To avoid premature and sensitivity of operator parameters selecting of Standard genetic algorithm (SGA) and simulated annealing genetic algorithm (SAGA), a parallel hybrid genetic algorithm based on multi-group (hybrid GA) is presented. The algorithm combines the ideas of parallel computation, simulated annealing and genetic algorithm, and uses orthogonal test table selecting operator parameters to improve the efficiency and robust of the algorithm. And benchmark example of job shop scheduling problem (JSP) is used to validate the effectiveness of the algorithm. Results show the hybrid genetic algorithm converges quickly with small impact to operator parameters.

Ghrelin is a newly discovered orexigenic peptide originating from the stomach. Circulating ghrelin levels reflect acute and chronic energy balance in humans. However, it is not known whether ghrelin also plays a role in energy homeostasis during fetal life. Forty-one small-for-gestational age (SGA) and 34 appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants were studied in order to determine whether cord blood ghrelin concentrations were different in SGA infants compared with AGA infants and the relationship to anthropometric measurements at delivery. The cord blood ghrelin concentrations of SGA infants (means+/-S.E.M.; 15.20+/-3.08 ng/ml) were significantly greater than of AGA infants (2.19+/-0.24 ng/ml) (P<0.0001). They were negatively correlated with the infants' birth weights (r=-0.481, P<0.0001) and with body mass index values (r=-0.363, P<0.001). The higher ghrelin concentrations were found in female infants (20.42+/-4.55 ng/ml) than in males (7.05+/-2.27 ng/ml) in the SGA group (P=0.042). These data provide the first evidence that cord ghrelin levels of SGA infants are greater than those of AGA infants and it is suggested that ghrelin is also affected by nutritional status in the intrauterine period.

ABSTRACT Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) may be important factors in the control of neonatal growth. We have examined the production, in vitro, of IGFBPs and IGFs by hindlimb skeletal muscle from normal and small-for-gestational age (SGA) neonatal rats. Conditioned medium was collected from muscle strips after incubation at 37 °C for 2 h in Ham's F-12 medium. The conditioned medium was subjected to acid-gel permeation chromatography to separate IGFBPs from IGFs. The binding of 125I-labelled IGF-I to IGFBPs from both control and SGA muscle was displaced equipotently by IGF-I and IGF-II and not at all by insulin. IGFBPs from control and SGA muscles bound IGF-I with comparable affinities (Kd = 0·071 and 0·069 nmol/l respectively). When IGF-II was used as tracer, neither IGF-I nor insulin competed for binding. Western ligand blots of IGFBPs in conditioned media from both control and SGA muscles showed three bands of radioactivity at molecular masses equivalent to 24, 30 and 40 kDa. When the release of IGFBPs by muscle tissue in vitro was quantified by measuring the number of IGF-I binding sites in acid-fractionated medium it was apparent that the muscles from SGA pups secreted significantly more IGFBPs (39·3±7·5 fmol/mg muscle protein per 2 h) than the muscles from control pups (17·8±2·7 fmol/mg protein per 2 h; P < 0·05). In contrast to the IGFBPs, more IGF activity was secreted by the muscles from the control pups (61·1±15·6 fmol/mg muscle protein per 2 h) than the muscles from the SGA pups (12·6±5·8 fmol/mg muscle protein per 2 h; P < 0·05). Analysis of the IGF activity with assays specific for IGF-I and IGF-II showed that both SGA and control muscles secreted predominantly IGF-II with approximately 10% of the total IGF activity measurable as IGF-I. This differential secretion of IGFBPs and IGFs may be associated with the reduced growth potential of the SGA neonate. Journal of Endocrinology (1991) 130, 33–42

ABSTRACT Serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) have been determined by radioimmunoassay in the maternal circulation (n = 91) and in the umbilical artery (n = 56) and vein (n = 90) of man. In both the umbilical artery and vein, the concentration of serum IGF-I showed an inverse correlation with birthweight (P < 0·005 and P < 0·001 respectively); the mean serum IGF-I levels in the small-for-gestational-age (SGA) group were significantly higher than those in average-for-gestational-age (AGA) neonates (P <0·01 and P < 0·001 respectively). However, maternal serum IGF-I showed no association with birthweight and there was no significant difference between the SGA and AGA groups. These observations imply that the production of IGF-I in the maternal and fetal compartments is independent and that there is unlikely to be transfer of IGF-I across the placenta. Serum IGFBP-1 levels in both maternal and umbilical cord blood (artery and vein) showed an inverse relation to birthweight (P <0·001, P<0·005 and P<0·001 respectively). Increased IGFBP-1 levels in the umbilical artery and vein were observed in the SGA group. These findings suggest that IGFBP-1 might inhibit the action of IGF-I in both the maternal and the fetal compartments and that the rise in IGFBP-1 could be a primary factor in retardation of fetal growth. Cellular genetic algorithm (cGA) is a subclass of genetic algorithm (GA) in which the population diversity and exploration are enhanced thanks to the existence of small overlapped neighborhoods. Such a kind of structured algorithms is specially well suited for complex problems. Shop scheduling problem is a kind of problem with practical significance, and it belongs to a combinational optimization problem called NP-hard problem. In this paper we establish the model of job-shop problem (JSP) and solve the job-shop scheduling problem with cGA and traditional genetic algorithms (sGA).From the experimental results and analysis, we find cGA has better search efficiency and convergence performance than sGA.

BACKGROUND: The SGA Model Demonstration tested a coordinated team approach to determine whether a combination of vocational rehabilitation practices improve earnings outcomes of clients who also receive Social Security Disability Insurance. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes Phase II of the development of the intervention. METHODS: Researchers and policy fellows conducted site visits, interviewed personnel from 8 State Vocational Rehabilitation agencies and related partners, drafted a proposed intervention and submitted it for review to a Delphi panel. RESULTS: Delphi ratings supported the proposed intervention as likely leading to improved earnings outcomes and recommended that the SGA Project develop training, technical assistance, and capacity building activities to support implementation. CONCLUSION: The SGA Project invested 2 years developing an intervention by examining administrative data, consulting national experts, interviewing SVRAs directors and more than 100 practitioners across eight SVRAs. Pacing metrics were built into a team approach that included a vocational counselor, work incentives counselor, and a job development/job placement specialist with a business relations focus.

As marginal, the Barents Sea plays a major role in the process of Atlantification, and large seasonal variability in sea ice is observed over the region. Current sea ice concentration and thickness obtained from satellite help one understand the variation in sea ice is seasonal. During summer, the concentration and thickness of sea ice are seen to fall, and during winters, it is seen to rise. In order to understand the difference in these variabilities and to analyse the future state of sea ice, a standard logistic curve model is considered. The standard logistic curve model is applied to sea ice parameters during summer and winter to quantify the sea ice growth and decay processes over the Barents Sea.The model yields predicted values based on the adjustment parameter (b) used.Results show that the predicted sea ice concentration performs well with the satellite sea ice concentration values. The model is run on the timeframe grouped into two, with each set having an average of ten years from 2000-2020. For the decay process, the fitted sea ice concentration decay curves derived from the standard logistic curve model are in good agreement with the observed data for the two timelines, with r2 = 0.88 and 0.87, respectively. Similarly, for the growth process, the relevant fitted decay curves derived from the standard logistic curve model are also in good agreement with the observed data during the above different time periods withr2= 0.80 and 0.78, respectively. Further, the model is implied to sea ice thickness, and the result obtained by the logistic curve model is found to be consistent with the satellite sea ice thickness with r2 = 0.75 for the years 2011–2020. Particularly, both the rapid sea ice increase pattern during the growth process and the remarkable decrease pattern during the decay process are successfully characterized by the corresponding fitted curves. The introduction of calculated adjustment parameters into the model helps in accurately determining the sea ice variables, which brings us closer to conservation tools that mitigate therisks associated with rapid sea ice loss.

Usage of Agile Practices draws the attention to the adoption of these agile methods because of their significant contributions to high software quality and job benefits. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to look at the role of job characteristics in mediating the relations between agile practices; project management (PM), and software development approaches (SDA) and job satisfaction. Sample was 486 professionals working in the companies incorporating agile practices, to whom an online survey was administered during period of September 2021 using the Google Forms platform. Findings affirmed the claims that agile PM and SDA practices made professionals more satisfied with their jobs and this impact has been found further mediated by job characteristics. Results indicated that job characteristics like job autonomy and feedback mediated the agile PM practices and job satisfaction. While agile SDA practices and job satisfaction were explained significantly by all job characteristics i.e., feedback, task significance, skill variety, autonomy, and task identity. This study offers insights into agile approaches in project management and software development. This research reveals beneficial aspects of agile practices that influence job satisfaction in work environment.

AbstractIn an effort to improve the reliability of Arctic sea-ice predictions, an ensemble-based Arctic Ice Ocean Prediction System (ArcIOPS) has been developed to meet operational demands. The system is based on a regional Arctic configuration of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model. A localized error subspace transform ensemble Kalman filter is used to assimilate the weekly merged CryoSat-2 and Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity sea-ice thickness data together with the daily Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) sea-ice concentration data. The weather forecasts from the Global Forecast System of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction drive the sea ice–ocean coupled model. The ensemble mean sea-ice forecasts were used to facilitate the Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition in summer 2017. The forecasted sea-ice concentration is evaluated against AMSR2 and Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder sea-ice concentration data. The forecasted sea-ice thickness is compared to the in-situ observations and the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System. These comparisons show the promising potential of ArcIOPS for operational Arctic sea-ice forecasts. Nevertheless, the forecast bias in the Beaufort Sea calls for a delicate parameter calibration and a better design of the assimilation system.

In this three-part article its authors attempt to discuss one of the most exciting debuts in the Polish cinema of the recent years – Ode to Joy (2005). The first text, corresponding with the first part of the feature, examines the content of Anna Kazejak-Dawid’s etude entitled Silesia (Śląsk). Grzegorz Nadgrodkiewicz makes a subjective evaluation of the degree to which the etude withstood the test of time and tries to decide to what extent the generational criterion may be useful in interpreting the etude. Commenting on Jan Komasa’s episode, entitled Warsaw (Warszawa), Ewa Ciszewska focuses on Poland’s social stratification during transformation and on its consequences for the young. Also analysed is the manner in which hip-hop culture is represented here. The third text discusses Maciej Migas’s episode The Sea (Morze). Jadwiga Mostowska focuses on the key plots, motifs and, first of all, on the central character to depart from generational tropes in favour of a reflection on the film itself – a work of art of the young director who wants to tell a story. The present study aimed to determine adrenopause or reduction of serum adrenal androgens with age at high altitude and at sea level. It was a cross-sectional study performed in 210 women resident at high altitude (4340 m) and 123 women living in Lima (150 m), aged 20-70 years. Fasting early morning blood samples were obtained. Serum dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA sulphate (DHEAS), androstenedione, testosterone and estradiol were measured by radioimmunoassay. Serum testosterone concentrations were greater in women living at high altitude than in those resident at sea level. Serum concentrations of DHEA, DHEAS and androstenedione were lower in women living at high altitude than in those living at sea level. The DHEAS/DHEA ratio was significantly greater, and the androstenedione/testosterone ratio was lower in samples from women living at high altitude. Among women older than 50 years of age, a greater decline in serum concentrations of DHEA was observed in those living at high altitude than in those living at sea level. Among women 60-70 years of age, serum concentrations of DHEA at high altitude were 46.9% of those in women of the same age living at sea level. Decay of DHEAS at sea level and at high altitude occurred from the age of 40 years. The decline was faster at high altitude than at sea level, and in women aged 60-70 years serum values of DHEAS at high altitude were 56% of those at sea level. In the same age group, serum concentrations of androstenedione among those native to high altitudes were 27.34% of the value at sea level. At sea level, serum testosterone concentrations did not change with age from 20 to 70 years. In women aged 20-39 years and 50-59 years, serum testosterone concentrations were greater at high altitude than at sea level (P<0.05). In those aged 60-70 years, the concentrations were similar in those living at sea level and at high altitude. At sea level and at high altitude, the serum testosterone/estradiol ratio increased with age (P<0.0034 and P<0.0001 respectively). This ratio increased at an earlier age among those living at high altitude (40-49 years) than among those living at sea level (50-59 years). Multivariate analysis showed that altitude (P<0.0001) and greater chronological age (P<0.001) were associated with lower serum DHEAS concentrations. DHEAS was related to chronological age (P<0.0001). Low serum androstenedione concentrations were related to living at high altitude at birth and greater chronological age (P<0.0001). In conclusion, adrenopause is attained earlier and is of greater magnitude at high altitude than at sea level.

AbstractOn 29 April 2015, four beacons were deployed onto an ice island in the Strait of Belle Isle to record positional data. The ice island later broke up into many fragments, four of which were tracked by the beacons. The relative influences of wind drag, current drag, Coriolis force, sea surface height gradient and sea-ice force on the drift of the tracked ice island fragments were analyzed. Using atmospheric and oceanic model outputs, the sea-ice force was calculated as the residual of the fragments' net forces and the sum of all other forces. This was compared against the force obtained through ice concentration-dependent relationships when sea ice was present. The sea-ice forces calculated from the residual approach and concentration-dependent relationships were significant only when sea ice was present at medium-high concentrations in the vicinity of the ice island fragments. The forces from ocean currents and sea surface tilt contributed the most to the drift of the ice island fragments. Wind, however, played a minimal role in the total force governing the drift of the four ice island fragments, and Coriolis force was significant when the fragments were drifting at higher speeds.

ABSTRACTTime series ice-draft data were obtained from moored ice-profiling sonar (IPS), in the coastal northeastern Chukchi Sea during 2009/10. Time series data show seasonal growth of sea-ice draft, occasionally interrupted by coastal polynya. The sea-ice draft distribution indicates a slightly lower abundance of thick, deformed ice compared with the eastern Beaufort Sea. In January, a rapid increase in the abundance of thick ice coincided with a period of minimal drift indicating compaction again the coast and dynamical thickening. The overall mean draft and corresponding derived thickness are 1.27 and 1.38 m, respectively. The evolution of modal ice thickness observed can be explained mostly by thermodynamic growth. The derived ice thicknesses are used to estimate heat losses based on ERA-interim data. Heat losses from the raw, 1 s IPS data are ~50 and 100% greater than those calculated using IPS data averaged over spatial scales of ~20 and 100 km, respectively. This finding demonstrates the importance of subgrid-scale ice-thickness distribution for heat-loss calculation. The heat-loss estimate based on thin ice data derived from AMSR-E data corresponds well with that from the 1 s observed ice-thickness data, validating heat-loss estimates from the AMSR-E thin ice-thickness algorithm.

ABSTRACTIncreasing ship traffic and human activity in the Arctic has led to a growing demand for accurate Arctic weather forecast. High-quality forecasts obtained by models are dependent on accurate initial states achieved by assimilation of observations. In this study, a multi-variate nudging (MVN) method for assimilation of sea-ice variables is introduced. The MVN assimilation method includes procedures for multivariate update of sea-ice volume and concentration, and for extrapolation of observational information spatially. The MVN assimilation scheme is compared with the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) using the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model. Two multi-variate experiments are conducted: in the first experiment, sea-ice thickness from the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission is assimilated, and in the second experiment, sea-ice concentration from the ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility is assimilated. The multivariate effects are cross-validated by comparing the model with non-assimilated observations. It is found that the simple and computationally cheap MVN method shows comparable skills to the more complicated and expensive EnKF method for multivariate update. In addition, we show that when few observations are available, the MVN method is a significant model improvement compared to the version based on one-dimensional sea-ice concentration assimilation.

ABSTRACT Serum levels of adrenal androgens were measured in children of both sexes living at sea level and at high altitude using a cross-sectional design. The levels were compared in relation to age at each altitude (150 m and 3400 m above sea level), and the first significant increase in mean levels compared with values at preceding ages was assessed and defined as adrenarche. A total of 118 boys and 95 girls aged 6–12 years living at low altitude and 95 boys and 104 girls aged 7–15 years living at high altitude, all of them attending public schools, were studied. Serum dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate and androstenedione were measured by radioimmunoassay and height and weight by standard anthropometric techniques. There were two significant increases in serum levels of adrenal androgens, the first observed in children between 6 and 8 years at sea level, and between 7 and 9 years at high altitude, and the second in children between 10 and 12 years at sea level and between 12 and 15 years at high altitude. Serum adrenal androgen levels increased earlier in children at sea level than at high altitude. It is concluded that adrenarche occurs later at high altitude than at sea level. ABSTRACTWe performed an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis to assess the intraseasonal variability of 5–60 day band-pass filtered Antarctic sea-ice concentration in austral winter using a 20-year daily dataset from 1995 to 2014. Zonal wave number 3 dominated in the Antarctic, especially so across the west Antarctic. Results showed the coexistence of stationary and propagating wave components. A spectral analysis of the first two principal components (PCs) showed a similar structure for periods up to 15 days but generally more power in PC1 at longer periods. Regression analysis upon atmospheric fields using the first two PCs of sea-ice concentration showed a coherent wave number 3 pattern. The spatial phase delay between the sea-ice and mean sea-level pressure patterns suggests that meridional flow and associated temperature advection are important for modulating the sea-ice field. EOF analyses carried out separately for El Niño, La Niña and neutral years, and for Southern Annular Mode positive, negative and neutral periods, suggest that the spatial patterns of wave number 3 shift between subsets. The results also indicate that El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Southern Annular Mode affect stationary wave interactions between sea-ice and atmospheric fields on intraseasonal timescales.

ABSTRACTThe permeability of sea ice can strongly affect the dissipation of wave energy into the ice pack. Sea-ice permeability is known to be impacted by the brine volume fraction and the blockage of flow pathways by the freezing of infiltrating lower salinity water. Here we investigate another process impacting sea-ice permeability, namely, inelastic deformation. We report the results of a first-of-its-kind field-scale deformation experiment to investigate the impact of compressive loading on sea-ice permeability. We observed that deformation decreased permeability by four orders of magnitude or more in some locations, while elsewhere permeability was unaffected or possibly increased. We show that the observed changes in permeability are consistent with expected changes in stress state and, as a result, in the mechanisms of deformation.
