The analysis of fabrication process parameters and properties of carbon fibers made from naphthalene mesophase pitch was conducted in this thesis. The naphthyl pitch containing 100% mesophase pitch was used as a raw material and extracted to form pitch fibers through a melt spinning machine. These fibers were stabilized with various parameters. The effects of process parameters on the center and the outer structure, the oxygen content, the element distribution and the properties of the stabilized pitch fibers were investigated to find optimal parameters for the stabilization process. The stabilized pitch fibers were then carbonized and graphitized and their radial structure, crystalline patterns and related mechanical properties were evaluated to discuss the effect of process parameters and reaction mechanisms on the fiber’s properties. The results show that after stabilized at 250℃ for 8 h and carbonization or graphitization, the pitch fibers extracted at the melting temperature of 315℃ have better graphitization, heat and electric conductive and mechanical properties. The degree of graphitization of these fibers is 98.8% and their ID/IG from Ramon analysis is 0.34. These fibers also have a resistivity of 1.3 x 10-6 Ω.m, a thermal conductivity of 970 W / mK and a tensile strength of 860 MPa.

In this work, two kinds of Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloys with different chemical compositions (Cu-8wt%Al-10wt%Mn, Cu-8wt%Al-9wt%Mn) were melted by VAR. After homogenized and hot rolled, the specimens were heat-treated by direct-quench or step-quench into oil-bath at 100℃, 150℃and 200℃. Then they were investigated by electrical resistance measurement, hardness test and shape memory recovery test to get their characteristics. Further studies were also conducted by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) in order to get the different phase structures of the alloys. Besides, thermal cycling experiments were used to study the effect of thermal cycling on the Shape Memory Alloy. The results shows that whether under direct-quench or step-quench treatments, both martensites in the two alloys are M18R type, and the extent of monoclinicity is greatly influenced by alloy-type and methods of heat treatment. In Cu-8Al-10Mn alloy, the 150℃ step-quenched specimen has the relatively greatest ordering; while in Cu-8Al-9Mn alloys, it is the direct-quenched one gets the first place. Moreover, when the step-quenched specimen proceeds cycling tests, the hysteretic loop area will get smaller with increasing cycling numbers, which means the shape recovery ability has a decreasing tendency. However, it doesn’t go this way under direct-quench treatment and shape recovery test shows that direct-quenched specimen has better shape memory effect.

In this thesis, we propose a new Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) algorithm that removes involuntary hand movements from the video sequences taken by a camcorder. In contrast to the known DIS techniques in the literature that perform the hand-shake estimation independently on the horizontal and vertical directions, the proposed method further considers the hand shake in the two-dimensional space. Other merits of the proposed DIS methods include: a reduced-complexity multi-resolution motion-estimation method, improved validation criteria for motion vectors, and a saturation-prevention motion correction mechanism. Performance evaluation of the system is conduced based on the perceptual quality and PSNR improvements in conjunction with an H.264 codec. Extensive experimental results substantiate the superiority of the proposed DIS algorithm.

The aim of this work is to prepare a star polystyrene containing gold nanoparticles,(PS)star -AuNPs,via anionic polymerization.The synthesis uses the arm-first method that controls the number of arms of (PS)star by varying the molar ratio of DVB to n-BuLi.Afterwards,we functionalize the living (PS)star by ethylene sulfide(ES).The resulting star polystyrene with thiol terminal groups.(PS)star-SH was then mixed with HAuCl4•3H2O in THF solvent in the presence of the reducing agent, super hydride. Upon the reduction of Au+ to Au atoms, the thiol groups of the polymer molecules were bonded onto the gold surface and a polymeric nanocomposite with well-distribution nanogold particles was thus formed. Compared with the linear counterpart,(PS)linear-AuNP, (PS)star-AuNPs has a better size distribution of gold nanoparticles and prevent more effectively the aggregation of gold nanoparticles. 1H-NMR、13C-NMR、TEM、XPS、TGA、DSC and UV-VIS have bene used to investigate the physical properties of the nanocomposite material.

In this work, twelve bent-shaped molecules based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole cores were successfully synthesized. These bent-shaped molecules possessing nitro, amino or methoxy group and hexoxy or 2-octyloxy tail were firstly applied to extend the blue phase range (BP) in the blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) mixture consisting of host Schiff base mesogen H-EI6 and chiral dopant S811 or ISO(6OBA)2. The results indicate that the bent-shaped molecules with nitro group doped into this BPLC mixture are not beneficial to BP stabilization. When 10.0 wt% ratio of bent-shaped molecule OctBiPhOXDNH2 having amino group and 2-octyloxy tail is doped into this BPLC mixture, the BP range can be extended from 36.0 oC to 47.0 oC and the ending temperature of BP can be decreased from 77.0 oC to 61.0 oC. Interestingly, the broad BP range (57.0 oC) can be extended by doping 10.0 wt% ratio of bent-shaped molecule C6OPhOXDOMe possessing methoxy group and hexoxy tail into this BPLC mixture. When the doping ratio of bent-shaped molecule C6OPhOXDOMe increases up to 12.0 wt%, wide BP range (62.0 oC) can be obtained. The ending temperature of BP with 34.0 oC is almost near room temperature when the doping ratio of bent-shaped molecule C6OPhOXDOMe further increases up to 16.0 wt%. Accordingly, this study offer possible approaches for the use of bent-shaped molecule as dopant diluted with NLCs, which may be used for the future applications of room-temperature eutectic LC mixtures with wide BP ranges.

In this work, the new T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6 with no mesophase was prepared for decreasing the formation temperature of blue phase (BP) in this study. We found the formation temperature of host nematic liquid crystalline (NLC) mixtures utilized in BP could be decreased from 147.0 oC to 87.5 oC by mixing rodlike racemic Schiff base mesogen H-EI6 with 40 wt% ratio of T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6. Notably, when 35 wt% of chiral dopant S811 is added into the NLC mixture consisting of 40 wt% OH-ETI6 and 60 wt% H-EI6, the BP range at room temperature (RT) between 41.0 oC and 15.0 oC could be obtained. Similarly, these trends could be also observed in the NLC mixtures consisting of 60 wt% difluoro substituted Schiff base mesogen H-EI6-F and 40 wt% T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6. The RTBPs (33.0 oC -13.0 oC) also could be induced by adding 35 wt% of chiral dopant S811 into this NLC mixture. Subsequently, monomers (RMs) C6M and TMPTA (3 wt%:2 wt%) were added into the BPLC consisting of H-EI6 blended with 40 wt% T-shaped Schiff base molecule OH-ETI6 and doped with 35 wt% chiral dopant S811 to fill the disclination in 3D cubic lattice of BP and broaden BP range with more than 32.0 oC. Accordingly, this study offers possible approaches for the use of T-shaped Schiff base molecule as host diluted with NLCs, which may be used for the future applications of room-temperature eutectic LC mixtures with wide BP ranges.

The new T-shaped biphenyl molecule C6OBiPhI-T with no mesophase was prepared for decreasing the formation temperature of blue phase (BP) in this study. We found the formation temperature of host nematic liquid crystalline (NLC) mixtures utilized in blue phase (BP) could be decreased from 122.5 ℃ to 60.0 ℃ by mixing rodlike racemic biphenyl mesogen C6OBiPhI-H with 50 wt.% ratio of T-shaped biphenyl molecule C6OBiPhI-T. When 30 wt.% of chiral dopant S811 is added into the equiweight NLC mixture, BP near room temperature (RT) with the range between 30.5 ℃ and 25.0 ℃ could be obtained. Similarly, these trends could be also observed in the NLC mixtures consisting of the equiweight difluoro substituted biphenyl mesogen C6OBiPhI-FF and T-shaped biphenyl molecule C6OBiPhI-T. The RTBPs (32.0 ℃-18.0 ℃) also could be induced by adding 30 wt.% of chiral dopant S811 or 10 wt.% ISO(6OBA)2 into this NLC mixture. On the other hand, reactive monomers (RMs) C6M and TMPTA (3 wt.%:2 wt.%) are added into the BPLCs consisting of C6OBiPhI-FF to fill the disclination in 3D cubic lattice of BP and slightly broaden the BP range from ca. 26 ℃ to 30 ℃. However, BP range shortens to 11 ℃ after BPLCs which are doped with reactive monomers are irradiated in UV light. Notably, broad RTBP range (48.4 ℃ to 16.7 ℃) can be induced when the same ratio of reactive monomers are added into a chiral mixture composed of the host NLC mixtures consisting of 70 wt.% C6OBiPhI-FF and 30 wt.% C6OBiPhI-T, blended with 10 wt.% ISO(6OBA)2. Furthermore, 18 wt.% of commercial NLC 5CB or E7 is blended with the aforementioned chiral mixture, only chiral nematic(N*) phase can be observed without BP due to poor miscibility caused by the difference of molecular structure. It can be concluded that the addition of appropriate ratio of T-shaped biphenyl molecule C6OBiPhI-T into a chiral mixture consisting of rodlike racemic biphenyl mesogens blended with chiral dopant S811 or ISO(6OBA)2 can decrease the formation temperature of BPs and induce RTBPs. Accordingly, this study offers possible approaches for the use of T-shaped biphenyl molecule as host diluted with NLCs, which may be used for the future applications of room-temperature eutectic LC mixtures with wide BP ranges.
