This article introduces and explains some of the most relevant features of the free software philosophy formulated by Richard M. Stallman in the 1980s. The free software philosophy and the free software movement built on it historically preceded the open source movement by a decade and provided some of the key technological, legal and ideological foundations of the open source movement. Thus, in order to study the ideology of open source and its differences with regard to other modes of software production, it is important to understand the reasoning and the presuppositions included in Stallman’s free software philosophy.

E-learning is one of the predominant disciplines in the current era as every action of the normal human becomes online. Besides, E-learning pedagogy plays a major role in the Social Service paradigm in such a way that giving free education through the web on-demand. The work aims to focus on providing free online workshops and tutorials on software development tools to various other Universities, colleges, schools in and around Majmaa and Riyadh as part of community service to society. The users of the system are faculty, students of other Institutes and schools. The faculties and students who undergo the MUE-Learning can acquire the knowledge of currently available (FOSS) Free Open Source Software and how to use them to develop software applications. The framework includes the preparation of teaching-learning materials, online teaching, and student's assessments. The LMS tool Blackboard is embedded with the proposed framework to enable online teaching. Using the framework, the impact of FOSS education to the school and University students were measured through qualitative and quantitative parameters and proven that more than 75% of success in teaching Free-Open-Source-Technologies to variety of education institutes in and around Majmaa, KSA. Moreover, the comparison on the knowledge gathering in between male and female through different study modes synchronous and asynchronous teaching-learning was statistically tested and results are discussed. The approach meets the challenges of obtaining innovative and effective learning.

The allure of free, industrial-strength software has many enterprises rethinking their open source strategies. However, selecting an appropriate open source software for a given problem or set of requirements is very challenging. The challenges include a lack of generally accepted evaluation criteria and a multitude of eligible open source software projects. The contribution of this work is a set of criteria and a methodology for assessing candidate open source software for fitness of purpose. To test this evaluation model, several important open source projects were examined. The results of this model were compared against the published results of an evaluation performed by the Defense Research and Development Canada agency. The proposed evaluation model relies on publicly accessible data, is easy to perform, and can be incorporated into any open source strategy.

Image registration is the most critical operation in remote sensing applications to enable location based referencing and analysis of earth features. This is the first step for any process involving identification, time series analysis or change detection using a large set of imagery over a region. Most of the reliable procedures involve time consuming and laborious manual methods of finding the corresponding matching features of the input image with respect to reference. Also the process, as it involves human interaction, does not converge with multiple operations at different times. Automated procedures rely on accurately determining the matching locations or points from both the images under comparison and the procedures are robust and consistent over time. Different algorithms are available to achieve this, based on pattern recognition, feature based detection, similarity techniques etc. In the present study and implementation, Correlation based methods have been used with a improvement over newly developed technique of identifying and pruning the false points of match. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) have been used to develop the methodology to reach a wider audience, without any dependency on COTS (Commercially off the shelf) software. Standard deviation from foci of the ellipse of correlated points, is a statistical means of ensuring the best match of the points of interest based on both intensity values and location correspondence. The methodology is developed and standardised by enhancements to meet the registration requirements of remote sensing imagery. Results have shown a performance improvement, nearly matching the visual techniques and have been implemented in remote sensing operational projects. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is its viability in production mode environment. This paper also shows that the visualization capabilities of MapWinGIS, GDAL’s image handling abilities and OSSIM’s correlation facility can be efficiently integrated to effectively use in remote sensing based production environment.

Free/open source software users were previously responsible for managing the challenges associated with their software themselves. Recently, a new generation of entrepreneurs seized this emerging market opportunity by positioning themselves as service providers for free/open source software users. Conceptualizing such providers as “institutional entrepreneurs,” we find that due to the nature of the free/open source software context, they exhibit a different set of legitimation actions compared with similar efforts in other contexts. Based on our empirical analysis of free/open source software service providers and drawing on prior theory, we identify two entrepreneurial actions aimed at gaining legitimacy specific to the free/open source software context, namely, product-based theorization actions and evangelization actions. We also demonstrate that institutional entrepreneurship is shaped by the nature of free/open source software products and the openness values at the core of the free/open source software movement. Our work hence underscores the importance of the context of institutional entrepreneurship.

This paper discusses the possibilities of using a new open model based on the principles of Open Source. The scientific contribution represents opportunities for application and improvement for all actors in the process, while creating significant financial savings and impact on the digital divide. This is reflected in the use of legal software that is free, the use of old computer configurations and open access to scientific and university publications. In this way, schools, teachers and students have the opportunity to participate in teaching, work or play, regardless of their financial status.

This paper reports the preliminary results of a study conducted to assess and quantify the adoption of Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) by organisations and enterprises. While almost all organisations use FOSS in some form today, there is a wide variation in the manner and extent to which they do so, and presently no quantitative measure exists that can capture the true picture. The present work has built a model with two sets of parameters that, when fed with relevant data about an organisation, generates a single number, the FOSS Adoption Index (FAI), for that organisation. The index is so defined that the higher its value for an organisation, the greater is the extent of FOSS adoption in that organisation. Beyond the single measure FAI that gives a coarse assessment, the model also allows drilling down to finer levels of granularity that provides deeper insights into the status and role of FOSS within a given organisation. Primary data collected for two classes of organisations through questionnaire based surveys and interviews have been used to demonstrate the working of the model as well as its potential usefulness for real world situations.

There is an ample debate over the quality of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) with mixed research results. The authors show that a reason for these mixed results is that quality is being defined, measured, and evaluated differently. They report the most popular approaches including software structure measures, process measures, and maturity assessment models. The way researchers have built their samples has also contributed to the mixed results with different project properties being considered and ignored. Because FLOSS projects evolve with each release, their quality does too, and it must be measured using metrics that take into account their communities’ commitment to quality rather than just the structure of the resulting code. Challenges exist in defining what constitutes a defect or bug, and the role of modularity in affecting FLOSS quality. The authors suggest three considerations for future research on FLOSS quality models: (1) defect resolution rate, (2) kind of software product, and (3) modularity—both technical and organizational.
