Résumé :
By one-step mixed-solvent mediated approach, we have prepared fluorescent organic core–shell nanoparticles with an oligomer (1) derived from the Schiff base condensation reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol and o-phenylenediamine at room temperature. The core and shell structures are generated by the same oligomer (1) featuring the aggregation structure in core different from that in shell. The radial packing factor distribution of oligomer cluster depending on the solvent interaction in the time of nucleation is mainly responsible for the single component core–shell formation. Different morphologies of the core–shell nanospheres (CSNS) and core–shell nanohemispheres (CSNHS) were generated simply by changing the concentration of 1 in chloroform-methanol mixed solvent (1:2). We observed that fluorescent emission from those core–shell nanoparticles is intense whereas as-synthesized oligomer (1) itself is non-fluorescent in dilute solution. The enhanced emission in the core–shell form with more than 50 times increase in fluorescent quantum yield vis-à-vis 1 is a remarkable feature of the study. As UV absorption spectra of nanoparticles are blue-shifted relative to their properties in solution, the observed strong emission in the solid state makes the oligomer an outstanding exception to a well-established rule based on the molecular exciton model. The core–shell nanoparticles have been characterized by FE-SEM, TEM, XRD, nanosecond (ns) time-resolved fluorescence dynamics, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The longer fluorescence lifetimes (τ) of core–shell nanoparticles (3.50 ns and 3.52 ns for CSNS and CSNHS respectively) than 1 as-synthesized (1.28 ns) implies that the formation of the nanoparticles restricts the rotation and vibration of the groups in the molecules. The factor that induces fluorescent enhancement of nanoparticles is mainly ascribed to the increase of radiative rate constant (kr) and simultaneous decrease of nonradiative rate constant (knr).

Résumé :
The influence of various types of nanoparticle fillers with the same diameter of 20 nm were separately incorporated into a single component impregnating resin based on a polyesterimide (PEI) matrix and its subsequent changes in complex relative permittivity were studied. In this paper, nanoparticles of Al2O3 and ZnO were dispersed into PEI (with 0.5 and 1 wt.%) to prepare nanocomposite polymer. Dielectric frequency spectroscopy was used to measure the dependence of the real and imaginary parts of complex relative permittivity within the frequency range of 1 mHz to 1 MHz at a temperature range from +20 °C to +120 °C. The presence of weight concentration of nanoparticles in the PEI resin has an impact on the segmental dynamics of the polymer chain and changed the charge distribution in the given system. The changes detected in the 1H NMR spectra confirm that dispersed nanoparticles in PEI lead to the formation of loose structures, which results in higher polymer chain mobility. A shift of the local relaxation peaks, corresponding to the α-relaxation process, and higher mobility of the polymer chains in the spectra of imaginary permittivity of the investigated nanocomposites was observed.

Résumé :
This work reports on photothermal lens spectra of silver nanoparticles of different dimensions in the spectral region of 370–730 nm performed using an arc-lamp-based photothermal spectrophotometer. We show that the photothermal and extinction cross-section spectra of the samples are similar for nanoparticles of reduced dimensions where scattering effects are small. The results differ substantially for nanoparticles of a diameter larger than 30 nm for which scattering becomes relevant. We demonstrate that the photothermal spectrum corresponds to the absorption component of the particle’s extinction. Photothermal spectra show a clear picture of the plasmonic peaks of the nanoparticle even in the presence of high scattering. By subtracting the photothermal component from the total extinction, we extract the scattering cross-section spectra of the nanoparticles. The technique allows determination of the absorption and scattering components of the extinction providing a better understanding of the particle’s optical properties. The results agree well with the Mie approximation, which is valid for a single spherical nanoparticle. We discuss and demonstrate the application of the method to characterize particles of arbitrary shape and dimensions.

The combination of iron oxide and gold in a single nanoparticle results in both magnetic and plasmonic properties that can stimulate novel applications in bio-sensing, medical imaging, or therapeutics. Microwave assisted heating allows the fabrication of multi-component, multi-functional nanostructures by promoting selective heating at desired sites. Recently, we reported a microwave-assisted polyol route yielding gold nanotriangles decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles. Here, we present an in-depth microstructural and compositional characterization of the system using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). A method to remove the iron oxide nanoparticles from the gold nanocrystals and some insights on crystal nucleation and growth mechanisms are also provided.

Résumé :
Phase change memory is based on changes in the optical, electrical or other properties of materials during phase transitions, e.g. an amorphous to crystalline transition. Currently existing and potential applications of this memory are primarily based on multicomponent alloys of metals and semiconductors. However single-component nanoparticles including Si ones are also of interest as promising nanosized memory cells. The potential for developing this type of memory cells is confirmed by the fact that the optical absorption index of bulk amorphous silicon is of the same order of magnitude as that of crystalline silicon. Certainly this phenomenon can hardly be implemented with a single nanoparticle the size of which is within light wavelength. Using molecular dynamics and the Stillinger-Weber potential we have studied the regularities of melting and the conditions of crystallization of silicon nanoparticles containing within 105 atoms. We have shown that cooling of nanosized silicon drops at a 0.2 TK/s rate or higher rates causes their amorphous transition whereas single-component nanosized metallic drops crystallize in molecular dynamics experiments even at a 1 TK/s rate. Further heating of amorphous silicon nanoparticles containing above 5 ∙ 104 atoms causes their crystallization in a specific temperature range from 1300 to 1400 K. We have concluded that there is a possibility of developing phase change memory cells on the basis of the above phase transitions. An amorphous transition of a nanoparticle can be achieved by its melting and further cooling to room temperature at a 0.2 TK/s rate whereas a crystalline transition, by its heating to 1300–1400 K at a 0.2 TK/s rate followed by cooling. Results of molecular dynamics experiments suggest there is a minimum silicon nanoparticle size for which the development of phase change memory cells becomes theoretically impossible at a given temperature change rate. For a 0.2 TK/s temperature change rate this minimum size is 12.4 nm (number of atoms approx. 5 ∙ 104).

Résumé :
Phase-change memory is based on a change in the optical, electrical, or other properties of a substance during a phase transition, for example, transition from the amorphous to the crystalline state. Already realized and potential applications of such memory are associated with the use for this purpose of multicomponent alloys based on metals, semiconductors. However, single-component nanoparticles, including Si ones, are also of interest in view of the prospects for their use as nanoscale memory units. In particular, possibility of creating such memory units is confirmed by the fact that the bulk phase of the amorphous silicon has an optical absorption coefficient which is by an order of magnitude greater than that of the crystalline, although, it is difficult to release this effect for an individual nanoparticle whose size does not exceed the wavelength of light. In this work, using molecular dynamics (MD) and the Stillinger-Weber potential, we studied the laws of melting and conditions of crystallization for silicon nanoparticles containing up to 100,000 atoms. It has been shown that upon cooling a silicon nanodroplet at a rate of 0.2 TK/s and higher rates, its transition into the amorphous state takes place, whereas single-component metal nanodroplets crystallize even at cooling rates of 1 TK/s. Upon subsequent heating of amorphous silicon nanoparticles containing more than 50,000 atoms, they crystallize in the definite temperature range 1300—1400 K. It is concluded that it is principally possible to create memory units based on the above phase transitions. The transition of a nanoparticle to the amorphous state is achieved by its melting and subsequent cooling to the room temperature at a rate of 0.2 TK/s, and switching to the crystalline state is achieved by heating it to 1300—1400 K at a rate of 0.2 TK/s and subsequent cooling. On the basis of results of MD experiments, a conclusion is made that there exist a minimal size of silicon nanoparticles, for which producing memory units based on the change of the phase state, is not possible. It was found that for the temperature change rate of 0.2 TK/s, the minimal size in question 12.4 nm that corresponds to 50,000 atoms.

Résumé :
Advances in nanoscale self-assembly have enabled the formation of complex nanoscale architectures. However, the development of self-assembly strategies toward bottom-up nanofabrication is impeded by challenges in revealing these structures volumetrically at the single-component level and with elemental sensitivity. Leveraging advances in nano-focused hard x-rays, DNA-programmable nanoparticle assembly, and nanoscale inorganic templating, we demonstrate nondestructive three-dimensional imaging of complexly organized nanoparticles and multimaterial frameworks. In a three-dimensional lattice with a size of 2 micrometers, we determined the positions of about 10,000 individual nanoparticles with 7-nanometer resolution, and identified arrangements of assembly motifs and a resulting multimaterial framework with elemental sensitivity. The real-space reconstruction permits direct three-dimensional imaging of lattices, which reveals their imperfections and interfaces and also clarifies the relationship between lattices and assembly motifs.

Résumé :
Magnetron sputtering is a well-known technique that is commonly used for the deposition of thin compact films. However, as was shown in the 1990s, when sputtering is performed at pressures high enough to trigger volume nucleation/condensation of the supersaturated vapor generated by the magnetron, various kinds of nanoparticles may also be produced. This finding gave rise to the rapid development of magnetron-based gas aggregation sources. Such systems were successfully used for the production of single material nanoparticles from metals, metal oxides, and plasma polymers. In addition, the growing interest in multi-component heterogeneous nanoparticles has led to the design of novel systems for the gas-phase synthesis of such nanomaterials, including metal/plasma polymer nanoparticles. In this featured article, we briefly summarized the principles of the basis of gas-phase nanoparticles production and highlighted recent progress made in the field of the fabrication of multi-component nanoparticles. We then introduced a gas aggregation source of plasma polymer nanoparticles that utilized radio frequency magnetron sputtering of a polymeric target with an emphasis on the key features of this kind of source. Finally, we presented and discussed three strategies suitable for the generation of metal/plasma polymer multi-core@shell or core-satellite nanoparticles: the use of composite targets, a multi-magnetron approach, and in-flight coating of plasma polymer nanoparticles by metal.

Résumé :
Abstract The borehole heat exchanger (BHE) is a critical component to improve energy efficiency and decreasing environmental impact of ground-source heat pump systems. The lower thermal resistance of the BHE results in the better thermal performance and/or in the lower required borehole length. In the present study, effects of employing a nanofluid suspension as a heat carrier fluid on the borehole thermal resistance are examined. A 3D transient finite element code is adopted to evaluate thermal comportment of nanofluids with various concentrations in single U-tube borehole heat exchangers and to compare their performance with the conventional circuit fluid. The results show, in presence of nanoparticles, the borehole thermal resistance is reduced to some extent and the BHE renders a better thermal performance. It is also revealed that employing nanoparticle fractions between 0.5% and 2 % are advantageous in order to have an optimal decrement percentage of the thermal resistance.

Résumé :
Effective converse piezoelectric coefficient (d33,eff) mapping of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers with ceramic BaTiO3 nanoparticle inclusions obtained by electrospinning was carried out by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) in a peculiar dynamic mode, namely constant-excitation frequency-modulation (CE-FM), particularly suitable for the analysis of compliant materials. Mapping of single nanocomposite fibers was carried out to demonstrate the ability of CE-FM-PFM to investigate the nanostructure of semicrystalline polymers well above their glass transition temperature, such as PVDF, by revealing the distribution of piezoelectric activity of the nanofiber, as well as of the embedded nanoparticles employed. A decreased piezoelectric activity at the nanoparticle site compared to the polymeric fiber was found. This evidence can be rationalized in terms of a tradeoff between the dielectric constants and piezoelectric coefficients of the component materials, as well as on the mutual orientation of polar axes.

Résumé :
The research was carried out to investigate the synthesis of silver nano particles. The silver nano particles have wide tremendous application in the therapeutics, antimicrobials, diagnostics, catalysis, micro-electronics and high sensitivity biomolecular detection. Silver nano particles grow in a single-step method, at room temperature, and with no addition of external energy. The silver nanoparticles were synthesized from silver nitrate aqueous solution through a simple, eco-friendly and cost effective course using the leaf broth of the Oscimum sanctum, Azadirachtaindica and LawsoniaInermis (kadvi mehndi), therefore calling it green synthesis. The Synthesized AgNP was confirmed by sampling the aqueous component at different time intervals and the absorption maxima was scanned by UV-Vis spectrometry and Particle Size Distribution (PSD). Based on PSD, the particles were further characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope. Synthesized AgNP was confirmed at 531,540and 543 nm. Among the total percentage of size distribution, D-50 value, which is 50% size distribution, was taken into consideration, where the size of the nanoparticle was established to 0.135µm. Further research is going on with reference to the synthesized nanoparticles.

Résumé :
Oleic acid capped copper nanoparticles were prepared by the solventless thermolysis of single-source precursor, cupric oleate. OA-capped Cu nanoparticles were characterized by means of FT-IR, TEM, XRD and TGA. Results show that OA-capped Cu nanoparticles with an average diameter of about 40 nm, which are able to prevent water adsorption, oxidation and are capable of being dispersed stably in organic solvents or mineral oil. This approach offers a great deal of facilitating their production without the need of protection by inert gases or sealed containers. In this process, only the preparation condition temperature has an obvious effect on the size and component of the product. OA-capped Cu nanoparticles as an additive in PAO10 perform good anti-wear and friction-reduction properties. As the additive concentration reach to 0.5 wt. %, the wear scar diameter can be reduced by 18 % and the friction coefficient can be reduced by 13 % as compared to pure PAO10.

Résumé :
In the present study, Ni / Fe nanoparticles were synthesized using bound micelles as a template and 3, 3′, 4, 4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) as the target contaminant. The dual bound micelles, which are composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were found to be superior to single-component templates for the dispersion of metallic ions and thus directed the synthesis of Ni / Fe nanoparticles with improved properties. After characterization of the different nanoparticles, it was found that the sustained effectiveness of PVP–SDS bound micelles afforded specialized structures with two gradations of Ni / Fe nanoparticles, correlating to more active sites and higher activity. The improved activity of the Ni / Fe nanoparticles was finally exhibited by the higher ratio (99.3% in 72 h) and efficiency (k obs of 0.0674 h-1) of PCB77 removal. Herein, the utilization of PVP–SDS bound micelles is proposed as a template for the improvement of iron-based nanoparticles and correlated research.

Résumé :
Recent findings have proved the benefits of Pioglitazone (PGZ) against atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes. Since the systematic and controllable release of this drug is of significant importance, encapsulation of this drug in nanoparticles (NPs) can minimize uncontrolled issues. In this context, drug delivery approaches based on several poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles have been rising in popularity due to their promising capabilities. However, a fully reliable and reproducible synthetic methodology is still lacking. In this work, we present a rational optimization of the most critical formulation parameters for the production of PGZ-loaded PLGA NPs by the single emulsification-solvent evaporation or nanoprecipitation methods. We examined the influence of several variables (e.g., component concentrations, phases ratio, injection flux rate) on the synthesis of the PGZ-NPs. In addition, a comparison of these synthetic methodologies in terms of nanoparticle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential (ζp), drug loading (DL%), entrapment efficiency (EE%), and stability is offered. According to the higher entrapment efficiency content, enhanced storage time and suitable particle size, the nanoprecipitation approach appears to be the simplest, most rapid and most reliable synthetic pathway for these drug nanocarriers, and we demonstrated a very slow drug release in PBS for the best formulation obtained by this synthesis.

Résumé :
Almost impurity-free, defect-free and dense barium titanate (BaTiO3) fine particles with various sizes from 20 to 430 nm were prepared by the 2-step thermal decomposition method and post-heating treatment. The crystal structures of these particles in the range from -150 to 150 °C were investigated using synchrotron radiation XRD measurement. The crystal structure refinement using Rietveld method revealed that BaTiO3 particles with the size over 40 nm were composed of two parts; (a) cubic shell and (b) core with successive phase transitions. The crystal structure of the core component can be related to the dielectric properties at room temperature. Moreover, it was revealed that the phase transition behavior of BaTiO3 nanoparticles was different from that of the BaTiO3 single crystal.

Résumé :
The properties of nanomaterials usually depend on their microstructures, the same material of different microstructures could be used for various applications. However, most devices could only synthesize a single microstructure, so it is meaningful that the different microstructures were synthesized by one method. In our study, electrospinning was applied to fabricate ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles. In this approach, Zn(Ac)/PVP composite fibers of different component ratio were synthesized by electrospinning method which was subsequently calcined and formed ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles. The microstructure, chemical composition and gas sensing were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and WS-60A gas sensing measurement system. Résumé :
The aim of this work was to study the applicability of infrared spectroscopy combined with machine learning techniques to evaluate the uptake and distribution of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in Cicer arietinum L. (chickpea). Obtained spectral data revealed that the uptake of AuNPs and CNTs by the C. arietinum seedlings’ root resulted in the accumulation of AuNPs and CNTs at stem and leaf parts, which consequently led to the heterogeneous distribution of nanoparticles. principal component analysis and support vector machine classification were applied to assess its usefulness for evaluating the results obtained using the attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy method of C. arietinum plant grown at different conditions. Specific wavenumbers that could classify the different nanoparticle constituents of C. arietinum plant extracts according to their ATR-FTIR spectra were identified within three specific regions: 450–503 cm−1, 750–870 cm−1, and 1022–1218 cm−1, based on larger PCA loadings of C. arietinum ATR-FTIR spectra with distinct spectral differences between samples of interest. The current work paves a path to the future fabrication strategies for AuNPs and single-walled CNTs via plant-based routes and highlights the diversity of the applications of these materials in bio-nanotechnology. These results indicate the importance of family-plant selection, choice of methods, and pathways for the efficient biomolecule delivery, drug cargo, and optimal conditions in the wide spectrum of bioapplications.

In this work, single-phase nanostructured NdFe1−xCoxO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) perovskite materials were obtained by annealing stoichiochemistry mixtures of their component hydroxides at 750 °C for 60 min. The partial substitution of Fe by Co in the NdFeO3 crystal lattice leads to significant changes in the structural characteristics, and as a consequence, also alters both the magnetic and optical properties of the resulting perovskites. The low optical band gap (Eg = 2.06 ÷ 1.46 eV) and high coercivity (Hc = 136.76 ÷ 416.06 Oe) give Co-doped NdFeO3 nanoparticles a huge advantage for application in both photocatalysis and hard magnetic devices.

Résumé :
Abstract Achieving an efficient and inexpensive bactericidal effect is a key point for the design of antibacterial agent. Recent advances have proved molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as a promising platform for antimicrobial applications, while the combination of metal nanoparticle would promote the antibacterial efficiency. Nevertheless, the dispersivity, cheapness and safety of metal nanoparticle loaded on MoS2 raised some concerns. In this paper, we successfully realized a uniform decoration of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) on surface of MoS2 nanosheets, and the size of CuNPs could be controlled below 5 nm. Under 5 min irradiation of 660 nm visible light, the synthesized CuNPs/MoS2 composite demonstrated superior antibacterial performances (almost 100% bacterial killed) towards both Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus over the single component (Cu or MoS2), while the bactericidal effect could last for at least 6 h. The synergism of photodynamic generated hydroxyl radical (·OH), oxidative stress without reactive oxygen species production and the release of Cu ions was considered as the mechanism for the antibacterial properties of CuNPs/MoS2. Our findings provided new insights into the development of two-dimensional antibacterial nanomaterials of high cost performance.

Résumé :
Nanofluids are engineered colloids made of a base fluid and nanoparticles (1-100nm). Nanofluids have higher thermal conductivity and single-phase heat transfer coefficients than their base fluids. In particular, the heat transfer coefficient increases appear to go beyond the mere thermal-conductivity effect, and cannot be predicted by traditional pure-fluid correlations such as Dittus-Boelter’s. In the nanofluid literature this behavior is generally attributed to thermal dispersion and intensified turbulence, brought about by nanoparticle motion. To test the validity of this assumption, we have considered seven slip mechanisms that can produce a relative velocity between the nanoparticles and the base fluid. These are inertia, Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, diffusiophoresis, Magnus effect, fluid drainage, and gravity. We concluded that, of these seven, only Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis are important slip mechanisms in nanofluids. Based on this finding, we developed a two-component four-equation nonhomogeneous equilibrium model for mass, momentum, and heat transport in nanofluids. A nondimensional analysis of the equations suggests that energy transfer by nanoparticle dispersion is negligible, and thus cannot explain the abnormal heat transfer coefficient increases. Furthermore, a comparison of the nanoparticle and turbulent eddy time and length scales clearly indicates that the nanoparticles move homogeneously with the fluid in the presence of turbulent eddies, so an effect on turbulence intensity is also doubtful. Thus, we propose an alternative explanation for the abnormal heat transfer coefficient increases: the nanofluid properties may vary significantly within the boundary layer because of the effect of the temperature gradient and thermophoresis. For a heated fluid, these effects can result in a significant decrease of viscosity within the boundary layer, thus leading to heat transfer enhancement. A correlation structure that captures these effects is proposed.

Résumé :
SnO2/TiO2composite nanoparticles have been synthesized in a single-step by feeding evaporated precursor mixtures into an atmospheric pressure diffusion flame. Particles with controlled Ti: Sn ratios were produced at various flow rates of oxygen, and the resulting powders were characterized by BET surface area analysis, XRD, TEM, EDAX and UV-Vis spectroscopy. For the lowest concentration (3.4 mol %) ofSnO2employed in this study anatase phase ofTiO2is stabilized, while segregation ofSnO2is seen at medium (6.9 to 12.4 mol %) and high concentrations (20.3 mol %). Though the equilibrium phase diagram predicts complete solubility of one oxide in another at all compositions, segregation ofSnO2phase is observed which is explained by the usage of diffusion flame in the present study. The particle formation mechanism ofSnO2/TiO2composites is proposed basing on the single component aerosol formation. Photocatalytic activity of the composite particles is tested for the degradation of methylene blue and is compared with pureTiO2synthesized under similar conditions. Improved photocatalytic activity of the composite particles is attributed to the stabilized anatase phase and better charge separation due to the coupling ofTiO2andSnO2within the composite nanoparticles.
