Résumé :
The functions of a software package of 6 programmes developed for retrieving, decoding quality control and formatting of surface and upper air coded data have been presented here in brief. Intelligent use has been made of Fortran- 77 fact1ltles to make these programmes extremely efficient. Global data for surface and upper air received on GTS for an entire day is sorted, decoded & formatted after quality control in about three and a half minutes (CPU time) on VAX 8810 system. The programmes do the management of files and can also be used for decoding the monthly data files of hard copy data. For coding of data, FGGE code has been used with very minor modifications. The results of quality control checks and number of reports received hour wise for each synoptic hour for each WMO block are monitored. Information from both is displayed on the terminal in tabular form and also recorded in disk for monthly archival.

Résumé :
Collaboration structure and temporal dispersion (TD) in teams have been studied independently so far. This study uses Media Synchronicity Theory (MST) to derive hypotheses positing that the structure of collaboration networks in distributed teams changes when those teams are more temporally dispersed. The empirical test of hypotheses using ordinary least squares with archival data from 230 open source software (OSS) projects shows that the collaboration structure networks of those OSS teams that are more temporally dispersed are sparser and more centralised, and these associations are stronger in those teams exhibiting higher relative performance. Theoretical and practical consequences are discussed.

Résumé :
"Easter eggs" are features hidden inside software, and the practice of developers including them is a long-standing global phenomenon. They have seen some investigation in the context of games, but despite their prevalence in non-game software applications, their nature within this context is less clear. We perform a qualitative, investigative analysis of Easter eggs in non-game software application contexts, using primarily archival research including discussion forums, social media posts, and user-created online databases, along with select developer interviews. Our work uncovers the stories behind, motivations for creating, and intended perceptions of Easter eggs, which we present as categories of purposes with illustrative examples. This analysis also informs a categorization and discussion of processes that Easter eggs undergo concerning the social and emotional circumstances of their developers and users. Finally, we use our results to motivate future directions for applying Easter eggs in user interfaces.

Résumé :
This work is a part of the project on creation the linguistic corpus of the fund “Mikhailovsky stanitsa ataman” documents. This fund contains historically valuable administrative documents of the Don Cossacks Army of the 18th-19th centuries, stored in the State Archives of the Volgograd Region. To introduce it to scientific society, a lot of preliminary work to digitize them was done by group of scientists from Volgograd State University headed by Professor O.A. Gorban. In their current form, these documents are suitable for computer processing. The only significant problem is outdated vocabulary and graphics, but it was generally solved in our previous works. At the current stage, the main task is to develop the technical and software parts of the corpus. In fact, this means the creation of an “engine” for a document corpus, that is, software for storing a database of marked-up texts, executing queries to this database, and also providing user-friendly interface that does not require special IT-skills. At the same time, in the process of working on the previous tasks, we decided to integrate the document markup tool into the general corpus software. Thus, the present work is devoted to the development of a REST service that allows you to perform automated morphological analysis of texts, save a special form of processed documents in a database, search in database by a query with morphological features of elements in the texts. The software also provides a function for manual correction of errors that occur in automated analysis of Old Slavonic texts with obsolete characters.

Résumé :
Traditional software development is shifting toward the open-source development model, particularly in the current environment of competitive challenges to develop software openly. The author employs a case study approach to investigate how organizations and their affiliated developers collaborate in the open-source software (OSS) ecosystem TensorFlow (TF). The analysis of the artificial intelligence OSS library TF combines social network analysis (SNA) and an examination of archival data by mining software repositories. The study looks at the structure and evolution of code-collaboration among developers and with the ecosystem's organizational networks over the TF lifespan. These involved organizations play a particularly critical role in development. The research also looks at productivity, homophily, development, and diversity among developers. The results deepen the understanding of OSS communities' collaborative developer and organization patterns. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance and evolution of social networks, diversity, and productivity in ecosystems.

Résumé :
As more and more output from research institutions is born digital, a means for capturing and preserving the results of this investment is required. To begin to understand and address the problems surrounding this task, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories collaborated with MIT Libraries over two years to develop DSpace, an open source institutional repository software system. This paper describes DSpace in the context of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model. Particular attention is given to the preservation aspects of DSpace, and the current status of the DSpace system with respect to addressing these aspects. The reasons for various design decisions and trade-offs that were necessary to develop the system in a timely manner are given, and directions for future development are explored. While DSpace is not yet a complete solution to the problem of preserving digital research output, it is a production-capable system, represents a significant step forward, and is an excellent platform for future research and development.

Résumé :
Traditional archival media such as paper, film, photographs, etc. contain a vast storage of knowledge. Much of this knowledge is applicable to current business and scientific problems, and offers solutions; consequently, there is value in extracting this information. While it is possible to manually extract the content, this technique is not feasible for large knowledge repositories due to cost and time. In this thesis, we develop a system that can extract such knowledge automatically from large repositories. A Graphical User Interface that permits users to indicate the location of the knowledge components (indexes) is developed, and software features that permit automatic extraction of indexes from similar documents is presented. The indexes and the documents are stored in a persistentdata store. The system is tested on a University Registrar’s legacy paper-based transcript repository. The study shows that the system provides a good solution for large-scale extraction of knowledge from archived paper and other media.

Résumé :
Background: With the development of software, its quality is increasingly valued by people. The developing technical ability was absolutely taken to underpin the performance of the developer, and code quality was raised as being related to developer performance, thus code quality could be a measure of developer performance. Developer performance is often influenced by multiple factors. Also, different factors have different impacts on developer performance in different project types. It is important for us to understand the positive and negative factors for developer performance in a certain project. If these factors are valued, developers will have better performance and project will have higher quality.   Objectives: The objective of our study is to identify how factors (developer experience, task size, and team size) impact the developer performance in each case. Though understanding how factors impact the developer performance, developers can have a better performance, which is a big benefit to the quality of project.   Methods: We decided to use the characteristics of commits during the Gerrit code review to measure the committed code quality in our research, and from committed code quality we can measure  the developer performance. We selected two different projects which use Gerrit code review as our cases to conduct our archive study. One is the legacy project, another is the open-source project. Then we selected five common characteristics (the rate of abandoned application code, the rate of abandoned test code, abandoned lines of application code, abandoned lines of test code and build success rate) to measure the code quality The box plot is drawn to visualize the relationship between the factor experience and each characteristic of the commits. And Spearman rank correlation is used to test the correlation between each factor and characteristic of commits from the statistical perspective. Finally, we used the multiple linear regression to test how a specific characteristic of commits impacted by the multiple factors.   Results: The results show that developers with high experience tend to abandon less proportion of their code and abandon less lines of code in the legacy project. Developers with high experience tend to abandon less proportion of their code in the open-source project. There is a similar pattern of the factor task size and the factor amount of code produced in these two cases. Bigger task or more amount of code produced will cause a great amount of code abandoned. Big team size will lead to a great amount of code abandoned in the legacy project.   Conclusions: After we know about how factors (experience, task size, and team size) influence the developers' performance, we have listed two contributions that our research provided:  1. Big task size and big team size will bring negative impact to the developer performance.  2. Experienced developers usually have better performance than onboarded developers. According to these two contributions, we will give some suggestions to these two kinds of projects about how to improve developer performance, and how to assign the task reasonable.

The present work investigates the aplication of the free software Ica atom in one of the biggest brazilian archives: the Marine Archive. This software was created to work in the internet and based in archivistic international rules, like the international rule of register of archivistic authority to group entities, people and families ISAAR (CPF), the international rule of archivistic description ISAD(G) and the International standard for describing institutions with archival holdings-ISDIAH. Despite of being created based on rules indicated by the international Council of Archives - CIA, this work questions until what point the ICA-AToM answers to the process of documental description of the Marine Archive. To mesure the eficiency of this software, in order to garantee the access to the documents of the Marine Archive, a comparison of the metadatas used in the version of ICA-AToM, situated in the Marine Archive with the metadatas stablished by the brazilian archivistic rule of description (NOBRADE), is done in the analysis and by the “modelo de requisitos para sistemas informatizados de gestão arquivistica de documentos” - e-ARQ Brasil. There was an attempt to understand each one of the metadatas especyfied in these rules and relate them to the possible advantages of their use. The result of these comparisons was the realization of a group of metadatas and sugestions for that Marine Archive can optimize the use of this software and of its archivistic description, which is fundamental in the ensuring task the access and preservation of its collection.

AbstractThis chapter of Animating Unpredictable Effects studies how Hollywood became a producer of software and sponsor of R&D. Using archival research of publications and conference records, it charts the computer graphics research group ACM SIGGRAPH’s origins in the military-industrial-academic complex and notes the rise of a new research complex driven by media industries, with the Hollywood blockbuster playing a key role in driving investment. This chapter also studies how the economics of film industries were transformed by R&D using SEC financial filings from studios. This investigation of the economics of R&D helps explain the economic instability of the VFX industry, which has been a key topic of discussion since the closure of Rhythm and Hues and the rise of VFX worker movements.

Résumé :
The National Archives of Bangladesh (NAB) evolved to ensure official custody and physical safety to the archives of Bangladesh. NAB initiated a digitization programme to provide open access to archives. The study focused on different aspects of NAB's open access project in the light of value co-creation perspective. The study is based on review of literature, computation of secondary information and treatment of primary data collected through semi-structured interview. The study identified that all the value co-creation components are available in NAB's open access project but working framework is invisible. Hence, the study proposed a model for value co-creation through balancing resource security and user demand. Hence, the study may help software developers and other archival institutions in designing and implementing open access to their respective organizations' resources. This paper serves as an example to archival institutions that are in the beginning phases of open access research and development.

Résumé :
Open Source Software (OSS) has reached new levels of sophistication and acceptance by users and commercial software vendors. This research creates tests and validates a model for predicting successful development of OSS projects. Widely available archival data was used for OSS projects from Sourceforge.net. The data is analyzed with multiple Data Mining techniques. Initially three competing models are created using Logistic Regression, Decision Trees and Neural Networks. These models are compared for precision and are refined in several phases. Text Mining is used to create new variables that improve the predictive power of the models. The final model is chosen based on best fit to separate training and validation data sets and the ability to explain the relationship among variables. Model robustness is determined by testing it on a new dataset extracted from the SF repository. The results indicate that end-user involvement, project age, functionality, usage, project management techniques, project type and team communication methods have a significant impact on the development of OSS projects.

Résumé :
Free and open source software (FOSS) has been increasingly used both in public and private organizations in order to contain costs, increase software transparency and reliability, and information security, among other reasons. This article identifies and examines the arguments and actors, who have promoted and opposed the use of FOSS in the Turkish public sector. It also analyzes how these actors organize the processes of adoption and presents the discourses that they used to affect the open source-related policy decisions. The methods used e-mail questionnaires directed to IT experts in government, academia, private sector and the media, together with the archival analysis of related documents. It is found that FOSS enhances e-government implementations being relatively secure than proprietary software, low cost, participative, scalable and easy to manage. The article concludes with the evaluation of the current level of FOSS use in Turkish government agencies, an explanation of the process of adoption by presenting a process model of FOSS adoption in Turkey that may be applied in other similar countries and different frames of analysis that shape the adoption process. In this vein, the main aim is to link FOSS to the e-government processes and ultimate aim is to link this manuscript to the grass roots e-governance improvement literature.

Résumé :
Maps—whether they are on paper or online—have become ubiquitous. While maps used to be the purview of a trained cadre of experts and came about with the rise of the nation-state, mapping practices have increasingly become democratized. Now everyone with mapping software and an internet connection can engage in map-based activism and put forth particular geopolitical visions. Maps produced in a conflict region like Israel/Palestine exemplify how various top-down and bottom-up mapping practices speak to how maps can become part of map wars over how to present a territory and its boundaries. Israel/Palestine’s map wars also exemplify how visual rhetoric can become a powerful tool in the war of maps. In order to trace the social history of mapping practices in Israel/Palestine we use various theoretical tools drawn from Science and Technology Studies, sociology, and geography and we draw on archival material, in-depth interviews, and ethnographies to trace the historical significance of maps in Israel/Palestine.

Résumé :
This presentation describes the design and manufacture of a computer controlled x-ray scanning system for the fully automated inspection of waste for hazardous materials. Of particular importance was the necessity to accurately detect various sizes of propane tanks and large heavy metal objects. In addition, rejects had to be accurately identified and each image saved for archival requirements. The equipment utilized, material handling, software development and implementation is detailed herein. The problems of establishing a stable image in a harsh environment required ruggedizing all of the components as well as positive pressure air delivery and air conditioning of the computer and related electronic enclosures. The use of commercially available equipment and latest detector technology were utilized as much as possible to reduce costs and to provide a reliable low maintenance system that also included the ability to conduct diagnostics and software upgrades remotely via computer.

Résumé :
There has been a great deal of interest recently in the problem of long term archiving of digital data. This is especially so in engineering design, where the CAD software tools evolve rapidly but the manufactured products themselves have much longer lifetimes whose support requires archived design data in a usable form. The ISO Open Archival Information Systems (OAIS) Reference Model is a widely used standard for digital archiving, with an essential piece of this model being a file format registry. A file format registry is a system for housing information about file formats that allows for correct interpretation, rendering, storage, and translation of digital files. Currently there exists no file format registry specifically for CAD file formats. This paper explains the purpose of a file format registry for CAD in the greater context of digital archiving, and then presents our approach to creating a CAD file format registry using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) language of the Semantic Web. By creating our file format registry in RDF, we allow archival systems to perform automated reasoning on the stored files. We hope that this paper will increase awareness of this element of engineering design repositories in the research community of this conference.
