McCabe, Benjamin. « Sir Gawain and Scholasticism ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/19599.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The following thesis makes a reading of the Middle English romance of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight that contextualises the poem within the framework of Scholastic thought, focusing in particular on the influence of the Scholastic discussions of moral philosophy, in order to better understand the poem’s treatment of moral indeterminacy. My approach to the poem is one that focuses on a historical understanding of ethics that prevailed in the poet’s time, and so is historicist in a broad sense, but focused particularly on the history of ideas. Rather than trying to read the poem through the lens of later modern philosophical and critical understandings, I explore how the moral issues addressed within the poem would have been framed in the late fourteenth-century. My thesis centres on the argument that a familiarity with the Scholastic approach to moral philosophy is indispensable to an authentic reading of SGGK. The poem’s plot focuses clearly on the moral dilemmas that Gawain is faced with, and wraps these in a complex of moral quandaries, making an understanding of these in fourteenth-century terms imperative. From this premise, I argue that it is therefore of great importance to appreciate how these ethical issues were conceived of in the fourteenth-century. The suggestion that the moral hermeneutic of the poem emerges within a Scholastic frame is not new, nor is the suggestion that the poet is deeply interested in the tension between human weakness and Christian ideals. The following discussion of Scholastic thought includes a particular focus on the works of Thomas Aquinas, not because other medieval theologians deserve less attention, but because Aquinas’ pre-eminence and universal influence allows us to treat him as the most influential representative of that school of thought.

Burton, David Raymond. « Sir Godfrey Lagden : colonial administrator ». Thesis, Rhodes University, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1001848.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The thesis attempts to provide a chronological analysis of Lagden's colonial career between 1877 and 1907. The youngest son of a parish priest, Lagden received limited formal education and no military training. By a fortuitous set of circumstances, he was able, as a man on the spot, to attain high ranking posts in colonial administration. As a young man, he acquired considerable experience in the Transvaal, Egypt and the Gold Coast. However, blatant disobedience led to his dismissal from Colonial service. Fortunately for Lagden, Marshal Clarke, newly appointed Resident Commissioner of Basutoland, insisted on Lagden being appointed to his staff. Except for a brief stint in Swaziland, Lagden remained in Basutoland until 1900. With Clarke, Lagden played a prominent role in the implementation of the Imperial policy of securing the support of the Koena chiefs by allowing them to retain and consolidate their power and influence. Lagden became Resident Commissioner in Basutoland when Clarke was transferred to Zululand. He continued established policies and championed the Basotho cause by opposing the opening of Basutoland to prospectors and by stressing the industrious habits of the Basotho. His tactful and energetic handling of the rinderpest crisis reduced dramatic repercussions amongst the Basotho and enabled cooperative Koena chiefs to increase their economic and political leverage. Despite his reservations over Basotho loyalty, Lagden emerged from the South African War with an enhanced reputation as the Basotho remained loyal and energetically participated in the Imperial war effort. Largely because of his Basutoland experience, Lagden was appointed the Transvaal Commissioner of Native Affairs in 1901. He was responsible for regulating African labour supplies for the mines and delineation of African locations. His failure to procure sufficient labour and his defence of African rights earned Lagden much abusive settler condemnation. As chairman of the South African Native Affairs Commission, Lagden produced an uninspiring report conditioned by the labour shortage and his personal distaste for decisive action. Nevertheless, its advocacy of political and territorial segregation influenced successive Union governments.

Résumé :
Sir Walter Raleigh's poems, as tghey circulated in manuscripts, are influenced by Raleigh's position at court, his social situation, the patronage system, and the political scene. Even though many scholars believe that often verses were copied groups according to theme, careful consideration shows that verses that have been tradionally seen as related by theme have a stronger connection. The context of the peom can reveal a great deal about the intention of the author and the situation about which the author wrote.

Jezzard, Andrew. « The sculptor Sir George Frampton ». Thesis, University of Leeds, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/303/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
George Frampton (1860-1928) was arguably one of the most important sculptors of the movement that became known as 'The New Sculpture' in Britain from the 1880s to around 1920. Frampton's generation became known for its employment of detailed surface modelling, attention to anatomical detail and a predominance of bronze as a medium through which to express these matters. Frampton finished his schooling at the Royal Academy, after winning the Gold Medal and Travelling Studentship (which took him to Paris), in 1899. He went on to regularly exhibit at the RA and was elected an Associate in 1894 and full RA in 1902. His range of work was widespread in the fields of architectural decoration (internal and external), jewellery and silversmithery, commemorative medals, portraiture, all types of commemorative monumental sculpture, and ideal work. By 1908 when he received his knighthood, Frampton was a respected, efficient and dextrous maker of commissioned work and numerous prestigious schemes were afforded him. This range of work will be examined in depth and my research has uncovered many new works in these genres. It is the purpose of this thesis to resurrect Frampton's name ftom. the neglect it has suffered in art historical writings since the sculptor's death some 69 years ago.

Moretto, Irene.

Hitchings, Christian Nicholas Henry. « Samuel Johnson and Sir Thomas Browne ». Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2002. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.398115.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis explores the literary and intellectual relationship between Samuel Johnson and Sir Thomas Browne. It demonstrates the importance of Johnson's contribution to the history of criticism of Browne, and also constitutes a case study of Johnson's methods in compiling his Dictionary. I show what grounds there are for believing that Browne was of special importance to Johnson, and that there were significant affinities between the two writers. I set my work against the background of existing scholarship, which tends to neglect the links between Johnson and Browne. I consider the decline of Browne's reputation in the years that followed his death, suggesting how it is possible to see Johnson's work on Browne as a significant recuperation. I then examine Johnson's Life of Browne and the edition of Christian Morals to which it was prefixed, arguing that the Life is an important event in the development of Johnson's biographical method. I next consider the relationship between Browne's natural philosophy and Johnson's, focusing on three particular areas in which their thinking is allied: the emphasis on experiment and observation, the moral purpose of natural philosophy, and the attraction of `strangeness'. Thereafter I examine in detail Johnson's extensive use of extracts from Browne's works in his Dictionary. First I provide a description of Johnson's deployment of illustrative quotations culled from Browne, showing the distribution and sources of quotations, including those added for the fourth edition; the result is a `map' of the Dictionary's use of Browne. I then analyse these findings, in order to determine what fields of knowledge they delineate, as well as how they illustrate Johnson's critical interests and priorities. Finally, I consider Browne's nineteenth-century afterlife. I chart the influence of Johnson's critique and uses of Browne, and examine the championing of Browne by Coleridge, Hazlitt, Lamb and others

Wattanapat, Nugunn. « Sir Hubert Parry : an intellectual portrait ». Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12010/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Hubert Parry (1848-1918) is known by music listeners today as a composer rather than as a music scholar, yet his contemporaries recognised him as a highly prolific and influential educator and an accomplished writer on musical subjects. This thesis is the first in-depth investigation of its kind into this lesser-known side of Parry’s career, using his literary works as a vantage point from which to evaluate his highly complex persona. Through a close examination of available primary and secondary materials, the thesis aims to develop a biographically and historically consistent view of his writings, while also addressing serious discrepancies in current estimates of his philosophical opinions. Parry’s formative influences, his interests in science, his moral and socially conscious view of art, his views on religion, and his response to Nietzschean philosophy constitute the focus of this study. An attempt is also made towards the end to reconcile these findings with his music, through a contextual examination of the six ‘ethical cantatas’. This research opens new perspectives for Parry scholarship and lays the groundwork for a better understanding of the composer’s unique role in the development of music and musical scholarship in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Britain.

Most people recur to the consumption of cigarettes in search of pleasure and relaxation to calm the anxiety. It is known that these conventional cigarettes contain chemical additives that aggravate the health of people. In the following research work, the implementation of a cigarette without chemical additives made of the mapacho plant was evaluated, a product that is consumed in the Peruvian jungle, which can offer the same experience that a person has with a conventional cigarette. The final business model of the project and the validations that were made for each quadrant will be presented. Different experiments were carried out with people who smoke commercial cigarettes to validate if the product was accepted. Also, we realized that the mint flavor was requested when we offered the product in the experiments for which we decided to offer this new flavor. After validations and experiments, a final packaging was obtained with two presentations of cigarettes: traditional and mint. The sales of the final products were made through Facebook and directly with the people who already knew about the product. Finally, as a result of sales and expenses, plans and three-year projections of the budgets of the areas of operations, human resources, marketing, corporate social responsibility and finance were developed.

Patmore, David N. C. « The influence of recording and the record industry upon musical activity, as illustrated by the careers of Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Georg Solti and Sir Simon Rattle ». Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2001. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2018/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The objective of this study is to determine the nature of the influence of recording and the recording industry upon musical activity. Sound recording is a major communications medium of the twentieth century. Yet there has been limited research into the influence of recording and the changes that it has driven. This study seeks to address this gap in understanding. The method chosen for the study was three separate case studies of the conductors Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Georg Solti and Sir Simon Rattle. Each of these musicians had a major recording career, and in Rattle's case continues to do so. The data used in the study was collected from three sources: firstly through interviews with those possessing professional experience of the case-study subjects and of the record industry; secondly from archival documentation; and thirdly through published press interviews and commentaries. The analysis of commonalities and differences between the case study subjects indicated that each was generally in control of their involvement with recording, rather than the reverse. Three areas were identified as being of key importance: the relationship with record companies and with personnel within these; control over repertoire decisions; and mastery of the act of recording. Based on the experience of the three case-study subjects, a model of the influence of recording has been constructed. This relates each stage of the technological development of recording to its immediate consequences and to ‘meta-consequences', or the more far-reaching influences of recording. The principal ‘meta-consequences' are seen as being: an increase in knowledge; changes in performance standards; and the introduction of the idea of ethics into recording, with a re-emphasis upon the importance of the musical ‘act'. The study concludes with a discussion of possible future areas of research into the influence of recording and the record industry.

Urstad, Tone Dagny Sundt. « The works of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams ». Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1988. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/250916.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
What little work has been done in the past on the life of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams has been only marginally concerned with his literary activities. These deserve notice, however, because of the consistent way in which his works were used as political propoganda, and his willingness to change their political contents for reasons of political expediency. In bibliographical notes it is occasionally stated that the oeuvre of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams as presented in the only fairly comprehensive edition of his works, published in 1822, is unreliable. Commentators have very seldom attempted to be more specific than that, however. The aim of this thesis is to separate the incorrect from the correct attributions, and, where external evidence is lacking, to indicate whether certain works can be considered as likely or unlikely attributions on the basis of their political contents. The search for the context within which the works of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams were written has involved the study of how literature was used for political purposes in the years following the fall of Sir Robert Walpole. This thesis is therefore partially concerned with the nature of political parties in the mid-eighteenth century which has engaged the attention of so many modern historians of the period.

Résumé :
This thesis focusses upon the political career of one of the most popular radicals of the early nineteenth century, and yet a politician whose significance has been vastly underestimated. The thesis argues that Sir Francis Burdett's position inside the established political world, he was M.P. for Westminster from 1807 to 1837, made him absolutely vital to grassroots political radicalism. His willingness to champion the cause of parliamentary reform enabled a national rejuvenation of the radical cause to take place after the success of Pitt's repressive legislation in the 1790s. Following a chronological pattern, this thesis therefore traces Burdett's early campaigns for Middlesex in 1802 and 1804; his election for Westminster in 1807; his protest against the government in 1810; his leadership of the reform cause up to 1815; his break with other radical leaders in 1817; his subsequent role as an independent politician, and his part in the passing of the Reform Bill. The thesis argues that Burdett was not a wildly inconsistent politician, a view shared by contemporaries and historians, but was the very model of an early eighteenth century country gentleman. He was obsessed with independence, both as a political creed and code, and espoused an essentially moderate, and intrinsically English reform programme. Burdett's career is therefore a striking illustration of the immense longevity and popularity of early eighteenth century values right up to 1832. This thesis hopes to reveal the vital importance of the aristocratic politician to popular politics in the period, and to emphasise the eccentric, insular and retrospective character of English radicalism in these years.

Résumé :
The Middle English lai Sir Orfeo combines elements from the Greco-Roman, Christian, and Northern European folkloric traditions in a narrative which is both a successful romance and a text informed by Christian allegory. Through an examination of the poem's possible sources and analogues, I demonstrate that the lai's representation of Orpheus is rooted in the archaic Greek myth of Orpheus' triumphant rescue of individuals from the underworld. In Sir Orfeo, the early myth's emphasis on Orpheus' positive qualities—in particular his musical prowess—and its continuation in the literature and art of early Christianity is merged with folkloric elements which similarly focus on the power of music to defeat the destructive forces of the otherworld. The thesis argues that the protagonist, Orfeo, is thus represented as an agent of God's order and his defeat of otherworldly forces as an act of Christian heroism.

This thesis is a biography of Sir John Hall, a prominent New Zealand pioneer, pastoralist and politician. The study of his life provides insight into the colony's wider history but there is a significant personal dimension to this biography. It begins with an examination of Hall's childhood and early career in Britain and Europe, showing how his family and social context moulded his character and established habits and attitudes which remained with him for the rest of his life. Later chapters reveal how he made his fortune and explore his relationship with his wife and children, his response to family tragedy and the way in which he faced old age and mortality. By putting Hall in his context, we can learn much about the nature of the society in which he lived. The thesis explores his social role as a great pastoralist in the Hororata district, calling into question Stevan Eldred-Grigg's suggestion that there was a New Zealand 'gentry'. It examines the lives of his employees and the structure of his local community in the light of Miles Fairburn's theses about transience and 'chaos' on the colonial frontier. And, since Hall returned to Britain and Europe for lengthy periods, it makes suggestions about the status of colonials in English society and about Hall's emerging sense of New Zealand identity. Hall's prominence in public life rested on his career in politics which spanned forty years. He made a weighty contribution both in Canterbury's Provincial Council and in the General Assembly. The thesis focuses on Hall's place in the early faction system, his changing attitudes to the roles of the provinces and the central government, his contribution to the Stafford ministry of 1866-1869, his role as premier from 1879 to 1882, his handling of the Parihaka incident, the emergence of party politics and his part in the struggle which won the parliamentary suffrage for women. Hall was the author of significant administrative reforms and numerous measures promoting the colony's development. More surprisingly, perhaps, he was clearly the most significant democratic reformer in New Zealand's history. The paradoxical connection between his reforming role and his conservative political principles is thoroughly explored.

Hill, Stephen Anthony. « Sir James Maitland and the Howietoun Fishery ». Thesis, University of Stirling, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/1515.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
For several millennia man has in some way farmed his waters by holding fish captive in ponds. Not until the second half of the nineteenth century, however, as a result of a general concern in the industrialised nations that fishery stocks were declining, were serious attempts made to breed fish artificially. The most concerted of these attempts in Britain effectively began in 1873 when Sir James Maitland (1848-1897), a Scottish landowner, commenced experiments which evolved into the construction of the world's largest salmonoid piscicultural establishment. This operation, the Howietoun Fishery, sold its produce nationally on the open market, a new departure in pisciculture. It also advanced the piscicultural process scientifically in selectively breeding fish superior to nature's own. Maitland's work was not, in itself, particularly successful commercially. This was not, however, the result of commercial failure on his behalf but rather a reflection of his desire to develop pisciculture for the public good in an attempt to restock impoverished fisheries and to disseminate knowledge in the hope that others would be encouraged to imitate his example on a more commercial basis. Maitland's piscicultural work was highly important to the development of what has today become a significant global industry, though his contribution has not hitherto been recognised. The thesis intends to set out Maitland's piscicultural advances and their significance. It offers a detailed analysis of Maitland's entrepreneurship and casts its net wider to draw in some discussion of his work away from Howietoun, particularly on his membership of the Fishery Board for Scotland where it examines the debate over state support for nineteenth century British science. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the development of Howietoun in the seventy years after its founder's death. In addition to Maitland's own writings, the thesis uses evidence from Howietoun's general records, Maitland's family papers, Fishery Board for Scotland material, and a very wide variety of published sources.

The main objective of this dissertation is to deny these interpretations. The basis of Popper`s approach to Darwinism in his epistemology is not naturalistic but logical. This explains why Darwinism, which is not a scientific theory but a metaphysical research program, is so fruitful and helpful to science. Hence, if we are right, the label of naturalism attributed to the late epistemological works of Karl Popper is a simple case of misunderstanding.

Shaw, Laurence M. « SIR epidemics in a population of households ». Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/38606/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The severity of the outbreak of an infectious disease is highly dependent upon the structure of the population through which it spreads. This thesis considers the stochastic SIR (susceptible → infective → removed) household epidemic model, in which individuals mix with other individuals in their household at a far higher rate than with any other member of the population. This model gives a more realistic view of dynamics for the transmission of many diseases than the traditional model, in which all individuals in a population mix homogeneously, but retains mathematical tractability, allowing us to draw inferences from disease data. This thesis considers inference from epidemics using data which has been acquired after an outbreak has finished and whilst it is still in its early, `emerging' phase. An asymptotically unbiased method for estimating within household infectious contact rate(s) from emerging epidemic data is developed as well as hypothesis testing based on final size epidemic data. Finally, we investigate the use of both emerging and final size epidemic data to estimate the vaccination coverage required to prevent a large scale epidemic from occurring. Throughout the thesis we also consider the exact form of the households epidemic model which should be used. Specifically, we consider models in which the level of infectious contact between two individuals in the same household varies according to the size of their household.

Résumé :
Sir James Pennethorne (1801-1871) was the architectural heir of John Nash, in whose office he received much of his early training. From 1839 until 1870 he worked almost exclusively for the government: devising and carrying out major street improvement schemes in central London; designing and laying out the first metropolitan parks intended primarily for the use of the poor; acting as architecural surveyor to the Crown Estate in London; advising successive governments on schemes for new public buildings in the capital; and designing some of the most important of those buildings himself. He was one of the leading architects and urban planners of the mid 19th century, and a study of his career fills a major gap in the history of London, and the archtectural history of19th-century England. A first chapter traces Pennethorne's early career, examining his training, his role in the Nash office, and his first independently commissioned buildings. An assessment of his contribution to the planning of London follows, concentrating first on street improvements, then on the Crown Estate, and finally on parks. Pennethorne's main activities in these areas were concentrated in the 1840s and early 1850s. In 1844 he began his involvement in the planning and design of government buildings, and from the 1850s until his retirement the interest of his career is mainly architectural. A chapter traces hisdealings with the Office of Works, through which department government buildings were conceived and carried out. The buildings themselves are then considered by type: government offices, museums, royal residences, and a miscellaneous group which includes the Public Record Office and the first purpose-built headquarters of the University of London. A final chapter provides an assessment of Pennethorne's achievements and of his place in the history of English architecture.

Sir thomas malory's le morte darthur has too often been studied as merely the english version of the arthurian legends, a faithful translation adaptation of (for the most part) french originals. Closer study reveals that malory is by no means a translator and that his book, although not a work of literary invention, is an independent reworking of the matter of britain with a structure, a conception and an identity of its own. It is essential that malory be accorded the status of an author in his own right and that his work be studied according to literary standards which the book itself imposes rather than in the light of certain french works which malory was not, after all, trying to reproduce

Résumé :
Sir James Mitchell was a man with a passion and vision for a prosperous Western Australia, the land of his birth. His faith in Western Australia’s potential to become a thriving agricultural producing state drove him to fight for, and implement, policies which left his political colleagues in doubtful bewilderment. Nothing however, could dim his vision. This thesis is a study of Sir James’s Mitchell’s political personality and some of his achievements. These include, the Empire Settlement Scheme of 1922, the opening up and rapid development of the wheatbelt and his successes and challenges associated with this development throughout Western Australia between 1905 and 1933. In writing this dissertation I have been profoundly impacted by the discovery of the political character of Sir James Mitchell the politician who was also my grandfather, and intrigued by how the public figure identifies with the family figure who was very much part of my childhood and early adult years. Sir James Mitchell lived to see Western Australia’s agricultural industries become one of the state’s major sources of export revenue. Nearly a century later he is still remembered with respectful affection throughout the state as a great Western Australian.

Abdelsheed, Ismail Gad Ameen. « Fractional calculus : numerical methods and SIR models ». Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3422267.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Fractional calculus is ”the theory of integrals and derivatives of arbitrary order, which unify and generalize the notions of integer-order differentiation and n-fold integration”. The idea of generalizing differential operators to a non-integer order, in particular to the order 1/2, first appears in the correspondence of Leibniz with L’Hopital (1695), Johann Bernoulli (1695), and John Wallis (1697) as a mere question or maybe even play of thoughts. In the following three hundred years a lot of mathematicians contributed to the fractional calculus: Laplace (1812), Lacroix (1812), Fourier (1822), Abel (1823-1826), Liouville (1832-1837), Riemann (1847), Grunwald (1867-1872), Letnikov (1868-1872), Sonin (1869), Laurent (1884), Heaviside (1892-1912), Weyl (1917), Davis (1936), Erde`lyi (1939-1965), Gelfand and Shilov (1959-1964), Dzherbashian (1966), Caputo (1969), and many others. Yet, it is only after the First Conference on Fractional Calculus and its applications that the fractional calculus becomes one of the most intensively developing areas of mathematical analysis. Recently, many mathematicians and applied researchers have tried to model real processes using the fractional calculus. This is because of the fact that the realistic modeling of a physical phenomenon does not depend only on the instant time, but also on the history of the previous time which can be successfully achieved by using fractional calculus. In other words, the nature of the definition of the fractional derivatives have provided an excellent instrument for the modeling of memory and hereditary properties of various materials and processes.
Il calcolo frazionario e` ”the theory of integrals and derivatives of arbitrary order, which unify and generalize the notions of integer-order differentiation and n-fold integration”.

Galic, Hrvoje. « Heterochromatin dynamics upon release from stationary phase in budding yeast ». Thesis, Montpellier, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019MONTT006/document.

The budding yeast SIR complex (Silent Information Regulator) is the principal actor in heterochromatin formation, which causes epigenetically regulated gene silencing phenotypes. The maternal chromatin bound SIR complex is disassembled during replication and then, if heterochromatin is to be restored on both daughter strands, the SIR complex has to be reformed on both strands to pre-replication levels. The dynamics of SIR complex maintenance and re-formation during the cell-cycle and in different growth conditions are however not clear. Understanding exchange rates of SIR subunits during the cell cycle and their distribution pattern to daughter chromatids after replication has important implications for how heterochromatic states may be inherited and therefore how epigenetic states are maintained from one cellular generation to the next. We therefore used the tag switch RITE system to measure genome wide turnover rates of the SIR subunit Sir3 before and after exit from stationary phase and show that maternal Sir3 subunits are completely replaced with newly synthesized Sir3 at subtelomeric regions during the first cell cycle after release from stationary phase. We propose that the observed “reset” of the heterochromatic complex is an adaptive mechanism that ensures the activation of subtelomeric stress response genes by transiently destabilizing heterochromatin structure

Neville, Peter Edmund John. « The diplomacy of Sir Nevile Henderson, 1937-9 ». Thesis, Open University, 1998. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57880/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis, the first study of Nevile Henderson to be completed at doctoral level in the UK, takes a fresh look at Henderson's controversial role in Berlin between 1937 and 1939. It begins by re-examining Henderson's controversial appointment to the Berlin Embassy, and contends that a close study of his earlier career (especially in Belgrade between 1929 and 1935) help to explain those aspects of his behaviour that gave rise to criticism. After close analysis of published and unpublished Foreign Office documents, the thesis challenges the traditional view that Henderson favoured the Anschluss and the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia in 1938. It also re-examines the charge that he undermined British policy by making indiscreet remarks in Germany, and argues that his scepticism about the anti-Nazi opposition was fully justified. And that he did, to a degree, carry out his 'warning' function in Berlin. Another key aspect concerns the extent to which Henderson's line in Berlin had support in the Foreign Office, and the re-consideration of his pivotal relationships with Chamberlain and Halifax. Particular attention is paid to the decision to send Henderson (by then a seriously ill man) back to Berlin in February 1939. The author's overall view is that, given Henderson's flawed analysis of the Nazi regime, a totally revisionist analysis of his time in Berlin would be untenable. The main conclusions are (a) that Henderson's influence on British policy has been exaggerated and (b) that he has been unfairly treated by historians. This thesis seeks to redress the historical balance by presenting the first close analysis, and rounded account, of what Henderson called the 'failure of a mission'.

Résumé :
The survival of the 1711 sale catalogue of the library of Sir Thomas Browne and his heirs has given scholars of his work a privileged insight into his reading and book owning habits. Browne wrote on an encyclopaedic range of subjects and his prose bears the weight (implicit and explicit) of the many books and authors that contributed to his intellectual projects. As a consequence, his library and the 1711 catalogue have attracted intense interest from scholars, in spite of the absence of any physical trace of his books. This thesis examines the relationship between the catalogue and Browne's library as he knew and used it, striving for a bibliographical reconstruction whilst acknowledging the contingency and incompleteness of the catalogue. It also contributes to the critical study of Browne's works, assessing his book ownership for the elucidation of his texts, and considering his literary remains as an articulation of his reading. Quantitative analysis of the catalogue and a narrative of the life cycle of the library based on archival records are used to describe the library's contents and the practices of its owners. The local contexts of Browne's book ownership are outlined, together with the relationships of his works to his book sources, his museum collecting, and his position in the world of knowledge as articulated through library classification. Browne is described as a book owner who showed little interest in the possession of a 'library' as a discrete, permanent collection, despite his profound engagement with books, and the high numbers of volumes that passed through his hands. Browne's library was also networked, linked to other collections through textual exchange, social relationships, book gifts, and conversations, indicative of a mode of seventeenth-century book ownership defined by fluidity and community.

Coates, Hannah Susan. « Sir Francis Walsingham and mid-Elizabethan political culture ». Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20014/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis addresses Sir Francis Walsingham’s place in and thinking about mid-Elizabethan political culture. Often seen as the dour Puritan among Elizabeth’s advisers, this thesis aims to recalibrate opinions of Walsingham, in light of his conscious and sophisticated engagement with the currents of political thought and action through which he moved. Chapter 1 explores Walsingham’s early life and education, between his birth (c. 1532) and his appointment as special envoy to France in 1570, aiming to more thoroughly analyse and contextualise the impact this had on his later life. Chapter 2 examines Walsingham’s self-conscious construction of his role as adviser to Elizabeth through his correspondence with her, engaging particularly with his vocabulary and rhetorical strategies, including humanist-classical ideas of counsel. This chapter also analyses his longer political writings on the issues of Elizabeth’s projected marriage to the duke of Alençon and English intervention in the Low Countries, comparing Walsingham’s techniques and expression to the developing language of the “art of the state”. Chapter 3 and 4 explore Walsingham’s patronage in the Church of England and in English government in Ireland, to uncover the motivations and priorities that governed his interventions in these areas. Chapter 5 traces Walsingham’s career-long preoccupation with Scotland, as the principal example of his tendency to offer advice to foreign rulers, examining his contacts with key figures north of the border, the advice he offered directly and indirectly to James VI, and the language he used to describe Anglo-Scottish relations, and analysing his motivations and intentions for these unprecedented interventions.
