Résumé :
The upfront cost and technical difficulties of constructing a Solar Updraft Tower is its current bottleneck. Based on the case study of Wuhan New Energy Institute headquarters, this paper proposes to integrate an urban Solar Updraft Tower with a hi-rise building design. The integrated design can reduce the construction cost greatly: the solar chimney integrated with the elevator shaft can avoid large investment on a detached chimney structure; the heat collector can be integrated with the roof garden to provide shaded public space. This type of small-scale, distributed Solar Updraft Tower is relatively low-cost and easy promoting. Potentially, it can build up a distributed energy system as a supplement for the power grid. Furthermore, it can provide valuable experimental data for future researches on large scale Solar Updraft Towers.

Résumé :
Based on a traditional integrated solar combined cycle system, a novel integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) system is proposed, which preferentially integrates the solar energy driven lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system that is used to cool the gas turbine inlet air in this paper. Both the Aspen Plus and EBSILON softwares are used to build the models of the overall system. Both the thermodynamic performance and economic performance of the new system are compared with those of the traditional ISCC system without the inlet air cooling process. The new system can regulate the proportions of solar energy integrated in the refrigerator and the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) based on the daily meteorological data, and the benefits of the solar energy integrated with the absorption refrigeration are greater than with the HRSG. The results of both the typical day performance and annual performance of different systems show that the new system has higher daily and annual system thermal efficiencies (52.90% and 57.00%, respectively), higher daily and annual solar photoelectric efficiencies (31.10% and 22.31%, respectively), and higher daily and annual solar photoelectric exergy efficiencies (33.30% and 23.87%, respectively) than the traditional ISCC system. The solar energy levelized cost of electricity of the new ISCC system is 0.181 $/kW·h, which is 0.061 $/kW·h lower than that of the traditional ISCC system.

Résumé :
A solar still requires only two processes: evaporation and condensation. In a solar still, evaporation occurs because of the pressure difference caused by the difference in the temperature of the water and that of the glass cover, while condensation occurs when the water vapour comes into contact with a surface cooler than its dew point. Condensers have been proven to effectively increase the productivity of solar stills. This study aims to compare the efficiency of two developed solar stills with integrated conical condensers to that of a conventional solar still; it also measures the effectiveness of the condenser. Three types of solar stills were used in this study: a conventional solar still (CSS), developed solar still 1 (DSS-1) and developed solar still 2 (DSS-2). All three stills were tested simultaneously. The three solar stills are all made of aluminium with a thickness of 3 mm. The software Ansys Fluent 18.2 was used to analyse the computational fluid dynamics in the stills. The results showed that the efficiency of the CSS, DSS-1 and DSS-2 were 23%, 36.5% and 46.4%, respectively. The freshwater yields of DSS-1 and DSS-2 were, respectively, 1.17 and 1.81 times greater than that of the CSS. These increases in the productivity of DSS-1 and DSS-2 are significantly influenced by the shape of the condenser integrated in these two solar stills; the effectiveness of this condenser was 85.57% and 91.25%, respectively, in DSS-1 and DSS-2. In a simulation, the condenser’s effectiveness was 99.85%.

Résumé :
To improve the positioning accuracy of autonomous celestial navigation systems when flying in formation, we exploit the fact that the sole light source in the solar system is the Sun to directly provide positioning information for relative navigation. We term this solar Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) navigation for formation flying. Solar light has the potential to provide a solar Time of Arrival (TOA) because of its unstable intensity. However, the solar TOA cannot be used for navigation because it has no baseline. To solve this problem, we took the difference between the solar TOAs of two spacecraft (the solar TDOA) as the basis for navigational measurement. The solar TDOA represents the relative distance between two spacecraft in a radial direction. However, whilst the solar TDOA is insensitive to solar direction errors, a free-standing solar TDOA navigation system is not observable. We therefore combined the solar TDOA with the Mars direction and inter-satellite link navigation system, to form an integrated solar TDOA/Mars direction/inter-satellite link navigation method for formation flying. Simulation results indicate that solar TDOA-based integrated navigation for formation flying can provide highly accurate navigation information, especially under relative conditions.

Résumé :
This paper presents design considerations for an integrated design of solar communities highlighting the interactive nature of various design parameters to improve the energy performance of these neighborhoods. These considerations are illustrated through practical design examples of different neighborhood scenarios and individual buildings, based on extensive studies and analysis of energy performance of a wide spectrum of buildings and neighborhoods. The examples fall under two general categories – design at the neighborhood level, and design at the individual building level. Neighborhood design is illustrated by examples of homogeneous residential neighborhoods consisting of 2-storied housing units and of a mixed-rise neighborhood. Design of individual buildings focuses primarily on design of the envelope – consisting of roof and façades – for maximizing energy generation potential, as a function of height and relative position to adjacent buildings. In addition to examples of application of the design considerations, the paper outlines the process of design of solar communities and the role of simulations in the design process.

Résumé :
Solar thermal collector converts solar radiation energy into useful thermal energy and transfers to a transport fluid flowing through the system. The collected energy can be used either direct to space or water heating equipment, or to a thermal storage for later use. Along with fast development, not only domestic hot water supply is needed, but also space heating and cooling are required. Also, limited roof space is another key barrier that should be considered. Furthermore, most of the building integration with solar collectors are mounted on the roof top by flat or tilt angle at present. It is considered to be a failure of low level architectural quality because the collector is used only for application and seems as an independent technical element of the building. With the consideration of the above, novel type of solar collector has been proposed to realize the utilization and offset the barriers. This novel solar collectors is especially suitable to supply domestic hot water, and combines with ASHP for multi-function, space heating and cooling as well as domestic hot water supply. Additionally, it is well integrated with high-rise residential buildings, which is good for aesthetic.

Résumé :
A solar street lamp is a lamp technology that utilizes solar cell to obtain electrical energy during the daylight hour by solar radiation and then use the electrical energy to provide light at night. Semiintegrated lamp tries to overcome complicated installation and expensive price of normally solar street lamp. Semi-integrated solar street lamp only integrated solar cell, controller, and battery, while lamp is separated using cable. This configuration makes semi-integrated lamp cheaper and easier for installation that is suitable for rural area. Therefore, in this paper we develop semi-integrated type of solar street lamp. The illumination of semi-integrated lamp was measured using lux meter. The power of the lamp was calculated to meet the energy needs for 12 hours. The results show that the semi-integrated solar street lamp with low power LED ~2W has been successfully developed. The solar lamp can be automatically turned on for around 12 hours, from 5:50 PM to 5:31 AM (UTC+7). The illumination average of the lamp is 17.42 lux with 6.97 lux deviation. The measurement result of illumination shows that the solar street lamp has maximum distance of more than 140 cm with 230 cm high of lamp.

Résumé :
In the system solar power has been used for cultivation. Solar photovoltaic cells convert solar energy into electricity through solar photovoltaic (SPV) effect. Generated DC voltage then converted in to AC voltage by pump controller, this AC voltage is used as the input of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). The VFD acts as a motor controller that controls the submersible pump motor by varying the frequency and voltage of its input power supply. The VFD is associated with pump controller. Regulated three phase AC voltage is the output of the pump controller which is directly connected with submersible pump. The water thus drawn from bore wells by a solar water pump is pumped to supply for irrigation purpose as required. This system is full off-grid interfaced system appropriate for the village areas. The main goal of this system is to use solar energy at a minimum running cost. The solar powered project is completely eco friendly and the plant is relatively clean with small maintenance. This project helps to reduce the cost of electricity, as well as minimize the overall agricultural cost.

The present work uses a paraffin-graphite composite as the PCM to increase the conductivity of the PCM matrix. The paraffin’s melting point is around 89°C, which is appropriate for use in single-effect absorption systems. The mathematical model that describes the thermal process in the PCM is presented and differs from the analysis of conventional flat plate solar collectors making use of the lumped capacitance method which neglects spatial variations. The proposed model is calibrated favorably with a more detailed mathematical model that uses finite differences and considers temporal and spatial variations. Results for the collectors’ thermal performance are presented along with the effects of the composition of the PCM. The results for the PCM integrated collector proposed here are very encouraging. Therefore, there is an indication that conventional storage tanks may be replaced for the PCM integrated in the solar collector.

Résumé :
Hybrid systems have gained significant attention among researchers and scientists worldwide due to their ability to integrate solar cells and supercapacitors. Subsequently, this has led to rising demands for green energy, miniaturization and mini-electronic wearable devices. These hybrid devices will lead to sustainable energy becoming viable and fossil-fuel-based sources of energy gradually being replaced. A solar photovoltaic (SPV) system is an electronic device that mainly functions to convert photon energy to electrical energy using a solar power source. It has been widely used in developed countries given that they have advanced photovoltaic (PV) technology that reduces dependence on fossil fuels for energy generation. Furthermore, a supercapacitor is an alternative solution for replacing heavy batteries and it is a system with a prominent high power density and a long life cycle. Its unique properties of high capacitance with low voltage limits lead to this highly in-demand material being incorporated into goods and services that are produced by the electrical and electronics industries. It is another option for grid-based power or large batteries. Since supercapacitors have the ability to store huge amounts of energy, they allow for a novel system that integrates supercapacitors with solar cells in which energy generation and energy storage are combined into one system. This paper explores the common materials that are used for solar cells and supercapacitors, the working mechanisms, the effectiveness of the integrated device and the technical challenges that are encountered when refining this device. Hence, this review serves as a guide for choosing the right materials and methods in order to produce an integrated PV solar cell–energy storage device for various applications.

Résumé :
A novel design concept is presented of a high-temperature solar central receiver in which solar energy is directly absorbed by fluids flowing in tubes and undergoing a chemical reaction. The utilization of this concept in a design of a solar Methane-Reforming reactor is discussed, especially as it applies to chemical energy transport systems. An analysis of heat balance and energy efficiency of both Steam-Methane and CO2-Methane reforming presents the technological barriers and potential in applying these systems for the transport of solar energy.

Résumé :
In order to reduce the increasing energy consumption for the domestic demands of existing single-family housing and take advantage of frequent building enlargements, this paper presents a methodology and supporting software tool for determining the optimal design configuration of an attic with integrated solar collectors. The analysis procedure is based on parametric modeling, energy simulation and the use of evolutionary algorithms for finding optimal designs. It has been implemented as a Web-platform for public use that provides users with a proposal of an attic shape with maximum solar energy collection, maximum living space and minimum construction envelope for each house according its size and orientation. The attic integrates PV, thermal and hybrid solar panels on one side of the roof. This paper describes the methodology and software design, assessment of the Web-platform usage and case-studies to verify its behavior. In a matter of minutes, the Web-platform enables users to select a specific attic design for each house that has integrated solar collectors that can produce energy to cover almost 100% of domestic energy consumption. The attics designed provide a nearly 30% increase in living space through the extension of one to four rooms, and the construction cost of the envelope is similar to that of a standard housing extension.

Résumé :
Solar energy is a new renewable energy. Using solar energy to generate electricity is an effective means to achieve sustainable development. The huge roof at the top of the airport is a natural interface to receive solar energy, which can be used to supply the energy needed by the airport through building integrated photovoltaic design. However, due to the curved shape of the airport roof, there are limitations in solar energy acquisition and construction of the airport roof. In this paper, the method of “ruled surface fitting-solar radiation analysis-modular unit arrangement” is used to optimize the shape of the non-linear airport roof, and convert the complex roof surface shape into a straight line with good sunlight performance and easy construction. The ruled surface can better integrate BIPV and nonlinear airport, and improve the solar power generation efficiency of the building, thus improving the sustainable performance of the building.
