactions in detail. Topics covered include the ionisation of water, pH, pOH, acids and bases, conjugate acids and conjugate bases, acid and base dissociation constants, the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, the Henderson-Hasselbalch approximation, buffer solutions and buffer capacity. A unique feature of this chapter is a ‘first principles’ analysis of how a reaction buffered at a particular pH achieves an equilibrium composition different from that of the same reaction taking place in an unbuffered solution. This introduces some concepts which are important in understanding the biochemical standard state, as required for Chapter 23.

Résumé :
This chapter provides an ethnography of a complex scenario involving the construction of a power plant and, in so doing, tries to show the importance of a practice-based approach to the problem of technical and organizational change. The chapter reports on fieldwork conducted in a highly complex and tightly coupled environment: power plant construction. The ethnography describes work practices on three different sites and describes and analyses their interlocking dependencies, showing the difficulties encountered at each location and the way in which the delays that result cascade through the different sites. It goes on to describe some technological solutions that are associated with augmented reality and that are being designed in response to the insights gained from the fieldwork. The chapter also reflects more generally on the relationship between fieldwork and design in real-world contexts.

Résumé :
Another key chapter, examining reactions in solution. Starting with the definition of an ideal solution, and then introducing Raoult’s law and Henry’s law, this chapter then draws on the results of Chapter 14 (gas phase equilibria) to derive the corresponding results for equilibria in an ideal solution. A unique feature of this chapter is the analysis of coupled reactions, once again using first principles to show how the coupling of an endergonic reaction to a suitable exergonic reaction results in an equilibrium mixture in which the products of the endergonic reaction are present in much higher quantity. This demonstrates how coupled reactions can cause entropy-reducing events to take place without breaking the Second Law, so setting the scene for the future chapters on applications of thermodynamics to the life sciences, especially chapter 24 on bioenergetics.

Résumé :
From an organization design perspective, authority has three very specific roles. First, authority can be the basis on which solutions to any of the universal problems of organizing (task division, task allocation, information and motivation) are selected and enforced. This is the authority to design. Second, authority can itself be a solution to problems of motivation and coordination. This is the authority to direct subordinates. Third, authority is used to resolve exceptions arising from imperfections in the solutions to the fundamental problems of organizing. This is authority as dispute resolution. These facets of authority are often bundled together in organizations, though it is not obvious if this must universally be so. I argue that authority can be delegated in two fundamentally different ways: in terms of a commitment to refrain from ex ante or ex post intervention.

Smith, Holly M. Assessing the Hybrid Solution. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199560080.003.0013.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Chapter 13 completes the development and assessment of the Hybrid approach. Final developments involve introducing the concept of an action’s being “decision-mandated,” redefining “subjective obligatoriness” using this concept, and requiring (in order to avoid reemergence of the moral laundry list) that rankings of the guides at all levels be modally robust relative to the governing Code C. Nonetheless some agents may experience forms of sophisticated uncertainty about which act should be chosen according to this Constrained Standards Hybrid approach. In such cases, hopefully rare, there is no subjectively obligatory act and there is no way for the agent to indirectly apply her moral theory. Even so, the Constrained Standards Hybrid approach appears to be the best solution to the problems of error and uncertainty despite the fact that it cannot wholly solve the epistemic limitations that agents may confront.

Résumé :
This chapter shows that the Main Lemma implies the main theorem. It proves Theorem (10.1) by inductively applying the Main Lemma in order to construct a sequence of solutions of the Euler-Reynolds system. At each stage of the induction, an energy function is chosen along with a parameter whose choice determines the growth of the frequency parameter and the decay of the energy level. A base case lemma is then established, after which the proof of the Main Theorem (10.1) is presented so that the Main Lemma implies the Main Theorem. The Main Lemma is employed to approximately prescribe the energy increment of the correction. The solution obtained at the end of the process is nontrivial.

Résumé :
The initial value problem of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations is explained. Leray’s classic study of it (using Picard iteration) is simplified and described in the language of physics. The ideas of Lebesgue and Sobolev norms are explained. The L2 norm being the energy, cannot increase. This gives sufficient control to establish existence, regularity and uniqueness in two-dimensional flow. The L3 norm is not guaranteed to decrease, so this strategy fails in three dimensions. Leray’s proof of regularity for a finite time is outlined. His attempts to construct a scale-invariant singular solution, and modern work showing this is impossible, are then explained. The physical consequences of a negative answer to the regularity of Navier–Stokes solutions are explained. This chapter is meant as an introduction, for physicists, to a difficult field of analysis.

This chapter describes the basic background for small angle scattering starting with a simple description of the experiment and geometric theory of scattering. It describes the nature of the data produced and the information contained within that data and how relationship between real and reciprocal space in the context of solution scattering. The concept of spherical averaging is described along with its implications and effects on the available structural information from experiment. The chapter describes important fundamental concepts in solution scattering such as the pair distribution function, contrast, and resolution and information content. The chapter is presented so as to promote an intuitive understanding of the theoretical foundations of solution scattering, rather than a rigorous treatment of them.

Résumé :
Chapter 3 focuses on the high-Reynolds number flow of an incompressible fluid near the trailing edge of a flat plate. It begins with Goldstein’s (1930) solution for a viscous wake behind the plate, and shows that the displacement effect of the wake produces a singular pressure gradient near the trailing edge. It further shows that this singularity leads to a formation triple-deck viscous-inviscid interaction region that occupies a small vicinity of the trailing edge. A detailed analysis of the flow in each tier of the triple-deck structure is conducted based on the asymptotic analysis of the Navier–Stokes equations. As a result, the so-called ‘interaction problem’ is formulated. It concludes with the numerical solution of so-called ‘interaction problem’.

Robb, David. Power for the Mental as Such. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198796572.003.0014.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
An adequate solution to the problem of mental causation should deliver not just the efficacy of mental properties, but the efficacy of mental properties as such, of mentality in its own right. But this appears to block an identity solution from the outset. Any property that’s both mental and physical, the argument goes, has a dual nature, and this just reintroduces the problem of mental causation, now framed in terms of these two natures. But a powers ontology promises to save the identity theory, at least from this problem. Such an ontology identifies a mental property’s mental and physical “natures” with just the property itself. A mental property is, at once, both wholly mental and wholly physical, so that to causally engage the physical nature of a mental property is to engage its mental nature as well.

Résumé :
This article considers the so-called loop equations satisfied by integrals over random matrices coupled in a chain as well as their recursive solution in the perturbative case when the matrices are Hermitian. Random matrices are used in fields such as the study of multi-orthogonal polynomials or the enumeration of discrete surfaces, both of which are based on the analysis of a matrix integral. However, this term can be confusing since the definition of a matrix integral in these two applications is not the same. The article discusses these two definitions, perturbative and non-perturbative, along with their relationship. It first provides an overview of a matrix integral before comparing convergent and formal matrix integrals. It then describes the loop equations and their solution in the one-matrix model. It also examines matrices coupled in a chain plus external field and concludes with a generalization of the topological recursion.

Résumé :
It is rare to find a philosopher so fixated on a single issue as the much-neglected thinker, prominent at the court of Shah ʿAbbās, Mīr Dāmād. His corpus is very much concerned with reconciling the key theological dispute between the “philosophical” position holding that the cosmos exists as a logical consequence of the principle and hence a cosmos that is coeternal with God, and the theological (scriptural even) imperative that God creates out of nothing in time. Mīr Dāmād offers a solution that mirrors some early modern scholastic approaches to middle knowledge and a way to reconcile eternal and temporal origination of the cosmos through the notion of “perpetual creation” (ḥudūth dahrī). We consequently find thinkers in the later Safavid-Mughal period contesting this solution, with some key students of Mīr Dāmād defending it. But broadly it remained an artifact of Islamic intellectual history in the early modern period.

Résumé :
This chapter describes another interesting approach to the study of invariant sets provided by the so-called weak KAM theory, developed by Albert Fathi. This approach can be considered as the functional analytic counterpart of the variational methods discussed in the previous chapters. The starting point is the relation between KAM tori (or more generally, invariant Lagrangian graphs) and classical solutions and subsolutions of the Hamilton–Jacobi equation. It introduces the notion of weak (non-classical) solutions of the Hamilton–Jacobi equation and a special class of subsolutions (critical subsolutions). In particular, it highlights their relation to Aubry–Mather theory.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
As populations continue to increase, society produces more and more waste. Yet it is becoming increasingly difficult to build new landfills, and the existing landfills are causing significant environmental damage. Finding solutions is not simple; the problem is enormous in size, vital in terms of its impact on the environment, and complex in scope. This book provides a vast look at solid waste management in North America and seeks solutions to the waste crisis. It describes the magnitude and complexity of the problem, focusing on municipal wastes and placing them in the perspective of other wastes such as hazardous, biochemical, and radioactive debris. It describes the components of an integrated waste management program, including recycling, composting, landfills, and waste incinerators, and it presents in detail the scientific and engineering principles underlying these technologies. To illustrate both the problems and solutions of waste management programs, the authors provide seven case histories, among them the Fresh Kills (Staten Island, New York), the East Carbon Landfill (Utah), and the Lancaster County Municipal Waste Incinerator (Pennsylvania). The Waste Crisis is unique in its attempt to analyze waste management in a broader societal context and to propose solutions based on basic principles. And by doing so, it encourages readers to challenge commonly held perceptions and to seek new and better ways of dealing with waste. As such, this book deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone who deals with or feels the need to confront the growing problems of waste management.

Résumé :
The Food-Water-Energy (FWE) nexus represents, above all, a perspective, a way of looking at the world, the problems, the solutions, providing a view of the three main resource systems of food, water and energy, not in isolation, but as a system, with many and diverse cross-links between the subsystems. So, analytically speaking, it is a unifying concept, an antidote to the relentless pressures towards reductionism. Human society and its interactions with the natural environment form a dynamic socio-ecological system of such impressive complexity that reductionist approaches seem inevitable to make research and management on the subject viable. This development is not just an illusion - this book already presents some real examples of inter and transdisciplinary approaches, with the FWE nexus as a shared lens to better observe where problems occur and where sustainable solutions can be found.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The book stages an architectural encounter between affordance theory, affect theory and process-oriented philosophy. Why Ecologies of Architecture, instead of just Architecture? Why territorialisation? To be worthy of the event. To speak of ecology is to uphold irreducibility, embrace non-entailment and thus make sense. Sense does not come ready-made. Sense making is a matter of ‘technicity’ in Simondonian terms: a force of psychosocial invention and cultural transformation. In a desperate attempt to catch up with forms of contemporary media culture, architects tend to perpetuate earlier notions of culture as representation rather than culture as modes of existence. Architecture has yet to break with culture as reflection still firmly embedded in its parochial concepts. When a society manipulates its matter it is not a reflection of culture, it is culture. To speak of the ecologies of architecture is to break with judgement for experience. Experimentation comes before interpretation. If to think differently we have to feel differently then the design of built environment has no other purpose but to transform us. It qualifies as a major psychotropic practice. While engineering is solution-oriented, architecture stays with the problem so as to tease out a creative potential. After all, problems always get the solution they ‘deserve’.

Résumé :
While many doubt that purely empirical claims can entail any moral claim, moral premises often appear to have empirical entailments. However, unless the moral premises are treated as stipulated assumptions, it seems like a serious mistake to infer empirical conclusions from moral premises that entail them. The puzzle is trying to plausibly explain why this is so. This chapter surveys and rejects some proposed solutions. Learning what we can from these failed solutions, a proposal is advanced. The chapter argues that every attempted moral science inference faces a dilemma. The moral premise(s), if true, will be contingent on some empirical fact or not. If not, the moral scientist must employ a false premise or rely on non-moral assumptions that already entail the conclusion. On the other horn, if the moral premises are independent of empirical facts, the premises will entail that some fact we know to be contingent is necessary.

In the context of falls in extractive commodities prices since 2011, this chapter examines the history of thinking about the interplay between extractive industries and economic development. Just as ‘the resource curse’ fails as a generic explanation on account of the huge diversity in country contexts, so does the one-size-fits-all governance solution, which international aid agencies, industry, and banks have promoted in support of ‘extractives-led growth’ since the early 2000s. Asking why the sector has not in many cases yielded more durable economic gains reveals the need for greater attention to a country’s capacity to diversify, options for pacing development, and appropriate performance measures.

In this final chapter, I want to investigate what the theory of truth developed so far tells us about the Liar paradox (and other paradoxes involving truth). I’ll begin by reviewing the paradox (§9.1) and why it is such a difficult issue to solve (§9.2). I’ll then argue that approaches which weaken the underlying logic (§§9.3–9.5), or restrict or alter the T-scheme (§9.6), are not good options. Instead, I’ll argue that our account of propositions from chapter 8 already provides an adequate solution: there is no proposition for the Liar sentence to express (§9.8). I discuss the consequences of this view for meaning and logic in §9.9.

This book explains how to use the bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) model to design and implement parallel algorithms in the areas of scientific computing and big data. Furthermore, it presents a hybrid BSP approach towards new hardware developments such as hierarchical architectures with both shared and distributed memory. The book provides a full treatment of core problems in scientific computing and big data, starting from a high-level problem description, via a sequential solution algorithm to a parallel solution algorithm and an actual parallel program written in the communication library BSPlib. Numerical experiments are presented for parallel programs on modern parallel computers ranging from desktop computers to massively parallel supercomputers. The introductory chapter of the book gives a complete overview of BSPlib, so that the reader already at an early stage is able to write his/her own parallel programs. Furthermore, it treats BSP benchmarking and parallel sorting by regular sampling. The next three chapters treat basic numerical linear algebra problems such as linear system solving by LU decomposition, sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV), and the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The final chapter explores parallel algorithms for big data problems such as graph matching. The book is accompanied by a software package BSPedupack, freely available online from the author’s homepage, which contains all programs of the book and a set of test programs.

Résumé :
China and India will have to radically transform their electric power systems in order to decouple economic growth from unsustainable resource consumption. The development and deployment of renewable energies offers a solution to this challenge. A clean energy transition, however, requires radical changes in the energy system that can only occur if a governing coalition is both willing and able to implement successful RET (renewable energy technology) policies. The authors analyse how this willingness and ability is shaped by the coalition’s power and cohesiveness, societal pressures, and the institutional configuration across levels of governance. In doing so, central drivers are identified and barriers to a clean energy transition in China and India.

Résumé :
The euro is at a crossroads. Not only has it been blamed for having contributed to the European crisis and for preventing a solution, but there is a growing conflict between many in Germany and the European Central Bank (ECB), the guardian of the euro and the common monetary policy. This division and isolated views in Germany are worrisome. Why do politicians, the media, and in particular, economists differ so fundamentally in their views on the euro and monetary policy? How is it possible that in this age, in which information is abundantly available and shared globally, nationality and the environment in which people operate play such a big role? What does it mean for the future of Europe?

Résumé :
Disorders of peripheral nerves are one of the most common neurological problems today and include the increasing number of people with diabetes worldwide and those with inherited neuropathy, toxic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, inflammatory neuropathy, radiculopathies, and, increasingly, traumatic nerve injuries. Neuropathic pain is a growing problem without solution. In this chapter, ten landmark papers in peripheral nerve disorders have been selected, covering Bell’s palsy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, paraneoplastic neuropathy, neurophysiology, familial amyloid polyneuropathy, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, toxic neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and Guillain–Barré syndrome. These important papers set the stage for many subsequent advances in the field but may be forgotten now, so they are brought to the reader’s attention.

Résumé :
Friedrich Schleiermacher was concerned throughout his career with the problem of epistemic fit, and his eventual solution belongs to the Reformation tradition according to which God can be apprehended only by faith. His key claims are as follows: (a) that God is the one upon whom all that exists depends absolutely; (b) that God can be apprehended as God only insofar as everything, including oneself, is apprehended as absolutely dependent upon God; (c) that humans are ‘God-forgetful,’ insofar as we apprehend the world as if it were independent, and, so, misapprehend God; and (d) that we can be redeemed from our God-forgetfulness, and so apprehend God properly, only insofar as the perfect God-consciousness of Christ is mediated to us by his Spirit. For Schleiermacher, then, one can stand in a proper epistemic relationship to God only on the basis of God’s redeeming love.

Résumé :
Throughout the world, communities are increasingly facing environmental challenges. Youth can both contribute to solutions to these problems and develop civically from their efforts to do so. Youth played a crucial role at the beginning of the 20th century in transforming agriculture, and we suggest that youth today have the potential to inform and advance environmental practices. We describe how linking youth to community institutions to address community environmental issues can provide a context for civic development and also address what may be the central challenge to community life in the future.

Zeitlin, Vladimir. Rotating Shallow-Water model with Horizontal Density and/or Temperature Gradients. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198804338.003.0014.

Résumé :
The derivation of rotating shallow-water equations by vertical averaging and columnar motion hypothesis is repeated without supposing horizontal homogeneity of density/potential temperature. The so-called thermal rotating shallow-water model arises as the result. The model turns to be equivalent to gas dynamics with a specific equation of state. It is shown that it possesses Hamiltonian structure and can be derived from a variational principle. Its solution at low Rossby numbers should obey the thermo-geostrophic equilibrium, replacing the standard geostrophic equilibrium. The wave spectrum of the model is analysed, and the appearance of a whole new class of vortex instabilities of convective type, resembling asymmetric centrifugal instability and leading to a strong mixing at nonlinear stage, is demonstrated.

Résumé :
Does the contextualist seek to dissolve disputes over skepticism in such a way that all parties to them come out being right? And does she use a “perfectly general strategy” for doing so? Is she ignoring the traditional epistemological topic of whether we really know things, instead addressing how the word “know” is or should be used? Is she engaged in philosophy of language instead of epistemology? Is she addressing the more important types of skeptic? Are key aspects of her position inexpressible, by her own lights? Is she subject to a “factivity problem”? These and other questions are answered in this chapter, as the contextualist aspects of the solution to skepticism from Chapter 1 are carefully explained and defended from objections.

Résumé :
Abstract This book explores animal evolution and behaviour to explain how humans and birds came to share so much. How did we come to be so bird-like? Considering the answer to this question leads to an examination of the animal world that highlights fundamental and profound aspects of biology. The book looks at the value of movement in animals; the way in which traits such as intelligence, size, long life span, and the birth of very immature young are all interconnected. Above all, it assesses how even very different forms of life, experiencing similar evolutionary pressures from their environments, can hit on similar solutions – the phenomenon known as convergent evolution. It is that which lies at the root of our bird-ishness.
