Résumé :
The design of a single-mode interband cascade laser (ICL) using a slotted waveguide is presented. This technique was explored as an inexpensive alternative to distributed feedback lasers since standard photolithography can be used in fabrication and complex techniques, such as e-beam lithography, re-growth steps, and/or metal gratings, can be avoided. The design of slotted waveguides must be carefully simulated before fabrication to ensure the efficacy of the photolithography masks with each ICL growth. Limitations and the behavior of key design parameters are discussed. Single-mode emission was achieved for certain temperature and injected current conditions, validating the operation of an Sb based slotted laser. The slotted ICLs were emitting from a single longitudinal mode at 3.5 μm and 2 mW of power per facet output at 20 °C with threshold currents around 80 mA.

Résumé :
The mutual and injection locking characteristics of two integrated lasers are compared, both on and off-chip. In this study, two integrated single facet slotted Fabry–Pérot lasers are utilised to develop the measurement technique used to examine the different operational regimes arising from optically locking a semiconductor diode laser. The technique employed used an optical spectrum analyser (OSA), an electrical spectrum analyser (ESA) and a high speed oscilloscope (HSO). The wavelengths of the lasers are measured on the OSA and the selected optical mode for locking is identified. The region of injection locking and various other regions of dynamical behaviour between the lasers are observed on the ESA. The time trace information of the system is obtained from the HSO and performing the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) of the time traces returns the power spectra. Using these tools, the similarities and differences between off-chip injection locking with an isolator, and on-chip mutual locking are examined.

Résumé :
We propose a novel semiconductor laser structure. It is composed of three cascaded active sections: a Fabry-Pérot laser section sandwiched between two gain-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) laser sections. We have modeled this multi-section structure. The simulation results show that compared with index- and gain-coupled DFB lasers, a significant reduction in the longitudinal spatial-hole burning can be obtained with the proposed device, and that this leads to a stable single longitudinal mode operation at relatively high optical power with a SMSR exceeding 56dB. Résumé :
Optical injection locking has been demonstrated as an effective filter for optical communications. These optical filters have advantages over conventional passive filters, as they can be used on active material, allowing them to be monolithically integrated onto an optical circuit. We present an experimental and theoretical study of the optical suppression in injection locked Fabry–Pérot and slotted Fabry–Pérot lasers. We consider both single frequency and optical comb injection. Our model is then used to demonstrate that improving the Q factor of devices increases the suppression obtained when injecting optical combs. We show that increasing the Q factor while fixing the device pump rate relative to threshold causes the locking range of these demultiplexers to asymptotically approach a constant value.

Résumé :
Light can exert radiation pressure on any object it encounters, and the resulting optical force can be used to manipulate particles at the micro- or nanoscale. In this work, we present a detailed comparison through numerical simulations of the optical forces that can be exerted on polystyrene spheres of the same diameter. The spheres are placed within the confined fields of three optical resonances supported by all-dielectric nanostructure arrays, including toroidal dipole (TD), anapoles, and quasi-bound states in continuum (quasi-BIC) resonances. By elaborately designing the geometry of a slotted-disk array, three different resonances can be supported, which are verified by the multipole decomposition analysis of the scattering power spectrum. Our numerical results show that the quasi-BIC resonance can produce a larger optical gradient force, which is about three orders of magnitude higher than those generated from the other two resonances. The large contrast in the optical forces generated with these resonances is attributed to a higher electromagnetic field enhancement provided by the quasi-BIC. These results suggest that the quasi-BIC resonance is preferred when one employs all-dielectric nanostructure arrays for the trapping and manipulation of nanoparticles by optical forces. It is important to use low-power lasers to achieve efficient trapping and avoid any harmful heating effects.

Résumé :
Misfit at the abutment-prosthetic cylinder interface can cause loss of preload, leading to loosening or fracture of gold and titanium screws. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of screw type, alloy, and cylinder position on marginal fit of implant frameworks before and after laser welding. METHODS: After Estheticone-like abutments were screwed to the implants, thirty plastic prosthetic cylinders were mounted and waxed-up to fifteen cylindrical bars. Each specimen had three interconnected prosthetic components. Five specimens were one-piece cast in titanium and five in cobalt-chromium alloy. On each specimen, tests were conducted with hexagonal titanium and slotted gold screws separately, performing a total of thirty tested screws. Measurements at the interfaces were performed using an optical microscope with 5mm accuracy. After sectioning, specimens were laser welded and new measurements were obtained. Data were submitted to a four-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons test (alpha=0.05). RESULTS: Slotted and hexagonal screws did not present significant differences regarding to the fit of cylinders cast in titanium, either in one-piece casting framework or after laser welding. When slotted and hexagonal screws were tested on the cobalt-chromium specimens, statistically significant differences were found for the one-piece casting condition, with the slotted screws presenting better fit (24.13µm) than the hexagonal screws (27.93 µm). Besides, no statistically significant differences were found after laser welding. CONCLUSIONS: 1) The use of different metal alloys do exert influence on the marginal fit, 2) The slotted and hexagonal screws play the exclusive role of fixing the prosthesis, and did not improve the fit of cylinders, and 3) cylinder position did not affect marginal fit values.

Résumé :
A spacer grid assembly, which is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps welded at the intersections to form an egg crate structure, is one of the core structural components of the nuclear fuel assemblies of a Pressurized light Water Reactor (PWR). The spacer grid assembly is structurally required to have enough buckling strength under lateral loads so that the nuclear fuel rods are maintained in a coolable geometry, and that control rods are able to be inserted. The ability of a spacer grid assembly to resist lateral loads is usually characterized in terms of its dynamic and static crush strengths. Since the crush strengths of a spacer grid assembly are known to depend on the weld qualities at the intersections of the slotted grid straps, high-tech welding methods, such as a TIG welding, LASER beam welding or Electron beam welding method, have been used recently in the nuclear fuel manufacturing fields. In this study, to meet the above requirements, two kinds of researches were carried out. First, by adjusting the LASER beam welding parameters, an optimum welding combination of the LASER beam welding parameters was obtained for welding a spacer grid assembly. Second, a new LASER beam welding technique was proposed to obtain a longer weld line and a smaller weld bead size by tilting the LASER beam. The buckling strength of the spacer grid welded by the new LASER beam welding technique was enhanced by up to 30 % when compared to that by the conventional LASER beam welding method.

Résumé :
Two portable laser instruments are described which allow the engineer to simply ‘stand and point’ laser beams at a target surface in order to obtain a measurement of time-resolved vibration velocity. The first supplements the accelerometer and measures normal surface velocity but offers the advantage of non-contact measurement. Its use is demonstrated in detecting reduced nozzle pressures in fuel injectors. The second instrument is a laser torsional vibrometer which measures torsional oscillations of rotating machinery parts and in particular crankshaft oscillation. Comparisons are made with the more standard technique which utilizes a slotted disc. The new instrument provides advantages of non-contact measurement, insensitivity to shaft radial motion and the ability to measure oscillations of shafts of arbitrary cross-section.

Résumé :
We report nanophotonic silicon-based devices for hybrid integration: 1D photonic crystal (PhC) on optical fiber, i. e. fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing probe integrated in fiber laser structure for chemical sensors and slotted planar 2D PhC cavity combined with carbon nanotube (CNT) towards light nanosources. The experiments have been carried out by integrating 1D PhC on optical fiber in fiber laser structure. This structure possesses many advantages including high resolution for wavelength shift, high optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of about 50~dB, the small full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of about 0.014~nm therefore its accuracy is enhanced, as well as the precision and capability are achieved for remote sensing. Low nitrate concentration in water from 0 to 80 ppm has been used to demonstrate its sensing ability in the experiment. The proposed sensor can work with good repeatability, rapid response, and its sensitivity can be obtained of \(3.2\times 10^{ - 3}\) nm/ppm with the limit of detection (LOD) of 3~ppm. For 2D PhC cavity, enhancement of photoluminescence of CNT emission is observed. The semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) solution was prepared by polymer-sorted method and coupled with the confined modes in silicon slotted PhC cavities. The enhancement ratio of 1.15 is obtained by comparing between the PL peaks at two confined modes of the cavity. The PL enhancement result of the integrated system shows the potential for the realization of on-chip nanoscale sources.

Résumé :
A spacer grid assembly, which is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps welded at the intersections to form an egg crate structure, is one of the core structural components for the nuclear fuel assemblies of a Pressurized light Water Reactor (PWR). The commercial spacer grid assembly is spot-welded at the crossing points of the intersections by a TIG welding, LASER beam welding or Electron beam welding method. In this study, a LASER beam welding apparatus and a method for an inner strap welding has been proposed to obtain a longer and finer weld line and a smaller weld bead size for a spacer grid assembly for a PWR fuel assembly. Also a rapid welding and excellent weld quality have been achieved by the proposed welding apparatus and method.

Résumé :
We have designed and fabricated a kind of supersymmetric slotted Fabry–Perot semiconductor laser near 1550 nm to achieve a single-mode, high-power, and narrow-linewidth operation. The structure of the laser is composed of an electrically pumped broad ridge waveguide in the middle to provide optical gain, a group of periodic slots etched near the front facet to suppress the extra longitudinal modes and achieve a narrow linewidth, and a pair of passive superpartner waveguides located on both sides to filter out the high-order lateral modes in the broad waveguide. The device measured under the temperature of 25 °C shows an output power of 113 mW, a single-lobe lateral far-field distribution with the full width at half maximum of 7.8°, a peak wavelength of 1559.7 nm with the side-mode suppression ratio of 48.5 dB, and an intrinsic linewidth of 230 kHz at the bias current of 800 mA. The device is a promising candidate for cost-effective light sources for coherent communication systems and LiDARs.

Résumé :
Produce of coronary stents demands advanced precision. In the present study, electropolishing was performed on stainless steel slotted tube coronary stents made by laser cutting. The surface quality of stents has a significant influence on biocompatibility, therefore the optimal method for electropolishing were explored. Additionally, acid pickling as the pretreatment of electropolishing was also conducted. Pickling was necessary prior to electropolishing for decreasing roughness of the cutting zone and for removing the oxide films covering the stent surface. An optimal condition for electropolishing could also be established and it caused a smooth stent surface. Material removal (weight loss and strut width change) in the process of both pickling and electropolishing was investigated. Furthermore, material characterization of the stents was determined by means of composition analysis, metallographic characterization and microstructural analysis.

Résumé :
To solve the forming problems of the outdoor antenna reflector elements with large curvature continuous surface, the combined forming process (CFP) of stretch preforming and cemented postforming was proposed. The key technologies of CFP mainly included four technologies such as the building of a surface model, the creation of the process supplement surface (PSS), the setup of the three layers aluminum plates (TLAP) locating holes and the laser cutting process to shape the outer edge of the TLAP applied in the reconfigurable multi-point die (RMPD). These key technologies were systematically researched. The measurements of the reflector elements and comparative analysis between the three processes (CFP, slitted and slotted process) were given. The results showed that the CFP had an advantage in large curvature forming, high precision forming and continuous working surface forming.
