Résumé :
SUMMARYThis paper presents a new approach for simplifying dynamic equations of motion of robot manipulators by using a nondimensionalization scheme. With this approach the dynamic analysis is done in a nondimensional space. That is, it is required to establish a dimensionless coordinate system in which the dynamic equations of motion of manipulators are formulated. The characteristic parameters of the manipulators are then defined by choosing proper physical quantities as basic units for nondimensionalization. Within the nondimensional space the Lagrange method is applied to the manipulator to obtain a set of general dimensionless equations of motion. This dimensionless dynamic formulation of manipulators leads to an easier way to simplify the dynamic formulation by neglecting insignificant terms using the order of magnitude comparison. The dimensionless dynamic model and its simplified version of PUMA 560 robot are implemented using the proposed approach. It is found that the simplified dynamic model greatly reduces the computation burden of the inverse dynamics. Simulation results also show that the simplified model is extremely accurate. This implies that the proposed nondimensional simplification emethod is reliable.

Résumé :
Research of the pile-soil interaction effect is a complicated issue in civil engineering. Using the principle of soil dynamics and structural dynamics, a simplified computational method for computing the lateral dynamic impedance of single pile embedded in layered non-homogeneous subsoil is established based on a certain assumptions. Both non-homogeneity of soil strata and softening effect of soil layer around pile during vibration as well as separation of pile-soil interface are simultaneously taken into account in the proposed computational method. The characteristics of the frequency-dependency of lateral dynamic stiffness and damping of pile are reproduced. It is shown through the comparative study on a numerical example that the numerical results of dynamic impedance of pile computed by the proposed method are relatively rational and can well agree with the computational and experimental results currently available.

Résumé :
Abstract The contribution deals with the simplified dynamic analysis of surface grinding machine spindle node. Dynamic analysis is based on the use of the transfer matrix method, which is essentially a matrix form of method of initial parameters. The advantage of the described method, despite the seemingly complex mathematical apparatus, is primarily, that it does not require for solve the problem of costly commercial software using finite element method. All calculations can be made for example in MS Excel, which is advantageous especially in the initial stages of constructing of spindle node for the rapid assessment of the suitability its design. After detailing the entire structure of spindle node is then also necessary to perform the refined dynamic analysis in the environment of FEM, which it requires the necessary skills and experience and it is therefore economically difficult. Résumé :
A method is presented for dynamic model updating of on-load tap changer (OLTC). Based on a sensitivity-based optimization method, the initial simplified finite element (FE) model of OLTC component is updated using the analytical results of the FE super-model. The objective of model updating is to reduce the frequency difference between the simplified FE model and the super-model, and to make the simplified model accurately represent dynamic characteristics of the super-model. The updated simplified models can be further used in the modeling and analysis of the whole OLTC model. The results, taking the base of OLTC as example, indicate that the dynamic behavior of the updated simplified model match well with that of the super-model. Subsequently, the dynamic behavior of OLTC assembled with the updated parts is further predicted by modal analysis. The presented method improves the calculation efficiency, as well as accuracy, which has broad application prospects for dynamic prediction of complex structures in engineering.

Résumé :
A reliable nonlinear dynamic model of the quadrotor is presented. The nonlinear dynamic model includes actuator dynamic and aerodynamic effect. Since the rotors run near a constant hovering speed, the dynamic model is simplified at hovering operating point. Based on the simplified nonlinear dynamic model, the PID controllers with feedback linearization and feedforward control are proposed using the backstepping method. These controllers are used to control both the attitude and position of the quadrotor. A fully custom quadrotor is developed to verify the correctness of the dynamic model and control algorithms. The attitude of the quadrotor is measured by inertia measurement unit (IMU). The position of the quadrotor in a GPS-denied environment, especially indoor environment, is estimated from the downward camera and ultrasonic sensor measurements. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed dynamic model and control algorithms are demonstrated by experimental results. It is shown that the vehicle achieves robust vision-based hovering and moving target tracking control.

Résumé :
Purpose The design of compliant towers in deep waters is greatly affected by their dynamic response to wave loads as well as by the geometrical and material nonlinearities that appear. In general, a nonlinear time history dynamic analysis is the most appropriate one to be applied to capture the exact response of the structure under wave loading. However, this type of analysis is complex and time-consuming. This paper aims to develop a simplified methodology, which can adequately approximate the maximum response yielded by a dynamic analysis by means of a static analysis. Design/methodology/approach Various types of time history dynamic analysis are first applied on a detailed structural model, ranging from linear to fully nonlinear, that are used as reference solutions. In the sequel, a simplified analysis model is formulated, capable of reproducing the response of the entire structure with significantly reduced computational cost. In the next stage, this model is used to obtain the linear and nonlinear response spectra of the structure. Finally, these spectra are used to formulate a simplified design approach, based on equivalent static loads. Findings This simplified design approach produces good results in cases that the response is mainly governed by the first eigenmode, which is the case when compliant towers are considered. Originality/value The present paper borrows ideas from the area of earthquake engineering, where simplified methodologies can be used for the design of a certain class of structures. However, the development of a simplified methodology for the approximation of the dynamic behavior of offshore structures under wave loading is a much more complex problem, which, to the authors’ knowledge, has not been addressed till now.

Résumé :
Based on vibration theory, simplified analytical methods for computing the first natural vibration frequency and mode of transmission steel tower are investigated, which has improved the currently applied method. The method for frequency includes parameters of lumped mass such as tower head or cross arm, and can show the influence of section of tower main leg. The method for mode considers tower height, root space and head width. Examples of some typical transmission steel towers show that the dynamic characteristics computed with the simplified analytical methods are close to those of the Finite Element Method. Then the methods given in this paper are superior to the present methods used in engineering and have a better generality, which are suitable to different tower type structures.

This paper describes an innovative analytic/numerical method for modeling steering systems for automotive applications. Starting from a detailed literature analysis and pushed by vehicle manufacturers’ needs, a simplified steering dynamic model, characterized by few parameters, has been identified. It guarantees both the replication of the dynamic behavior of real systems, generally represented through more complex multibody models, and the reduction of the simulation time of the entire vehicle system, making it suitable for dedicated numerical computing environments, such as the, so-called, explicit multibody codes. Moreover, particular emphasis has been place on the correct evaluation of the influence of friction on steering system dynamics.

Résumé :
The article presents the simplified implementation of alternative load path method based on the energy balance approach. This method should be used to check the global resistance of a damaged structural system after the occurrence of an accidental event. Basic assumptions of simplified analytical models for modelling resistance of horizontal ties in a damaged structural system, taking into account the membrane (chain) effects, were presented. An approach to modelling the dynamic resistance of a damaged structural system based on the energy balance method is described. Calculated dependencies for checking the robustness of a prefabricated multi-storey building with hollow-core slabs after the loss of the central column are proposed and considered using an example. On the considered example, a comparison of the required tie sections area with the dynamic resistance designed using the energy balance method (EBM) and according to the current standards, and a statistical assessment of the reliability of the load-bearing capacity models are carried out. In the end, a brief algorithm for the simplified calculation of the dynamic resistance of a damaged structural system is proposed.

Résumé :
A simplified method is presented in this paper for the estimation of forces at the base of telecommunication towers mounted on building rooftops due to seismic excitation. Although some codes and standards propose simplified methods for the evaluation of base shear forces for towers founded on ground, no method yet exists for the evaluation of overturning moments. The proposed simplified method is based on numerical simulations using truncated modal superposition, which is widely used for seismic analysis of linear structures. The method requires the prediction of input seismic acceleration at the building–tower interface, the definition of an acceleration profile along the building-mounted tower, and the determination or evaluation of the mass distribution of the tower along its height. The method was developed on the basis of detailed dynamic analyses of three existing towers assumed to be mounted separately on three buildings. It was found that the method yields conservative results, especially for the overturning moments.Key words: self-supporting towers, earthquake, horizontal excitation, dynamic analysis, acceleration, modal superposition.

Résumé :
In terms of the physical mechanism and features of the dynamic soil-structure interaction during earthquake excitation, a simplified procedure for evaluating the earthquake-induced differential settlement of buildings on natural subsoil is presented. It takes into account of the irregularity of incident seismic waves and the different distribution of vertical dynamic stresses caused by seismic loading under the two sides of building base. Instead of FEM the simplified method based on the layer-wise summation method is used to calculate the settlement of the subsoil with building presence. The cone model proposed by Meek and Wolf is adopted to calculate the dynamic stress distribution under the building. The residual strain potential model of soil under irregular loading and the modulus-softening model are employed to calculate the permanent deformation of subsoil. The simplified method can consider the combined effect of soil, structure and seismic wave reasonably and describe the developing process of differential settlement. The results of large shaking table tests are consistent with the corresponding calculated results.

Résumé :
Wood stoves are widely used in dwellings for space heating, however transient heat output and relatively large heat emission might cause problems with over-heating in new well-insulated buildings. This paper introduces a simplified power sizing method for the building integration of wood stoves which was compared to dynamic building performance simulations. The analysis showed that on average the simplified method predicted the temperature increase in the living room similarly to dynamic simulations. However, in some cases the difference was up to 60%, which is significant when carried forward to selecting the optimal stove heat capacity. Precise use of the simplified power sizing method requires accurate knowledge of the building structures and effective thermal capacity of the room with the wood stove. Typically, this kind of knowledge is unavailable when selecting a wood stove and the method needs to be developed further. These investigations confirmed that more knowledge of the occupant behaviour and preference on thermal comfort is needed.

Résumé :
In this paper, we investigate a design method for a cable-driven snake arm maintainer (SAM) and its dynamics modelling. A SAM can provide redundant degrees of freedom and high structural stiffness, as well as high load capacity and a simplified structure ideal for various narrow and extreme working environments, such as nuclear power plants. However, their serial-parallel configuration and cable drive system make the dynamics of a SAM strongly coupled, which is not conducive to accurate control. In this paper, we propose an equivalent dynamics modelling method for the strongly coupled dynamic characteristics of each joint cable. The cable traction dynamics are forcibly decoupled using force analysis and joint torque equivalent transformation. Then, the forcibly equivalent dynamic model is obtained based on traditional series robot dynamic modelling methods (Lagrangian method, etc.). To verify the correctness of the equivalent dynamics, a simple model-based controller is established. In addition, a SAM prototype is produced to collect joint angles and cable forces at different trajectories. Finally, the results of the equivalent dynamics control simulation and the prototype tests demonstrate the validity of the SAM structural design and the equivalent dynamics model.

Résumé :
The dynamic increasing energy test has been widely used in pile load tests in Brazil in recent years. However, the ultimate strength of the single-foundation system is not mobilized in most of the tests because of various factors. In some cases, the equipment available cannot attain the necessary kinetic energy, or the structural element presents initial imperfections/ruptures. In this study, the authors present a method for extrapolating the mobilized static resistance vs. maximum displacement curve, which is obtained using the dynamic increasing energy test (DIET). Using the force and velocity signals collected by the PDA (Pile Driving Analyzer) system, it is possible to calculate the resistance and displacement by applying the Simplified CASE Method. An extrapolation method, the Simplified Extrapolation Method of the CASE Method (SEM-CASE), is presented based on the results of twenty-one precast concrete pile load tests that have been carried out in different soils. The estimated values of the ultimate complementary energy and ultimate strength were very close to the measured values in the presented load tests.

Résumé :
The front-end loader is an indispensable machine for the off-road construction equipment industry. It is a classic example of a working machine with complex interactions between its subsystems (hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical). Dynamic models of the full-scale vehicle coupled with event-based operator models are currently used to help quantify the overall system performance, efficiency, and operability. However, these models are complex and not always necessary to characterize the response of individual subsystems. There is great value added to the design process — especially in prototyping of new vehicle platforms — in development of simpler models that can quickly and accurately define first-order measures of system loads and performance. This paper presents a subscale dynamic model, which isolates the boom and bucket manipulator systems of the front-end loader for the purpose of design load characterization. The model includes state equations governing the hydraulic dynamics across the control valves and in the cylinders, as well as soil—tool interaction loads (passive earth loads) at the bucket cutting edge. The governing equations of motion for the multi-rigid body model of the bucket linkage are developed using Kane's method. The proposed model is intended to accelerate the structural design and analysis of the boom and bucket linkage subsystems and may yield useful information for optimization purposes. The output from the dynamic simulation is compared with the field test data of the machine.

Résumé :
Vertical vibration of identical simply supported bridges traversed by a train with uniformly distributed mass is investigated in this paper. The train with passengers onboard is simplified as a uniformly distributed two-layer spring-mass system as well as the bridges are simplified as consecutive simply supported Euler-Bernoulli beams. To analyze dynamic responses of the train and the bridges, the dynamic governing equation of the system is obtained and solved by a specific linear interpolating method and numerical integral methods. The result graphs indicate that dynamic responses of both beam and train carriage increase along with the mass ratio of bogie to car.

Résumé :
In the design of deepwater foundation for bridges, the interaction between water and the structure especially under earthquake motions should be addressed. This paper presents a practical simplified method to analyze deepwater pile group foundation to determine its dynamic characteristics by combining approximate analytical solutions with the finite element method. The applicability of this proposed method is shown in a case study of a nine-pile foundation. Compared with those from complete numerical method, the analysis results from this simplified method are in agreement when the pile cap is not submerged in water. Furthermore when ignoring the vertical hydrodynamic added mass of the pile cap, the vertical vibration mode results are greatly affected, but not for other non-vertical vibration modes. This simplified method is also used in the study of the influence of water on the dynamic characteristics. The deeper the water is, the more obvious the impact of water is, particularly for the pile cap lateral bending modes, and there appears no evident difference for the pile lateral bending modes, on which water effect is stronger than that on pile cap lateral bending mode.

Résumé :
There are promising prospects on the way to widespread use of AI, as well as problems that need to be overcome to adapt AI&ML technologies in industries. The paper systematizes the AI sections and calculates the dynamics of changes in the number of scientific articles in machine learning sections according to Google Scholar. The method of data acquisition and calculation of dynamic indicators of changes in publication activity is described: growth rate (D1) and acceleration of growth (D2) of scientific publications. Analysis of publication activity, in particular, showed a high interest in modern transformer models, the development of datasets for some industries, and a sharp increase in interest in methods of explainable machine learning. Relatively small research domains are receiving increasing attention, as evidenced by the negative correlation between the number of articles and D1 and D2 scores. The results show that, despite the limitations of the method, it is possible to (1) identify fast-growing areas of research regardless of the number of articles, and (2) predict publication activity in the short term with satisfactory accuracy for practice (the average prediction error for the year ahead is 6%, with a standard deviation of 7%). This paper presents results for more than 400 search queries related to classified research areas and the application of machine learning models to industries. The proposed method evaluates the dynamics of growth and the decline of scientific domains associated with certain key terms. It does not require access to large bibliometric archives and allows to relatively quickly obtain quantitative estimates of dynamic indicators.

Résumé :
A rigid-flexible coupling dynamic model is established for the grinding roller system of an Horomill. Two coordinates are chosen to describe the grinding roller motion, namely the linear displacement of the roller at the center of mass and its rotation around the centroid on the applied plane of the grinding forces. The grinding forces applied on the roller are simplified to be a force and a torque, acting respectively on the direction of two coordinates. The frequency response function (FRF) matrices, with the two grinding force components as input and the vibration acceleration responses of two measuring points on the roller as output, are obtained respectively by using multibody dynamics computational software. The auto-PSD and cross-PSD of the vibration response on two measuring points are known. An inverse pseudo excitation method (IPEM) is then used for solving the grinding dynamic load spectrum. The obtained load spectrum would be helpful for the Horomill dynamic design and the fatigue calculation.

Résumé :
Progressive collapse refers to a phenomenon in which a local damage of a primary structural element leads to the failure of partial or whole structural system. To investigate the progressive collapse of structures, nonlinear dynamic procedure leads to more accurate results than static procedures. Nonlinear dynamic procedure is very complicated and the evaluation or validation of its results may be very time-consuming. Therefore using simplified methods are very important. This paper presents a simplified and accurate analysis procedure for progressive collapse analysis of steel structures. The proposed method results show to have good agreement with nonlinear dynamic analysis results. Also, the capacity curve obtained from dividing the accumulated area under the nonlinear static load-displacement curve by the corresponding displacement of the column-removed point is used to predict the progressive collapse resistance of the column-removed structure.

Résumé :
In this paper, a simplified analytical method is developed for the axial harmonic response of totally and partially embedded pile groups in homogeneous and layered soil deposits. Based on BDWF model, finite element sub-structure method is used to setup the dynamic model of cap-pile groups which can precisely simulate kinetic interaction and inertial interaction. A comprehensive parameter study focuses on the influence of caps’ elastic modulus and mass density on pile groups’ dynamic response, and then points out the limition of rigid cap in practical design. An approximate solution is finally presented for the internal forces distributed on pile heads due to pile-to-pile interaction. The solution of above approach was compared with that of traditional simplified model (rigid and massless cap solution) in simulating an in-site experiment and dynamics response of partially embedded pile groups for offshore wind farm.

Résumé :
A simplified method is presented for evaluating the dynamic properties of structures considering the effects of soil–pile–structure interaction (SPSI). A substructure method is used to establish the model of the soil–pile–structure system which is characterized by several dimensionless parameters. The shear-type structure is modeled as a generalized single-degree-of-freedom system using the virtual displacement principle, and the impedance functions of the floating pile-foundation are formulated by the thin-layer method. A number of coupled systems are analyzed and the results are used as the statistical base to obtain the mathematical relations between the dimensionless parameters and the dynamic properties. The dynamic properties solved by the equations are compared with those of the field experiment, shaking-table test and other analytical methods. The results indicated that the proposed equations are of high accuracy and can be used to obtain the dynamic properties of piles directly without performing complex analysis.

Résumé :
A simplified static method for estimating the member forces in self-supporting lattice telecommunication towers due to both horizontal and vertical earthquake excitations is presented in this paper. The method is based on the modal superposition technique and the response spectrum approach, which are widely used for seismic analysis of linear structures. It is assumed that the lowest three flexural modes of vibration are sufficient to correctly estimate the tower's response to horizontal excitation, while only the lowest axial mode is sufficient to capture the response to vertical excitation. An acceleration profile along the height of the tower is defined using estimates of the lowest three flexural modes or the lowest axial mode, as appropriate, together with the spectral acceleration values corresponding to the associated natural periods. After the mass of the tower is calculated and lumped at the leg joints, a set of equivalent static lateral or vertical loads can be determined by simply multiplying the mass profile by the acceleration profile. The tower is then analyzed statically under the effect of these loads to evaluate the member forces. This procedure was developed on the basis of detailed dynamic analysis of ten existing three-legged self-supporting telecommunication towers with height range of 30-120 m. The maximum differences in member forces obtained with the proposed method and the detailed seismic analysis are of the order of ±25% in the extreme cases, with an average difference of ±7%. The results obtained for two towers with heights of 66 and 83 m are presented in this paper to demonstrate the accuracy and practicality of the proposed method.Key words: self-supporting tower, earthquake, vertical excitation, dynamic analysis.
