Résumé :
We show that the Armenter and Koren model's firm-product-country results rely on the assumption that export shipment size is independent of firm size, and this assumption is contradicted by the data. When actual shipment sizes are used in the balls-and-bins model, it cannot reproduce the data on single product/single country exporters. Beyond just showing that the shipment size assumption matters to balls-and-bins outcomes, our results highlight the important fact that shipment size is an economic decision, co-determined with other export choices. For this reason, we argue that a balls-and-bins model cannot be a purely statistical benchmark model. (JEL F11, F14, O13, O19, Q37)

Résumé :
The Proteaceae are often said to be a 'relict Gondwanan group' because they are disjunctly distributed over several southern continental blocks. Such distributions are shown by 12 different taxa above species-level in the family, which is thus potentially useful in cladistic studies of Southern Hemisphere biogeography. We have produced well-corroborated cladograms for the subtribe Embothriinae and its sister-taxon, Lomatia. These taxa have almost identical distributions within eastern Australia and western South America. Distributions of most species of Embothriinae are relatively narrow and we have used them to define areas of endemism for analysis. We analysed the biogeographic relationships of these areas under Assumptions 1 and 2 of Nelson and Platnick and Assumption 0 of Zandee and Roos, using R.D.M. Page's program COMPONENT. When analysed separately, Embothriinae and Lomatia share no area-cladograms under any assumption. The similarity between the two suites of area-cladograms, obtained in turn under each assumption, was assessed in terms of the symmetric difference of triplets. Under Assumptions 0 and 2 at least, the similarity between area-cladograms of Lomatia and Ernbothriinae appeared higher than would be expected due to chance. We took this as a fair indication that the two groups share congruent area-patterns, which justified analysing them as a single group. When analysed as a whole, the {Lomatia + Ernbothriinae} clade yielded a single most parsimonious cladogram under the 'items of error' parsimony criterion (Assumption 1) and the same cladogram plus several others under the 'Wagner' parsimony criterion (Assumption 0). The single cladogram on which these analyses agree seems to be consistent with conventional geological theories, assuming a history of vicariance events caused by continental break-up and climatic change.

Résumé :
Detection-efficiency mismatch is a common problem in practical quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. Current security proofs of QKD with detection-efficiency mismatch rely either on the assumption of the single-photon light source on the sender side or on the assumption of the single-photon input of the receiver side. These assumptions impose restrictions on the class of possible eavesdropping strategies. Here we present a rigorous security proof without these assumptions and, thus, solve this important problem and prove the security of QKD with detection-efficiency mismatch against general attacks (in the asymptotic regime). In particular, we adapt the decoy state method to the case of detection-efficiency mismatch.

Résumé :
Time varying frictional force and torque are one of the main exciting sources of vibration in helical gears. This paper presents an approach to determine the friction force and torque in involute helical gears considering nonuniform load distribution along contact lines. An analytical load distribution model is employed and extended to obtain the load per unit of length along contact lines. Friction force and torque models under nonuniform assumption are derived. Comparisons of the determined friction force and torque with the results from uniform assumption are made. In addition, the differences between constant friction coefficient and varying coefficient are revealed. Moreover, two typical design cases of helical gears are studied. Results show that the fluctuations of friction force and torque under uniform assumption are more significant than those under nonuniform assumption in sample I for a single tooth, but less significant for the sum of those of the three teeth, while in sample II, the fluctuations under uniform assumption are less significant than those under nonuniform assumption. The friction coefficient induced difference is negligible compared with the difference induced by load distribution assumptions.

Abstract Yield trials of named cultivars and advanced breeding lines are used frequently by breeders to make final determinations concerning the naming and release of breeding lines. Often a single-row per line replicate is planted and harvested due to constraints of time, space, and/or planting materials. An implicit assumption is that there is no effect on an entry by adjacent rows. The assumption was tested using data from 7 years of sweet potato yield trials. Data were not analyzed for the 1977 crop due to unavailability of the plot plan. In 1980, no yield trial was conducted and in 1982 sequential harvests of random portions of each row rendered analyses for competition inappropriate.

Abstract Among the single-Doppler radar wind analysis methods, the velocity–azimuth display (VAD), velocity–azimuth process (VAP), and uniform-wind (UW) methods are widely used because of their simplicity. This paper shows that the VAD, VAP, and UW methods can all be derived from the same relationship based on the azimuthal uniform-wind assumption. Using this assumption, an integrating VAP (IVAP) method is developed that can provide a smoother wind field than the VAP and UW methods and a higher resolution than the VAD method. Using the IVAP technique, the wind fields associated with a heavy rainfall case in Shanghai, China, are retrieved and compared with those from surface observations and wind-profiler data.

Abstract. The past three decades have seen an unprecedented increase in empirical research on women’s sexual response. In this review, we critically examine current controversies and assumptions associated with the nature of women’s sexual arousal and desire. We focus specifically on four assumptions: (1) the assumption that women should be aroused by stimuli that align with their stated preferences, (2) the assumption that women’s physiological and self-reported arousal should perfectly align, (3) the assumption that sexual desire precedes sexual arousal, and (4) the assumption that a single pharmaceutical compound will adequately restore women’s sexual response to her level of satisfaction. Engaging a gendered psychological framework for conceptualizing women’s sexuality, we emphasize the need for models of women’s sexual response to be sensitive to the sexed biological processes and gendered psychosocial factors that contribute to a woman’s unique sexual experience.

A method using fourier transform and logarithm for the retrieval of the single scattering electron energy loss spectrum from the experimental multiple data has been described and used previously. However, the uniqueness of this method is proved only under an additional assumption that no energy gain processes occur as the incident electron pass through the specimen. This proof is adopted in the later review papers. In this paper we prove the uniqueness without such an assumption, although in comparison with the energy loss processes, the energy gain processes usually have negligible differential cross sections, provided the relaxation times for the excitation inside the specimen are short enough with respect to the amount of energy loss. Also we shall compare deconvolution methods for the low loss region.

Résumé :
Estimation of the association between haplotypes and disease from a case-control study is considered. Assuming a single “disease haplotype" leads to the increased risk, attention focusses on the relative risks associated with a single copy, or two copies of the disease haplotype, relative to individuals with no copies. In this setting, case frequencies of the haplotype pairs are in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) only if the combined influence of the two copies of the disease haplotype on risk is multiplicative. Thus, imputation cannot rely on the assumption of HWE for cases. A method is presented for obtaining estimates of the relative risks, making use of the EM algorithm and the assumption of HWE only for controls. The method accounts for the additional variation in the estimates due to the imputation of expected frequencies of haplotype pairs from ambiguous genotypes. A simulation study shows that the resulting confidence intervals have nominal coverage, and that the methods based on the assumption of HWE for both cases and controls can lead to bias.

Résumé :
Savannas are tropical formations in which trees and grasses coexist. According to the "honeycomb rippling model", inter-tree competition leads to an effect of trees growing and dying due to competition, which, at fine spatial scale, would resemble honeycomb rippling. The model predicts that the taller the trees, the higher the inter-tree distances and the evenness of inter-tree distances. The model had been corroborated in arid savannas, in what appears to be caused by uneven distribution of rains, but had not yet been tested in seasonal savannas, such as the cerrado, which could be caused by the irregular occurrence of fire.A basic assumption of the model is that strong inter-tree competition affects growth (estimated by height) and mortality (estimated by inter-tree distances). As a first step towards testing this model in the cerrado, we tested this assumption in a single cerrado patch in southeastern Brazil. We placed 80 quadrats, each one with 25 m², in which we sampled all shrubs and trees. For each individual, we measured its height and the distance to its nearest neighbour - the inter-tree distance. We did not find correlations between tree height and both inter-tree distances and evenness of inter-tree distances, refuting the honeycomb rippling model. Inter-tree distances were spatially autocorrelated, but height was not. According to our results, the basic assumption of the model does not apply to seasonal savannas. If, in arid savannas, rainfall events are rare and unpredictable, in seasonal savannas, the rainy season is well-defined and rainfall is considerable. We found horizontal structuring in the community, which may be due to soil nutrient heterogeneity. The absence of vertical structuring suggests that competition for light among adult trees is not as important as competition for nutrients in the soil. We tested the basic assumption of the model in a single patch and at a single moment. To test the model effectively, we suggest this assumption to be tested in many patches over time.

Résumé :
A calculation is made of the turbulent transport terms (third moments) that occur in the Reynolds stress equation for buoyant and/or sheared fluids. This calculation is based on neglect of a two-time fourth-order cumulant – a weaker approximation than neglect of the usual single-time fourth-order cumulant. The previously used eddy-damping assumption for single point moments is avoided. This assumption is then examined critically. Comparison is afterward made between the turbulent transport terms derived here and those derived previously by the eddy-damping method, and between the respective derivations. Also the dissipation of third moments is calculated. The calculation is formally limited to mean quantities which vary but slowly in space and time, and to small anisotropy.

The classical theory of depth filtration of aerosol particles in fibrous structures is based on the assumption of existing single fibre efficiency, which may be used to recalculate the overall efficiency of entire filter. Using “classical theory” of filtration one may introduce some errors, leading finally to a discrepancy between theory and experiment. There are several reasons for inappropriate estimation of the single fibre efficiency: i) neglecting of shortrange interactions, ii) separation of inertial and Brownian effects, ii) perfect adhesion of particles to the fibre, iv) assumption of perfect mixing of aerosol particles in the gas stream, v) assumption of negligible effect of the presence of neighbouring fibres and vi) assumption of perpendicular orientation of homogenous fibres in the filtration structure. Generally speaking, “classical theory” of filtration was used for characterization of the steady - state filtration process (filtration in a clean filter, at the beginning of the process) without deeper investigation of the influence of the nternal structure of the filter on its performance. The aim of this review is to outline and discuss the progress of deep-bed filtration modelling from the use of simple empirical correlations to advanced techniques of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Digital Fluid Dynamics.

Résumé :
Whenever the data acquisition is restricted to line surveys rather than areal surveys, seismic processing is necessarily in two dimensions. In this paper it is argued that two‐dimensional (2-D) processing is preferably applied after transforming the point source responses into line source responses. The effect of this transformation is a correction of the amplitudes in the data. For single‐component acoustic data as well as for multicomponent elastic data a line source response is nothing but a superposition of point source responses. Hence, in principle a line source response can be synthesized by integrating point source responses along the desired line source axis. In practice, however, this integration cannot be carried out due to the incompleteness of the data. It is shown that the integration along the source axis can be replaced by an integration along the receiver axis. The underlying assumption is that the wavefields exhibit a certain type of cylindrical symmetry. For horizontally layered acoustic and elastic media this assumption is fully satisfied. For 2-D inhomogeneous media this assumption is approximately satisfied, provided the data are sorted in CMP gathers. Having transformed the point source responses into line source responses, the results may be considered as “true amplitude” 2-D data. Hence, proceeding with existing 2-D seismic processing techniques is then justified.

Résumé :
Supported metal nanoparticles form the basis of heterogeneous catalysts. Above a certain nanoparticle size, it is generally assumed that adsorbates bond in an identical fashion as on a semiinfinite crystal. This assumption has allowed the database on metal single crystals accumulated over the past 40 years to be used to model heterogeneous catalysts. Using a surface science approach to CO adsorption on supported Pd nanoparticles, we show that this assumption may be flawed. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, isolated to one nanoparticle, show that CO bonds upright on the nanoparticle top facets as expected from single-crystal data. However, the CO lateral registry differs from the single crystal. Our calculations indicate that this is caused by the strain on the nanoparticle, induced by carpet growth across the substrate step edges. This strain also weakens the CO–metal bond, which will reduce the energy barrier for catalytic reactions, including CO oxidation.

Résumé :
Purpose: To identify the impact of package size on an individual’s use of serving size information. The hypothesis was that participants would make more serving size assumption errors on a nutrition facts table (NFT) interpretation task when assessing packages that appear as a single serving but contain multiple servings, compared with products that appear as a multi-serving and contain multiple servings. Methods: Sixty participants were randomized into 1 of 3 conditions (n = 20 each); products that appeared as a single serving and contain a single serving (SSSS), products that appeared as a single serving and contain multiple servings (SSMS), and products that both appear as a multi-serving and contain multiple servings (MSMS). All 3 conditions were tested on a NFT interpretation task while participants were being presented food items that were appropriate to their given condition. Results: Participants in the SSMS (9.55 ± 7.78) condition made significantly more serving size assumption errors than the SSSS (0.00 ± 0.00; P < 0.001) and MSMS (0.40 ± 0.75; P < 0.001) conditions. Conclusions: Participants did not address serving size information when they perceived a product to be a single serving. This resulted in people misinterpreting nutritional and caloric content of foods that were single unit foods with multiple servings.

Résumé :
The efficient interaction between single photons and single matter objects in free space is of key importance for quantum technologies. An experimental setup for testing this possibility involves single two-level ion trapped at the focus of a parabolic metallic mirror. We study the conditions for the setup, under which the assumption about the free-space mode structure of the radiation field in the vicinity of the atom is justified. In our analysis we apply vectorial properties of light by including the polarization degree of freedom. We look for possible changes in the spontaneous emission rate of the atom resulting from the presence of the parabolic boundary conditions.
