Résumé :
Modern solar-powered pumping systems are already being utilized in various fields and industrial applications especially in agricultural water irrigation systems where pumping water at a remote location is required with fewer electricity accessibility from the grid is not feasible. PV solely depends on solar hours per day and it is not reliable when a location exhibits variable weather conditions, such as in Malaysia, having 12 solar hours daily but maximum 5-6 peak performance hours are as usually achieved due to the cloudy and rainy nature of the weather. In this case, PV-grid is not able to generate power as per daily demand and would create voltage sags, swell, and power outage when it is directly connected with the water pumping system for irrigation. To overcome this problem, a PV-DVR solar water pumping system (PV-DVRWP) is proposed in this paper that can mitigate power quality issues arising from PV-grid side such as voltage sags, voltage swells, and power outage by injecting the required amount of voltage into the line to maintain constant load voltage supply. The DVR controller strategy uses dq-abc frame mechanism to extract fault signals by using Park’s transformation method, PID, and hysteresis band PWM signal generator to drive the inverter of DVR connected with a battery storage system. The proposed methodology of the PV-DVRWP system mitigates power quality issues occurring from the PV-grid side by injecting compensating voltage as well as being able to support water pumping systems in case of power outage for a three-phase system.

Résumé :
Due to some issues faced in rural areas such as increasing water demand, the limited reach of electricity, as well as the scarcity of fossil fuel and its negative impact on the environment, renewable energy water pumping systems emerges as an excellent solution to solve those problems. In this case, the components in the renewable energy water pumping system ought to be optimized to improve the effectiveness of the system. This study was aimed at developing and analyzing an optimization model for the sizing of solar-powered water pumping systems for domestic applications. The sizing algorithm was developed using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) in MATLAB software. As a result of optimization, a summary of the main findings was provided, which include the optimal values for the number of solar panels, water tank capacity, and water pump power that minimize system costs and fulfill the water demand simultaneously. To investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm, several case studies have been evaluated by varying the total dynamic head (TDH) and water demands. In summary, TDH value primarily affects the number of PV panels and pump power, leaving the water tank capacity unchanged. However, the variations in water demand can impact all three parameters: the number of PV panels, water tank capacity, and water pump power. Overall, by applying the PSO method in the sizing algorithm of a solar-powered water pumping system, the cost could be minimized, and it would be able to cover the cost of water storage that supports the water demand of a certain application.

Résumé :
A solar pumping model is proposed in this paper using a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor. Zeta converter is used as a DC-DC link between the voltage source inverter and the PV array. Zeta converter enables soft starting of the BLDC motor and the speed control is achieved by simple variation of DC link voltage, thereby eliminating the need for complex switching circuitry. Zeta converter belongs to the class of buck-boost converter hence offers a wide range of operating voltage. The proposed model is simple and cost-effective so it can be practically implemented with minimum cost. The proposed model is tested for its suitability in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.

Résumé :
Dynamics in rainfall patterns due to climate change are posing a threat to crop production globally. The core issue of food security is expected to intensify, and improving crop yield using motorized power irrigation mechanisms can help in curtailing the impact of drought and changing weather patterns to meet the crop water requirement. To meet the energy demand of irrigation systems, this paper explores the use of hybrid energy sources, i.e., wind and solar energy, taking Shaqra Saudi Arabia as case study. This paper presents a systematic case study that evaluates crop water requirements for 3 different crops using the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s software CROPWAT 8.0 and converts the water requirement into energy demand to design the water pumping system. The energy requirement water pumping system is used to design a hybrid energy system using HOMER PRO 3.14.4 that can reliably meet the energy demand. The results suggests that, contrary to the common consideration in Saudi Arabia, a hybrid of wind and solar energy proves to be more cost effective and yields a higher amount of energy. The results suggest that a significant reduction in cost can be achieved with a hybrid energy system as compared to a solar PV system only.

Résumé :
Nigeria is endowed with abundant energy resources, both conventional and renewable, which can potentially provide the country with a sufficient capacity to meet the ambitions of both urban and rural Nigerians of a full, nationwide electrification level. Yet, Nigeria has one of the lowest consumption rates of electricity per capita in Africa. With the demand superseding the generation, there is inequitable access of rural communities to the electricity service in the country. There are inherent obstacles militating against the effective implementation of an orderly energy policy in Nigeria. The inefficiencies over shadowing the allocation of energy resources coupled with the near depletion of fossil fuels, make it imperative for the country to exploit its huge natural renewable resources to avoid a worsening energy supply scenario and provide feasible solar water pump to rural dwellers. This paper presents the applications of solar water pumping which are already quite significant and are growing at steady rate. Solar energy is suitable for small-scale water pumping in remote areas where the demand is regular, such as for drinking water, but it may also be used for irrigation. Most areas in Nigeria have climates suitable for solar pumping. A review is given of the use of solar energy for water pumping to improve the living conditions of the population in rural areas and to develop techniques for utilization of solar energy in a tropical environment condition. Results, suggests that, solar powered water pumping must be encouraged, promoted, invested, implemented, and demonstrated by full scale in Nigeria.

Résumé :
This thesis presents designing and modelling of water pumping system powered by solar energy and comprising of BLDC motor drive. It manifests the performance comparison between Zeta, Sepic and Cuk converter based output conditioning of SPV array as well. As the solar insolation level is not constant, SPV array output is controlled using Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) along DC-DC converter in order to ensure maximum power usage from SPV array. MPPT is implemented using Incremental Conductance (INC) algorithm along with Zeta, Sepic and Cuk converters to power BLDC motor drive. The DC- DC converters along with the entire simulation are analyzed for peak insolation level as well as varying insolation level and comparison has been performed on the basis of performance characteristics. The BLDC motor is fed using a six-pulse converter which is controlled using Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique which facilitate maximization of efficiency of whole system. The simulation results are obtained from model created in MATLAB (Simulink) environment.

Résumé :
This study has been conducted as a Minor Field Study (MFS). It focuses on solar water pumping for small-scale farmers in the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. The purpose is to investigate the possibilities for rural farmers to operate their irrigation with solar power instead of their current option: fossil fuels, primarily petrol. The study was conducted in three phases, starting with pre-study in Sweden, followed by field study in Tanzania from January to March 2015 and finishing with summarizing and calculating in Sweden. Fuel powered water pumping has a cheap capital cost; however, it is expensive and problematic to maintain and operate. Solar powered water pumping is almost completely opposite. It has a higher initial cost; however, it is considerably cheaper to run. The results indicate that the investment in solar power might be too expensive for the farmers, as long as they do not receive external financial and educational support. Assuming that the farmers are able to obtain a solar water pumping system, results show that they will benefit and save a considerably amount of money over a long period of time. Also, solar water pumping is environmentally friendly compared to the systems in Tanzania today.

Résumé :
Thesis (MTech (Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005
Potable water, and especially the accessibility to it, is an essential part of everyday life. Of particular note, is the challenge that residents of remote rural African villages face in order to gain access to this basic requirement. Specifically, the rural areas in the Northern Cape (Province north of Cape Town) region in South Africa is one such example that illustrates this problem very well. In order to address the requirements for drinkable water, various types of water pumping technologies have been used. Up to now, the two competing water pumping systems, diesel and photovoltaic (PV), have been the primary technologies deployed in selected sites in the Northern Cape. The manual data collection of water pumping system data in the Northern Cape is fraught with impracticalities such as travel costs and requirements for skilled personnel. Therefore, as a preliminary step to accelerate development and testing, a local experimental laboratory PV water pumping rig was set-up within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Cape University of Technology. A short-term analysis was performed over a period of three weeks on the rig and the experimental results indicated the following: array efficiency of 16.3%, system efficiency of 15.0% and an average system efficiency of 1.47%. However, the results do indicate that long-term monitoring of PV water pumping systems can be suitable in serving to determine dynamic system performance and system life cycle costs. The purpose of this project is two-fold - firstly, to present the results on the work done on the experimental PV system.

Résumé :
In the villages along the Amazon river, the access to clean drinking water is lacking. In Progreso, the Swedish foundation Ankarstiftelsen and the non-governmental organization Entropika have installed a water purification system to solve this problem. The water used in the purification system is today pumped from a tributary to the Amazon river with a gasoline pump. This comes with social, ecologic and economic problems. To solve these problems, a solar water pumping system has been developed. After a preparing literature study on the topic, a field study was done to find relevant data. From this, an Excel program was made to optimize a suitable solution. Together with suggestions from three companies, two with a surface pump and one with a submersible pump, the system including a submersible pump was considered the most preferable. This mainly due to lower cost, weight and maintenance. Further, the suggestions were used to control the accuracy of the developed Excel program. This program can be used for future optimizations of systems with similar character.

Water provision in rural areas represents a significant challenge, especially within the context of resource and sanitation in developing countries. High set-up costs, lack of installation expertise and reliability issues, arising from fluctuating operational conditions, have prevented many people from receiving the full benefit of automated pumping systems. The specific aim of this thesis is to assess the feasibility of using a tunable, induced flow subsystem as a means of optimising the power utilization and performance of a centrifugal pump over a wider range of operating conditions than typically expected. More generally, the research presented is undertaken to reduce the high implementation costs and localised limitations of rural water pumps by developing the theory towards a ‘’one-size-fits-all’’ pumping system. The theoretical analysis of an induced flow centrifugal pumping system is presented, coupled with the analogous electrical system. The results of simulations performed using both systems are compared to experimental results, obtained using an induced flow subsystem (IFS) test rig constructed at the University of Liverpool. All sets of results demonstrate consistent IFS characteristics, identifying its capability to maintain maximum power point (MPP) operation of the centrifugal pump irrespective of load. Further, the experimental results reveal a boost in output pressure which enables the pump to achieve an improved hydraulic power and increased operating range over the same system without an IFS. It is concluded that, through the addition of an IFS, the performance of a centrifugal pump may be decoupled from its operating head, expanding its range of serviceable conditions and demonstrating potential to develop a ‘’one-size-fits-all’’ system. Ultimately, this could offer a cheaper and more reliable supply of a resource which is vital to life in any rural location: clean water.

Résumé :
Many parts of the western US is rural in nature and consequently do not have electrical distribution lines in many parts of farms and ranches. Distribution line extension costs can run from $15,000 to $25,000 per mile, thereby making availability of electricity to small water pumping projects economically unattractive. Solar photo-voltaic (PV) powered water pumping is more cost effective in these small scale applications. Many western states including Wyoming are passing through fifth year of drought with the consequent shortages of water for many applications. Wyoming State Climatologist is predicting a possible 5–10 years of drought. Drought impacts the surface water right away, while it takes much longer to impact the underground aquifers. To mitigate the effect on the livestock and wildlife, Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal initiated a solar water pumping initiative in cooperation with the University of Wyoming, County Conservation Districts, Rural Electric Cooperatives, and ranching organizations. Solar water pumping has several advantages over traditional systems; for example, diesel or propane engines require not only expensive fuels, they also create noise and air pollution in many remote pristine areas. Solar systems are environment friendly, low maintenance and have no fuel cost. In this paper the design, installation and performance monitoring of the solar system for small scale remote water pumping will be presented.
