Résumé :
This paper describes a measurement method for three-dimensional (3D) slit width deviations of long precision slot dies, which are essential for process control in manufacturing. A sensor unit consisting of two laser probes with their measurement axes aligned along the same Z-directional line but with opposite measurement directions, is placed between the two parts of the slot die to scan the two opposing surfaces of the parts along the X- and Y-axes. The variation of the sum of the laser probe outputs, which shows the deviation of the distance between the two surfaces, corresponds to the deviation of the slit width in the Z-direction. The 3D slit width deviations can be obtained accurately through scanning the entire surface in the X Y plane. In addition, the surface flatness of the parts can also be measured accurately by adding one more probe. Measurement experiments have been conducted on a precision grinding machine. The measurement results have indicated that the 3D slit width deviations and flatness can be measured with a repeatability error of less than 1 micron, which meets the requirement for quality control of slot dies.

Résumé :
Meander lines (MLs) in two configurations are presented to reduce the mutual coupling (MC) between two microstrip patch antenna elements. Inserting a slot in the ground plane between the antenna elements is a simple method to reduce the MC, while adding the MLs in the slot of the ground can further reduce the MC. In the first configuration, one ML is inserted in the slot of the ground and a maximum MC reduction of 39 dB throughout the −10 dB bandwidth is achieved. What’s more, the radiation patterns are not changed compared with the dual-element microstrip antenna array with a slotted ground. For the second configuration, two MLs are added in the slot of the ground. It is found that a maximum isolation of 53 dB can be obtained. However, the radiation patterns are slightly changed compared with the dual-element microstrip antenna array with a slot in the ground. Meanwhile, the measured peak gain and efficiency of the dual-element microstrip antenna array in the two configurations are given. Along with this paper, several prototypes have been fabricated and measured. The simulated results are in good accordance with the measurements, which are presented to verify that MC reduction can be achieved between microstrip antenna elements by adding the MLs in the slotted ground.

Résumé :
AbstractThis paper presents a cavity-backed dual-slot antenna in 0.13-μm SiGe BiCMOS technology. The dual-slot structure is excited by a cross-shaped strip line and a cavity which is formed by the topmost metal layer connected to the bottom metal layer through vias in between. By adopting dual-slot and cross-shaped feed line, the bandwidth is significantly enhanced by 196% compared with the single-slot antenna with straight feed line. The reason for bandwidth enhancement has been analyzed. The proposed antenna shows a measured impedance bandwidth of 15.2 GHz from 248.2 to 263.4 GHz for |S11| < −10 dB. The simulated and measured peak gains of the cavity-backed dual-slot antenna are −1.3 and −2.1 dBi, respectively. The simulated radiation efficiency is 31.1%. The total size of the antenna is 0.46 mm × 0.48 mm.

Résumé :
In this paper, we propose a parking slot markings detection method based on the geometric features of parking slots. The proposed system mainly consists of two steps, namely, separating line detection and parking slot entrance detection. First, in the separating line detection stage, we propose a line-clustering method based on the line segment detection (LSD) algorithm. Our detecting and line-clustering algorithm can detect the separating lines that contain a pair of parallel lines with a fixed distance in a bird’s eye view (BEV) image under diverse lighting and ground conditions. Consequently, parking slot candidates are generated by pairing the separating lines according to the width of the parking slots. In the parking slot entrance detection process, we propose a multiview fusion-based learning approach that can increase the number of training samples by performing a perspective transformation on the acquired BEV images. The proposed method was evaluated using 353 BEV images covering diverse parking slot markings. Experiments show that the proposed method can recognize typical perpendicular and parallel rectangular parking slots, and a precision of 97.4% and recall of 96.6% are achieved.

Résumé :
An in-line slot waveguide sensor built in a polished flat platform of a D-shaped silicon cored fiber with a taper coupled region is proposed and investigated thoroughly. Simulation results show that the single-mode light field sustained in the silicon cored fiber can be efficiently transferred to the slot waveguides through the tapered region. The geometry parameters of the slot waveguide sensors are optimized to have the corresponding highest power confinement factors and the resultant sensor sensitivities. The three-slot waveguide sensor is found to have the best performance among one-, two- and three-slot waveguides at the mid-IR wavelength.

Résumé :
The application of volumetric strip-slot transition for the implementationof wireless devices with contactless frequency-selective transmission of microwave signals is relevant. This is due to the compactness of volumetric strip-slot transition achieved by the multilayer arrangement of its functional parts and of its electrical frequency-selective characteristics. At the same time the volumetric-modular design allows the replacement of its individual components which provides high functional flexibility of the device. Reducing of weight and dimensions of the volumetric strip-slot transition while maintaining its electrical characteristics is possible due to well-known methods used in microwave technology: 1) using of substrates with a high value of the relative permittivity, 2) due to the transition to higher frequency ranges. The authors of this paper present the third method for reducing of weight and dimensions of the volumetric stripslot transition by using a U-shaped slot resonator. The development of the equivalent circuit of the volumetric strip-slot transition and calculation of all its lumped elements are also presented. The values of such lumped elements as linear capacitance of the strip line, linear inductance of the strip line, characteristic impedance of the slot transmission line were determined. The value of the inductive inhomogeneity occurred when the slot resonator bends by 90 degrees was calculated and its S-parameters in the frequency range were simulated. Numerical electrodynamics simulation was performed to confirm the validity of the results of circuit simulation. Then the experiment research of the sample of the volumetric strip-slot transition with the U-shaped slot resonator was carried out. The theoretical and experimental results of the conducted researches of volumetric strip-slot transition with the U-shaped slot resonator are in good qualitative and numerical agreement with each other. The use of the U-shaped slot resonator provides an opportunity to achieve a 36% reduction of weight and dimensions parameters of the volumetric stripslot transition while maintaining its electrical characteristics.

A microstrip slot antenna for C Band has been proposed with compact structure and suppressed back radiation. In this paper, the feeding technique used is aperture coupling with a modification that patches and the feed line are positioned below the substrate and the slot is etched above the substrate. The position of the patches along the slot axis is kept at the negative peak of the standing wave distributions to generate the voltage null on the slot line so as to have a 180º phase shift in the centre of the patch hence achieving better front to back ratio. Also the gain of 6.774dB is achieved in this design. The results are validated by simulation measurements.

Résumé :
A high-sensitivity microstrip patch sensor antenna (MPSA) loaded with a meander-line slot (MLS) is proposed for the measurement of relative permittivity. The proposed MPSA was designed by etching the MLS along the radiating edge of the patch antenna, and it enhanced the relative permittivity sensitivity with an additional effect of miniaturization in the patch size by increasing the slot length. The sensitivity of the proposed MPSA was compared with that of a conventional rectangular patch antenna and a rectangular slit (RS)-loaded MPSA, by measuring the shift in the resonant frequency of the input reflection coefficient. Three MPSAs were designed and fabricated on a 0.76 mm-thick RF-35 substrate to resonate at 2.5 GHz under unloaded conditions. Sensitivity comparison was performed by using five different standard dielectric samples with dielectric constants ranging from 2.17 to 10.2. The experiment results showed that the sensitivity of the proposed MPSA is 6.84 times higher for a low relative permittivity of 2.17, and 4.57 times higher for a high relative permittivity of 10.2, when compared with the conventional MPSA. In addition, the extracted relative permittivity values of the five materials under tests showed good agreement with the reference data.

In this paper, electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) phenomena have been investigated numerically in the plasmonic waveguides composed of unsymmetrical slot shaped metal–insulator–metal (MIM) structures. By the transmission line theory and Fabry–Perot model, the formation and evolution mechanisms of plasmon-induced transparency were exactly analyzed. The analysis showed that the peak of EIT-like transmission could be changed easily according to certain rules by adjusting the geometrical parameters of the slot structures, including the coupling distances and slot depths. We can find a new method to design nanoscale optical switch, devices in optical storage and optical computing.

A novel low-profile reconfigurable CPW-fed slot antenna that is designed using a half-wavelength slot-line resonator is proposed in this paper. Frequency hopping can be easily achieved by incorporating a pair of PIN diodes, being controlled in either their on or off state. Benefited from the magnetic current distribution of a half-wavelength slot-line resonator, the radiation patterns at the two operating frequencies (1.8GHz and 2.45GHz) are very stable, being almost identical. Résumé :
Nowadays Vivaldi antennas are used as directional emitters with matching and balancing device at the input. As a rule, these devices cause additional losses in case of broadband operation. Besides, the use of the device leads to radiator pattern distortions, especially when operating in a wide frequency range. Stringent operating requirements (wide operating temperature, high humidity, salt fog, vibration, etc.), make the choice of proper chip very complicated. The aim of the study is to develop a slot antenna with a 50-ohm port at the input, which would be easy to manufacture and operate, while maintaining high gain in a wide frequency range. As is known, the field structure in the coplanar line is close to the field structure in the slit field close to it. As is known, the field structure in the coplanar line is similar to the field structure in the slot line. Using mathematics for such fields, means of electrodynamic modeling and numerical calculation, a system is developed that consists of two Vivaldi antennas fed by one coplanar line. Thus, the emitter has a close to a circular pattern and low losses in the structure of feeding, matching and balancing, the functions of which are performed by the coplanar line. The results are given for the frequency range of 1-6 GHz. The device as a whole is a dielectric substrate with radiating structure made as double-sided metallization. Finline-based emitters are acceptable to use for operation in higher frequencies. Antenna has low manufacturing cost and it is easy to repeat. Currently the authors are continuing work on the study of the use of such elements as part of antenna arrays.

Résumé :
The article deals with the trends in the development of structures, research work on modernization and creation of new vertical spindle cotton harvesting apparatus (CHA). Authors developed new CHA that works as follows: the CHA with a cotton picker moves on the cotton field; the cotton plants getting into the inter-drum slots are processed, that is, the raw cotton be harvested. The CHA are in their original position before picking raw cotton. When a thick cotton plant gets into the inter-drum slot of the front pair of drums, the spindle drums move apart and the inter-drum slot opens, while the connecting rods and the sliders move forward, providing the symmetrical opening of the slot relative to the longitudinal line of the cotton plant row. Further, this thick plant falls into the inter-drum slot of the second pair of drums, while the inter-drum slot of the second drums opens, while the connecting rods and the sliders move along the guides forward, providing the symmetrical opening of the slot relative to the longitudinal line of the cotton plant rows. With such a pairwise symmetric movement of the SD, depending on the thickness of the cotton plant, the force of spindle pressing on the cotton plant from both sides is identical and symmetrical, since the SD move symmetrically to the longitudinal line passing along the cotton plant row.

Résumé :
This paper presents a printed wide-slot antenna design and prototyping on available low-cost polymer resin composite material fed by a microstrip line with a rotated square slot for bandwidth enhancement and defected ground structure for gain enhancement. An I-shaped microstrip line is used to excite the square slot. The rotated square slot is embedded in the middle of the ground plane, and its diagonal points are implanted in the middle of the strip line and ground plane. To increase the gain, four L-shaped slots are etched in the ground plane. The measured results show that the proposed structure retains a wide impedance bandwidth of 88.07%, which is 20% better than the reference antenna. The average gain is also increased, which is about 4.17 dBi with a stable radiation pattern in the entire operating band. Moreover, radiation efficiency, input impedance, current distribution, axial ratio, and parametric studies of S11 for different design parameters are also investigated using the finite element method-based simulation software HFSS.

Résumé :
It is well known that the use of slotted stators in motors produces undesirable effects, such as magnetic flux distortion, additional losses, ripple torque, and vibration. However, a large number of studies pay more attention to stator slots and magnetic slot wedges (MSW) in asynchronous motors and permanent magnet motors, ignoring the same problems in large capacity high voltage line start permanent magnet synchronous motors (HVLSPMSM). In order to disclose the effect of the stator slot on HVLSPMSMs, the no-load air gap magnetic field distribution and stator leakage reactance are studied. Meanwhile, the differences in the starting torque, pull-in torque and pull-out torque of four slot models are compared, and the starting performance is more affected by stator slot. In practical manufacturing, the application of MSWs is the main way to change the electromagnetic performance of stator slots, so the influence of MSWs under different permeabilities on the performance of HVLSPMSMs is investigated. Finally, the effect of a stator slot on the motor starting performance and the rated performance are verified by prototypes and experimental tests, which provide a reference for the application of MSWs in HVLSPMSMs.

Résumé :
A wideband slot antenna for mobile phone applications is proposed. The antenna has two slots with open ends etched on the opposite edges of the ground plane. The main slot, of total length of 59 mm, is composed of a rectangle connected to a circle having radius of 5 mm. Another slot, having a rectangular shape with width of 2.8 mm and length of 26 mm, is employed to enhance the antenna bandwidth. The slots are fed by means of a rectangular monopole connected to a circular patch joined to a bent 50 Ω microstrip transmission line forming two right angles. To obtain a wideband impedance matching, the upper edge of the monopole and a part of the feeding line evolve along the top edge of the two slots. To reduce the antenna size, the upper part of the board above the slot (just 3 mm from the slot) is folded vertically to the ground plane. The measured bandwidth of the antenna is 0.698–1.10 GHz and 1.64–2.83 GHz covering LTE700/2300/2500, GSM850/900/1800/1900, and UMTS bands.

Résumé :
A conventional Geneva mechanism must have at least three radial slots (stations). This paper shows that it is possible to design a Geneva mechanism with only two slots, provided that the shape of the slot is not a straight radial line but a curved line. The design procedure of the two slot Geneva wheel is outlined in this paper. In addition, two different methods are provided to reduce the size of the slot and change its shape in order to make the mechanism feasible for practical applications. The reduction of the slot size is achieved either by choosing appropriate values for α0, which is the half indexing angle of the crank, or by using the method of offsetting. The offsetting technique presents an excellent capability of suitably altering the slot shape without affecting the kinematic properties of the mechanism. The paper also shows the superior kinematic characteristics of Geneva wheels having two slots. The design and manufacture of these mechanisms are simple, and they have a good potential for wide ranging practical applications.

Résumé :
This paper proposes a planar wideband microstrip feedline to a slot-line-based patch antenna for high-frequency pattern diversity applications. The antenna consists of two adjacent rectangular patches separated by the ground slots, with a directive patch slot along the edge of the substrate. A compact common feedline-to-slot configuration is used to miniaturize the antenna. The antenna is designed in stages, starting with an in-phase feedline, followed by a slot line structure, with two radiating patches on top and a director on the side. This creates radiation diversity with directive radiation patterns. The antenna was fabricated and analyzed inside a far-field anechoic chamber. The experimental results validate the return loss, gain, and radiation performance. The measured results of the antenna within a frequency range of 8.5 to 11 GHz show good agreement with the simulation. The antenna has a maximum gain of 9.2 dBi and has the potential to be beneficial for beam steering and X-band applications due to its low profile, broad bandwidth, high gain, and good directivity.

Résumé :
Abstract In this research article, the design of a broadband monopole antenna with triband notch characteristics is proposed. Notch characteristics are achieved by using an E-shaped slot on the patch and a U-shaped slot on the 50 Ω microstrip feed line. An E-shaped slot is introduced on the metal patch to reject one frequency band of 6.6 − 7.5 GHz and when an additional U-shaped slot is introduced on the microstrip feed line, it provides two-notch frequency bands of 4.8 − 5.7 GHz and 14.2 − 17.5 GHz. The notch bands are effectively used to avoid undesired interference from the WLAN, C band, and Ku band. The proposed antenna provides a very broad frequency range from 3.3 − 19.5 GHz except for three notch bands. The antenna is small in size and easy to design with only a volume of 29 mm × 21mm × 1.6 mm. The antenna is useful for broadband applications.

Résumé :
A filtering slot antenna with a simple structure combination using characteristic mode analysis (CMA) is proposed. To realize filtering characteristics, characteristic magnetic currents of line and ring slots are analyzed and designed. Then, the folding-line slot and double-ring slot are selected to realize radiation null separately and combined to construct the basic slot antenna. By properly exciting the selected characteristic modes, a wide filtering bandwidth and a stable gain are obtained. To validate the design process, a prototype antenna with a finite ground plane of about 1.1 λ × 1.1 λ is designed and fabricated. Simulated and measured results agree well, which both show a sharping roll rate in the lower and higher frequency and a flat gain realization in the pass band. The filtering bandwidth is 32.7%, the out-of-band suppression level at the higher frequency is over 20 dB, and the gain in the working frequency varies from 3.9 to 5.2 dB.

Résumé :
A Geneva wheel with curved slots is proposed as an intermittent rotary motion generating mechanism. The proposed mechanism has vastly improved kinematic characteristics. Changing the slot shape from a straight radial line to a curved line results in the elimination of shock loading at the beginning and end of the motion cycles and reduces the wheel peak velocity and peak acceleration values, making this new mechanism well suited for high speed applications. In addition, the designer can freely select the dwell to motion time ratio of the wheel. Furthermore, this paper presents a great improvement to the design of a curve slotted Geneva wheel, by introducing an offset to the curved slot. The offsetting technique, which does not alter the kinematic characteristics of the mechanism, modifies the shape of the slot. A suitable offset can yield a curved slot acceptable for practical applications. This development provides an important tool for designing a simple, practical and reliable intermittent motion generating mechanism with excellent kinematic characteristics.

Résumé :
In this paper, a half-elliptical disc ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna integrated with a reconfigurable rectangular slot antenna is presented. It consists of a half-elliptical disc radiator to operate in the UWB mode whereas the etched rectangular slot on the half-elliptical patch is designed to operate as a reconfigurable narrowband slot antenna which is fed through a microstrip line from the back side of the patch. Both the antennas are placed in such a way that they are isolated to each other. Frequency reconfigurability has been achieved by inserting three lumped elements (two PIN diodes and a varactor diode) in the slot. An approximate transmission line model of the proposed slot antenna is derived to calculate the proper positioning of the diodes, and the design has been verified through numerical simulations. The simple compact proposed antenna covers a wide frequency range from 0.75 to 12[Formula: see text]GHz. Additionally, a wide tuning range from 0.8 to 2.9[Formula: see text]GHz (with the frequency ratio of 3.625:1) has been achieved. This compact integrated antenna is a good choice to be implemented in Cognitive Radio (CR) devices.
