Texte intégralThis thesis presents a sociolinguistic analysis of the role of French and Italian in the migration context, notably in the community of francophone Senegalese immigrants in Brescia. In the first part, the first chapter is dedicated to Senegal, which is described in its historical, ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic features. The evolution of the Senegalese diaspora in Europe and Italy is also tackled in its different stages. The second chapter focuses on Brescia, elective hometown of the Senegalese in Italy, because of it socio-economic features which make it a territory particularly favorable to the creation of solidarity networks between Senegalese and Italians. The second part is entirely dedicated to the sociolinguistic analysis of the languages involved in this context. The survey is based on twenty interviews made with a sample of Senegalese immigrants in Brescia, from which the linguistic practices and representations of the subjects, about the languages known and spoken, emerge. In the conclusions of the thesis, a global view on the research carried out and on the method adopted for the survey will be given.

Esta dissertação analisa o cenário plurilíngüe do município de São Bento do Sul, localizado ao norte do estado de Santa Catarina. Na referida cidade, coexistem pelo menos cinco línguas brasileiras de imigração: Bayerisch, Hochdeutsch, ucraniano, polonês e italiano, além de português e LIBRAS, as duas línguas oficiais do Brasil. Estudaram-se mais profundamente neste trabalho os usos, as atitudes e as representações dos falantes com relação às duas línguas minoritárias alemãs: Bayerisch e Hochdeutsch. Para compreender esses aspectos, foi realizado um diagnóstico sociolingüístico que compreendeu três etapas de investigação: 1) entrevistas com alunos de escolas municipais; 2) entrevistas com falantes das duas línguas alemãs mencionadas, de forma a desenhar uma rede de relações, e 3) observação da circulação dessas línguas na cidade e também dos indivíduos, entidades e eventos incentivadores delas, ou seja, indicadores da vitalidade das duas línguas alemãs. Diante das situações de substituição e perda lingüística de todas as línguas minoritárias faladas em São Bento do Sul, propõem-se estratégias com o intuito de revitalizar e sustentar a manutenção dos idiomas na cidade.
This thesis analyzes the plurilingual setting of São Bento do Sul, a city located in the north of the state of Santa Catarina. In the referred city, at least five Brazilian immigration languages coexist: Bayerisch, Hochdeutsch, Ukrainian, Polish and Italian, besides Portuguese and Brazilian Sign Language, both the official languages in Brazil. In this work it was more deeply studied the speakers# uses, attitudes and representations toward the two German minority languages: Bayerisch and Hochdeutsch. In order to understand these aspects, it was carried out a sociolinguist diagnostic comprising three investigation stages: 1) interviews with students from the city schools; 2) interviews with speakers of the German languages mentioned, intending to draw a relation network; and 3) observation of the circulation of those languages in the city as well as of the people, institutions, and events supporting them, that is, indicators of the vitality of those two German languages. Faced with the situations of substitution and loss of all minority languages spoken in São Bento do Sul, strategies aiming to revitalize and sustain the languages in the city are proposed.

Texte intégralThe complexity of the language configuration of several African countries deserves a freshlook at the phenomena of language contact and multilingualism because they introduce newdynamics suitable to be taken into account, to describe and study. Indeed, our researchfocuses on sociolinguistics and language teaching and it attempts to describe and explain alinguistic dynamism revealing a new form of identity in Angola. Communicative process thatthis study intends to highlight is characterized by a range of transgressions that we shallattempt to broach not really as distorted forms or disparity of a given standard language. Weview them as a (re) -appropriation of languages in contact into the communicative field andas an affirmation of a plural identity revealed by the representations of languages andsubconscious positions of Angolan speakers. The objective here is to identify the attitudes ofthe speakers, their sense of linguistic creativity and finally describe the variety of Frenchlanguage practiced in Angola, country with a large number of French speakers andmultilingual therein due to the unprecedented migrations forced by civil wars and colonialrepressions
A complexidade da configuração linguística de vários países da África merece um novo olharsobre os fenômenos de contato de línguas e do plurilinguismo, na medida em queintroduzem novas dinâmicas a serem levadas em conta para descrever e estudar. De fato,nossa pesquisa que gira em torno da sociolinguística e didática de línguas, tenta descrever eexplicar um dinamismo linguístico que revela as dinâmicas identitárias em Angola. Oprocesso comunicativo que este estudo pretende destacar, apresentam uma gama detransgressões que tentamos de abordar não como formas distorcidas ou desvios àdeterminada norma, mas como (re) -apropriação das línguas em contato na esferacomunicativa e como afirmação de uma identidade plural impressa pelas representações delínguas e posições epilinguísticas dos locutores angolanos. Visamos aqui, identificar asatitudes dos falantes, seu senso de criatividade linguística e finalmente descrever o francêspraticado em Angola, que por força das migrações sem precedentes impostas pelas guerrascivis e repressões coloniais, abarca um grande número de falantes de francês e plurilinguesno seu seio

Texte intégralThe research focuses on lexical influences exerted by Indian languages on British English as a result of linguistic contacts between Great Britain and India. Both diachronic and synchronic perspectives are taken into consideration in evaluating the extent of such lexical influences. The first part of the research analyses the presence of words of East Indian origin in English by means of the Oxford English Dictionary, on-line edition, be these words authentic lexical borrowings, or derivatives or compounds arisen as a consequence of such linguistic contacts. The historical period taken into consideration goes from the 16th century till nowadays. The second part of the research aims to verify the actual presence, frequency of usage and meaning of such words in contemporary British English by means of a linguistic corpora tool, namely the Bank of English by Harper Collins. The historical and cultural background of the relationships between Great Britain and India, as well as the theoretical background about linguistic interferences as a whole are also illustrated, with reference to the most authoritative and recent studies.

Texte intégralThe Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) student register records that today in Italy more than one out of ten students is not an Italian citizen, although the majority of them were born there. Several statistical surveys indicate that "foreign" students, when compared to native students, show a poorer performance in Italian and in academic achievement. This exploratory fieldwork carried out in schools in Turin (5th to 8th grade) analyzed data obtained through semi-structured interviews with 121 students and 26 parents as well as 141 questionnaires filled in by 27 teachers of Italian and family language. It showed that many students are "bilingual natives", as they grow up acquiring both Italian and another language; however, despite the fact that the interviewees rate polyglottism positively, schools don't usually offer targeted support in either language. Within the cohort the broadest range of competences in Italian are found first among those with an Italian-speaking parent, then among those who arrived in Italy at pre-school age attending kindergarten there; this latter group shows higher competences than those born in Italy attending nursery there, as also in the INVALSI tests. As far as family language is concerned, data illustrate that its teaching increases its competences without affecting those in Italian: quite the opposite in fact. These results confirm the remarkable role played by the "other" language in successful language education. MIUR is therefore called upon to include also linguistic data in its student register, so as to redefine its curricula according to EU Guidelines, and to identify specific procedures and resources for multilingual classes. This new policy would reduce the current cost of placing students in a lower grade, grade retention and drop-outs, and would promote school success, equal opportunities and multilingualism, with positive consequences both for the individuals and for the national economy.
L'anagrafe studenti del MIUR registra come oggi in Italia più di uno studente su dieci non è cittadino italiano, pur essendo la maggioranza di loro nata in questo paese. Numerose indagini statistiche mostrano come gli allievi "stranieri" presentino, rispetto a quelli italiani, ridotte competenze in italiano e minore successo scolastico. Questa ricerca esplorativa svolta in alcune scuole di Torino (V elementare-III media) ha analizzato dati ottenuti tramite interviste semi-strutturate a 121 studenti e 26 genitori e 141 questionari compilati da 27 insegnanti di italiano e di lingua di famiglia. Da essa è emerso che molti studenti sono "nativi bilingui", poiché crescono usando l'italiano e un'altra lingua. Questo poliglottismo, valutato dagli intervistati assai positivamente, non si rispecchia però nella prassi scolastica: un supporto mirato in italiano e l'insegnamento della lingua di famiglia sono di regola una chimera. All'interno del campione le più ampie competenze in italiano si trovano fra chi ha un genitore italofono e chi è arrivato in Italia in età prescolare frequentandovi la scuola materna; come constatato anche nei test INVALSI, chi è nato in Italia e vi ha frequentato l'asilo nido è leggermente svantaggiato. Rispetto alla lingua di famiglia risulta che il suo studio porta a migliori competenze in essa, senza nuocere all'italiano: anzi. Emerge quindi il ruolo significativo della lingua "altra" per un'educazione linguistica efficace. L'invito al MIUR è quindi di integrare la propria anagrafe con dati linguistici, così da ridefinire i propri curricula secondo le Linee Guida Comunitarie, individuando procedure e risorse specifiche per le classi multilingui. Con un investimento ridotto, paragonato con il costo attuale dato da retrocessioni, ripetenze e abbandono scolastico, si riuscirebbe a sostenere il successo scolastico, le pari opportunità e il plurilinguismo, con conseguenze positive per i singoli e per l'economia nazionale.
