Résumé :
Abstract In this three-part article I examine the relationship between sport and popular culture through the concept of affect. In particular, I am interested in the historiographical implications of this relationship. In the first part, I argue that social historians of sport typically consider sporting bodies as social constructions to the exclusion of (embodied) affective experiences that I place at the core of popular culture. In the second part, I discuss the recent affective turn in the social sciences and humanities and what this is beginning to mean, and could mean in the future, for historians of sport with a social bent. In the third part, I touch on ethics, an implicit theme in the social history of sport. Popular culture presents alternative contexts for examining ethics and, for the historian, raises additional issues around narrative representation. Throughout the article I draw on examples from surfing—a popular pastime, an established sport with professional world tours, and an affective experience.

Résumé :
ArgumentThe interwar period in France is characterized by intense activity to disseminate science in society through various media: magazines, conferences, book series, encyclopedias, radio, exhibitions, and museums. In this context, the scientific community developed significant attempts to disseminate science in close alliance with the State. This paper presents three ambitious projects conducted in the 1930s which targeted different audiences and engaged the social sciences along with the natural sciences. The first project was a multimedia enterprise aimed at bridging what would later be named “the two cultures” – natural sciences and humanities – rather than at popularizing scientific results in the society at large. The second project, an encyclopedia namedEncyclopédie françaiseedited by the French historian Lucien Febvre, was meant to shape a cultural view of science for the general public. The third project and the most successful enterprise was thePalais de la découvertedesigned by the physicist Jean Perrin and explicitly aimed at attracting the young public. This paper explores the paradoxes that resulted from these large enterprises. Despite their social ideals, the scientists-popularizers favored an elitist concept of popular science essentially aimed at integrating science into high culture. While they strove to overcome the increased specialization of sciences, their efforts nevertheless accelerated the professionalization of scientific research and the isolation of science in an ivory tower. In their attempts to get closer to the public, they eventually contributed to spreading the cliché of the increasing gap between the scientists and the public.

Résumé :
The article analyzes the formation and development of Urban History as a branch of historical science before and immediately after the era of the Urban Crisis of the 1950s and 1960s. The concept of the article suggests that urban history was formed in a constant dialogue with the social sciences. At the beginning, academic urban historians appeared in the 1930s as opponents of American “agrarian” and frontier histories. Drawing their ideas from the Chicago School of sociology, they reproduced the national history of civic local communities that expressed the achievements of Western civilization. However, in the context of the impending Urban Crisis, social sciences, together with urban historians, have declared the importance of generalizing social phenomena. A group of rebels soon formed among historians. They called their movement ‘New Urban History’ and advocated the return of historical context to urban studies, and were against social theory. However, in an effort to reconstruct history “from the bottom up” through a quantitative study of social mobility, new urban historians have lost the city as an important variable of their analysis. They had to abandon the popular name and recognize themselves as representatives of social history and interested in the problems of class, culture, consciousness, and conflicts. In this situation, some social scientists have tried to try on the elusive brand ‘New Urban History’, but their attempt also failed. As a result, only those who remained faithful to the national narrative or interdisciplinary approach remained urban historians, but continued to remain in the bosom of historical science, rushing around conventional urban sociology and its denial.

This research involves a qualitative descriptive method in which the researcher describes different situations, conditions, and variables. To collect relevant data, the research utilizes secondary data techniques and photo searches on social media. Flexing, which has become a new and popular culture among the public, has become a widely discussed issue across various social groups. Flexing content on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook is often posted with the intention of gaining recognition, honor, and social status, although the wealth displayed may not always come from personal asset ownership.

Résumé :
PurposeThis work examines assumptions of positivism and the traditional scientific method.Design/methodology/approachInsights from quantum mechanics are explored especially as they relate to method, measurement and what is knowable. An argument is made that how social scientists, particularly sociologists, understand the nature of “reality out there” and describe the social world may be challenged by quantum ideas. The benefits of utilized mixed methods, considering quantum insights, cannot be overstated.FindingsIt is the proposition of this work that insights from modern physics alter the understanding of the world “out there.” Wheeler suggested that the most profound implication from modern physics is that “there is no out there” (1982; see also Baggott, 1992). Grappling with how modern physics may alter understanding in the social sciences will be difficult; however, that does not mean the task should not be undertaken (see Goswami, 1993). A starting point for the social sciences may be relinquishing an old mechanistic science that depends on the establishment of an objective, empirically based, verifiable reality. Mechanistic science demands “one true reality – a clear-cut reality on which everyone can agree…. Mechanistic science is by definition reductionistic…it has had to try to reduce complexity to oversimplification and process to statis. This creates an illusionary world…that has little or nothing to do with the complexity of the process of the reality of creation as we know, experience, and participate in it” (Goswami, 1993, pp. 64, 66).Research limitations/implicationsMany physicists have popularized quantum ideas for others interested in contemplating the implications of modern physics. Because of the difficulty in conceiving of quantum ideas, the meaning of the quantum in popular culture is far removed from the parent discipline. Thus, the culture has been shaped by the rhetoric and ideas surrounding the basic quantum mathematical formulas. And, over time, as quantum ideas have come to be part of the popular culture, even the link to the popularized literature in physics is lost. Rather, quantum ideas may be viewed as cultural formations that take on a life of their own.Practical implicationsThe work allows a critique of positivist method and provides insight on how to frame qualitative methodology in a new way.Social implicationsThe work utilizes popularized ideas in quantum theory: the preeminent theory that describes all matter. Little work in sociology utilizes this perspective in understanding research methods.Originality/valueQuantum insights have rarely been explored in highlighting limitations in positivism. The current work aims to build on quantum insights and how these may help us better understand the social world around us.

Résumé :
The article discusses popular Stoicism (a modern, simplified, and often commercialized version of ancient Stoicism), which is offered as an answer to the uncertainty of modernity. The financial, political, climate, and health crises have been detrimental to the sense of agency and control over one’s life, leading individuals to seek ways of (subjectively) regaining it. Popular Stoicism can be viewed as an expert system providing individuals with a specific vision of happiness and the good life, in addition to offering practical knowledge on how to define an area of individual agency by negotiating the boundaries between that which is within one’s power and that which is not. Reflections begin with a juxtaposition of ancient and contemporary Stoicism, focusing on their different socio-cultural origins, followed by a synthesis of the principles of ancient Stoicism on happiness and the good life and a detailed interpretation of the ‘offering’ of popular Stoicism in the relevant areas. In the latter context, two chosen Stoic exercises (necessary to achieve happiness and the good life) are discussed—the ability to recognize what things depend/do not depend on us and Stoic emotion work. The practices and techniques recommended as a part of constant work on oneself are also supposed to teach individuals to adapt to their unstable reality. As a result, the popular version of Stoicism perpetuates the mechanisms of the culture of individualism, which holds the individual fully responsible for their life, and the therapeutic and counseling culture (based on one’s readiness to constantly self-improve), which is a new form of disciplining in a neoliberal society. Both are important elements of the everyday life and lifestyle of the middle class. This class is interested in self-fulfillment and is the primary target audience of contemporary Stoic handbooks. The consideration is based on fragments of books on popular Stoicism, mainly written by Polish philosophers, subjected to qualitative content analysis.

This paper explores the psychological concept of identity and how popular culture may be used as a theme in art therapy for exploring and repairing life story. The literature review defines identity from varying perspectives with emphasis on awareness of parallels between popular culture and the client’s personal story. These parallels may offer art therapists a framework of images and memories useful specifically to exploring identity development with clients. The case study places client’s identity into the context of popular culture unique to the experiences of the client at varying life stages.

Résumé :
This research synthesis investigates the effects that popular culture and new forms of mediation have had on the teaching and learning of English. Further, it examines some key aspects worth consideration when applying these types of texts in an educational context. The English syllabus for upper secondary school advises teachers to make use of the outside world for resources, and teach the students how to access, gather, analyze and use information found in different types of texts. After initial struggles, due to teachers’ reluctance, popular culture and modern media has found its way in to most classrooms and studies have shown different effects that the introduction of these texts have had on teaching and learning of English. Firstly, there has been a shift in how many teachers approach texts by letting students take more responsibility by participating in the selection process of different texts. Moreover, some studies have shown the effects popular culture and digital media have had on the acquisition of literacy skills. Study results suggest that primarily, students critical skills have developed, and that “out of school literacies” have helped students develop more traditional literacy skills such as reading and writing. However, this research synthesis concludes by saying that more research measuring the acquisition of traditional English using popular culture and digital media skills over longer periods of time involving more students would allow one to answer more accurately what effects they have had.

During the past few decades, anthropologists have become increasingly interested in how different cultural frameworks come together. One opportunity to view such interactions is presented by travel seminars based on a transformative education model, which aim to educate middle-class people about conditions in economically depressed areas through travel. The task of this thesis is to examine the experiences of U.S. participant groups in one transformative education program, paying particular attention to interpersonal contact, both within groups and between them and local people, and to how participants experience the location of poverty. I argue that multiple factors play a role in terms of whether, how, and why trip participants appear to form new meanings based on their experiences. These factors include the individual's ability to empathize with the 'Other' (i.e. local people) met on the trip and previous experience in and knowledge of economically depressed areas, especially the Third World.

Marchis, Mouren Laure.

Can a two-century old local tradition survive the globalization of leisure and recreation? When it comes to bull racing, studying the audience/spectators is important. Extensive bull-breeding, which is one of the main industries in Camargue, is not really profitable and cannot survive by breeding bulls for racing alone. The common assumption is that the spectators of Camargue bull races tend to be rather old rural folks. If this is really the case, the future of bull racing and the ecological balance of the territory depend on audience renewal of taurine culture. Little known outside Provence and Languedoc, taurine events remain quite popular in Camargue and surrounding areas. Why is the interest of locals for these so-called “traditions” so keen? As we started interviewing aficionados for this research we were able to outline a social field (Bourdieu, 1992) for Camargue bull racing. This thesis, pertaining to Information and Communication sciences, focuses on the field of Camargue bull racing. This field is fairly autonomous, yet relies on the social, economic and political context. It belongs to a universe of conflicting interests and power struggles between social actors. A quantitative survey compiled from 626 questionnaires provides a first outline of the audiences of Camargue bull racing. Several transmission mechanisms have been identified. Intergenerational transmission is complemented by an integration mechanism that transcends the field’s borders. Aficionados act as mediators for first-time spectators and the feeling of belonging to the “bouvine” community strengthens the field

AbstractCoworking spaces in Malta have grown in their presence and use only within the last decade, yet the COVID-19 pandemic may have altered the cultural working office norms of Maltese society. Indeed, this chapter, using in-depth interviews with different groups of people, that is, co-worker owners, employees, traditional employers and members of an employment association, aims to explore how the pandemic may be impacting the coworking industry in complex ways. From the narratives, it emerged that the soft lockdown measures related to the pandemic had caused immediate negative effects due to the fear of contagion on the use of coworking spaces in Malta and the limitations related to social distances in workspaces. However, the pandemic itself may have created a shift within the Maltese context where the idea of remote working is perceived as beneficial and may become more popular. The pandemic may have contributed to the revision of the Maltese employers’ priorities, such as the importance of owning or renting a permanent office space or giving permission to employees to work from home or renting a coworking space for socialisation at work. Therefore, the pandemic may have caused damaging short-term effects to the coworking industry in Malta yet possibly beneficial long-term effects.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter presents the issue of parenthood as a subject of sociological inquiry in the context of broader social and cultural changes. I demonstrate why parenthood should be perceived as a process that is strictly connected with social, cultural and institutional contexts. Keeping this in mind I argue that there is no one proper way of doing parenthood. The most important aspect here are the links between parenthood and paid work. I critically approach the concept of work/life balance that is vastly popular in contemporary social sciences, but in my opinion is not always adequate to describe parenting in a post-communist society. I propose to look at parenthood through the lenses of three types of work: care work, paid work and domestic work. I claim that such approach helps to grasp different ways of parenting in contemporary times, as well as to recognise persisting gender and economic inequalities.

Résumé :
Lebanon is blessed with a rich and diverse flora, and the distance varies between flowers and people in Lebanon. We find some varieties that still adorn the plains and valleys from afar, while others are of interest to the Lebanese and are planted in their gardens either for treatment and food or for aesthetic purposes. Cultural anthropology has been interested in studying the relationship between humans and plants through a special cognitive discipline called ethnobotany. Through this discipline, we can study flowers in society, where special relationships arose between humans and flowers. They adopted them in social life, gave them various symbolic meanings, and exchanged them on various occasions, used them in economy, incorporated them in popular culture, and this gave the flowers a role and function in society. Humans consider flowers to have their language, where each flower has a specific symbol. The red rose is associated with love and the yellow with jealousy, and so on… Symbols are used to link active social elements together, through various means of communication that they put at their disposal. We can say that flowers are one of the means of communication that connect people. A group of people are interested in flowers and knowing their symbolic meanings more than other groups in society. Cultural openness has led to a new distribution of flowers, where their use has varied from the past, the types of flowers used have changed, and the shape of the bouquet has also changed, all in line with the requirements of the era. This research paper aims to demonstrate the meanings, symbols, and effects of flowers in society, how their types change between different occasions and generations, and show the differences between types of flowers among social classes, where the terms as

Résumé :
Some cities are frequently important venues for various spectacles, live performances, concerts and residency shows performed by the greatest artists of the world, therefore they contribute to the music tourism development and to the local economic development of the cities themselves through tourism and cultural events. A plenty of cities remain emblematic in this regard, but research on their cultural events are peripheral in the present geographical analysis. This paper discusses about an emblematic residency show of a legendary music icon held in Las Vegas as a major input both in the cultural background of the city as well as in its musical history. The research is based on quantitative and qualitative methods with statistical research, media and discourse analysis. The findings of the paper unveil that concerts, live performances, residency-shows and spectacles of the greatest artists of the world are important features of the cultural backgrounds of the cities that are visible in their cultural landscapes. Furthermore, they provide a large power of attraction of tourists and popular music consumers from the world over marking the cities cultural background. These aspects largely under-studied from the geographical perspective call for further research and debates in the contexts of geography, music, music tourism and the cultural background of the cities.

The systemic transformation has significantly increased and diversified the music press market. Liquidation of the monopoly, privatization, censorship abolition and media pluralism are just some of the factors that contributed to shaping new cultural policy in Poland. The research material used for this paper’s analytical purposes consists of Polish music magazines; based on a query covering over 110 journals being published since 1946 to the present, a historical and comparative analysis was made. It allowed to determine what new solutions the publishers started to put into practice to make their magazines more attractive. Moreover, it showed a clear fragmentation of the market. After ’89, popular music magazines began to prevail; there are also many specialist journals devoted to a specific topic. A look at cultural transformation from the perspective of the music press is therefore an innovative idea, combining knowledge from the borderline of musicology, cultural studies, and press studies.

Résumé :
As a popular way of information dissemination, short video brings new opportunities for the spread of traditional culture. Li Ziqi's short video shows the traditional and quaint life of China people, constructs a poetic and pastoral mirror image, alleviates the public's anxiety about modernity by emotionally stimulating nostalgia, and constructs a traditional cultural community. Although the continuous development of emerging technologies and new media has brought technological advantages and development opportunities for the export of China's excellent traditional culture, it has also brought new challenges and dilemmas. Therefore, we must intensify our efforts to explore the cross-cultural communication path of China's excellent culture and enhance the international influence of China's traditional culture. Li Ziqi's short video conforms to the change of this communication context, conforms to the development trend of diversification of communication subjects, and realizes the multi-level combined communication of traditional culture. This paper chooses "Li Ziqi", a representative short video case of food, as the research object, and tries to explore the traditional cultural communication path under the background of cross-cultural communication from the content and channels.

Résumé :
In recent years, under the strategic background of national cultural soft power construction, the domestic animation industry has shown a rapid development trend. The output of China’s image in domestic animation is not only an important channel to tell the story of China, but also a showcase of Chinese culture going abroad. Guided by Ecotranslatology, this study uses the principle of three-dimensional transformation to explore how to show cultural self-confidence and achieve communicative purposes in the translation of animated subtitles, taking Yao-Chinese Folktales, a popular domestic animated series in 2023, as an example. It is found that translators often choose appropriate translation strategies, methods and techniques to achieve translation effects in linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions, promoting full communication between the source culture and the target culture. The purpose of this study is to provide reference for the subtitle translation of domestic animation and make contribution to the enhancement of international influence of Chinese animation and Chinese traditional culture.

Résumé :
We are the School of Life Sciences Public Engagement team. This team encompasses the Schools Outreach Organiser and Public Engagement and Communications Officer as well as the WCAIR Public Engagement Manager and Public Engagement Officer and the Academic Lead. We provide support for the staff and students within the School of Life Sciences in engaging with the public, including training, resource development, administrative support, and specialist expertise. We have staff and student development, and social purpose at the heart of all that we do. In 2017 we defined four main aims as part of our new Public Engagement with Research Strategy: → Build on our creative partnerships to deliver a high-quality, innovative engagement programme. This will inspire participation in and understanding of our research, making science relevant for everyone. → Engage a diverse range of people with our research. → Consult with our local communities to widen our reach and meet their needs. → Promote and support a culture of active participation in public engagement within our life sciences community. In 2018, we worked with Evaluation Support Scotland to set up our evaluation framework. Some of the evaluation outcomes, and their associated indicators, were set to evidence the good work we were already doing. Some were set to drive us to improve our practice. Over the past five years, we have used the framework to monitor our work. Each annual reflection gave us confidence in some areas but also pushed us to re-examine some of our long-standing practices and assumptions and refine the framework to meet changing needs. Here we showcase how we used the evaluation framework to guide our work and in doing so, provide a flavour of the public engagement activities the School of Life Sciences undertakes. We demonstrate how we knew if we were being successful, where we had more work to do, and where we were unrealistic with our expectations.

Résumé :
The article reveals and analyses a wide range of terms for the Holodomor of the 1920s and 1930s in Ukraine. The main objectives of the study are to find out the peculiarities of the linguistic presentation of the Holodomor phenomenon in scientific, popular science, and journalistic discourses, and to reveal semantic differences in the use of various terms for the Holodomor used in different languages. The main methodological bases of the study are linguistic analysis, socio-cultural method, qualitative content analysis, comparative method, etc. The method of retrospection must be used to substantiate the hypothesis. Thus, the reasons for the formation of the semantic contours of the terms “Holodomor”, “Famine”, “Great Famine”, “Terror by Famine”, “Big Hunger”, etc. were clarified. At the same time, the semantic nuances of word use are identified. As a conclusion, the authors substantiate the fundamental importance of using the term “Holodomor-genocide” in scientific circulation as the one that most accurately represents the essence of the historical phenomenon of the Holodomor. Based on the analysis of the documents, the content of the term “genocide” is formulated. It is explained that the Holodomor is genocide of the Ukrainian people, just as the Holocaust is genocide of the Jewish people. The authors prove the anti-Ukrainian orientation of the consistent and deliberate policy of Stalin and his followers against the Ukrainian nation, which culminated in the murder by starvation. These research findings are significant not only for the development of Ukrainian terminology or international terminology. They are also of great importance for modern politics, political science and historiography, and jurisprudence, especially in the context of a new genocide – the Russian Federation’s full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine. Keywords: Holodomor; genocide; Ukraine; Stalin’s terror; terminology.

Yaremchuk, Olesya. TRAVEL ANTHROPOLOGY IN JOURNALISM : HISTORY AND PRACTICAL METHODS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, février 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11069.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Our study’s main object is travel anthropology, the branch of science that studies the history and nature of man, socio-cultural space, social relations, and structures by gathering information during short and long journeys. The publication aims to research the theoretical foundations and genesis of travel anthropology, outline its fundamental principles, and highlight interaction with related sciences. The article’s defining objectives are the analysis of the synthesis of fundamental research approaches in travel anthropology and their implementation in journalism. When we analyze what methods are used by modern authors, also called «cultural observers», we can return to the localization strategy, namely the centering of the culture around a particular place, village, or another spatial object. It is about the participants-observers and how the workplace is limited in space and time and the broader concept of fieldwork. Some disciplinary practices are confused with today’s complex, interactive cultural conjunctures, leading us to think of a laboratory of controlled observations. Indeed, disciplinary approaches have changed since Malinowski’s time. Based on the experience of fieldwork of Svitlana Aleksievich, Katarzyna Kwiatkowska-Moskalewicz, or Malgorzata Reimer, we can conclude that in modern journalism, where the tools of travel anthropology are used, the practical methods of complexity, reflexivity, principles of openness, and semiotics are decisive. Their authors implement both for stable localization and for a prevailing transition.
