(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 (BNT) single crystals were grown by flux method at a high oxygen pressure (Po2) of 1 MPa, and their polarization properties were investigated. BNT single crystals exhibited a saturated polarization hysteresis with a remanent polarizations (Pr) of 31 μC/cm2 along [100]c, 44 μC/cm2 along [110]c and 54 μC/cm2 along [111]c. These results show that spontaneous polarization of BNT is approximately 55 mC/cm2 or larger.

Résumé :
A single-polarization solid-core anti-resonant fiber is proposed, and the influence of the fiber core material anisotropy of the solid-core anti-resonant fiber on polarization characteristics is investigated using the finite element method. Single-polarization guidance is achieved by using the anisotropy of optical fiber materials, which also ensures high birefringence. The numerical simulation results indicate that there are two single-polarization intervals (1210–1440 nm and 1490–1560 nm), with a maximum bandwidth of up to 230 nm, when the confinement loss difference between the two orthogonal polarizations exceeds two orders of magnitude. Specifically, when the work wavelength is 1550 nm, a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 108 is obtained by optimizing the structure parameters. Additionally, the y-polarization fundamental mode (YPFM) can be well confined in the fiber center with a low confinement loss of 0.04 dB/m, while the x-polarization fundamental mode (XPFM) has a huge confinement loss larger than 4.65 dB/m due to the coupling with the tube mode. The proposed single-polarization solid-core anti-resonant fiber has a huge potential in applications such as laser systems, fiber-optic gyroscopes, and optical fiber communications.

Résumé :
Pulsar radio emission shows remarkably rich, but complex behavior in both intensity and polarization when considered on a pulse-to-pulse basis. A large number of pulses, when averaged together, tend to approach & define stable shapes that can be considered as distinct signatures of different pulsars. Such average profiles have shapes ranging from that describable as a simple one-component profile to those suggesting as many as 9 components. The components are understood as resulting from an average of many, often narrower, intities — the subpulses —that appear within the longitude range of a given component. The pulse components are thusformedand represent statistically an intensity-weighted average pattern of the radiation received as a function of longitude. The profile mode changes recognized in many pulsars suggest that the emission profile of a given pulsar may have two quasi-stable states, with one (primary) state more probable/brighter than the other (secondary) state. There are also (often associated) polarization modes that represent polarization states that are orthogonal to each other. The complex nature of orthogonaljumpsobserved in polarization position-angle sweeps may be attributable to possible superposition of two profile/polarization modes with orthogonal polarizations.

The detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory opens a new era to use gravitational waves to test alternative theories of gravity. We investigate the polarizations of gravitational waves in f (R) gravity and Horndeski theory, both containing scalar modes. These theories predict that in addition to the familiar + and × polarizations, there are transverse breathing and longitudinal polarizations excited by the massive scalar mode and the new polarization is a single mixed state. It would be very difficult to detect the longitudinal polarization by interferometers, while pulsar timing array may be the better tool to detect the longitudinal polarization.

Résumé :
This paper explores the capability of high frequency microwave measurements at vertical and horizontal polarizations in detecting snowfall over land. Surface in-situ meteorological data were collected over Conterminous US during two winter seasons in 2014–2015 and 2015–2016. Statistical analysis of the in-situ data, matched with Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) measurements on board NASA/JAXA Core Observatory, showed that the polarization difference at 166 GHz had the highest correlation to measured snowfall rate compared to the single channel high frequency measurements and the polarization difference at 89 GHz. A logistic regression model applied to the match-up data, using the polarization difference at 166 and 89 GHz as predictors, yielded an overall snowfall classification rate of 69.0%, with the largest contribution coming from the polarization difference at 166 GHz. Logistic regression using the four single channels as predictors (at 89 and 166 GHz, horizontal and vertical polarizations) further indicated that the horizontal polarization at 166 GHz was the most important contributor. An overall classification rate of 73% was achieved by including the 183.31 ± 3 GHz and 183.31 ± 7 GHz vertical polarization channels in the final logistic regression model. Evaluation of the final algorithm demonstrated skill in snowfall detection of two significant events.

Résumé :
Single-photon as well as polarization-correlated photon pair emission from a single semiconductor quantum dots is demonstrated. Single photon generation and single photon-pair generation with little uncorrelated multiphoton emission and the feasibility of media conversion of the quantum states between photon polarization and electron spin are fundamental functions for quantum information applications. Mutual media conversion for the angular momentum between photon polarization and electron spin is also achieved with high fidelity via positively charged exciton state without external magnetic field. This is a clear indication that the coupling of photon polarizations and electron spins keeps secured during whole processes before photon emission. Possibility of a metal-embedded structure is demonstrated with the observation of drastic enhancement of excitation and/or collection efficiency of luminescence as well as clear antibunching of photons generated from a quantum dot.

Résumé :
Single-pass soil moisture retrieval has been a key objective of Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) for the last decade. Achieving this goal will allow small satellites with GNSS-R payloads to perform such retrievals at high temporal resolutions. Properly modeling the soil surface roughness is key to providing high-quality soil moisture estimations. In the present work, the Physical Optics and Geometric Optics models of the Kirchhoff Approximation are implemented to the coherent and incoherent components of the reflectometry measurements collected by the SMAP radar receiver (SMAP-Reflectometry or SMAP-R). Two surface roughness products are retrieved and compared for a single-polarization approach, critical for single-polarization GNSS-R instruments that target soil moisture retrievals. Then, a polarization decoupling model is implemented for a dual-polarization retrieval approach, where the ratio between two orthogonal polarizations is evaluated to estimate soil moisture. Differences between linear and circular polarization ratios are evaluated using this decoupling parameter, and the theoretical soil moisture error with varying decoupling parameters is analyzed. Our results show a 1-sigma soil moisture error of 0.08 cm3/cm3 for the dual-polarization case for a fixed polarization decoupling value used for the whole Earth, and a 2-sigma error of 0.08 cm3/cm3 when the measured reflectivity and the VOD are used to estimate the polarization decoupling parameter.

Résumé :
AbstractWe present an approach for polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) that solely requires a modification of the light source, a buffered swept source laser. For this purpose a single-mode fiber-based Fourier domain mode locked laser is extended by fourfold buffering with manual fiber polarization controllers to emit alternating sweep polarizations, while the polarization contrast calibration is realized by a high-speed polarimeter. As the introduced setup utilizes standard scanning and detection units, the proposed method is a promising way to enhance various swept source OCT systems by polarization sensitive imaging. Preliminary measurements of a human finger nail with different polarization contrasts demonstrate the feasibility of the concept.

Résumé :
Modern wireless networks, stationary terrestrial and satellite systems use many modern technologies to increase communication channels information capacity. They save limited frequency resources. In satellite communications the polarization signal processing is applied to reuse the allocated frequency bands. Usage of circularly polarized electromagnetic waves, which transmit useful signals, reduces fading effects and eliminates disadvantages introduced by multipath propagation interferences. In this case the distortion levels for signals with an odd number of electromagnetic waves reflections in the receiving antenna systems will be reduced down to the thresholds of their cross-polarization isolation. Besides, in the case of orthogonal polarizations usage, the achieved information capacity of the applied wireless communication channel multiples almost by the factor of two. The type of polarization of the used electromagnetic wave strongly determinates the peculiarities of the process of its propagation in the space or transmission line. Polarization signal processing is frequently carried out in horn feed systems of the reflector antennas. Such feed networks and systems allow to transmit and receive signals with several kinds of polarization at the same time. The fundamental element of dual circular polarization antenna feed networks is a waveguide polarization duplexer. The phase, isolation and matching characteristics of a polarization converter strongly influence on the functionality and polarization discrimination possibilities of the entire reflector antenna system. Therefore, the development and optimization of the characteristics of waveguide polarizers for satellite communication antennas is a crucial technical problem, which must be solved by fast and accurate methods. The comparison of electromagnetic performance of waveguide polarizers with sizes obtained using a fast single-mode technique and by more accurate trust region optimization method is carried out in this research. The results for differential phase shift, level of voltage standing wave ratio, ellipticity coefficient and cross-polarization discrimination are shown and discussed.

We present a mechanism to produce indistinguishable single-photon pulses on demand from a single atom-optical cavity system. We use sequences of two laser pulses of alternate circular polarizations at the two Raman transitions of a four-level atom. They allow the production of the same cavity-mode photons without repumping of the atom between photon generations. Photons that are emitted from the cavity with near-unity efficiency in well-defined temporal modes, feature the same polarization, frequency and identical shapes, controlled by the laser fields. The second order correlation function reveals the single-photon nature of the proposed source. A realistic setup for the experimental implementation is presented.

Abstract We propose a novel twist-microstructured fiber design to achieve single-circular polarization single-mode (SCP-SM) transmission. It consists of a round core and three lobes of microstructured regions in cladding. The local modes existing in the microstructured regions make a large coupling coefficient between the fundamental guiding mode and the leaky cladding mode possible. The orthogonal random direction method is used to find the optimal structural parameters, and numerical results show that the bandwidth of efficient circular polarization selectivity for the proposed SCP-SM fiber is approximately 155 nm, ranging from 1400 nm to 1550 nm. The influence of varying the parameters of the microstructured cladding on the single circular polarization performance is also discussed.

Résumé :
Aims. Lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) are an attractive technology for millimeter-wave observations that require large arrays of extremely low-noise detectors. We designed, fabricated and characterized 64-element (128 LEKID) arrays of horn-coupled, dual-polarization LEKIDs optimized for ground-based CMB polarimetry. Our devices are sensitive to two orthogonal polarizations in a single spectral band centered on 150 GHz with Δν∕ν = 0.2. The 65 × 65 mm square arrays are designed to be tiled into the focal plane of an optical system. We demonstrate the viability of these dual-polarization LEKIDs with laboratory measurements. Methods. The LEKID modules are tested with an FPGA-based readout system in a sub-kelvin cryostat that uses a two-stage adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. The devices are characterized using a blackbody and a millimeter-wave source. The polarization properties are measured with a cryogenic stepped half-wave plate. We measure the resonator parameters and the detector sensitivity, noise spectrum, dynamic range, and polarization response. Results. The resonators have internal quality factors approaching 1 × 106. The detectors have uniform response between orthogonal polarizations and a large dynamic range. The detectors are photon-noise limited above 1 pW of absorbed power. The noise-equivalent temperatures under a 3.4 K blackbody load are <100 μK √s. The polarization fractions of detectors sensitive to orthogonal polarizations are >80%. The entire array is multiplexed on a single readout line, demonstrating a multiplexing factor of 128. The array and readout meet the requirements for 4 arrays to be read out simultaneously for a multiplexing factor of 512. Conclusions. This laboratory study demonstrates the first dual-polarization LEKID array optimized specifically for CMB polarimetry and shows the readiness of the detectors for on-sky observations.

The interest in crop inventory through the use of microwave sensors is on the rise owing to need for accurate crop forecast and the availability of multi polarization data. Till recently, the temporal amplitude data has been used for crop discrimination as well as acreage estimation. With the availability of dual and quadpol data, the differential response of crop geometry at various crop growth stages to various polarizations is being exploited for discrimination and classification of crops. An attempt has been made in the current study with RISAT1 and Radarsat2 C-band single, dual, fully and hybrid polarimetric data for crop inventory. The single date hybrid polarimetric data gave comparable results to the three date single polarization data as well as with the single date fully polarimetric data for crops like rice and cotton.

Résumé :
Empirical algorithms have become the mainstream of significant wave height (SWH) retrieval from synthetic aperture radar (SAR). But the plentiful features from multi-polarizations make the selection of input for the empirical model a problem. Therefore, the XGBoost models are developed and evaluated for SWH retrieval from polarimetric Gaofen-3 wave mode imagettes using the SAR features of different polarization combinations, and then the importance of each feature on the models is further discussed. The results show that the reliability of SWH retrieval models is independently confirmed based on the collocations of the SAR-buoy and SAR-altimeter. Moreover, the combined-polarization models achieve better performance than single-polarizations. In addition, the importance of different features to the different polarization models for SWH inversion is not the same. For example, the normalized radar cross section (NRCS), cutoff wavelength (λc), and incident angle (θ) have more decisive contributions to the models than other features, while peak wavelength (λp) and the peak direction (φ) have almost no contribution. Besides, NRCS of cross-polarization has a more substantial effect, and the λc of hybrid polarization has a stronger one than other polarization models.

We performed the first principle calculation to investigate the polarization behavior of BaTiO3(BTO)/PbTiO3(PTO) superlattices with a period-5 superlattice model. The results show that when BTO proportion increases, values of c/a increase and polarizations decrease. In BPT superlattices, polarization in each local layer keeps a constant value, indicating that short-period BPT superlattices can be approximately considered as a single ferroelectric material. Moreover, from analysis of the electrostatic model, we know the directions of internal electric fields in BTO and PTO layers are opposite. Internal electric field in PTO layer leads to polarization loss in this layer, but polarization in BTO layer is enhanced by internal electric field.
