Kahn, S. Lowell. Flip Techniques : Obtaining Antegrade and Retrograde Femoral Access Through a Single Access Site. Sous la direction de S. Lowell Kahn, Bulent Arslan et Abdulrahman Masrani. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199986071.003.0024.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Retrograde access of the common femoral artery for ipsilateral iliac and up-and-over contralateral iliac-to-tibial interventions has been the standard of care for lower extremity procedures. However, ipsilateral antegrade access has gained popularity for infrainguinal occlusive disease. Proximity of the access site to the point of occlusion confers a higher technical success rate. Interestingly, there are times where conversion of a single femoral access from retrograde to antegrade or antegrade to retrograde may be desired. Three techniques are reviewed in this chapter: the first technique involves using a reverse curve catheter in conjunction with a Glidewire. The second technique is a “rebound” method whereby a Fogarty catheter is inflated just beyond the tip of a retrograde sheath to deflect a side-by-side Glidewire in the opposite direction. The third technique describes converting an antegrade sheath back to retrograde using a “buddy wire.”

Résumé :
This article offers an introduction to acoustic remote sensing. In shipwreck studies, acoustic remote sensing has traditionally been used for reconnaissance surveys and for site relocation. With the advent of higher-resolution sonar systems, the focus in shipwreck studies has shifted toward site reconstruction and studies of site formation. Acoustic systems provide baseline data at rates higher than those of experienced dive teams. This article describes how acoustic data is generated. It describes the profiling methods such as single-beam echo-sounders and sub-bottom profilers, and swath methods such as side-scan sonar and multibeam echo-sounders. The last few years have seen developments of multielement sonar platforms, which allow for the acquisition of true concurrent sonar data sets from one platform. Every phase of development in sonar technology brings an increase in sensors' resolving capability and therefore the ability to image smaller and smaller artifacts in greater detail.

Trinkaus, Erik, Alexandra P. Buzhilova, Maria B. Mednikova et Maria V. Dobrovolskaya. The People of Sunghir. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199381050.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this latest volume in the Human Evolution Series, Erik Trinkaus and his co-authors synthesize the research and findings concerning the human remains found at the Sunghir archaeological site. It has long been apparent to those in the field of paleoanthropology that the human fossil remains from the site of Sunghir are an important part of the human paleoanthropological record, and that these fossil remains have the potential to provide substantial data and inferences concerning human biology and behavior, both during the earlier Upper Paleolithic and concerning the early phases of human occupation of high latitude continental Eurasia. But despite many separate investigations and published studies on the site and its findings, a single and definitive volume does not yet exist on the subject. This book combines the expertise of four paleoanthropologists to provide a comprehensive description and paleobiological analysis of the Sunghir human remains. Since 1990, Trinkaus et al. have had access to the Sunghir site and its findings, and the authors have published frequently on the topic. The book places these human fossil remains in context with other Late Pleistocene humans, utilizing numerous comparative charts, graphs, and figures. As such, the book is highly illustrated, in color. Trinkaus and his co-authors outline the many advances in paleoanthropology that these remains have helped to bring about, examining the Sunghir site from all angles.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Evolution of a many-body system consists of permanent collisions among particles. Looking at the motion of a single particle, one can identify encounters by which a particle abruptly changes the direction of flight, these are seen as true collisions, and small-angle encounters, which in sum act as an applied force rather than randomising collisions. The scattering on impurities is used to introduce the mentioned mechanisms and, in particular, to show how they affect each other. Point impurities are assumed, i.e. impurities the potential of which is restricted to a single atomic site of the crystal lattice. In this case interaction potentials never overlap and many-body effects are due to nonlocal character of the quantum particle. To introduce elementary components of the formalism, in this chapter we first describe the interaction of an electron with a single impurity. Lippman–Schwinger equations are derived and the physics behind the collision delay, dissipativeness and optical theorems is explored.

Résumé :
It is hard to imagine a time when the world of science and medicine did not know that morphine or other opioids administered to the spinal cord produced analgesia. However, this was the current state of knowledge in the early 1970s before the studies of Yaksh and Rudy created one of the most important paradigm shifts in the treatment of pain. The landmark paper is a pharmacology paper describing the results of the first comprehensive study of spinal opioid analgesia in the rat. The study produced the first full dose-response curves for morphine, fentanyl, methadone, and meperidine and proved a spinal site of opioid action. Classic pharmacological analysis yielded a competitive interaction at a single site, the as-yet undiscovered opioid receptors. Most importantly, with this paper, Yaksh and colleagues began a lifetime of cutting-edge research that would reveals the complex nature of pain processing and numerous classes of analgesic agents.

Berthod, Olivier, Michael Grothe-Hammer et Jörg Sydow. Inter-organizational ethnography. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198796978.003.0011.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Olivier Berthod, Michael Grothe-Hammer, and Jörg Sydow report an unconventional research design using multi-site ethnography. The aim is to study inter-organizational relationships, which are not well understood, and are not addressed by single-site ethnographic methods. Ethnography is a popular and established methodology in organization studies. However, organizing is a process that crosses boundaries, and the traditional approach that involves immersing the ethnographer in one defined social or organizational setting means that inter-organizational phenomena are overlooked. The challenge is to conduct fieldwork at multiple sites, across which inter-organizational relations may be conducted with varying degrees of formality, and be more or less visible. Inter-organizational ethnography thus builds on the combination of several techniques. Four techniques are explored: following boundary objects, capturing network enactments, using several investigators, and repeat interviews. The methodology is illustrated with a study of the network of eighty organizations that deal with large-scale crises and emergencies in Düsseldorf.

Résumé :
In this chapter, the Greek sources are discussed in two parts: first, the epigraphic sources such as the lead tablets from Dodona and the inscriptions from Didyma and Claros, and second, the literary sources containing narratives on consultations of the oracles at Delphi, Didyma, and Claros. Although not a single original oracle report from Delphi, the most famous oracle site in the Greek world, has been preserved, the evidence of the Delphic oracle is examined through literary sources. Oracle collections from Athens and Sparta and their connection with chresmologues are also discussed.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Basic concepts of inner shell double ionisation phenomena are discussed and examples are presented. An empirical model to calculate single-site K-shell double ionisation energies is proposed and the enhanced chemical shifts in double L-shell ionisation are illustrated. Core–valence double ionisation spectra are shown to closely resemble photoelectron spectra from single ionisation in many cases. Core–valence double ionisation spectra of NH3, CO, CO2, OCS, CS2, CF4, Si(CH3)4, benzene, and C60 are presented with analysis. In the context of core ionisation it is customary to use the very economical ‘KLM’ notation, which is universally used in Auger spectroscopy, as well as the chemists’ familiar 1s, 2s, 2p, and so on. This chapter uses the KLM notation sparingly where its brevity is an advantage, so a short table list of equivalents is also included here.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Ainu is a typical polysynthetic language in that a single complex verb can express what takes a whole sentence in most other languages. A single verb form may include more than one heavy element: up to two applicative prefixes (out of three), two causative suffixes (out of five), two incorporated objects, one lexical prefix (out of two originating in nouns ‘head’ and ‘bottom’), one verbalizing suffix (originating in the verb ‘make’), as well as reciprocal, reflexive, and general object (=antipassive) prefixes and agreement affixes for the first/second person subject and object. The degree of combinability of voice markers and noun incorporation is spectacular. Nevertheless, it has been claimed that Ainu deviates from more typical polysynthetic languages in having less freedom of word order, interrogative phrases in situ, and unrestricted morphological causatives (Baker 1996). This chapter aims to distinguish what Ainu shares with other polysynthetic languages from what is unique.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
'Göytepe: Neolithic Excavations in the Middle Kura Valley, Azerbaijan' publishes the first round of fieldwork and research (2008-2013) at this key site for understanding the emergence and development of food-producing communities in the South Caucasus. Situated close to the Fertile Crescent of Southwest Asia, where Neolithisation processes occurred earlier, research in the South Caucasus raises intriguing research questions, including issues of diffusion from the latter and interaction with ‘incoming’ Neolithic communities as well as the possibility of independent local Neolithisation processes. In order to address these issues in the South Caucasus, a joint Azerbaijan–Japan research programme was launched in 2008 to investigate Göytepe, one of the largest known Neolithic mounds in the South Caucasus. The results of the first phase of the project (2008-2013) presented here provide rich archaeological data from multi-disciplinary perspectives: chronology, architecture, technology, social organisation, and plant and animal exploitation, to name a few. This volume is the first to present these details in a single report of the South Caucasian Neolithic site using a high-resolution chronology based on dozens of radiocarbon dates.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter is a complement to chapter five. Where chapter five examined handwriting as a site of the social and the individual, this chapter deals with vocabularies in a similar context. It focuses in particular on the nature of the swearing in the libels, a substantial sample of which are reproduced and discussed in this chapter. Swan’s obscenities were creative in a childish way, reflecting the fact that, as a respectable single woman, she was excluded from the kinds of places where people learned to swear proficiently. Her profanity was ‘bad language’ not just in the ordinary sense, but also in the allusive sense used by the ethnographic historian Greg Dening: a failure to master the codes of a specific social setting.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is an important cause of childhood renal- and liver-related morbidity and mortality with variable disease expression. Many patients manifest peri- or neonatally with a mortality rate of 30–50%, whereas others survive to adulthood with only minor clinical features. ARPKD is typically caused by mutations in the PKHD1 gene that encodes a 4074-amino acid type 1 single-pass transmembrane protein called fibrocystin or polyductin. Fibrocystin/polyductin is among other cystoproteins expressed in primary cilia, basal bodies, and centrosomes, but its exact function has still not been fully unravelled. Mutations were found to be scattered throughout the gene with many of them being private to single families. Correlations have been drawn for the type of mutation rather than for the site of the individual mutation. Virtually all patients carrying two truncating mutations display a severe phenotype with peri- or neonatal demise while surviving patients bear at least one hypomorphic missense mutation. However, about 20–30% of all sibships exhibit major intrafamilial phenotypic variability and it becomes increasingly obvious that ARPKD is clinically and genetically much more heterogeneous and complex than previously thought.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
As in single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET) involves the injection of a radiopharmaceutical, the physiological properties of which determine its distribution within the patient. The labelling radionuclide then allows this distribution to be imaged. The value of cardiac PET as a routine clinical tool, particularly for perfusion imaging, was previously limited by the expense and scarcity of cameras and the short half-lives of the radionuclides with complex radiochemistry. The need for an on-site cyclotron to produce these radiopharmaceuticals made a clinical service non-viable. A number of recent developments, however, have led to renewed interest in cardiac PET. This chapter covers PET instrumentation, detail on the radiopharmaceuticals used in cardiac PET, and a number of sections on F-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) PET covering infection and inflammation imaging.

Résumé :
Bathhouses (hamams) play a prominent role in Turkish culture, because of their architectural value and social function as places of hygiene, relaxation and interaction. As architectural spaces, hamams have been continuously shaped by social and historical change at many scales. The life story of Mimar Sinan’s Çemberlitaş Hamamı in Istanbul provides an important example: established in 1583/4, it was modernized in the Turkish Republic (since 1923) and now is a tourist attraction. As a social space shared between tourists and Turks, it is a critical site through which to investigate how global tourism affects local traditions and how places provide a nucleus of cultural belonging in a globalized world. This book constitutes the first in-depth, monographic study of a single hamam, espousing an original and experimental biographical approach.

Tree Faller's Manual. CSIRO Publishing, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101746.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Tree Faller’s Manual is an essential handbook for forest operators and others who need to fell trees manually using a hand-held chainsaw. This manual builds on the information provided by the Chainsaw Operator’s Manual. Tree felling is a high risk activity. Many fatalities and serious injuries have occurred as a result of being struck by falling trees, dislodged tree limbs or other dangers in the area. Most of these accidents are caused by using unsafe felling techniques and not following safe work procedures. This manual will guide the faller to safer work techniques. The manual is based on the national competency standards for the forest and forest products industry where tree-felling is covered using three categories: basic, intermediate and advanced. Basic tree felling applies to trees that are relatively small, with a single stem and no defects. Intermediate tree felling covers trees with single or multiple stems, limited defects, and lean and weight distribution that can be adapted to felling direction. Advanced tree felling applies to larger and more complex trees and includes trees deemed to be more hazardous. Workplace safety, risk assessment and site preparation are included along with the theory, techniques and tools for each of the tree-felling categories.

Résumé :
Benign biliary strictures are a common clinical entity encountered by the interventionalist. Balloon dilatation is an acceptable modality of treatment, but restenosis is frequent. The recoil that follows balloon dilatation of recalcitrant benign biliary strictures presents a treatment challenge. This chapter presents a single-access dual-drainage catheter technique that has been employed successfully for more than 6 years. The procedure involves the standard placement of a large drainage catheter (ideally 14 Fr) across the biliary stricture. A second catheter measuring between 5 and 8.5 Fr is advanced through the hub of the 14 Fr drainage catheter and subsequently exits through a proximal hole of the 14 Fr drainage catheter. At the site of the stricture, there is side-by-side placement of the two drainage catheters providing extra scaffolding despite the 14 Fr percutaneous tract.

Résumé :
After nearly two decades of investigations at Fort St. Joseph, historical archaeologists have revealed the contours of everyday life at one of the most important French colonial outposts in the western Great Lakes region. Initially founded as a mission along the St. Joseph River in the 1680s, the French soon established a settlement amidst their Miami and Potawatomi allies, and the site became a strategic stronghold before it was abandoned in 1781. For many years, the site eluded archaeological discovery, until 1998 when Western Michigan University archaeologists identified material evidence of the long-lost Fort. In 2002, after a century of searching for the Fort, subsurface testing revealed undisturbed archaeological deposits in the form of fireplaces, pits, and trash middens—definitive material evidence of Fort St. Joseph. Under the auspices of the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project, subsequent fieldwork and analysis have focused on examining the materiality of the Fort and the relationships between the Fort residents and local native populations. Fort St. Joseph Revealed employs archaeological and documentary sources to examine the history and culture of a fur trade society on the frontier of New France. This collection of papers is the first compilation of analyses derived from documents, cultural features, plant and animal remains, and various artifacts both to explore the importance of Fort St. Joseph in the past and in the present and to synthesize data on the colonial frontier from the perspective of a single place in the western Great Lakes region.

Margaret Cavendish's prolific and wide-ranging contributions to seventeenth-century intellectual culture are impossible to contain within the discrete confines of modern academic disciplines. Paying attention to the innovative uses of genre through which she enhanced and complicated her writings both within literature and beyond, this collection addresses her oeuvre and offers the most comprehensive and multidisciplinary resource on Cavendish's works to date. The astonishing breadth of her varied intellectual achievements is reflected through elegantly arranged sections on History of Science, Philosophy, Literature, Politics and Reception, and New Directions, together with an Afterword by award-winning novelist Siri Hustvedt. The first book to cover nearly all of Cavendish's major works in a single volume, this collection brings together a variety of expert perspectives to illuminate the remarkable ideas and achievements of one of the most fascinating and prolific figures of the early modern period.

Schechter, Elizabeth. Subjects of Experience and Subjective Perspectives. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198809654.003.0002.

Résumé :
This chapter offers a preliminary defense of the claim that the two hemispheres of a split-brain subject are associated with distinct subjects of experience. The empirical basis of this 2-subjects claim is that, while both hemispheres are the source or site of elements of experience, these elements are unified only within each hemisphere system, and not across them. In other words, consciousness is unified intrahemispherically, but disunified interhemispherically. A split-brain subject thus has two subjective perspectives, one associated with the right hemisphere and one with the left. Our first-personal way of understanding what it is to be an experiencing subject, however, makes it impossible for a single subject of experience to have multiple subjective perspectives in just the same way that another subject of experience has one. It seems to follow that the two hemispheres of a split-brain subject are associated with distinct subjects of experience, each standing in just the relation to its one perspective that I do to mine.

Résumé :
Food activism sits at the intersection of many different social movements. For example, one might engage in food activism because one wants to combat racism, sexism, classism, speciesism, and more. The pluralistic nature of food activism has risks and benefits. For instance, it can lead to conflict across movements, but it can also lead to the building of alliances across movements. This chapter examines the debate between multi-issue food activism, which spans multiple movements and addresses multiple issues, and single-issue food activism, which does not. It begins by reviewing the kinds of connections across issues that are relevant here. It then presents and evaluates two arguments for multi-issue food activism—one principled and one pragmatic—and three approaches to multi-issue food activism—unity, solidarity, and mutual understanding. Finally, the chapter closes with a few preliminary conclusions about how food activism can be done in a thoughtful and strategic way.
