Walton, Saige. Cinema's Baroque Flesh. NL Amsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789089649515.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In Cinema's Baroque Flesh, Saige Walton draws on the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty to argue for a distinct aesthetic category of film and a unique cinema of the senses: baroque cinema. Combining media archaeological work with art history, phenomenology, and film studies, the book offers close analyses of a range of historic baroque artworks and films, including Caché, Strange Days, the films of Buster Keaton, and many more. Walton pursues previously unexplored connections between film, the baroque, and the body, opening up new avenues of embodied film theory that can make room for structure, signification, and thought, as well as the aesthetics of sensation.

Résumé :
This chapter examines poet W. C. Williams' and director Mack Sennett's respective investments in the 1920s in destructive enterprises, comically excessive violence amounting in both to a repudiation of the values that inform economic rationalism. In the former's The Great American Novel (1923) critical reflexivity and collage experimentation constitute acts of resistance to narrative signification. In the latter, the symbolic dismantling of the Model T—as exhibited in his films Lizzies of the Field (1924) and Super-Hooper-Dyne Lizzies (1925)— serves as a gesture of defiance aimed at Fordism. Both the motion pictures and the literary text indicated their ethical opposition to the priorities informing economic rationalism by integrating the Model T into decidedly destructive undertakings.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This book explores an idea of music, exemplified by the work of Debussy, in dialogue with a parallel movement in French literary and philosophical thought. Its central thesis is that modern music and philosophy converge on the same set of problems but from opposite directions. Through close readings of selected musical works it argues that Debussy’s rethinking of the relation between sound and grammar anticipates and complements the defining problem of modern philosophy – the gap between language and a sensory relation to the world, between abstract systems of signification and embodied experience. Although its principal focus is the music of Debussy, it ranges widely across French music from Fauré and Ravel to Dutilleux, Boulez, Grisey, Murail, and Saariaho. It ranges similarly through a set of French writers and philosophers, from Mallarmé and Proust to Merleau-Ponty, Jankélévitch, Derrida, Lyotard, and Nancy. Frequent reference is made to the visual arts (Rodin, Monet, Bonnard, Cezanne, Matisse). It explores the idea that this current of French music, running through the long twentieth century from Debussy to the present, makes sense in a manner that affords a different way of knowing the world, foregrounding sound over syntax, and sense over signification.

Résumé :
The novel and the theater are two forms of fiction: in both cases, it is a matter of creating an imaginary world, and making characters, whose story constitutes what is called the plot, enter into this world. In order for the impact of the work to surpass that of simple entertainment, the story must also have a signification. Through carefully constructed lies, the book, like the play, strives to communicate a general human truth, but they do not rely on the same devices, and they do not seek the same type of truth....

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A Blaze of Light in Every Word presents a conceptual model for analyzing vocal delivery in popular song recordings focused on three overlapping areas of inquiry: pitch, prosody, and quality. The domain of pitch, which refers to listeners’ perceptions of frequency, considers range, tessitura, intonation, and registration. Prosody, the pacing and flow of delivery, comprises phrasing, metric placement, motility, embellishment, and consonantal articulation. Qualitative elements include timbre, phonation, onset, resonance, clarity, paralinguistic effects, and loudness. Intersecting all three domains is the area of technological mediation, which considers how external technologies, such as layering, overdubbing, pitch modification, recording transmission, compression, reverb, spatial placement, delay, and other electronic effects, impact voice in recorded music. Though the book focuses primarily on the sonic and material aspects of vocal delivery, it situates these aspects among broader cultural, philosophical, and anthropological approaches to voice with the goal to better understand the relationship between sonic content and its signification. Drawing upon transcription and spectrographic analysis as the primary means of representation, as well as modes of analysis, this book features in-depth analyses of a wide array of popular song recordings spanning genres from indie rock to hip-hop to death metal, develops analytical tools for understanding how individual dimensions make singing voices both complex and unique, and synthesizes how multiple aspects interact to better understand the multidimensionality of singing voices.

Résumé :
This chapter traces how classical music works can create a sense of time and place in video games. Beginning with a case study of how music establishes the eighteenth-century setting of Assassin’s Creed III, it then explores both how games build on frameworks of musical signification established in early cinema. It identifies games, such as Punch-Out!!, which use classical works to indicate a specific nation, as well as those that do the same for chronological setting, such as Versailles 1685. The chapter culminates in a study of games in which the music is misleading, suggesting the “wrong” time or place.

The various volumes print original essays, reviews, critical discussions, and editions of texts. The aim is to contribute to an understanding of the full range of themes and problems in all aspects of the field, from late antiquity into the Renaissance, and extending over the Jewish, Islamic, and Christian traditions. Volume 8 ranges widely over this terrain, including Caleb Cohoe on Augustine on happiness; Susan Brower-Toland on Augustine on perception; Mary Sirridge on Seneca’s influence on Anselm; Taneli Kukkonen on al-Ghazālī’s meditations in comparison with later traditions; David Cory on how Aquinas’s soul moves the body; Michael Szlachta on Thomas of Sutton’s theory of will; Nathaniel Bulthuis on Walter Burley and opaque signification; and Jenny Pelletier on Ockham’s theory of ownership.

Résumé :
Horror cinema grants bodies and images a precarious hold on sense and order: from the zombie’s gory disintegration to the vampire’s absent reflection and from the shaky camerawork of ‘found footage’ horror to the spectacle of shattering glass in the Italian giallo. Addressing classic horror movies alongside popular and innovative contemporary works, Visceral Screens shows how they have rendered the human form as a type of ‘image-body’, mediated by optical effects, chromatic shifts, glitches and audiovisual fragmentation. The question of signification is central to this metaphorical exchange, since horror frequently pushes both bodies and media to the limits of their expressive capacity. Conducting their own anatomies of the screen, cutting across bodies and media alike, horror films revel in the breakdown of frames, patterns and figures, exposing the seams between matter and meaning.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
During the period of the Enlightenment, the word ‘home’ could refer to a specific and defined physical living space, the location of domestic life, and a concept related to ideas of roots, origins, and retreat. The transformations that the Enlightenment encouraged created the circumstances for the concept of home to change and develop in the following three ways. First to influence homemaking were the literary and cultural manifestations that included issues around attitudes to education, social order and disorder, sensibility, and sexuality. Secondly, were the roles of visual and material culture of the home that demonstrated themselves through print, portraiture, literature, objects and products, and dress and fashion. Thirdly, were the industrial and sociological aspects that included concepts of luxury, progress, trade and technology, consumption, domesticity, and the notions of public and private spaces within a home. The chapters in this volume therefore discuss and reflect upon issues relating to the home through a range of approaches. Enlightenment homes are examined in terms of signification and meaning; the persons who inhabited them; the physical buildings and their furniture and furnishings; the work undertaken within them; the differing roles of men and women; the nature of hospitality, and the important role of religion in the home. Taken together they give a valuable overview of the manners, customs, and operation of the Enlightenment home.

Résumé :
Chapter 2 offers a brief examination of the notion of tradition and narrativity in structuring discursive preferences and patterns. The chapter explores the creation and consumption of tradition as an intertextual configuration of interpretive selections because I understand texts as malleable, dynamic, and polyvalent. These queries require an explanation of the interpretive tools employed to delineate the intellectual processes that structured Han Kitab hermeneutics. Following this, the chapter maps out the literary networks and communities that established the textual constellation of signification for Han Kitab texts. The chapter investigates translational choices and interpretive structures surrounding the creation of local authoritative textual canons of Islamic works. The remainder of this chapter offers portraits of Wang Daiyu, Liu Zhi, and Ma Dexin. This panorama contextualizes these authors within specific personal histories, intellectual environments, and textual communities in order to situate the genealogy of pilgrimage, scripture, and language in Han Kitab thought.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the dynamic construction of the off-stage space and the ways in which it renders the stage radically incomplete. More specifically, it considers how early modern performance replaces the absolute, sacred, and cosmic space of medieval performance with a newly secularized space of representation that could become fictional in a way that the medieval stage could not. To highlight the moment when the stage is empty and the audience is listening to an off-stage sound effect, the chapter offers a reading of the tragedyThe Insatiate Countess. It shows that the playhouse stage is not an ‘absolute space’, but is irreducibly relational: a space-between, a threshold. It explains how this threshold might work in theatrical practice through an analysis ofRichard III. It also discussesArden of Favershamto demonstrate that the domestic version of ‘within’ has one spatial signification in particular: it is the woman’s place. Finally, it looks at the tiring-house as domestic chamber to illustrate the doctrine that certain things are withdrawn from view because they are forbidden.

Résumé :
Roger Bacon is a remarkable figure for his theory of the sign. According to the new reading hypothesis presented in this article, the whole theory is grounded on the relational nature of the sign. Every sign is involved in two relations: one to the interpreter, the other to the significate, the first being “more essential” than the second. The hypothesis allows for a better understanding of Bacon’s central claim that speakers constantly re-impose words in colloquial practice, as well as of its main technical developments (equivocation and supposition understood as instances of re-imposition, the possibility for a word to lose its signification, its impossibility to signify univocally beings and non-beings). In his whole semantics, Bacon’s focus is not so much on entities (e.g. sounds, traces) as on relations holding between entities. From a comparative point of view, the paper offers considerations on the theological (and mainly Augustinian) background of Bacon’s ideas.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The ancient topic of universals was central to scholastic philosophy, which raised the question of whether universals exist as Platonic forms, as instantiated Aristotelian forms, as concepts abstracted from singular things, or as words that have universal signification. It might be thought that this question lost its importance after the decline of scholasticism in the modern period. However, the fourteen contributions to this volume indicate that the issue of universals retained its vitality in modern philosophy. Modern philosophers in fact were interested in three sets of issues concerning universals: (1) issues concerning the ontological status of universals, (2) issues concerning the psychology of the formation of universal concepts or terms, and (3) issues concerning the value and use of universal concepts or terms in the acquisition of knowledge. Chapters in this volume consider the various forms of “Platonism,” “conceptualism,” and “nominalism” (and distinctive combinations thereof) that emerged from the consideration of such issues in the work of modern philosophers. The volume covers not only the canonical modern figures, namely, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant, but also more neglected figures such as Pierre Gassendi, Pierre-Sylvain Regis, Nicolas Malebranche, Henry More, Ralph Cudworth, and John Norris.
