Résumé :
Activists contesting urban neoliberalism are traveling to participate in struggles beyond their place of residence. They are sharing, teaching and advising activists from other struggles. They are also promoters of specific imaginaries and strategies of contestation. I refer to this phenomenon as translocal urban activism, a type of brokerage that aims to draw global connections among local political movements and a global activist network. By the analysis of the translocal practices against gentrification of the Spanish art collective Left Hand Rotation in Latin America, I direct the discussion to identify the mechanisms whereby translocal urban activism shapes the geography of urban movements against gentrification, and to examine how translocal urban activism contributes to the reproduction of and resistance against neoliberal ideas, values, and practices. I argue that power geometries within translocal urban activists, tend to nurture the global activist network with dominant imaginaries and practices, eclipsing other alternatives.

Résumé :
The children of immigrants are often entrusted with the task of interpreting linguistic and cultural information between their native communities and their Anglo American communities, a process called language brokering. Much of the research indicates that the responsibilities of the task positively affect the social and cognitive development of brokers. The present quantitative study examined the social and academic self-efficacy of brokers as they relate to brokering frequency, the ways in which single and dual parent structures affect the bond between the broker and the parent(s), and the ways in which the parent-child bond affects the social and academic self-efficacy of the brokers. There were slight correlation in the results but not a lot of significance.

Lim, Liza L. « From social activists to development brokers : the transformation of Philippine non-government organizations into development intermediaries ». Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/3030.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Since the 1986 People Power Revolution, the Philippine civil society groups, particularly the NGOs, had been considered as one of the most active in the world in terms of promoting democratization. Although it has only been recognized recently, the Philippine civil society has been in existence as early as the 16th century. Moreover, it is not only comprised of the middle class-based NGOs, but also the people's organizations whose roles in the democratization process were crucial, yet underplayed. Of late, however, the NGOs are more recognized as representatives of the Philippine civil society because of the critical roles they play as development intermediaries. As such, they broker influence and resources between the organized grassroots and the formal social institutions such as the state, the Catholic Church and the ideological parties. Because of this, they allowed some fractions of the Filipino middle class to get mainstreamed in the field of development administration and enabled them to strategically position themselves to countervail the influence of the elites on the state. This paper examines how the Philippine social development NGOs emerged and over time, evolved into development intermediaries. It identifies the development within the Catholic Church, the changes in the ideological parties, the socioeconomic situations at particular historical junctures and the responses of the state towards organized efforts of the citizenry as major factors that shaped the Philippine civil society's transformation. It likewise described how such macro-processes compelled a particular NGO, the Institute of Social Order, to undertake professionalization and transform itself into a development intermediary organization over time.

Résumé :
Taking the theme of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), this study was developed in the Brazilian segment of the insurance brokerage that represents significant role in the economy. In the theoretical framework, the Ethos Indicators (ETHOS, 2007) are used as a parameter. Similarly, field research was conducted in four insurance brokers listed in the Ethos Institute of Business and Social Responsibility, based in 2007. The objective of this research is to investigate the stage of development of indicators related to the themes Values, Transparency and Governance and Internal Public, which are part of the list of seven topics of the questionnaire of the Ethos Institute. The cut made reflects the relevance of these themes and their subthemes for the field in focus. This is a descriptive-exploratory research, conducted through a survey. As for the results, it appears that although there is some concern to deepen the practice of CSR, they are, in general, still in early stages, requiring, therefore, a commitment of companies towards more effective actions. Of the two issues addressed, there is concentration of actions in the Internal Public, through conduct targeted in relations with officials, as seen in indicators related to the subtheme decent work. Despite the complexity of the activity and the ethical underpinning to it, because it relies on a relationship of trust, the insurance brokers show reluctance in terms of socially responsible practices, which indicates a lack of awareness of the importance of this theme in their field of expertise. Because of the broad horizon that represents the subject in the dynamic economy, future studies may contribute to the further deepening of the subject in the activity of insurance brokerage, encouraging other companies to join the CSR movement, enabling a new social reality to arise in the segment.

Barzotto, Mariachiara <1983&gt. « Individual’s agency in workplace social networks : face-to-face communication behaviours ». Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/3977.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The thesis focuses on the actions undertaken by individuals to activate the organisational structures in which they are embedded. The present study upholds the need to investigate individual’s behaviours within organisations for a deeper understanding of organisational processes micro-foundations. The dissertation blends social network analysis and case study methods, with a private incubator and its 10 start-ups as a research setting. RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentification) badges were used to capture the ways through which employees mobilise the resources at their disposal within the organisation. The use of RFID technology has enabled the monitoring, with high-resolution, of the effort in terms of face-to-face interaction undertaken by a 91-subject network. Essay I deals with individual ambidexterity showing the presence of 3 individual ambidexterity orientations and their possible combinations at the organisational level. Essay II focuses on the relational styles used by brokers (compared to non-brokers) to activate workplace social networks, both instrumental and affective ones. Findings show that brokers differently engage with their informal workplace social networks depending on the content of the relationship (instrumental vs. affective) in which s/he is embedded. Finally, Essay III analyses the use of “fleeting” face-to-face interactions among employees and the determinants of this communication behaviour, important in activating organisational resources. Results suggest that social, organisational and spatial determinants impact on the frequency of this kind of interactions. More specifically, the presence of organisational similarity seems to play a key role in activating short encounters among colleagues linked by social similarity as well as by the sharing of a working space with specific characteristics of proximity and visibility.

Résumé :
The following work was developed in the concentration area of “History, Culture and Power” in the research line “Integration, Politics and Frontier” of the masters course of the Post Graduated Program in History from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), with support from CAPES scholarship. The goal is to enquire about forms of power’s social construction and apropriation of resources from the elites in an open frontier region in the end of the XVIII century and in the begin of XIX centuty. The study was elaborated from the trajectory analysis of a potentate located in Rio Grande de São Pedro, José de Abreu - Barão do Serro Largo. In this sense, we had thought about his role as a mediator, that adjusted to the local reality, was able to establish relations with the large and multi-ethnic population that inhabited the frontier, being one of the links connecting the region to the Portuguese administrative network. It was possible to perceive, therefore, that Abreu's social ascencion had been allowed by the opening of the frontier after the conquest of the Missions in 1801. The conquered territory opened spaces for the insertion of new elites, who took field’s possession and organized spaces of command in new frontier. Abreu constructed his military store from a series of factors, among which stood out the alliance with the indigenous local population (guaranis from the Missions and groups of charruas). Besides to the relationship with the groups of military and militiamen officers who went to that region, receiving land that was distributed by José de Abreu, in exchange, mainly, by the military services. It was also possible to verify, in the same way, that these groups were very integrated. Abreu also managed to establish close ties to the Court, which made possible his appointment to the position of Governor of Arms, and his projection to a command space within the province.

Brokerage is one of the most popular and well-studied concepts in the literature on social networks. It has so far been analysed, however, without taking negative ties in so-called signed networks into account. The central role of tension for brokerage motivates an integration with the hitherto not explicitly related social balance theory. Despite brokers benefitting from serving as intermediaries, in many networks, gaps remain open. We hypothesise that these gaps in some contexts are filled with conflictual relationships. Implementing balance theory, we argue that brokers face higher imbalance as they positively connect adversarial groups. This would create a trade-off between brokerage benefits and stress from unbalanced relationships. We additionally propose a novel theory on unbalanced four-cycles in which a strong desire for balance prohibits the evolution of positive ties between groups and stabilises brokerage. To answer the research questions, we used cross-sectional data from eight Hungarian work departments of sizes 16 to 43 on the relationships between colleagues. We applied descriptive statistics, non-parametric tests and linear regressions to test the hypotheses regarding the connection between brokerage and balance and their relevance for different benefits. Creating null models of the observed networks, we tested the prevalence of the specific four-cycles against the predicted number by random chance and correlated it with brokerage scores. As the last step, we created agent-based models simulating organisations with 25 agents to predict the impact of balance and brokerage mechanisms on the network evolution in connection with negative ties. Results show that brokers tend to have a higher share of negative ties in their neighbourhood but no higher imbalance. Despite heterogeneity in the networks and low statistical power, some support for the importance of balance for a broker concerning job satisfaction is found. For half of the networks, a significantly higher number of unbalanced four-cycles is observed which are predominantly connected to brokers. The simulation results show that more negative ties hamper average balance but do not foster brokerage properties. A higher motivation to obtain balance limits brokerage and vice versa. Overall, to create similar networks to the ones observed, a considerably high preference for balance must be integrated. In sum, more conflict in a network does not directly increase brokerage opportunities. Brokerage and balance both benefit actors and are not to be seen as contrary but complementary concepts. Thus, in workplaces, conflict does not need to be harmful if room exists to form balanced relationships. Central is the constellation of positive and negativeties that require the consideration of network structures at different levels.

Torres, Ospina Sara. « Uncovering the Role of Community Health Worker/Lay Health Worker Programs in Addressing Health Equity for Immigrant and Refugee Women in Canada : An Instrumental and Embedded Qualitative Case Study ». Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23753.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
“Why do immigrants and refugees need community health workers/lay health workers (CHWs) if Canada already has a universal health care system?” Abundant evidence demonstrates that despite the universality of our health care system marginalized populations, including immigrants and refugees, experience barriers to accessing the health system. Evidence on the role of CHWs facilitating access is both lacking and urgently needed. This dissertation contributes to this evidence by providing a thick description and thorough analytical exploration of a CHW model, in Edmonton, Canada. Specifically, I examine the activities of the Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative (MCHB Co-op) and its Multicultural Health Brokers from 1992 to 2011 as well as the relationship they have with Alberta Health Services (AHS) Edmonton Zone Public Health. The research for this study is based on an instrumental and embedded qualitative case study design. The case is the MCHB Co-op, an independently-run multicultural health worker co-operative, which contracts with health and social services providers in Edmonton to offer linguistically- and culturally-appropriate services to marginalized immigrant and refugee women and their families. The two embedded mini-cases are two programs of the MCHB Co-op: Perinatal Outreach and Health for Two, which are the raison d’être for a sustained partnership between the MCHB Co-op and AHS. The phenomenon under study is the Multicultural Health Brokers’ practice. I triangulate multiple methods (research strategies and data sources), including 46 days of participant and direct observation, 44 in-depth interviews (with Multicultural Health Brokers, mentors, women using the programs, health professionals and outsiders who knew of the work of the MCHB Co-op and Multicultural Health Brokers), and document review and analysis of policy documents, yearly reports, training manuals, educational materials as well as quantitative analysis of the Health Brokers’ 3,442 client caseload database. In addition, data include my field notes of both descriptive and analytical reflections taken throughout the onsite research. I also triangulate various theoretical frameworks to explore how historically specific social structures, economic relationships, and ideological assumptions serve to create and reinforce the conditions that give rise to the need for CHWs, and the factors that aid or hinder their ability to facilitate marginalized populations’ access to health and social services. Findings reveal that Multicultural Health Brokers facilitate access to health and social services as well as foster community capacity building in order to address settlement, adaptation, and integration of immigrant and refugee women and their families into Canadian society. Findings also demonstrate that the Multicultural Health Broker model is an example of collaboration between community-based organizations and local systems in targeting health equity for marginalized populations; in particular, in perinatal health and violence against women. A major problem these workers face is they provide important services as part of Canada’s health human resources workforce, but their contributions are often not recognized as such. The triangulation of methods and theory provides empirical and theoretical understanding of the Multicultural Health Brokers’ contribution to immigrant and refugee women and their families’ feminist urban citizenship.

Résumé :
Bars, Chains, and Broken Things is a four-movement work for orchestra with a distinct social narrative: the American prison system. During my time working as a volunteer with the Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility, I came to know several young men and their stories. This piece serves as a loosely programmatic work chronicling the four most significant concepts which resonated with me. The individual movements are named and seek to musically represent these ideas: “Abandonment” - a common feeling among the incarcerated, “Imprisonment” - the effects and words of those feeling isolated, “Solace” - a state of calm acceptance, and “False Freedom” - a refutation of the belief that release from the prison system signifies the end of society’s punishment. It is my hope that this work serves as a musical contribution to awareness of the current issues faced in the American prison system.

Katzarova, Elitza. « The World Is Broken : The Social Construction of a Global Corruption Problem ». Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2015. https://hdl.handle.net/11572/367983.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines the social construction of a global corruption problem by introducing a methodological framework from the field of sociology and adapting it to International Relations (IR). It provides an alternative explanation for the adoption of anti-corruption instruments in the period 1994-1997 and the international institutionalization of anti-corruption reforms. It challenges conventional views that point to the rise of non-state actors, such as Transparency International, and the end of the Cold War. By tracing the trajectory of the corruption problem, it shows that the dynamics of the 1990s can only be fully understood within the legacy of the 1970s and, in particular, the failed talks at the United Nations. The institutionalization of the global corruption problem in the 1990s was a product largely of historical contingency and state intentionality. While it appeared that a new issue has taken international organizations by storm, it was largely key state agents that were creating this change by building coalitions and maneuvering between venues. The thesis employs methods of discourse and practice analysis from sociological research for the empirical study of claims. The analysis makes use of archival data to open up the pre-negotiation talks on illicit/corrupt payments at the OECD and the UN and study the process of claims-making, as well as document discursive strategies such as controversy management and feasibility. By taking a step back from the study of norms to look at the social construction of problems, the thesis introduces new methodological tools into constructivist IR. It also provides for the integration of state agency in constructivist approaches by showing how state actors engage in ontological warfare over the definition and institutionalization of new problems. Studying the social construction of problems through the process of claims-making elucidates the power relations that inform the established definitions and the spectrum of legitimate solutions; it helps us better understand the makings of international reality.

Fagan, Jesse. « HOW ORGANIZATIONAL TURBULENCE SHAPES THE BROKER VISION ADVANTAGE ». UKnowledge, 2017. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/management_etds/10.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Research on social networks has established that those who bridge the gaps between dense social groups (i.e. structural holes) are granted a “vision advantage” compared to those who are embedded in dense groups. A common explanation for the advantage is that bridging a structural hole provides the broker with access to diverse information. What is less clear is how this process performs when the organizational context is turbulent. I propose that in a turbulent organizational context, when the organization is experiencing dramatic changes, employees benefit less from building a repertoire of diverse information and instead benefit more from adopting socially distant information. Information discussed by members of the organization which are several steps away from an employee would be more valuable in a turbulent context. Socially distant information would be more rare as people become rigid in response to threat, and it would be more relevant as local information becomes obsolete. To explore this idea, I study the case of two large organizations undergoing a merger integration. The members of the higher-status, acquiring organization experience relative stability compared to members of the target firm, who experience a great deal more uncertainty. The higher-status firm dominated the merger, the top management of the target firm was replaced, supervisory structures are changed, employees are forced to develop new routines, learn new technologies, and had to uproot their social support networks and move across the country. This case provides an opportunity to examine how two information flow mechanisms, which mediate the relationship between broker positions and individual career benefits, are altered in the presence of organizational turbulence. I measure information variance and the adoption of socially distant information of 612 organizational members by fitting a topic model on a dataset of email content covering a 14-month period immediately following the merger of two large consumer product firms. I test my hypotheses using a latent difference score model to test the impacts of increases in information variance, constraint, and adoption of socially distant information on increases in employee salary. I find that organizational turbulence alters the ways in which information flows provides benefits. Within turbulent contexts the pathways between access to diverse information and improved career outcomes are destroyed. Instead adopting socially distant information and information associated with power and status provides more benefits to the individual than incrementally improving a repertoire of diverse information. This study contributes to research on M&As, organizational change, and social network theory by expanding our understanding of the impact of organizational turbulence on the information mechanisms driving advantage in open networks.

Résumé :
This qualitative inquiry explores and describes the Refugees Welcome movement in Sweden from 2015 to 2020 by exploring how people became volunteers, their motivation and experience while at the same time describing events, sceneries, and context with the help of their stories. The empirical material consists of 25 interviews with 20 interviewees, the theoretical perspectives come from the fields of volunteering, civil society, and social movements. A thematic analysis is the method used and the results are presented as part 1 Refugees Welcome to Malmö during the refugee crisis in the fall of 2015, and part 2 with the post-2015 Refugees Welcome initiatives separated by the establishment of checkpoints. The volunteers paint a picture of civil society handling an international issue in a globalized world, and what happens when that globalized world closes. The conclusion is that when the states of Europe introduced checkpoints it drastically changed the context of the opportunities to help refugees, cutting off networks of solidarity from the Mediterranean Sea to Malmö Central Station, and when the local authorities took over the responsibility for the refugee reception they cut off civil society and killing the engagement of the volunteers.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
"In Silence My Tongue is Broken": The Social Construction of Women's Rhetoric Before 1750 examines the rhetorical strategies that Sappho (c. 600 B.C.E.), Christine de Pizan (1364-1430?), Lady Elizabeth Cary (1585-1639), and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) used to speak for the female experience. These women became autonomous subjects of discourse by adapting the language of the dominant Western tradition to speak from the position of women. In appropriating the masculine language that defined them, they were able to construct personal identities that could respond to and renegotiate male-defined reality to articulate female experiences and reconstruct feminine identities. The silencing of women's voices usually accompanied the strengthening of patriarchy through institutionalized misogyny and the domestication of women during periods of bourgeois ascendancy, which affected the latter two women more than the former. The introduction explains the epistemological reasons why social constructionism is the critical lens for this analysis. The four discussion chapters treat the rhetorical context in which each woman wrote, including a discussion of Aristotelian misogyny; the ways each woman justified her authorial voice to express peculiarly female experience; and the rhetorical choices each made at the register, genre, and discourse levels, which reveal their degree of authorial confidence. The conclusion illustrates how these authors spoke from the margins of male experience by becoming culturally multilingual.

Hardin, Gerald L. « Environmental Determinism : Broken Paradigm or Viable Perspective ? » Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2009. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1839.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The research was to examine the issue of environmental determinism. It was an ideology that was prevalent throughout the early decades of the 20th century that held that the natural environment was responsible for virtually all human development. It helped bring the study of geography into the venue of postsecondary education, where it was viewed as a tool for study of human activities. It was a new science inspired by Darwinism that viewed human adaptation to the natural environment as critical to socialization. Relying on historical sources, the purpose of the study was to reveal how environmental determinism became a controversial extension of an ancient belief system. It played a role in religious thought, philosophy, and the rise of the social sciences. It likely dates back to the Neolithic epoch in which cultures explained the mysteries of the natural world in terms of fearsome anthropomorphisized elements. Today, the gods and goddesses have fallen by the wayside, while environmental determinism has not. Eventually, the ideology lost its major supporter and then became a topic of disapproval. However, it was never entirely disproven, but it did fall from grace. And, it is a belief that has persisted for centuries. It was central to Calvinism and some versions of Protestantism that were relocated to North America where it took root. In view of the evidence, it is proposed that environmental determinism be reopened for reassessment and debate. It is manifest that future generations be apprised of the potential problems that it may inspire. To paraphrase Ellen Churchill Semple, the study of humans without consideration of the earth, would be like studying cactus without consideration of the desert.

Jingryd, Ola. « Impartial Contract-Engineering in Real Estate Transactions : The Swedish Broker and the Latin Notary ». Licentiate thesis, Malmö högskola, Institutionen för Urbana Studier (US), 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-7443.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Even in the days of an ever closer European union, Europe contains no less than four different legal cultures with respect to real estate conveyances: the Latin-German notary system, the deregulated Dutch notary system, the lawyer/solicitor system, and the Scandinavian licensed real estate broker system. The latter is of particular interest in that Scandinavian brokers play a far larger role in real estate transactions than their European counterparts. This paper examines and compares the Swedish real estate broker and the Latin notary. The Swedish broker is required by law to act as an impartial intermediary, to provide counseling to both parties, and to assist in drawing up all contracts and other documents necessary for the transaction at hand. To that end, the broker must be active and observant of the particular needs of the parties to the present transaction, always striving to enable them to reach equitable and practical agreements so as to prevent future disputes. In other words, the broker is required to tailor the transaction to fit the needs of the buyer and seller. The Latin notary profession prevails in large parts of the world, particularly the Latin-German parts of continental Europe, and Latin America. While there are divergences in the notarial laws of all countries, the similarities are greater still, and it is correct to speak of a single profession throughout all these countries. The notary carries out several important functions, the nexus of which is the authentication of legal documents. In the preparation of these documents, the notary is required to provide impartial counseling in order to tailor the transaction at hand to fit the will and needs of the parties. To uphold the integra fama of the profession, and to safeguard the proper performance of the notarial functions, lawgivers in all countries emphasize the importance of impartiality and integrity. There are national divergences as to the specific rules of conduct related to impartiality, particularly those concerning what activities are considered incompatible with the notariat, but they rest on common principles. Most importantly, not only must the publica fides be honored, it must be seen in the eyes of the public to be honored. The organization and regulation of the notary profession raises important economic issues, particularly with regard to competition/monopoly and market failures. The discussion of the regulation or deregulation of the notariat is by no means settled. Comparing the two professions, it is striking to see the enormous similarities in the legal frameworks and their respective rationales. Two common features are of particular interest. Firstly, both the Swedish broker and the Latin notary are required to assist the contracting parties in the contract phase, drawing up any necessary documents and counseling the parties as to the implications of the transaction. In that respect, both professions function as tailors to the transaction. Secondly, both the broker and the notary are required to act impartially and independently – impartially visavi the contracting parties, and independently in order to preserve the public faith in the independence and integrity of the professions. The similarities can be summarized as a function on the real estate market: impartial counseling and contract-engineering. This function exists alongside other functions, such as the brokers’ traditional matchmaking, or the registration of property rights. This functional approach may prove very useful in all kinds of analyses of the real estate market, whether of political, legal, or economic nature. For instance, with respect to the merits and/or necessity of the Swedish impartiality rule, those wishing to amend the law and introduce a system of overtly partial brokers acting solely on behalf of their principal have to face the question of what is to become of counseling for the principal’s counterpart. Should the counterpart be forced to choose between hiring their own legal counsel or make do without? Further, those wishing to contest the mandatory notarial intervention in real estate transactions have to face the same question: what is to happen to impartial counseling, given not only to the client but also to the client’s counterpart? Both instances illustrate the common feature shared by the two examined professions: impartial contract-engineering and counseling. To complete the picture and cover the whole arena of real estate transactions, the next logical step is therefore to compare and analyze different systems for registration of property rights. Doing so will hopefully achieve a tool for examining the real estate market that will prove useful indeed, particularly in future discussions concerning European harmonization.

Résumé :

The disconnect between what evidence-based research indicates is best care for the seriously ill patient and what is delivered is significant. Local communities are charged with addressing the impact of this breakdown in care for their residents. In a system initially designed to cure, medical care is focused now on slowing the progression of complex, chronic illnesses in an aging population. The opportunities for a breakdown in care are significant. This participant action research study explored factors contributing to the breakdown of care for the seriously ill in an isolated, medically under-served County in Northwestern U.S. The combined action research and appreciative inquiry approach in this study focused on what were the actionable interventions community stakeholders considered taking in supporting improvement in the care of the County’s population. Purposeful sampling of community providers identified 14 physicians, registered nurses and clinical social workers, who participated in semi-structured interviews. Data was analyzed through the theoretical lenses of general systems, complexity, and working whole systems theories. Issues related to trust, turf, and respect emerged as stakeholders minimized the role and effectiveness of others, and overemphasized both the capacity and burden of their agency or profession’s ability and responsibility to address the problem. Professional training and position in the medical hierarchy were linked to the perceptions of stakeholders across all work settings and need to be acknowledged in future collaborations across disciplines. County specific recommendations are included along with recommendations for additional research.

Klasson, Caroline.

Stockholm's brokerage world is characterized by fierce competition. This has forced brokerages to focus on the creation of a strong and unique brand. At the same time, the industry is becoming more diversified by the fact that many smaller niche agencies are entering the market. This study investigates how some of these agencies work in order to reach the public with their brands. Emphasis is placed on their digital strategies as well as their work on social media and is compared to some extent with the work of other brokers. There are four main themes of the thesis: the first theme attends to the creation of brands and its importance to brokerage agencies. Thereafter the discrepancy between identity and image, and the work to reduce it is discussed. These two themes are thereafter connected to expectations upon, and benefits from, digital strategies for brand communication. Lastly is  companies and brokerage agencies communication strategies on social media analyzed. The main conclusion of this thesis is that digital strategies require resources, knowledge and energy during the initial phase, and should, in addition to this, be continuously updated. The work which is put in to design the digital strategies will pay off for the brand as well as for the home-owners, whose homes are published on the accounts of the different brokerage agencies.

Maconi, Melinda Leigh. « "I'm Not Broken" : Perspectives of Students with Disabilities on Identity-making and Social Inclusion on a College Campus ». Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6113.

Résumé :
Narratives help individuals to make sense of their lives and their everyday worlds. Within these narratives, individuals make sense of identities. Historically, people with disabilities have been depicted as helpless victims of their own bodies. However, during the twentieth century, disability rights social movements constructed a counter-narrative, stating that society’s reactions to different bodies was the real source of disability. While this was a positive status change for people with disabilities, it did not do enough to shed the status as victim. Yet many students with disabilities do not see themselves as victims. Therefore, I used narrative analysis to answer the question: “How do university students with disabilities make sense of their identities as adults with agency through narratives?” Furthermore, these narratives are not created in a vacuum. Many stories of identity-making surrounded narratives of being included or excluded from various social situations, leading to my second research question: To what extent have students with disabilities felt included/excluded in aspects of university life including clubs, organizations, sporting events, and other social aspects of the university in which other students participate? I am focusing on people with disabilities who seek accommodations, as they are acknowledging that they need help, which goes against the narrative of rugged individualism found in the United States of America. However, my research found that university students who seek accommodations do not construct themselves as victims. On the contrary, many students receiving accommodations construct narratives in which they are more hard working and more moral than other students.

The essay is about how the broker affects the distribution of responsibilities for factual faults in properties between a buyer and a seller. Which faults the buyer will be responsible for according to 4:19 JB is based on what the buyer could have discovered in a normal investigation duty. This duty of inquiry may also be extended if the buyer receives a warning message pointing to that a fault may exist. The extension of what the buyer is responsible of may also be reduced if the buyer receives a calming message or the specific attribute is being trivialized or if a specific attribute is being pledged. By contrast, the seller’s liability of faults is reduced or increased. The seller is liable for faults, which he fraudulently refuses to exploit due to the byer’s lack of knowledge. The broker has a duty to provide information according to 16 § FML and shall disclose any faults he is aware of or suspects. It is independent whether the information has been disclosed to the broker from another person or if the broker himself knows about it through previous experiences. The broker must also act in order for the seller to provide information that may be of importance to the buyer. This can be done through a list of questions. Based on the compilation of constitutions, practices and doctrine, it has been found that the broker can, through his obligations, affect the distribution of responsibilities. The broker can affect the distribution of responsibilities in both directions for a buyer and a seller, i.e. that it leads to a shift of responsibilities for actual faults in the property. The broker affects the responsibility through his duty of disclosure. The buyer can also get a reduced duty to investigate due to a calming message from the broker. By contrast, it implies reduced or increased liability for the seller. This means that the broker’s statement to a buyer has the same meaning as the seller’s statement regarding the division of responsibility between the buyer and seller.

Title: Ledarskap det sociala stödets påverkan av arbetsrelaterad stress – En studie inom fastighetsmäklarbranschen (Leadership social support influence of work stress – A study of real estate broker)   Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration   Author: Nathalie Holm och My Gustafsson   Supervisor: Pär Vilhelmson, Maria Fregidou-Malama och Kristina Mickelsson   Date: 2015 – may   Aim: Society and specifically the sales profession is becoming increasingly more complex and has contributed to increased work-related stress. The study's purpose is to get a better understanding of leadership and the importance of social support to combat work-related stress in the selling organizations. The research questions raised are as follows:   1)    How important is leadership for the experience of work-related stress? 2)    What is the importance of social support for the experience of work-related stress? 3)    Considered to be the leader's task is to contribute/give social support to its employees?   Method: Since the aim was to increase understanding of the subject, the study has been done with a qualitative research in which data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Ten interviews were conducted, divided into six employees and four leaders. The empirical material is then transcribed and analyzed. The result is presented through an analysis with supporting quotations and finally has an ending written in which results and analysis are presented and research questions are answered.   Result & Conclusions: Leadership and above all the transformal leadership has been shown to have an influencing role in work-related stress as the leader focuses on engaging and motivating employees with the help of a close relationship and social support. The study also shows that the transactional leadership style may have an influencing role of work-related stress in a positive sense.   Suggestions for future research: Since we interviewed both managers and employees in our study, we believe it is of interest to only focus on employees or leaders to get a coherent picture out perspectives. The study also shows a slight link between social support and transactional leadership style, therefore it would also be interesting to see the transactional leadership impact and importance of perceived work stress.   Contribution of the thesis: The study contributes to the business economic research in leadership and organization through a greater understanding of leadership, the transformal leadership, and above all the social support influence of work-related stress within the sales profession. The study also shows that the transactional leadership can have a positive impact of work-related stress   Key words: Leadership, transformational leadership, transactional leadership, social support, work stress, real estate broker.

Résumé :
This dissertation examines the relationship between social structural factors and violent crime rates in Turkey. The relationship between social structural characteristics and violent crime is worth exploring in areas that have attracted little academic attention, such as violent crime in Turkey. In order to understand and prevent the occurrence of crime, researchers have long investigated possible factors related to crime. Examining how crime varies across different regions can help us to understand underlying reasons for violent crime, which is considered one of the enduring problems in society. The findings of this research, to some extent, support the assumptions of social disorganization theory regarding the distribution of violent crime. Both the findings of multivariate and bivariate analysis indicated that poverty, unemployment, and family disruptions may have a positive effect on the distribution of violent crime in the cities of Turkey. The analysis of the effects of the social structure variables through the mediating variables, such as religious institutions, libraries and voluntary associations on the number of violent crimes and violent criminals, to some extent, support the tenets of social disorganization theory. However, all mediating variables cannot mediate all the indirect effects of social structural covariates. In brief, none of their indirect impacts on the social structural variables on the outcome variable was significant via mediating variables.

The main objective of this paper is to understand which factors influence on the commitment of insurance brokers and insurance companies and, more specifically: a) measuring and comparing the commitment indicators of the employees from insurance brokers and insurance companies in three dimensions (affective, instrumental and normative); b) analyzing which factors that most influence each dimension of the commitment in the insurance industry; c) comparing the differences and similarities of the factors which influence the commitment to insurance companies and insurance brokers. The target audience is made up by professionals from the insurance market working for insurance brokers and insurance companies. The research was performed in two parts: quantitative and qualitative. The data for the quantitative research was collected through multidimensional model scale of affective, instrumental and normative commitment (Meyer & Allen, 1991), applied to 188 participants. The data of the average comparison analysis based on the T-Student test technique did not show statistically significant difference. The second part, the qualitative research, involved 11 interviews with employees from the industry in order to identify the reasons why the employees develop the commitment with each of the two types of the insurance market organizations. The research data obtained were analysed by using a content analysis technique and resulted in the model of background of insurance industry organizational commitment. It was found that the background of the affective commitment in insurance brokers is formed by the organizational climate, by the perception of justice and by the Human Resources policies and that the Human Resources policies predict the instrumental behaviour. In the insurance companies, it was found the affective commitment background are the organizational climate, the perception of support and the Human Resources policies and that the Human Resources policies predict the instrumental and normative commitment. These results contribute significantly for the management of people in the Brazilian insurance industry.

The main purpose of this study was to examine how coping styles, spirituality, and social support contributed to divorced persons’ adjustment to life after divorce. The study used a qualitative research design with face‑to‑face interviews. A snowball sample was used in order to inquire divorced participants’ experiences after divorce. Twelve participants were interviewed to obtain their individual experiences and discernment of divorce transition. The study found that spirituality (e.g., attending church, Bible reading, prayers) was a major copying strategy used by most of the participants after divorce. The study also revealed that the support of family and friends was utilized as another critical coping strategy to help aid divorcees in their transition to post divorce life. In addition, the findings of the study suggested that divorced participants, particularly females, were quite resilient in overcoming financial hardship, single parenting, loneliness, and abandonment. This study’s results suggest that social workers need to be more knowledgeable about and equipped to provide adequate support and therapy to divorced persons’ post‑divorcé adjustment challenges. Another practice recommendation is that social workers should play a critical role in developing and facilitating a support group to help divorcees that are transitioning post‑divorce. In addition, special attention should be paid to provide additional help and support services for men who suffer mental and emotional effects of divorce transition.

Pennington-Twist, Tara Elspeth Leanne. « "Then one day I broke down" : the experience of depression and social anxiety in adolescents with first-episode psychosis ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6304.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Introduction: Young people recovering from first episode psychosis experience a high degree of emotional distress and co-morbidity. Depression and social anxiety are highly prevalent following first episode psychosis and have been associated with poorer outcome, increased risk of suicide and lower quality of life. However, there is little research examining how these emotional difficulties relate to the course of psychotic symptoms and subsequent adaptation and recovery. The primary aim of this research was to establish a grounded theory of the experience of mood and anxiety related difficulties in young people who experience a first episode psychosis. Secondly, the research aimed to establish the underlying psychological factors contributing to the relationship between psychosis and affective dysfunction. Method: The study used a mixed-methods design with primacy given to the qualitative component (QUAL+quan). Young people (n=10) who had experienced a first-episode of psychosis were interviewed and completed measures of depression, social anxiety and recovery. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using a social constructivist version of grounded theory. Quantitative measures were integrated with the qualitative data, providing a framework for re-examining inferences made in the qualitative analysis. Results: The overarching theme to emerge was the experience of a developmental trajectory of psychosis. Seven key categories were identified: The build up; coping; breaking point; facing diagnosis; impact of illness; getting stuck and; moving on. Isolation, low mood and anxiety were universal outcomes and appeared to be mediated by maladaptive forms of coping and mood regulation in addition to psychological appraisals and negative illnessrelated experiences. Conclusions: The findings suggest that depression and social anxiety are not co-morbid features of psychosis but are intrinsically linked to the underlying processes involved in coping with and adapting to psychosis. Strengths and limitations of the research are discussed and implications for clinical practice and further research are reviewed.

Résumé :
The changes that affected Iranian women's lives after the coming of Islam in the seventh century were similar to the changes that occurred in their lives after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. In both cases these changes were largely wrought by men.
Iranian women have been actively involved and have participated fully in diverse religious, political, and social contexts since the eighteenth century, but frequently without due acknowledgment. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the belief that education was a pillar of freedom began to gain popularity among Iranian women. The efforts of women to secure an equal place with men in the nation's educational institutions received support from a number of women writers and poets in the form of protests and petitions. It was through this process that Iranian women learned the importance of education in freeing them from patriarchal bondage. The twentieth century, however, witnessed the destruction of most of Iranian women's hopes and quests. Different Iranian governments enacted a series of important laws and regulations touching on "women's issues." Most of the time, however, these governments failed to consider the voices, positions and demands of women concerning these "issues."
In the last two decades, under the Islamic Republic, male authority figures continue to determine women's rights, identity, education, employment, and so on. Changes which affected the status of Iranian women came in the form of different religious decrees and laws that were justified by the argument that they all complied with the Quran and the hadiths.
Iranian women have refused to abandon their quests for an improved or even equal status. Among these women, there are those who still believe that equality can be achieved under the Islamic Republic. Women such as Rahnavard and Gorgi are relying on a "dynamic jurisprudence" that would lead to "Islamic justice." There are also other women who argue that in order to bring about true social justice, women's oppression and subordination in any form must be eliminated. They find such injustice ingrained in the existing culture. Women such as Kaar and Ebadi are making women and those in power aware of the need to achieve a "civil society," based on "social justice" through the process of "revealing the law." This group is hoping that a gradual cultural revolution brought about by women will lead to the establishment of "such justice."

Résumé :
Abstract 1: A multi-level assessment of disproportionate population sex ratios and high-risk sexual behaviors among STD clinic patients Low male-to-female sex ratios in a population may influence high-risk sexual behaviors, such as multiple sex partners and inconsistent condom use, which facilitate the transmission of STDs. This study used multi-level modeling to assess whether population sex ratios were associated with these two individual-level behaviors. All analyses were stratified by gender. Interview data were collected from patients (N = 9,203, 48% male) attending participating STD clinics. Interviews included information on socio-demographics and sexual behavior, including number of sex partners in the previous 3 months and condom use at last sex. The sex ratio per census tract was obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau. There was no association between sex ratio and multiple sex partners or condom use for either men or women. That is, we found no evidence that a shortage of men in census tracts was associated with increased engagement in high-risk sexual behavior.   Abstract 2: A multi-level assessment of neighborhood vacancy rates and high-risk sexual behaviors among STD clinic patients The “broken windows” theory posits that physical neighborhood deterioration, and its association with reduced social cohesion, can lead to changes in individual behaviors. Thus individuals living in neighborhoods with high levels of deterioration may be more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors. This study used multi-level modeling to evaluate the extent to which high residential vacancy rates increased the likelihood of individuals having multiple sex partners. Interview data, including data on patient demographics and sexual behaviors, were collected from patients (N = 6,347, 52% male) attending participating STD clinics in the Richmond, Virginia area from 2008-2010. Neighborhood vacancy rates were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau. Fifty-one percent of men and 36% of women reported having 2 or more sex partners in the previous 3 months. Men who lived in census tracts with high vacancy rates were slightly more likely to report multiple sex partners (53.9%) compared to men who lived in low vacancy tracts (49.7%). In multi-level models, there was no association between high vacancy rates and having multiple sex partners among either women (OR = 0.98; 95% CI: 0.79, 1.20) or men (1.18; 95% CI: 0.99, 1.42). That is, we found no evidence that increased neighborhood deterioration, as measured by high residential vacancy rates, was associated with increased risk of having multiple sex partners among STD clinic patients.   Abstract 3: Residential segregation and gonorrhea rates in U.S. metropolitan statistical areas The residential segregation of black populations, often in areas of high economic disadvantage and low social status, may play a crucial role in the observed racial inequities in STD rates. An ecological analysis of 2005-2009 average gonorrhea rates was performed across 277 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The black isolation index and Gini index of income inequality were used as proxy measures for racial and economic residential segregation respectively, derived from 2005-2009 U.S. Census estimates. We used logistic regression modeling to produce estimates of odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between a high black isolation index and Gini index, both independently and in combination, on gonorrhea rates in MSAs. Effect measure modification was assessed by calculating the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) between the two indices. Compared to MSAs with low levels of racial segregation, MSAs with high levels of racial segregation had increased odds of high gonorrhea rates (adjusted OR 5.54; 95% CI: 2.29-13.44). Adjustment for potential confounders did not noticeably impact the relationship between the Gini index and gonorrhea, with higher levels of income inequality predicting higher gonorrhea rates (adjusted OR = 2.47; 95% CI: 1.21-5.03). In combined models, the influence of racial residential segregation on gonorrhea rates was stronger than that of income inequality-based segregation; there was no evidence of additivity or a multiplicative interaction. Residential segregation by race or income equality may be a key component in the perpetuation of high rates of gonorrhea and other STDs among black populations in the U.S.

The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth area analysis of Södervärn's focal point, with the intention of mapping the local problem image of the area. The purpose of the study is also to create a better understanding of why the focal point is perceived as a place with problems related to disorder, crime and insecurity. In the long run, this understanding is expected to lead to better targeted measures, and hopefully fewer problems and reduced insecurity. This study has been conducted with a combined method of structured and semistructured interviews. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to complement the structured interviews and provide a deeper understanding of the local problem picture. The sample consisted of 104 respondents, of which 100 in the structured and four in the semistructured interviews. The result shows that the disorder that the travelers in our study mainly perceive as a major problem at Södervärn's focal point is careless traffic followed by litters, drunken people who disturb the scheme, damage and dumbbells. The factors that influence the perception of Södervärn's focal point are rumors about the area, the ongoing drug trafficking, whether in the day or night, the "shady people" moving in the area, as well as aesthetically what the area looks like. The main measure that respondents primarily believe can increase their safety experience when moving at the focal point is the visibility of the police.

Résumé :
Four years after the signing of the Final Agreement for the Termination of the Armed Conflict in Colombia, the promises made to achieve a stable and lasting peace have by no means materialized at the expected pace. The implementation of the Agreements has focused on the demobilization of the FARC-EP while structural transformations to reduce the causes for the existence or prolongation of the conflict have been neglected. While the political and economic elites make efforts to halt the implementation –especially the compromises dealing with the rural reform– those who promote such structural changes have been stigmatized and violated in an effort to maintain the status quo. As a result, Colombia has the highest number of killings of social leaders in Latin America. The leaders mobilizing peasant causes have suffered with particular intensity from this violence.  This thesis thus uses a qualitative method of study, developed through data collection, to analyze the relationship between the elite resistance to the implementation of the Comprehensive Rural Reform and the assassinations of social leaders in Colombia. The conceptual basis for the research is the theory of structural violence.

The thesis investigates conversations involving native speakers and non-nativespeakers of English. The non-native speakers partaking in the study have a welldeveloped knowledge of the foreign language. The study is particularly concernedwith the function and interactional relevance of repair strategies that interlocutorsemploy when they talk to each other. The results of the analyses highlight issuessuch as participants’ self-representations as competent speakers, the notion “nonnativeness”,and language learning, relating to current developments within conversationanalytic research on second/foreign language conversations. Comparisonsbetween non-native and native speakers are made, highlighting similarities as wellas di¡erences in participants’ use of repair strategies. The study adopts a conversation analytic framework but is also in¤uenced bystudies of second/foreign language acquisition. Conversation analytic research has, until recently, dealt with conversations involving non-native speakers who have alimited or intermediate command of the second/foreign language. Repair behavioursof advanced foreign language users are thus a little investigated area. Whereasnon-native speakers with limited experience in using the second/foreign languageoften employ repair in order to solve problems that are related to their linguisticknowledge, such as ¢nding or knowing words and constructing utterances that areunderstandable in the context in which they occur, this thesis shows how an increasedknowledge of the foreign language involves a shift in focus as repair is carriedout, i.e. repair is used to address problems of a linguistic as well as of a socialnature. Since an increased knowledge of a foreign language is accompanied by an increasein the range of jobs that repair strategies do, “doing repair” is an importantpart of the development of non-native speakers’ interactional and linguistic competence.

In 2005 a public housing company in Uppsala, Sweden introduced the service quarter host. The focus on comfort (life quality in American programmes) is similar to the non-tolerance programmes. The idea of non-tolerance derived from the theory of Broken windows. The purpose is to examine how the service works according to the theories of Broken windows and social control. The aim is also to examine if the manifest and the latent functions are the same in different areas. Hosts from four different areas have been interviewed in a comparative case study. The result tells that the hosts practice according to the Broken windows model when they prevent damage to, or around the buildings by checking them. And to the non-tolerance when they are taking care of minor problems, defined by them. The manifest functions of the service are the same in all four areas. The latent functions are different related to the host’s apprehension of the people in the areas. How the manifest services are carried out influences the latent function. Social control cannot be excluded as a latent function. The resemblances with the more social administration in Gothenburg points out public housing in the direction of being social housing.

Résumé :
Relevance has become one of the key priorities for accounting policy, and implies that accounting should have an impact on the economic decision-making of accounting users. Despite the increased importance given to users, however, little is known concerning the properties of such relevance in practice. Furthermore, the lack of insight into the practices of users has been mitigated with a theoretical perspective of decision-making which supports an insufficient understanding of how stock markets function and how accounting users behave. This dissertation contributes to the emerging interest in the sociology of financial analysis by following users in their pursuit of relevance. By theorising financial analysis as a social and institutional practice, this dissertation investigates not only how accounting is relevant but also how such relevance is influenced by the particular setting of accounting users. Furthermore, the understanding of relevance as located within the activities leading up to a decision is here extended by emphasising the continuous activities of users and therefore also the role of accounting in the management of their decisions. Based on in-depth field studies targeting the activities of (sell-side) equity research analysts and equity sales brokers, this dissertation presents four papers addressing different notions of accounting, users and relevance. Theoretical insights are drawn from sociology and include actor-network theory, dramaturgy and text-and-conversation-theory. The studies find that the organisation of the sell-side industry necessitates a use of accounting which accentuates the links between accounting, users and investments recommendations. This dissertation concludes that, in order to produce and sustain such links, relevance becomes (a) mediated by a variety of elements, (b) based on the production of differences, and (c) mutually constitutive for accounting and users.

Résumé :
With accelerating urbanization it is crucial to understand how urban ecosystems play a part in generating ecosystem services for urban dwellers, such as clean water, spaces for recreation, stress relief and improved air quality. An equally important question relate to who gets to enjoy these benefits, i.e. the distribution of ecosystem services, and how issues of power and equity influence the management of ecosystems. Through case studies from the urban landscape of Stockholm, this doctoral thesis engages with these perspectives through combining ecological theory with social theory, including social network analysis, actor-network theory and social movement theory. Strategies for how to improve urban ecosystem management are presented along with frameworks for how to analyze issues of power and equity in relation to natural resource management. Paper I shows that ecosystem management can be studied through analyzing the structure of social networks, i.e. the patterns of relations between agencies, stake-holders and user groups. Paper II and Paper III analyze, based on a network survey of 62 civil society organizations and in-depth interviews, a transformational process of how an urban local movement managed to protect a large urban green area from exploitation (The Stockholm National Urban Park). Paper IV discusses, based on several case studies from Stockholm, a conducive network structure for linking managers and user groups (e.g. allotment gardens, cemetery managers, and urban planners) across spatial ecological scales so as to improve urban green area management. Paper V presents a framework to analyze the social-ecological dynamics behind the generation and distribution of ecosystem services in urban landscapes. The thesis points towards the notion of "a social production of ecosystem services" and argues for deeper engagement with urban political ecology and critical geography to inform governance and collective action in relation to urban ecosystems.

Steinmetz, Alexandra Corcoran Meyers. « 'It Should've Never Been Broke Out' : Understanding Participation in the Conservation Reserve Program in Southwest Kansas and Southeast Colorado ». Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/83878.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) plays a vital role in restoring grasslands by removing highly erodible land from production; however, landscape-scale conservation success depends on participation. Fluctuating trends in participation suggest a need to better understand landowners' motivations for enrolling. Since participation hinges on agricultural producers' perceptions of programs, there is utility in understanding programs through their lens to ensure program design accounts for their needs. To understand what drives enrollment, I conducted immersive ethnographic fieldwork in farming and ranching communities of southwest Kansas and southeast Colorado. Through interviews and participant observation, I examined producers' reasons for participating, program perceptions, and the degree to which CRP fits with their lived experiences. I also explored challenges faced by field staff of the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in working within the program structure. I used open coding to identify common themes and quotes to capture producers' and field staff's points of view. I identified several frames through which producers think about CRP and themes related to how CRP fit well or poorly with producers' and field staff's lives. Frames characterized producer perceptions of CRP as a financial savior, a way to maintain financial solvency, and to gain leverage for their operation. Additionally, CRP was framed as a retirement fund and a conservation program that provides a solution for erodible land. Lived experiences related to wind erosion and the Dust Bowl, perceived community impacts of CRP, and the cultural and economic history of the region, also influenced how producers make sense of and 'frame' the program. Guaranteed payments to maintain cover incentivize participation, especially for land which some producers believe should have never been farmed, or 'broke out', in the first place. Even so, the economic and cultural aspiration to farm may prompt program avoidance or re-cultivation of prior CRP land. In identifying program fit, many felt the program serves a noble purpose but is complicated by rules which lack 'common sense'. While producers valued the program's role in soil stabilization and increased wildlife habitat, CRP requirements during the grass establishment phase and mid-contract management do not always align with producer and field staff visions. Mixed opinions existed around suitable grass species and management practices such as disking, interseeding, and grazing. A dominant theme emerged from producers, echoed by field staff, in the benefits of grazing and need for CRP to increase flexibility to maximize grazing compatibility. Broader program concerns included a shifting program focus, inconsistent enforcement of rules, and one-size-fits-all management. Personal relationships between FSA, NRCS, and producers were generally regarded as positive, and staff members value their role in working with producers to harmonize program requirements with producer needs, within the bounds of the program. Juggling various programs with limited time and other procedural issues leave many field staff feeling overwhelmed and understaffed. Field staff expressed a desire for greater one-on-one time with producers to better communicate program requirements or amend management plans. Both producers and field staff felt CRP could be enhanced to achieve a greater conservation benefit, alleviate staff burdens, and improve overall satisfaction if program rules had both greater flexibility and regional tailoring to correlate with the variable climate and local conditions. In exploring CRP 'frames' and 'fit', this case study provides a window into the interplay of producers' lived experiences in the shadow of the Dust Bowl, and a ubiquitous conservation program's impact on the way land is used.

It has long been stated in the literature the effects of collaboration to innovation, especially regarding research and development (R&D) activities. However, these are dynamic empirical fields. Therefore theoretical approaches face constant challenges to understand and explain the new evidences. Due to the limited scope and scale of organizations to search and identify partners with complementary knowledge and resources, and to select those with potential to effectively cooperate for R&D, there is an increasing emergence of agents who provide these services in the market. Called intermediaries or brokers, they influence the interaction among organizations with the common goal of innovation. Still, the literature has reported that the intermediary may play an important set of functions for R&D projects not limited to the search of partners. This thesis is therefore mainly concerned with the influence of innovation intermediaries in the context of collaborative R&D projects, suggesting a conceptual framework on the role of intermediaries. The framework emphasises that R&D collaboration goes beyond dyadic relationships usually highlighted in the literature. The roles of intermediaries provide an important additional dimension in collaborative R&D projects. The empirical part of the thesis explored three case studies: Force for Elastomers, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil; the Orange Service Call and Reward project undertaken by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) for Orange; and the StarStream project from the University of Southampton, both in the United Kingdom. The results confirmed the influence of innovation intermediaries in most of the critical elements of a R&D project. The study advances the understanding of the influence of intermediaries for the beginning of a new project between partners. The analyses also show that intermediaries influence especially through the search for possible partners and the management of the relationship. However, the activities of research and knowledge production as well as activities of development and prototyping were not directly influenced by intermediaries. The stage after R&D, when the partners had reached positive results from activities, received a major influence from intermediaries who helped the firms to protect the inventions and to value and commercialize the new technology. Research outcomes still reveal that there is still a lack of measurements about intermediaries’ effectiveness and therefore firms involved in partnerships cannot fully evaluate their role.

Marais, Bennie. « Jesus en die buitestaanders in Johannes 4 ». Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61390.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Summary This study deals with Jesus and the outsiders in John 4, with particular focus on John 4:1-42. Methodologically, the study focuses on social identity theory, and asks the question of how Jesus gets the Samaritan woman, who is a member of the outside group, into the insider group. The focus of the study is thus what the behaviour and attitude of the historical and non-conventional Jesus, in the strongly hierarchical social structure of his day, was toward outsiders. John 4:1-42 is often used in works that focus on missional tendencies in the church. This research attempts to place the missionary responsibility of the church on the table in a new light, resulting from the research results. Firstly, the inter-relational connection between identity, ethos and ethics with regard to Jesus’ attitude toward the outsiders in John 4:1-42 is researched. Secondly, the interpretation history of John is described, whereafter the social-scientific approach and the way in which social identity theory can be applied to John 4:1-42, is described. The purpose of the study is to suggest a new missional approach for the church, based on the research results of the study. In John 4:1-42 Jesus did not only repair the relationship between Him as a Jew and the Samaritan woman, but also the broken relationship between the Samaritans and the Jews - two previously conflicting ethnic groups who are now born into the new family of God (John 1:12). In the narrative, the Samaritan woman becomes a μαρτυρούσης (John 4:39). The result of the Samaritan woman’s testimony (John 4:39) becomes a personal testimony that eventually convinces the others of Jesus’ true identity (John 4:39). The woman’s testimony provided the initial impetus for them to come to Jesus, but now they have heard for themselves and have drawn their own conclusion. Many had believed in Jesus on account of the Samaritan woman’s testimony. Many more believed on account of Jesus’ word. Jesus’ harvest among the Samaritans therefore signals the return of a part of the unbelieving world to God as a first sign of the universal scope of Jesus’ saving mission.

Abstract: The present thesis incorporates the concept that the electrification process, while a technical and economic process, has also an important social and politic aspecto The text begins with an overview of the electric power industry and with the mechanisms of its recent transformation in the Brazil through the privatization period, and informs the methods adopted in the research on the political and social problems associated with this process. Subsequently, two retrospectives are made: the first one relapses on the State of Goiás singular history, jutting out the construction of the modem cities of Goiânia, the new capital of the state (in the 1930's), and Brasília, the capital of the Republic (in the 1950's). In detach, also the creation of the new state of Tocantins in 1988 and the recomposing of the regional politic scene after military regime unti1 the present days. The second retrospect reconstitutes the process of implantation of the power plants, the transmission lines and the electricity distribution in Goiás and in the Federal District throughout the 20th century. In this process, detaches the pioneer e1ectricity enterprises creation, the action of the foreign groups LIGHT and AMFORP and the intervention of state and federal govems through CELG an CEB creation, as well as FURNAS, CEMIG, ELETROBRÁS and ELETRONORTE. The retrospect attains the recent deregulation process of the energy industry business, looking over to introduce the discussions about the outbidding of the settled electric patrimony and the new hydroelectric projects to be settled. The results from the field research, the consultation realized in the State and Federal Public Ministry, the periodic visits to libraries and the participation in congresses and seminaries are presented in three chapters. In conjoint, the investigation focuses the composition and the capitalist's interests' conflicts for the new hydroelectric projects recently outbid by ANEEL. In a first moment, hydroelectric projects in the Araguaia, Claro, Verde and São Marcos rivers are analysed. Subsequently, it's studied the installation process of the Corumbá IV hydroelectric project in the Corumbá River. At last, an analytical focus relapses over national and intemational powerful economic groups, which presently dispute the energy market and patrimony in Goiás. In this analysis, it's revealed problems in the ambient and social passives in the settled works of Cachoeira Dourada, Serra da Mesa and Cana Brava works. This work is conc1uded affirming that the mercantilization process of the electric public services didn't benefit most of the population, but made them a victim. The continuity of this logic rapidly provokes the nature resources exhaustion and the exploitation of the work power, as well as the land expropriation of the rural small owners

Title: Real Estate Agent as a profession - A study about the occupation´s professional categorization Level: Bachelor's thesis within Real Estate Science  Author: Jesper Arnshed Supervisor: Karin Staffansson Pauli Date: May 2021 Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the real estate industry's view on the categorization of the broker´s profession, and what it takes for a higher categorization to be reached. Method: This study has applied a qualitative research methodology. With the help of semi-structured interviews, additional dimensions have supplemented the theoretical background, about the underlying aspects that are derived from the real estate agent's professional classification. Result & Conclusions: The result shows that the brokers´ aim towards a higher profession is partly prevented due to the gap between theory and practice. The new law change which i.a. intends to create conditions for a higher professional categorization, is predicted to have conflicting effects as it is not considered rooted in the real challenges and causes that affect the trust in brokers. Contribution of the thesis: The study contributed with additional understanding to the broker´s profession and what prevents a higher categorization. Suggestions for future research: As the changes in the law are implemented, it would be interesting to study what changes have had an impact in the industry and for the broker.

During the last four decades of the 1900’s, the churches in Sweden faced major changes, both from a national and a local perspective. Two movements within Christianity played a major role in this development: the ecumenical movement and the charismatic movement. The encounters between the established churches and, in particular, the charismatic renewal movement was, however, not always friction-free. At times, they were quite belligerent. As a result, many relations between people and organisations were damaged, during the 80’s and 90’s. In addition to personal and collective grief, this implied a significant drain of resources. The aim of this study is to examine, from an ecclesiological perspective, what happens in the encounter between a renewal movement and churches in a local ecumenical context, and to highlight under what conditions these meetings lead to unity and division, respectively. The actors of interest to this study are (1) the renewal movement with its upholders, (2) the churches, with its ministers, and (3) leaders at district and national levels. The aim is to find patterns in their behaviour, as well as the consequences of these for the encounters between the renewal movement and the established churches in the area. The participants' ability to engage in active reconciliation appears to be an important factor, determining the direction of the correlation between renewal movements in relation to division and unity. A part of the aim is therefore also to examine the conditions and the occurrence of reconciliation processes, as well as the methodology used. The study is made from a local ecumenical perspective on the meeting between the renewal movement and the church. More specifically, the ecumenical development in Uddevalla, during its meeting with the charismatic renewal movement the years 1975-2000, is examined.
